Shanren - the "Mountain Men" - blend the traditions of mountainous southwest China with rock, reggae and ska. The four-piece combines guitar, bass and drums with traditional folk instruments of southwest China's ethnic minorities.

Now on a very grassroots debut North American tour (click here to help support the tour via a rocket hub fundraising campaign) Shanren makes its NJ club debut Tuesday March 20 at the Saint in Asbury Park.

But you can hear Shanren's first ever Garden State appearance right here on FMU.

Big thanks to our illustrious engineer Juan Aboites and assistant Zeke Mishanec!

Listener comments!

  6:12pm Steve-O:

Hey Rob! Hope you're having a nice St. Patrick's Day, my good man. BTW, Got any info on Los Hippy-Loyas? Where they're from, what year the album or single was released, etc.? Just curious. =)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Rob W:

Thanks Steve. I totally missed the memo about doing a show on St Patrick's Day - my band is from China! As for the Hippy-Loyas, they're from Spain from the 60s - Chicas is a compilation of Spanish female artists bubblegum / pop from that era.
  6:17pm seang:

so messed up!
  6:17pm Sue:

Hi, Rob! Happy Chinese St. Patty's Day! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Rob W:

And happy Chinese St. Patty's Day to everyone, thanks Sue!
  6:20pm Detroit Mac:

I don't remember the Stoogies doing it like this in the Grande Ballroom. Great collection of South American 1970 Prog Rock at Dangerous Minds: http://www.dangerousminds.net/index.php
  6:29pm Jia:

Happy St. Patty Day Rob! first time listening and looking forward to Shanren playing!
  6:31pm Ken From Hyde Park:

For my father-in-law's 70th birthday today, we went to a Chinese buffet for lunch. All that was missing was the Shanren.
  6:34pm Gourmand:

Nothing says festive quite like an all-you-can-eat buffet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Rob W:

Ken, perfect, thanks! And thanks for tuning in Jia! Shanren is coming up in at the top of the hour, stay tuned!
  6:57pm Jia:

Very danceable Latin music from South America and Caribbean. btw Rob, your program helps math. When I post a comment, I get an addition to do.
  7:05pm Ike:

Rocking!
  7:07pm Jia:

This is very rock sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Rob W:

The cd track had a harder rock sound than most of the songs they will do live - but I think you'll like what you're about to hear.
  7:15pm Jia:

Ok. I am listening to the interview. Great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Rob W:

Thanks Jia! And I'm glad we can help you practice with your math. Although I'm lucky - here at the station when I post a comment, I don't have to do the math equation!
  7:18pm Jia:

What's this song name?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Rob W:

I didn't do a great job of transcribing the title - Lasomi possibly? I may update this page later with more precise titles of a few of the songs - I will need to contact the band first though. Or you can email me via the email link on this page and I can check for you.
  7:31pm Jia:

Cheers to Rob and Shanren, Ganbei!!
  7:47pm Jia:

Thank you Rob and Shanren! I am a fan of your program now.
  7:50pm Jia:

Is this one a Chinese too? I like it too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Rob W:

Gong Myoung is part of the Korean new-folk scene...
  8:00pm katie:

those strings were on fire. I wish you had a video.
  8:01pm cubicle carl:

Did that station ID just have the term "full bosomed" in it?
  8:03pm Jia:

Can't remember them all. Is there a list of songs played on the show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Rob W:

You heard correctly Cubicle Carl!
  8:03pm cubicle carl:

Well, Rob, it seems like you re-grouped nicely with the Irish music.
  8:05pm cubicle carl:

I think I had an aunt that was full bosomed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Rob W:

  8:24pm Destroit:
