Listener comments!

  5:30pm listener james from westwood:

giving the drummer some birthday felicitations tonight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Doug Schulkind:

This show is a piece of cake...for the drummer.
  5:36pm Matt from Springfield:

Hello Doug! Hi LJfW!

Going to have dinner with the folks tonight so I'll have to walk out early. But it's always a pleas to catch even some of your show live!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey Matt from Springfield! Always great to read you! Grab a party gift bag on your way out.
  5:39pm Matt from Springfield:

Awesome Doug. The Archive won't melt if I leave it in my car, either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Doug Schulkind:

You might wanna cover it up, though. Hate to get your window smashed by a music junkie.
  5:44pm Matt from Springfield:

I'll place it in a closed compartment, and put a WFMU bumper sticker on the back to re-direct junkies to the plentiful streams on the website.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Doug Schulkind:

NO, Matt, the music junkie is probably an FMU DJ. Liable to act irrationally.
  5:48pm Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, in that case I should probably expect Fabio frantically searching cars for the cassette Brian T took from his car without asking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Doug Schulkind:

Actually, it was an 8-track.
  5:56pm ndbob:

Evening Doug, Matt, James, everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Happy tea time, ndbob!
  5:59pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey NDbob!
Let's do this thang!
  6:02pm Carmichael:

Oh! Hi there, Doug. Couldn't see you, because you were right in front of me!
  6:03pm ndbob:

Hi Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Here's mud in yer ear, Carmichael!
  6:04pm triish:

great photo. Yay.
  6:05pm Artie:

ting ting a ting ting (repeat)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Yay, you, triiish (with an extra i because I'm ixcited).
  6:06pm Matt from Springfield:

"Straight No Chaser"--one of those names I've heard quite a bit, but not familiar with. Evidently it was originally Theolonious from 1951.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Artie, this may just be the most avant thing Han has ever played (for him).

@Matt
Yup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Doug Schulkind:

I don't mean to be ruud, oh yes I do: Ruud Jacobs on bass...
  6:11pm Matt from Springfield:

(chug) Aaaah, but indeed, straight is the only way proper way to take jazz.
  6:14pm glenn:

ohhhh. i internally confused marion brown with marion "crackhead" barry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm not the Marion kind.
  6:16pm northguineahills:

Hot Damn!
  6:16pm glenn:

whatevs, mrs c., whatevs.
  6:17pm Matt from Springfield:

Excellent solo, excellent space to perform solos in.
  6:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Drumboxing! Listen to that force!
  6:21pm Carmichael:

If I'm doing the math right, he was about 28 when he was playing this.
  6:27pm Matt from Springfield:

Gotta head out now, thanks Doug for throwing Han a nice birthday party!
(grabs bag) Mmmm, Archive looks tasty, I know what I'll be having later. See everyone later!
  6:29pm Carmichael:

Say hi to the folks, Matt!
  6:29pm triish:

See ya Matt
  6:30pm Matt from Springfield:

Sure will, Carm! See ya trish!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

That's right, Carmichael. 28 yrs and about six weeks.
  6:47pm ndbob:

Wow Doug - what a horrible story - I'm a Type 2 diabetic and don't take insulin, but my nephew is Type 1 - orange juice is the best quick fix for low blood sugar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

I was actually getting orange juice into him (we had it in the fridge for this very purpose), but he wasn't reviving. The big-ass hypodermic worked within seconds. My roommate went from catatonic to asking what's for dinner in a flash. Terrifying and fascinating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Doug Schulkind:

Looks like the show is going to be closer to 70 minutes than 60. Hope that's OK with y'all. I suppose it only makes sense on Bennink's 70th.
  6:53pm listener james from westwood:

at least he was foresighted enough to have briefed you on it, so you'd have the right response at hand.
70 is only proper, i'd say!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Doug Schulkind:

If my roommate had been black, I'm not so sure the paramedics would've been as quick to believe that he wasn't a junkie. Even WITH me producing his bottle of insulin.
  6:56pm triish:

Better music minutes than burning candles.

Or diabetic shocks.
  6:59pm ndbob:

Yep Doug - it's amazing how fast recovery can be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Doug Schulkind:

One more 3-minute gem after this should take us to about 7:06ish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Well you take good care, ndbob. Same goes for every sweet set of ears out there.
  7:06pm listener james from westwood:

muchas gracias, doug, and happy 70th, han!
  7:06pm ndbob:

My sugar has been good lately - just take my meds and eat junk food in moderation.
  7:07pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Cheers! Everyone!
  9:48am Van in DC:

Once again, it's that time of the day, when GTDS is taking over my airwaves, in the ether listening to the archive. Time to find out the deal on Han here, the great vibrational manipulator. Boom sphlat. :)
  9:57am Doug Schulkind:

You may be saddened to learn that I did not play any of Han's performances on his drum set made of cheese. A quick scan of Youtube will remedy that...
  10:20am Van in DC:

Well eDAM! :)

Enjoying this! Pulled up WKCR's website...never heard of them before.
  10:58am Van in DC:

This show was wunderbar! Thank you Mr. Drummer and drummer Han!
