Since forming in the mid 90s, Niger's Mali Yaro and Goumbé Star have been singing about serious political and social issues: For example, the band's 2008 cd made an impassioned call for peace in the troubled north of the country. But this electric West African powerhouse also knows how to let loose, delighting crowds on its first US tour with potent polyrhythmic dancefloor workouts.

Mali Yaro and Goumbé Star will rock the Shrine 2271 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd (just above 133 St) in Harlem Friday March 16 at midnight.

Big thanks to our illustrious engineer Juan Aboites!

Thanks and re: Andrés Cantor - yes!
  6:10pm G:

Sounded like Cantor, but I figured he might have imitators, so I asked!
  6:12pm b:

I would like to dedicate the next tune to Mike the Headless Chicken. Google it.
  6:15pm M:

diggin' the chinese tunes. Do you know the band glorious pharmacy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Your DJ:

Glorious Pharmacy... nope, can't say that I do...
  6:30pm M:

glorious pharmacy (美好药店) is a singer called xiao he, who does crazy experimental stuff and is beijing opera trained + ye haizi, who were a pretty big 90s folk act. Their album footsteps rumble (脚步声阵阵) is incredible, my favorite china record of all time. anything by xiao he (小河) is great though

And thank you for the great DJ work. Keep playing kora music. I thing the kora is the happiest string instrument. It always makes me happy.
  8:19pm ratbone:

  8:38pm G:

For a minute, I thought the Ruta lyrics were "PLEDGE, PLEDGE, PLEDGE!!!" Clear case of marathon hangover.
  9:01pm Bas, NL:
