Sorry, cheri, we're up in the small studio now and the record library is not accessible, so I won't be playing requests.

Do people know the 1982 Material track was one of Whitney H's first recordings as a lead singer?
Avatar 12:26am
Joe McG:

Now they do! Thanks, G.
  12:29am
G:

I often look up artists I don't know on playlists while the song's playing. Material started as a would-be progrock project and evolved into urban music in the early 80s. I was surprised to see Whitney H's name as lead singer on one of the tracks. Yep, sounded like here alright, duh!
  12:30am
Destroit:

Keep moving Joe. A gigantic hello to Holly. Touching down on Raleigh on feb 28th,

T-Zero:

Thanks for that info G. Was in another room and that Whitney was being played, so had to look at the playlist.

Blumin is a weirdo, love em.
  12:36am
Holly in NC:

Hey Destroit!!! Gigantic hello, we shall have to plan an amazing welcome. Right now it's horrid here, 25 degrees F and gusty as hell.

@Joe - I may be the only person in the world who doesn't like the Supremes, period. And it's totally Diana's fault.
  12:38am
T-Zero:

Heh, I'd take that temp, Holly, it's only 2 here.

i hate to trouble you joe,,but during your next mic break could you please give me a little shout out,,thank you joe..
Avatar 12:48am
Joe McG:

@Holly: Thanks for the correction! I always get that wrong. As for the Supremes, I don't hate Diana or anything, I just seem to play the post-DR albums more often.

Move it. Grinding, crunchy,

@T-Zero - every Ohio ex-pat I've ever met has been slightly insane. And we immediately become great friends ;-)

@Destroit - Lots up! After Joe's show, leave a comment at http://hollisterbanister.blogspot.com & I'll send you my e-mail so we don't clog Joe's board! Probably not 'til tomorrow, I'm already wildly multitasking

Old dog blue is great.

Irony here - part of my multitasking is baitng a havaheart trap to capture the critters (likely possums) who kept 2 people & 3 cats up ALL NIGHT with their antics in our ctawlspace. Somehow Joe is channeling my life, scary.

Joe, is it possible the previous owners of your dog were fans of this show? The german shepherd was called Hobo I think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=banXT6azA-4
  1:20am
Holly in NC:

@Possums, yes, and if you'd please curl up into tight heat saving fuzzy balls and go to friggin' sleep we won't have any problems. BTW, dinner is served - peanut butter, canteloupe, & sardines, go wild. And then to sleep.

SSS Records! Sorry I missed that one--love that country label, will def check out the Archive!

We're looking for a warmer spot, and ALL FREAKIN NIGHT we can't find a good one. Dommage. We'd take the spare bed.

Oops. I think the dog's name is London not Hobo.
It is possible your dog's previous family liked that show.
  1:22am

Yeaaaaa Joe!!!
(I thought when I first heard this title track, that Mike McKean used this as one of his influences for his Spinal Tap "David St. Hubbins" vocal! :)

  1:24am

Oh my gosh! Tears For Fears 'Mad World" totally bit this Cat Stevens song - did anyone else hear that?
Avatar 1:24am
Joe McG:

Hey, Matt! Never thought about the Cat Stevens-Spinal Tap connection. Further investigation!
  1:25am

If you're still doing songs about dogs, what about Nilsson's Me and My Arrow? Black Eyed Dog - Nick Drake, Shake Dog Shake - The Cure
  1:26am
Destroit:

I'm down with nick drake, jus' sayin
  1:26am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Listen to the Flower People, baby!!
Of course there's the Youngbloods, the Lemon Pipers and other psych-pop influences, but the stilted delivery of David reminds me of the early Cat Stevens.
  1:27am
david:

go Yusuf! gotta check out those early records.
  1:27am
Matt from Springfield:

@Destroit: And WHY would anyone not be down with Nick Drake??? ;)
Avatar 1:28am

@erella: Ooh, "Black Eyed Dog" can't just be played with dog songs. That song's too intense, makes my hair stand up!
Avatar 1:29am

@david: I really recommend "Matthew & Son" and "New Masters." The UK reissues from 2003 also have a whole bunch of nice bonus tracks. I'm also partial to the soundtrack to "Howard and Maude"!
  1:29am
Destroit:

Ya know Matt, some people just suck. :)
  1:30am
miss cheri:

joe i hope you have a wonderful valentines day,, and no shout outs either? night for real.
  1:30am

First saw Harold and Maude last year. Love the soundtrack, and the movie! I rec to any FMU fan!
@Destroit: Yeah, true, let's just ignore those people! :)
  1:31am
Holly in NC:

No spare beds at the inn, possums, sorry. Be grateful for your dinner!
Best peanut butter sandwich = seedless rye toast, pb, and sliced cornichons. No lie. Don't knock it 'til you try it!
  1:32am
Matt from Springfield:

@Destroit: "...cause while the sinners sin, the children play"
  1:32am
david:

Thanks Joe. From what I've heard of Matthew & Son it seems on par with the Bee Gee's "1st" album
  1:33am
Matt from Springfield:

Re: M. Dolor: He's Mr. DYINGLY Sad!!! :D
  1:36am
Matt from Springfield:

Oh Lawdy, novelty song integrating all aspects of "chicken hawk" into it!
@Holly: Sounds interesting--do you mean cornichons like cucumbers, or pickles?
Avatar 1:36am
Joe McG:

@Matt: ha ha! @david: Good comparison, both are in the vein.

Harold and Maude is a fabulous movie. One of my all time favourites.
  1:46am
Holly in NC:

@Matt - the wee pickled cucumbers found either in pricey French jars or somewhat less pricey in bulk in deli areas with a certain level of aspiration -down here readily available at Whole Foods, Harris Teeter & the better Krogers.
NOT sweet gherkins!!!
Or dills or 1/2 sours.
  1:47am
Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: NEVER sweet gherkins! I don't even know why they have those!! ;)
I'll look for those next time I'm at Whole Foods.
  1:48am
erella in toronto:

Hey now that Whitney Houston has died, would you play her first recorded bit on a Material album? It is a Hugh Hopper song with Archie Shepp playing sax. Robert Wyatt later recorded a version of the same song

@Holly: I'm pretty sure that a label in the UK recently released the last Cowsills LP "On My Side" on CD and I think it's a bonus track on there. Actually, I haven't checked, so maybe I'm totally wrong! But it may be worth trying.

It's strange but pleasant to listen to your show while fully awake (due to the hour, not the content).

Joe McG:

Hey, 12539, thanks for the info about the Slauson. East coast boy, only been to L.A. a couple of times. Apparently I need to dance the Slauson next time I'm there!
