Listener comments!

  3:10pm
Irwin:

Huh? Wha???
  3:10pm
Ted Nugent:

What the HELL is this shit?
  3:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ahh, Yolande Bavan! I was wondering yesterday who the vocal was for that version of "Cat Scratch Fever".
  3:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Dark Night of the Soul-Searching without a Flashlight and Stubbing Toes, with Irwin. Wed 3-6 pm.
  3:15pm
kat330:

Don't believe I know this piece from the Hummel catalog. [pic, not tune]
  3:16pm
kat330:

Hi guys!
  3:16pm
Mike East:

funny - I just learned what hummel was on Thunk Tank last night.
  3:17pm
kat330:

Call it the synch and shuffle gods, Mike. :)
  3:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Bob Dylan's 115th Dream", chill Japanese[?] style.
  3:18pm
Parq:

kat: I think it's a Lladro.
  3:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

That Click Mort gallery has some pretty good "hybrid" creations.
  3:19pm
kat330:

@Parq: Uh-oh, I was stretching my limits of figurine knowledge w/ the Hummel (ex's mother collected the things). What is Lladro?
  3:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Lladro--Spanish porcelain figures maybe?
  3:22pm
paula pc:

I'm with kat because Lladros usually get the shiny glaze, and this is matte
  3:22pm
kat330:

Found a gallery online. Suppose you're right. I myself am an anti-collector. Hard to buy a gift for, but it makes moving a whole lot easier.
  3:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

http://lladro.stores.yahoo.net/

Very well made Spanish figures.
  3:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: So a gift for an anti-collector would be to go into one of their rooms and throw some stuff out?
  3:25pm
Michael:

LLadro's are both shiny and matte. Mother in law has quite a collection and that's the only reason I know. Really.
  3:26pm
kat330:

@Matt: Exactly! :) Unfortunately, I live w/ a book/DVD/CD hoarder, so it would still be a "losing" battle.
  3:27pm
paula pc:

@ Michael -- that is right...I think Hummels are never shiny, but Lladro goes both ways -- I say usually shiny b/c that's the favorite in the dept store...lucky you to behold a collection
  3:27pm
kat330:

Although, instead of throw out, rather repurpose, pass it forward, recycle and the like.
  3:30pm
kat330:

I've just never developed an attachment for things. And I do think a partial source of that is having had to move so much as a child and even still.
  3:31pm
Michael:

Yes, oh so lucky...

But as you know, some people absolutely love them some Lladro.
  3:33pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@kat330 same here. I've always been happy just buying records, and just buying records to listen to.
  3:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: I'm like your book/CD/DVD hoarder hubby--I don't hoard things like other people, but I do hoard Information. I can understand that.

Computers are great for minimizing storage of things--but it's the information I'm after, so it's still there! Plus if you like LPs like I do, that's a whole 'nother problem for storage!
  3:34pm
kat330:

Irwin as Edith Ann!
  3:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

We like Gordon better, take your time coming back from the bathroom, Irwin.
  3:37pm
Van in DC:

Duck...duck!
  3:37pm
kat330:

@Matt & Andrew: I have kept my vinyl collection w/me through the years -- well, much of it. Some of it was purloined when I stored it at a different ex's basement, and then I lost some of it in a divorce with same-said ex. And I'm making inroads with J.T. -- at least he's willing to take in items to a Book & Music Exchange store locally, so we can have a rotation of new stuff. :)
  3:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

So Irwin, has the truth set you free?

They still have A&Ps up there? I presume you were buying the world's smallest truffle salt.
  3:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Book and music exchanges are great, I like rotating stuff myself that way.
@Van: Chicken...chicken! :)
  3:42pm
kat330:

Van, are you worried about bird splatter?
  3:43pm
Mike East:

@Van and Matt - FOWL!
  3:44pm
Van in DC:

kat330, nah! Irwin's a nice enough guy.
  3:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

I was thinking this was "The Future Is Now" Neil singing!

Hey Van! Mike!
  3:47pm
Van in DC:

Hey there Matt, Irwin, and all ya'll great folks! Just stopping in briefly before disappearing from work. Been too busy today!
  3:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

Jim Price is a FMU DJ who goes waaaaayback with the station, though I never heard of him till he returned to the schedule recently. Then I noticed this on a playlist from a few years ago:

http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/28168
Ancient history that will bring a smile! :)
  3:47pm
seang:

fuck yeah
  3:47pm
Caryn:

@Matt: oh man, same here. Books, music and movies/tv. That's my hoarding. All about the information.
  3:48pm
seang:

I'll fuck anything that moves
  3:49pm
kat330:

@Matt: So what is the deal with the Price-less minute? I thought there would have been a "reveal" by now.
  3:50pm
Homer Collyer:

I think collecting is swell!
  3:51pm
kat330:

@Caryn: Yes, I could have figured that from prior posts. Is it a common Finnish thing to do so much lit/music/movie collecting?
  3:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: One way of both enhancing your information hoarding, while minimizing the space required, is to type up your little scrawls as a text file on a computer. I have a "scrawls.doc" that's over 10 years old--my mom told me to clean up little scrawls I jotted down while at the computer, so I typed them up to throw away the papers. Now, I can copy and paste anything I like into it!
  3:51pm
Caryn:

I was kicking myself when Irwin was absent last week, because the latest "little girl singing pop" hype had started on youtube, and I wondered whether he thought it was crap or something he liked.
  3:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: I think Jim Price was threatening to sue Ken over something at the station from the past, so in lieu of a cash settlement Ken agreed to give Jim a "show" instead...
  3:52pm
glenn:

i don't know about finland, but i'm willing to bet that anyplace that has insane freezing winters has a lot more book / movie / music hoarding people.
  3:53pm
seang:

sorry for my language, I had to let off some steam
  3:53pm
Caryn:

@kat: I dunno. It definitely runs in our family. My dad and brother are the same way. We joke that some ancestor must have gotten it on with a pack rat to breed a bunch of hoarding descendents.
  3:53pm
moving things:

@seang: Well don't let it off on US!
  3:54pm
kat330:

@glenn: Ah, I was JUST going to type that J.T. once told me because "there's nothing else to do"!
  3:56pm
Caryn:

@Matt: heh :) I have a bunch of little scraps of paper with notes on them, but nowadays, I have taken to writing notes down in a "bits and bobs" file on my laptop or in the "memo" section of my cellphone.
@glenn: true enough. When it's -36 outside, having stuff to pass the time with inside does come in very handy.
  3:56pm
kat330:

Uh-huh, well, I don't see how his current "show" is much of an appeasement. It sounds like he was tricked by the wording -- Ken's a genie in the bottle.
  3:57pm
Snortley:

Mr. Mort’s formal training consists of a single high school ceramics class, where the tendency of his pieces to explode when fired eventually led to him being banned from the kiln. He has since opted to work only with pre-fired materials.
His recapitated figures have been shown at La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles and Webb Gallery in Waxahachie, Texas.
"I see my work as no more than reconfiguring two useless pieces of cultural debris into one piece of useless cultural debris. All the same, I suppose even debris isn't totally charmless."
  3:58pm
?:

The banter between Irwin and Jim Price was, um, priceless, back when their shows abutted.
  3:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

LOVE the tropical bed music! Glad to hear it back again!
  3:59pm
chris:

Gotta love that cough button.
  4:00pm
kat330:

@Snortley: Mr. Mort's a repurposer after my heart.
  4:00pm
Michael:

And Jim and Vanilla Bean too. Great stuff.
  4:04pm
kat330:

Found this on the Rory page: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUBsB2T2SSM
  4:06pm
Dan from Toronto:

Love the music, Irwin, but how does that duck feel about the whole situation? Has anyone bothered to ask it?
  4:10pm
on my bill:

Ask a different kind of duck and it could be a question and merganser session.
  4:10pm
Carmichael:

OK, made it back. Was BBQ'ing for my entire department on a Cadillac of a grill. I smell like Andouille and beef. Hi Irwin!
  4:12pm
kat330:

@Carm: A Weber kettle?
  4:12pm
glenn:

andouille one, andouille two.
  4:13pm
Droll:

I love I Love You, but hate when the name makes it so hard to find the band online. What label?
  4:14pm
Jonny Dex:

Great track by I Love You - Paul & Edi from ILY are playing this Saturday in a new incarnation (as yet unnamed - performing under the name "honey" for this show, but that will change) at the Rubulad party this Saturday 3/31 in Bushwick!
  4:15pm
Carmichael:

@kat330: whoa no. This is what we have: http://tinyurl.com/bmx2eyo
  4:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Mmm, playlist smells tastier already!
  4:17pm
Jonny Dex:

@Droll: look up "I Love You Airlines" - you should get more results that way
  4:17pm
glenn:

holy cow carm, has nasa seen that thing?
  4:19pm
kat330:

Ohhhh, gas. My kettle is over 25 yrs. old now and still grilling great. I've never actually cooked on a gas grill, but that one could certainly service a big crew.
  4:19pm
chris:

You in Oaktown, Carmichael? I just ate, but can come right over... ;-) That *is* a caddy! Nice!
  4:22pm
kat330:

What was the occasion the department was celebrating?
  4:26pm
Carmichael:

@chris: I'm right up the road in Sacramento. Start rollin' ...
@kat330: we just have a bbq thing about once a quarter or so, whenever the mood strikes us. We buy all the meat for staff, and they bring potluck to round it out.
@Glenn: Yeah, we got that bad boy for free out of County surplus. It'll grill 50 burgers at a time!
  4:27pm
US State Dept.:

Anyone who exports that grill or its parts to North Korea or Iran is subject to severe penalties, even if those countries claim it's for peaceful chillin' and grillin'.
  4:29pm
kat330:

Sacramento, eh? Speaking of andouille, or rather Vienna sausage, no more Ahnold as a bee in the Bee's bonnet. :)
  4:33pm
kat330:

@Irwin: It's something Rory did with visuals, not music. Kisses.
  4:33pm
North Korea:

We wanna nuke us some burgerz, NOW.
  4:36pm
Carmichael:

Kat, that's a chapter that most people are trying to forget. Funny how everyone thought he would be the answer to the State's woes; now, no one will ever admit having voted for him.
  4:36pm
Kim Jong Un:

Kiss the dear cook.
  4:37pm
Laura L:

Aw, shucks. Thanks, Irwin. See you tonight. More info: www.blastbooks.com.
  4:37pm
kat330:

Ironically, when I last lived in California, it was the same guv you've got again. Recycle, repurpose, rerun, re.....
  4:40pm
Carmichael:

I can smell that brisket, Irwin. Wait, that's me. Never mind ...
  4:42pm
Governor Moonbeam:

@kat: Retread.
  4:45pm
Carmichael:

Boy, this is a great song. Richard Thompson vibe. I'll have to look into this feller.
  4:47pm
kat330:

Retraction: Deukmejian was the last for me.
  4:48pm
Carmichael:

Yikes, Kat. No wonder you moved! Did you grow up out here?
  4:50pm
kat330:

No, Carm. I was in L.A. from late '77 to Feb. '89. Leaving wasn't by my wont. (esp. not to Chicago in the middle of winter)
  4:50pm
kat330:

Seamless mix!
  4:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

Lighter aloft for Soundhog! (lighter)
  4:52pm
::JT::

Love this mashup! Too bad I missed Lennie Tristano and Peter Ivers Band earlier... So was that Teenage Kicks cover any good?
  4:52pm
kat330:

High on the Soundhog! Reminds me, whatever happened to one-hit-wonder Spacehog?
  4:53pm
Yosef:

In the meantime
  4:54pm
paula pc:

this is extremely sexy
  4:55pm
kat330:

Agree, Paula. Well done indeed.
  4:55pm
::JT::

No blisters on his fingers!
  4:56pm
kat330:

Yosef, in the meanWHILE, yes?
  4:56pm
alt history:

That would have caused Charles Manson to send his followers out for schoolin', and he wouldn't be foolin'.
  4:56pm
paula pc:

@kat -- this, on the other hand...there went the mojo!
  4:56pm
Yosef:

Spacehog? I don't believe so. I actually really like that album, more than just one hit ;)
  4:57pm
Carmichael:

Well played, Soundhog! Kudos to you.
  4:57pm
Governor Moonbeam:

Charles DID in fact give them every inch of his love.
  4:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

Is Anton an international star or something?
  4:57pm
Carmichael:

Meanwhile, back in the jungle ...
  4:57pm
kat330:

Yikes, TIME, you're right. Getting old isn't the party it's made out to be, young ones here....
  4:58pm
paula pc:

i just sorta spoke ill of the dead, i'm sorry
  4:58pm
Marmalade Kitty:

bad choice
  4:59pm
Marmalade Kitty:

bad bad
  4:59pm
Carmichael:

Now some Amanda vs. George Harrison would hit the spot.
  4:59pm
Yosef:

Anton is tearing it up in parent's basement
  4:59pm
Cheri Pi:

Anton was a troubled soul.
  4:59pm
BT:

http://www.destinyland.org/anton-maiden-tribute.htm
  5:00pm
Cheri Pi:

Oh-BT, leave it to us to feel sympathy for AM.
  5:01pm
paula pc:

@ BT, Cheri -- yep
  5:01pm
Yosef:

I liked Anton's song more than this one.
  5:03pm
Bluffer:

So why don't you PLAY it 27 times in row, right now!!!
  5:05pm
Mike East:

If we're talking Spacehog - I always go with the Chinese Album. That one's great- start to finish.
  5:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

RIP, Anton Gustavsson. Passed away much too soon, much like Chris "Wizz-O" Palestis.
But like Wizz-O, you live on in our hearts, us listeners of deranged radio.
  5:05pm
Yosef:

I'll have to check that out. I'm only familiar with Resident Alien, one of my fav albums.
  5:06pm
kat330:

@Mike: Are they still recording? I really found "In the MeanTIME" an earworm, and loved whenever Shaffer played it on DL (which he hasn't recently I've noticed.)
  5:07pm
Matt from Springfield:

IRWIN bla bla bla bla bla bla IRWIN yada yada yada yada yada yada yada yada IRWIN hey hey hey hey hey IRVVIN (ha ha, got ya!)
  5:07pm
::JT::

So is this with Quine still?
  5:07pm
kat330:

IRWIN (you see that?) Thanks for the Sweet!!
  5:08pm
Mike East:

I don't think so. I actually jammed with the guitarist a few years back. One of them is married to Steven Tyler's daughter, so I think he's tied to the old ball 'n chain.
  5:09pm
ted:

Richard Lloyd isn't it??
  5:09pm
Mike East:

@Yosef - if you like Resident Alien, I think you'll really dig the second album.
  5:10pm
me:

I love you Irwin!
  5:11pm
Yosef:

Thanks Mike, I'll def. check it out. I remember when the 2nd album came out, I vaguely remember them having a hit from it.
  5:11pm
::JT::

@ted -- both were on Girlfriend, and Quine fell out after one of the later recordings mixed him too low. Repeat of what happened with Reed after Blue Mask.
  5:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

Inadvertent Amanda quote: because "me loves you, Irwin!"
  5:12pm
me:

This is pretty sweet!
  5:13pm
iii:

sounds like well arranged radio to me
  5:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

Love the lyrics in "Airplane Blues" myself!
  5:13pm
me:

amanda?
  5:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

Herbie! I thought for sure this was another Lee Morgan--listen to that style.
  5:16pm
mill creek:

Dare I say it ...FUNKEE FUNKEE !
  5:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

@me: Amanda (Whitt), star of Irwin's show. In "character" she said "Me loves you Irwin!" on the comments. So....if you say "I love you Irwin!", then logically, me loves you, Irwin! Get it? :)
  5:17pm
Carmichael:

