Hi Joe!
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:11am Chop Scott:

Just repaired the Studio C monitor, and soon to carve up a roasted Chicken!
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 12:12am Joe McG:

Hey, Holly! Welcome! Hey, Chop Scott! Thanks for fixin' stuff 'n' stuff! Mmm, bruk bruk chicken!
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:14am miss cheri:

  Sun. 2/12/12 12:15am Destroit:

Hello Joe, and all listeners. Quiet night. Let's make noise.,,70's soul drip, as I'm typin, let's move.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 12:18am Joe McG:

Hey, cheri, hey, Destroit! Some noise tonight, some reflective, we'll see what happens....HOW you all doin'?
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:21am miss cheri:

joe could you play some barry white? i think that's sweet & romantic,,right?
Sun. 2/12/12 12:23am Holly in NC:

Archie Shepp sax
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 12:23am Joe McG:

Sorry, cheri, we're up in the small studio now and the record library is not accessible, so I won't be playing requests.
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:25am G:

Do people know the 1982 Material track was one of Whitney H's first recordings as a lead singer?
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 12:26am Joe McG:

Now they do! Thanks, G.
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:29am G:

I often look up artists I don't know on playlists while the song's playing. Material started as a would-be progrock project and evolved into urban music in the early 80s. I was surprised to see Whitney H's name as lead singer on one of the tracks. Yep, sounded like here alright, duh!
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:30am Destroit:

Keep moving Joe. A gigantic hello to Holly. Touching down on Raleigh on feb 28th,
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:31am T-Zero:

Thanks for that info G. Was in another room and that Whitney was being played, so had to look at the playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 2/12/12 12:32am D. Blumin:

Yup, I'm down here in the library - untangling all the chairs down here...
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:36am Destroit:

Blumin is a weirdo, love em.
Sun. 2/12/12 12:36am Holly in NC:

Hey Destroit!!! Gigantic hello, we shall have to plan an amazing welcome. Right now it's horrid here, 25 degrees F and gusty as hell.

@Joe - I may be the only person in the world who doesn't like the Supremes, period. And it's totally Diana's fault.
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:38am T-Zero:

Heh, I'd take that temp, Holly, it's only 2 here.
Sun. 2/12/12 12:38am Holly in NC:

Cissy's daughter, Dionne Warwick's cousin, Aretha's goddaughter. Royalty.
Sun. 2/12/12 12:39am Holly in NC:

@T-Zero - Where are you?
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:43am T-Zero:

Columbus OH.
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:44am Destroit:

Care less about the temperature, want to feel the people and the food. Holly, tell me what's up!
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:44am miss cheri:

i hate to trouble you joe,,but during your next mic break could you please give me a little shout out,,thank you joe..
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 12:48am Joe McG:

@Holly: Thanks for the correction! I always get that wrong. As for the Supremes, I don't hate Diana or anything, I just seem to play the post-DR albums more often.
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:50am Destroit:

Move it. Grinding, crunchy,
Sun. 2/12/12 12:55am Holly in NC:

@T-Zero - every Ohio ex-pat I've ever met has been slightly insane. And we immediately become great friends ;-)

@Destroit - Lots up! After Joe's show, leave a comment at http://hollisterbanister.blogspot.com & I'll send you my e-mail so we don't clog Joe's board! Probably not 'til tomorrow, I'm already wildly multitasking
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:57am miss cheri:

i'm loving your show so far joe,,i guess you don't do shout outs either,,
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:57am T-Zero:

@Holly. Not a native buckeye, but still crazy ;)
Sun. 2/12/12 12:57am Holly in NC:

This Conway song is awesome
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:00am Destroit:

Got ya Holly,
Sun. 2/12/12 1:03am Holly in NC:

I have never heard this Loraxy Roy Clark song before, I LOVE it!
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:05am Destroit:

Old dog blue is great.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:08am Holly in NC:

Irony here - part of my multitasking is baitng a havaheart trap to capture the critters (likely possums) who kept 2 people & 3 cats up ALL NIGHT with their antics in our ctawlspace. Somehow Joe is channeling my life, scary.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 1:09am Joe McG:

Yes, I've gone on a critter binge for some reason!
Sun. 2/12/12 1:12am Holly in NC:

Please tell me this song isn't going to make me cry
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:12am Possums:

It's freakin COLD OUT
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 1:13am Joe McG:

@Holly: Oops, I was going to pull some Red Sovine and totally forgot! Oh well...
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:13am miss cheri:

  Sun. 2/12/12 1:15am david:

hi Joe and all.
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:16am steve:

how bout some love for them kitties
Sun. 2/12/12 1:17am Matt from Springfield:

Good Joe, I wouldn't rename a dog that is already past the puppy stage.
@steve: If, and only if! *Marmalade* Kitty comes around! :)
Sun. 2/12/12 1:19am erella in toronto:

Joe, is it possible the previous owners of your dog were fans of this show? The german shepherd was called Hobo I think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=banXT6azA-4
Sun. 2/12/12 1:20am Holly in NC:

@Possums, yes, and if you'd please curl up into tight heat saving fuzzy balls and go to friggin' sleep we won't have any problems. BTW, dinner is served - peanut butter, canteloupe, & sardines, go wild. And then to sleep.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:20am Matt from Springfield:

SSS Records! Sorry I missed that one--love that country label, will def check out the Archive!
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:21am Possums:

We're looking for a warmer spot, and ALL FREAKIN NIGHT we can't find a good one. Dommage. We'd take the spare bed.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:22am erella in toronto:

Oops. I think the dog's name is London not Hobo.
It is possible your dog's previous family liked that show.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:22am Matt from Springfield:

Yeaaaaa Joe!!!
(I thought when I first heard this title track, that Mike McKean used this as one of his influences for his Spinal Tap "David St. Hubbins" vocal! :)
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:22am Destroit:

I'm invading your house on the 28th, sardines,PB,lemon, cilantro electric. :)
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 1:24am Joe McG:

@erella: I don't know, maybe! We loved the guy no matter what he was called.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:24am Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Such an assortment of foods reminds me of what my Dad told me he and his brothers used to eat: peanut butter, lettuce and mayo sandwiches! (At least he claims they used to eat those!)
Sun. 2/12/12 1:24am Holly in NC:

Oh my gosh! Tears For Fears 'Mad World" totally bit this Cat Stevens song - did anyone else hear that?
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 1:24am Joe McG:

Hey, Matt! Never thought about the Cat Stevens-Spinal Tap connection. Further investigation!
Sun. 2/12/12 1:25am erella in toronto:

If you're still doing songs about dogs, what about Nilsson's Me and My Arrow? Black Eyed Dog - Nick Drake, Shake Dog Shake - The Cure
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:26am Destroit:

I'm down with nick drake, jus' sayin
Sun. 2/12/12 1:26am Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Listen to the Flower People, baby!!
Of course there's the Youngbloods, the Lemon Pipers and other psych-pop influences, but the stilted delivery of David reminds me of the early Cat Stevens.
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:27am david:

go Yusuf! gotta check out those early records.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:27am Matt from Springfield:

@Destroit: And WHY would anyone not be down with Nick Drake??? ;)
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 1:28am Joe McG:

@erella: Ooh, "Black Eyed Dog" can't just be played with dog songs. That song's too intense, makes my hair stand up!
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 1:29am Joe McG:

@david: I really recommend "Matthew & Son" and "New Masters." The UK reissues from 2003 also have a whole bunch of nice bonus tracks. I'm also partial to the soundtrack to "Howard and Maude"!
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:29am Destroit:

Ya know Matt, some people just suck. :)
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:30am miss cheri:

joe i hope you have a wonderful valentines day,, and no shout outs either? night for real.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:30am Matt from Springfield:

First saw Harold and Maude last year. Love the soundtrack, and the movie! I rec to any FMU fan!
@Destroit: Yeah, true, let's just ignore those people! :)
Sun. 2/12/12 1:31am Holly in NC:

No spare beds at the inn, possums, sorry. Be grateful for your dinner!
Best peanut butter sandwich = seedless rye toast, pb, and sliced cornichons. No lie. Don't knock it 'til you try it!
Sun. 2/12/12 1:32am Matt from Springfield:

@Destroit: "...cause while the sinners sin, the children play"
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:32am david:

Thanks Joe. From what I've heard of Matthew & Son it seems on par with the Bee Gee's "1st" album
Sun. 2/12/12 1:33am Matt from Springfield:

Re: M. Dolor: He's Mr. DYINGLY Sad!!! :D
Sun. 2/12/12 1:36am Matt from Springfield:

Oh Lawdy, novelty song integrating all aspects of "chicken hawk" into it!
@Holly: Sounds interesting--do you mean cornichons like cucumbers, or pickles?
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 1:36am Joe McG:

@Matt: ha ha! @david: Good comparison, both are in the vein.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 1:39am Joe McG:

If anybody can tell me where "Slauson Shuffle" comes from, I'd be much obliged.
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:42am david:

Snuffleupagus should do his own version of "do the slauson shuffle"
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 1:46am Joe McG:

Snuffalslauson Snuffle.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:46am erella in toronto:

Harold and Maude is a fabulous movie. One of my all time favourites.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:46am Holly in NC:

@Matt - the wee pickled cucumbers found either in pricey French jars or somewhat less pricey in bulk in deli areas with a certain level of aspiration -down here readily available at Whole Foods, Harris Teeter & the better Krogers.
NOT sweet gherkins!!!
Or dills or 1/2 sours.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:47am Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: NEVER sweet gherkins! I don't even know why they have those!! ;)
I'll look for those next time I'm at Whole Foods.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:48am erella in toronto:

Hey now that Whitney Houston has died, would you play her first recorded bit on a Material album? It is a Hugh Hopper song with Archie Shepp playing sax. Robert Wyatt later recorded a version of the same song

Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 1:49am Joe McG:

@erella: Uh...I played it in the first set!
Sun. 2/12/12 1:49am Matt from Springfield:

YESSSS!! Non-famous Big Country!!! Thank you Joe!!
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:50am david:

lol. k&k reminded me of french fries and The Fonz. miss those days.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:50am Matt from Springfield:

Love Big Country, I wish there was more "80s Celtic" genre music out there--even 70s Celtic music, like the Horslips will do...
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 1:50am Joe McG:

Almost forgot about those bagpipe guitars, didn't you? :)
Sun. 2/12/12 1:51am Holly in NC:

Joe, I have been searching high & low for the Cowsills "Covered Wagon" since you played it 2 (?) weeks ago, and I've been totally thwarted. Never comped & noone's, er, sharing. >:-(
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:52am Destroit:

You have to find mclures pickles, and you will, 28th, quality food.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:52am Matt from Springfield:

I wasn't around at the time of Big Country, but they've always been a retro fav of mine! And yes, with only one song in my playlist they can sometimes be neglected!
  Sun. 2/12/12 1:52am david:

holy bagpipe guitars
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 1:53am Joe McG:

@Holly: I'm pretty sure that a label in the UK recently released the last Cowsills LP "On My Side" on CD and I think it's a bonus track on there. Actually, I haven't checked, so maybe I'm totally wrong! But it may be worth trying.
Sun. 2/12/12 1:56am Matt from Springfield:

"The Ladies' Man, Joe McGasko, is reminding you all about Valentine's Day. Do YOU have a Valentine Love for this Tuesday? Here's our smooooth friend Norman Connors (and a LADY) to remind you..."

Sun. 2/12/12 1:59am Matt from Springfield:

Nice cover of "My Funny Valentine" by Elvis Costello.
I just found out this is a Rodgers & Hart song.
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:00am T-Zero:

I love this song (Funny Valentine) but can never hear it without thinking of Nico and the Factions version.
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:03am david:

the delay on danny doyle's vocals was cool
Sun. 2/12/12 2:07am Holly in NC:

No more bagpipe guitars, bur how about bagpipe sax?

Very cool little instro
Sun. 2/12/12 2:08am Matt from Springfield:

But WHY do you move into the smaller Studio B during Marathons? Is it because that's where the 800 number line is located? (I thought someone mentioned that).
Sun. 2/12/12 2:10am erella in toronto:

Wow, I wasn't listening then! Great to see it. That will teach me to miss part of the show!
Sun. 2/12/12 2:11am Matt from Springfield:

Ah, physical location convenience. Thanks Joe!
And thanks volunteers! I DO like personally calling you during my fav shows, so get ready!! :)
Sun. 2/12/12 2:15am Holly in NC:

Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:15am Joe McG:

@Holly: I wish I had a Rufus Harley 45! @Matt: No problem explaining that stuff, I'm sure it seems like a mystery to a lot of listeners.
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:18am Taylor:

Ooh...tell me you brought some Devil's Anvil for this set.
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:18am rada:

This song is causing my pet snake to stir.
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:19am T-Zero:

@Joe McG: That song by Esmeray, did the Italian group Fun Fun also do it on the album Double Fun? I know I have it somewhere in Italian but can't remember on what album. (I can't play my vinyl to check as no turntable at present.)
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:21am T-Zero:

@Joe McG: I've been trying to figure out what the English version is...
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:21am Joe McG:

@Taylor: I wish I had! I know it just got reissued. Damn! @T-Zero: I don't know, but I want to find out. It does sound familiar to me.... @rada: !
Sun. 2/12/12 2:22am Matt from Springfield:

Turkish Delights! (Although we play classic Turkish rock so much on this station that's probably a cliche title!)
Sun. 2/12/12 2:23am Brian en Angleterre:

Bonjour Joe and everyone. Matthew & Son first album I bought with my own money from paper round in MONO. Still sounds good.
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:23am Kenzo:

Man, I missed Fields of Fire....haven't heard that song in decades. I think I have the music video recorded from TV on a VHS tape in a box...
Sun. 2/12/12 2:23am Matt from Springfield:

Joe, another thing: I didn't see the Premium Warehouse on this year's premiums page; are you still giving away a Warehouse item with a Mouse pledge?
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:23am Joe McG:

Hey, Brian! Love that story. My first album with my own money was the Tubes' second album. For a quarter!
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:24am Joe McG:

Hey, Kenzo! Want to field the Prize Warehouse question? :)
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:24am rada:

a most brilliant set thus far Joe. Kudos!
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:26am Kenzo:

Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:26am Joe McG:

Black Dog off Jesse Winchester's first is good & dark. 'Black dog don't believe in sin. Think of where the black dogs been'
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:27am Joe McG:

Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:27am Joe McG:

Thanks, Kenzo! Hey, Matt, check out Kenzo's helpful link!
Sun. 2/12/12 2:28am Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Kenzo, that answers it!
Sun. 2/12/12 2:32am Matt from Springfield:

I so LOVE the premiums offered every year, really gotta hand it to all the DJs...I have two "free" slots with my pledge after everything else I must have (including Muddy Water!), and there are TWELVE premiums competing for those two spaces! :)
Sun. 2/12/12 2:33am Matt from Springfield:

I enjoyed Bob Brainen's Psychedelic Psellouts 2, I want to get Vol 1 from the Warehouse.
Sun. 2/12/12 2:35am Brian en Angleterre:

Matt stop teasing yourself. This is the clear light of morning speaking!!
Sun. 2/12/12 2:38am Matt from Springfield:

Brian! It's finally snowing a bit here, with fierce winds! How's the clear light of morning look in Angleterre?
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:39am Joe McG:

@Matt: Thanks, Matt. I think you'll enjoy my premium this year!
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:40am king penguin:

Old Blue! I'll have to get to this one.
Sun. 2/12/12 2:41am Holly in NC:

@T-Zero - Italian, but not Fun Fun ! Delirium - song is Jesahel !!
Sun. 2/12/12 2:41am Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: I'm certain I will! (Especially certain if the "Jilted" song you've been playing is on it! I think it sounds awesome in any case!)

@ Holly: Jesahel! Thank you! I have it by Ciao Fellini on the '80 Mi Da'Tanto album and as Jezahel by Shirley Bassey. I KNEW I had it somewhere both in Italian and English but couldn't remember the English song title. I could kiss you. That's been bugging me for days since I heard this played earlier on FMU (forget now what show).

Matt. Bluddy cold, hitting minus 16 in some parts which is good going for us.
Joe After buying Harry Smith's anthology I found the original Good Dog Blue having listening to The Byrds for years. It was an eyeopener.

The possum growled, Blue whined at him.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:47am Joe McG:

I'm so happy for you, T-Zero! It's so crazy-making to be unable to remember a tune.
Sun. 2/12/12 2:47am some other guy:

ahhhh I don't really like that townshend song or this boris song, but that's some good dj'n right there.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:48am Joe McG:

Thanks, sog. I hit it once in a while!
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:49am T-Zero:

@Joe McG: I'm just glad I recently cataloged my music collection so once I knew the title I could search for what albums. lol Thank god for FMU listeners!
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:49am king penguin:

The "Clarence White Byrds" did three dog songs. Blue, Fido, Bugler. Gene Parsons (not Gram) would later do Bugler as a tribute to Clarence.
Sun. 2/12/12 2:50am Matt from Springfield:

@TZ: That's right, you were the listener doing the massive music databasing project!
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:51am Joe McG:

@king penguin: I love Bugler. What album is the Fido song on?
Sun. 2/12/12 2:51am Brian en Angleterre:

Ahh Clarence. Bugler bugler bless your mind jesus gonna take for a chariot ride (from memeory)

Ballad of Easy Rider.
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:52am T-Zero:

@Matt: Yeah, now I'm trying to finish up my book library I started years ago and never finished.
Sun. 2/12/12 2:53am Brian en Angleterre:

Neil Jung's King on Harvest Moon is poor in comparison
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:54am Joe McG:

I sense a complete dog show in the future!

  Sun. 2/12/12 2:56am T-Zero:

@Holly: Seriously! You have no idea how much I appreciated that info. :)
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:56am king penguin:

That''s ruff!
Sun. 2/12/12 2:56am Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 2:56am Joe McG:

Goodnight, everybody! Thanks for listening, and have a great week! And VD, if you're into that sort of thing!
Sun. 2/12/12 2:57am Brian en Angleterre:

kp Might have to go play them today.
Where are they Lassie in that mine shaft?
Sun. 2/12/12 2:58am Matt from Springfield:

Goodbye Joe! :) And goodnight, everybody!
I vote in favor of a dog-theme show, or at least block!
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:58am T-Zero:

Thanks, JoeMcG. Wonderful evening of music! Have a great week.
Sun. 2/12/12 2:58am Holly in NC:

Joe - Thank you for a particulatly great show!

@T-Zero - I just found a whole bunch of Jesahel versions, will update next week. BYW, my book database is still on big floppy floppies somewhere...unfinished..
  Sun. 2/12/12 2:58am king penguin:

Fido is o Ballad of Easy Rider. It's only Byrds song John York sang lead on.
Avatar Sun. 2/12/12 3:00am Kenzo:

My 80's floppy disk video game library database is on paper.
  Sun. 2/12/12 3:01am T-Zero:

@Matt & Holly: Most of my book library was stolen when it was in storage during a move... so that project is now much simpler.
  Sun. 2/12/12 12:07pm Marmalade Kitty:

Enjoyed the show, Joe! Thanks. listening later..

If you're still puzzled about the Slauson Shuffle, it's named after a street in LA. Source: http://tinyurl.com/6orwo92

Original Do the Slauson record:

It's strange but pleasant to listen to your show while fully awake (due to the hour, not the content).
  Mon. 2/13/12 10:16am Joe McG:

Hey, 12539, thanks for the info about the Slauson. East coast boy, only been to L.A. a couple of times. Apparently I need to dance the Slauson next time I'm there!
