Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from April 10, 2012 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

this is some revolutionary stuff to be playin' in my white-collar office. Hi peeeeeeps.

Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: I've liked it ever since Brian starting playing the reissue.
Screed-y stuff turns me off, but at least when they put a great beat and rhythm to it, it becomes listenable and you can take note of their valid points better than if it was a written manifesto.
  3:08pm
Cheri Pi:

This lady has PMS like me. nothing wrong with it either.
  3:10pm
r howard:

I suspect this is 20 mins in length
  3:10pm

Wow, like "Wendy Williams punk meets PMS"!

She wants to throw her stapler at the guy in the next cube.

r howard:

anyone know who're the representative's pals for this session?
  3:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

OH WOW, NOH MERCY! That's even more unusual than their "usual"! Electronic shrieks instead of percussion!!
  3:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

Not to mention Shirley & Dolly Collins--Joe McG's played them before, truly amazing singers from the 60s.
  3:14pm
Rob:

Not sure who's playing, but is that Rachael Wadham with the zither?
  3:16pm
hubba:

Geeze BT, trying to make everyone look bad!? Show is off to a killer start!
  3:17pm
hubba:

huh, huh... I said geeze
  3:18pm
Danne D:

Jandek on WFMU is roughly equivalent to Elvis emerging from that gas station he's been secretly working at since faking his death in '77 and doing a comeback special. Very excited for a great moment in the station's history :)

Hey to BT and everyone else :)
  3:18pm
Danne D:

And now a cover of Heroin - this is a killer start!
  3:19pm

@Danne: Or else, the Jandek 30th Annivesary Special! Back to where "he all began"!
Welcome!

3lp set!! totally worth it... there is a disparity between being a music lover and working for a living... i'll be damned if i eat off that Germs picture dics, but i sold my grandma's plates to buy it...

is jandek on later?
  3:26pm
mike noble in nyc:

would you believe, i originally tried to book jandek for a SSD/UCB show?
  3:27pm
Danne D:

Hmm, given that it's Moe Tucker does that make it a 1/2 cover? Brings me back to perhaps the only cool moment in the history of MTV. I think it was like the 20th anniversary of the albums release or some such but it was the first time the Velvets had been all together in like forever and they showed the whole 10 minutes of them playing Heroin live with a news-break. Truly amazing.
  3:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

@mike noble: That would be an appropriate UCB guest--but alas, Jandek doesn't like a public audience I guess. Wants to remain mysterious...
  3:28pm
Danne D:

@mike noble I completely believe that - you are a diligent one after all.
  3:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

@mike: Speaking of unusual guests, was it you who booked Brute Force that one time? That was one crazy performance!
  3:32pm

that was me, though i can't really take credit. his people reached out to me.

Wow, I like this. I was prepared to hate.
  4:05pm
r howard:

ahh, this is the good shit (Y)
  4:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Woo: So it always goes with Jandek: do you hate that you love it, or love that you hate it? :)
  4:06pm
glenn:

dear jandek, please please please tune your guitar.
  4:07pm
Kris Kristofferson:

You know I never wanted to admit it, I've always been a bit envious of Jandek's songwriting abilities.
  4:08pm
G:

@glenn: microtonalism!
  4:09pm
Chris from DC:

There are some gems in the catalog. Always been partial to "Blue Corpse."
  4:09pm
Woo:

Love it, hate it, I'm still not spending money on it. Although I sent a check for the pledge drive so I guess I am paying for it.
  4:11pm
paul:

the album "where do you go from here" from last year is seriously incredible. mostly instrumental, and even the songs he sings are actually quite pretty.
  4:12pm
G:

@paul: think of all the practice he's had since at least as far back as 1978
  4:15pm
Rob:

I wasn't concentrating during the intro - is this being broadcast live, or was it recorded earlier?
  4:16pm
Jimb:

Would the representative like to go out for some beers?
  4:17pm
BSI:

What the sam hill is going on in here?
  4:18pm
Tony:

I'm guessing it's pre-recorded since Ken mentioned on Twitter seeing Jandek at the station a few weeks ago.
  4:18pm
kata:

BT said it was recorded at the end of March
Avatar 4:19pm
BT:

Yes, recorded March 25th at WFMU.
  4:20pm
Bill:

Has anyone ever ordered a CD from Corwood Industries? Do I just send a check & tell them which CDs I want?
  4:22pm
Rob:

@Bill - yeah. It's totally worth ordering from him direct, too... I've done it a few times, and each time I've enclosed a short note or letter. Each parcel comes with a reply letter, answering any questions
  4:26pm
Bill:

Thanks. Any suggestions on which to get?
  4:29pm
Mary Wing:

The website says "20 or more any mix 50% discount" So if you buy 20 CDs @ $8 each, it will only cost you $80 instead of $160? Bargain!
  4:30pm
Mr Donut:

I like Glasgow Sunday (live) myself. Richard Youngs on woozy bass.
  4:30pm
Chris from DC:

Ready for the House, Telegraph Melts, and Blue Corpse are a good start. The recent live catalog sounds really interesting.
  4:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mary: After your Kraftwerk show, can I guess what we'll be hearing the week after...
  4:31pm
r howard:

'chair beside a window' is lovely and crazy
Avatar 4:31pm
BT:

They talked of this being "Jersey City Sunday", so curious to see if that comes true. would be amazing if it does....
  4:33pm
Mary Wing:

You want an all-Jandek show, Matt? Really? :-)
  4:33pm
Rob:

The first one is a good introduction to the work as a whole (Ready for the House). The later ones cover a massive stylistic range - best intro to the noisier punk style is probably Telegraph Melts (1986), best poppy one maybe Blue Corpse. (I agree with Chris from DC). My favourite 90s one is New Town... Then the live ones are great too: Portland Thursday is the last one I got, and it's awesome.
  4:33pm
hubba:

the sound is top notch!! i was starting to drift off... similar to the manhattan meets portland live stuff i've heard... can't help but think of christina carter/charlambides and this houston-based (?) rep... connection? Tom Carter played in SF a few years ago, but that was a real ugly sounding show, the way bay area rock sounds really ugly, like a bad trip.
  4:35pm
hubba:

all the live gigs are to be released eventually (supposedly)... quite the undertaking
  4:37pm
Rob:

Will this show get an official Corwood Industries pressing in the future I wonder? 'Jersey City Sunday'?
  4:39pm
Chris from DC:

Will it be archived I wonder?
Avatar 4:40pm
BT:

@ Chris, it will be archived, not downloadable. @rob, see above
  4:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

Whew! Jandek outage there for a while! Back!

@Mary: To be perfectly honest, I liked that you played a COUPLE of Jandek songs recently. 3 hours of it would just destroy the concept! (And our patience!) :)
  4:43pm
Chris from DC:

Good enough for me. Thanks!
  4:43pm
Rob:

@BT Thanks. Did the Rep give any titles for the pieces, by the way?
  4:43pm
mike noble in nyc:

one of the most incredible live shows i've ever seen was jandek with Tim Foljahn and Pete Nolan at some weird theater on the LES, april 14, 2007. at some point i realized that large numbers of people were walking out, which surprised me, until i looked at my watch and realized they had been playing for about 2 hours straight! and they kept playing for maybe another 40 minutes after that point. maybe a half dozen "songs" at most. much heavier sounding than the jandek I was used to up to that point.
Avatar 4:44pm
BT:

He didn't...
  4:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

This one goes out to Andy Breckman...
Avatar 4:47pm
BT:

I saw that show Mike. I went to another show with Pete sometime after that night and I picked his brain for Jandek personal knowledge --- safe to say that even after this WFMU visit I still don't know much more. But really enjoyed this visit, he was really nice as was everybody.
  4:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

@mike: Wow--that is heavy! But I'm sure that at least SOME people were into the entire set.
  4:50pm
hubba:

@mike this was my experience in SF, maybe... this song about a fireman sent people flying for the rafters... it was incredibly polarizing and hypnotic; i was captivated... it was, like i mentioned, really off-sounding with thundering late-80's rock bass, like nothing fit, and Sterling was just convulsing yet reserved, kinda Beefheartian... it was a unique representation... my partner was so drunk and laughing hysterically... she was like, "i thought this was going to be boring like all those cds you played me, but this is super fun!" She is not a fan per se, but holds some tinge of reverence now.

back to shutting face and listening...
  4:50pm
Rob:

Just noticed that Jandek has a new studio album out... Amazing B-movie sounding title: 'Maze of the Phantom". Anyone heard it yet?
  4:50pm
mb2:

any video stream?
  4:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

Oooh, Jandek videos! Music videos or audio with still image?
  4:54pm
Mary Wing:

Is this the Rep singing? If so, his voice sure has aged!
  4:56pm
Rob:

@Mary I reckon this is that Che Elias feller...
  4:56pm
dc:

great stuff, jandek
  4:57pm

On second listen, I think you're right, Rob. He's channeling the Rep, though, heh.