Herbie's got a thing with melons, yeah?
  5:18pm
kat330:

Cantaloupe is misspelled.
  5:20pm
Irwin:

fixt, thx
  5:22pm
kat330:

Conservation of letters, I., approve. :)
  5:24pm
kat330:

Say, here's a trivia question: Why do so many bands have "Buffalo" in their name? Just wondering if it has some meaning I don't know.
  5:25pm
Lizardner Dave:

Because it's just as tasty and better for you than beef.
  5:25pm
mill creek:

try telling a buffalo yu're not putting his name in
  5:26pm
kat330:

@LD: Where's the beef in band names though?
  5:26pm
Scott S.:

Buffalo Springfield got their name from a cargo truck that traveled between those two cities. But which Springfield it meant is anyone's guess
  5:26pm
Carmichael:

As to Buffalo Springfield, it was the name of a steamroller that was sitting in front of their communal SF home. Don't know about the others.
  5:27pm
Carmichael:

Oh no, clash of the trivia!! What do we do???
  5:27pm
seang:

cool tune
  5:29pm
kat330:

Donna the Buffalo, Grant Lee Buffalo, um,
  5:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

You're not explaining--you're just shilling for Wikipedia!!!

(How much do they pay? Any way I can become one, I'd love to...)
  5:29pm
Alia:

Other band name examples: Jesus & Mary Buffalo, Led Buffalo, Iron Buffalo, Snoop Doggy Buffalo...
  5:29pm
trolly mctrollerson:

just noticed the soundtap thing hadn't been mentioned, and just noticed wfmu 'withdrew', that an the station it was competing against being the only stations that withdrew... sup wit dat?

fmu knew there were gonnna get smassssshhhhhed, gonna get creeeaaaaaaammmmmed, couldn't take the spotlighttttttttt

(just trollin)
  5:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ernie K-Doe rocks! I should check that out!
  5:32pm
kat330:

"when panthers roamed in Arkansas and buffalo made their home in Tennessee" -- some N-ville connection....
  5:33pm
::JT::

Buffalo Daughter & Buffalo Tom
  5:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Alma Cogan also rocks! Thanks for bringing her to my attention Irwin!
A lot of nerds would probably like these songs, I should refer my fellow nerds to these songs.
  5:35pm
::JT::

Dad had Alma Cogan lps, never listened to them.... now I realize I should have. AT least did listen to his Hank Marvin & The Shadows and CCR records.
  5:35pm
Carmichael:

I got my trivia from a book about SF rock by Richie Unterberger. Have never bothered to "verify" it. Just took it for granted.
  5:37pm
Carmichael:

Matt, Ernie K-Doe was a New Orleans singer, a contemporary of Fats Domino, Alan Toussaint, Frankie Ford, etc ... His one big hit was "Mother in Law".
  5:40pm
Cindy Who:

Clear Light sounds very Whoish.
  5:40pm
::JT::

Speaking of Unterberger: I know I contributed a few crummy mistakes to the All Music Guide. Called Robert Quine, my favorite guitar player of all time, Richard Quine..... I still cringe. Nobody checked it, either.
  5:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: "A Certain Girl" was also an enduring, if not charting hit. I love that one, it's been covered a lot, though the vocal stylings and arrangements on the original are superb.

That's right, the New Orleans R&B scene, that produced SO MUCH great music in the early days of rock 'n roll.

Oncologist:

Has anyone considered possible aetiologies for IRWIN's recent spate of absences and tardy arrivals? (caps help him spot his name while skimming, despite ocular degeneration)

Yes, remote diagnosis is dicey, but here's a proposal. Could the cause be an adverse reaction to the chemo he is likely undergoing to battle the galloping stage four Amandanoma Terribilis he contracted as a result of his notoriously throat-abusing H&M performance?

KRVS in Lafayette, LA brought me up to speed on the "early New Orleans" music, I'm glad I learned! They have a lot of original, eclectic music programming with a Louisiana feel.
