Erlend Viken, award-winning violinist and virtuoso on Norway's national instrument, the hardanger fiddle, stops by for a live solo session and interview. The hardanger is like a standard violin but in addition to the usual four strings there are four or five "sympathetic" strings that vibrate to give the instrument a haunting echo-like sound. Erlend plays in various bands including the fiddle duo Aslak & Erlend and the bluegrass outfit Early Bird String Band, two-time nominees for the Spellemann award - Norway's equivalent to the Grammy.

Oh, this is beautiful. Just tuned in and heard a Hardanger! Memories of going to Norwegian camp "Skogfjorden" in Northern Minnesota as a kid... That is the coolest stringed instrument ever. And such beautiful melodies...
