Getting back to "prog rock" bands, my recollection is that all of the better known 70s prog rock bands were British (Yes, ELP, Strawbs, Genesis, King Crimson, etc). I can't recall a single well-known American prog rock band (but then again it is not exactly my favorite genre).

There was the Canadian band Rush, and there werre some US prog imitators -- Clay Pigeon is a big Starcastle fan, the best known prog-imitating US band in the mid 70s.

Regarding American Prog: I was talking to one of my younger metalhead friends the other day, and he was raving about how he'd just discovered Kansas, of all things. And ya know, some of the EARLY Kansas wasn't half-bad American prog, in a way. They were a guilty pleasure for me even back then, but something of a pleasure nonetheless.

Spike, Kansas definitely had their moments before they got arena disease. As for American prog rock bands, I'd argue that some of Santana's early records would certainly fit, in its own multiracial/multiethnic way.

I was gonna mention Kansas, but many may think them too poppy for true prog.

Ironically, newer prog revival ,usic in the last 20 years has many major American exponents near the top of the lists of people who care about these things. Spock's Beard is an LA band.

Why so defensive?! Prog is one of the more durable genres of rock, like power pop, and FMU has multiple power pop shows. Prog is not just for guys in trench coats tapping their foot in 13/8 time. There's also 7/8, 3/4, and 9/8.
