Listener comments!

  3:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

The M.E. business? What's that, the "Myself Enjoyment" business?
  3:01pm
G:

Still the best intro/theme song on the station, imho
  3:03pm
Michael:

Is that Mitzi Irwin? Did you know her? Sad news.
  3:03pm
G:

Uh oh, sorry, did I just slam anyone? Didn't intend to :-)
  3:04pm
Irwin:

@Michael: A long-time beloved client.
  3:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

Raymond Scott's widow. RIP.
  3:08pm
Keith in VT:

Lee Renaldo's disk is the best of the year (imho). Who da thunk?
  3:08pm
Michael:

Well Gingersnaps for Mitzi! Very nice remembrance Irwin.
  3:09pm
TJ:

I've been meaning to check this one out. So far so good.
  3:09pm
Mike East:

so far, I think I might agree with you, Keith in VT.
  3:13pm
Carmichael:

Hiya Irwin and others.
  3:16pm
Runoff Groove:

Always listen to me--I might have a hidden message!
  3:18pm
Runoff Groove:

Matt from Springfield:

"Enthusiasm Gap with...It Doesn't Matter"
  3:19pm
Aharon:

Hey, Irwin, I don't think you've ever played Kleenex Girl Wonder. I imagine, based on the tiny sliver of yourself you make public on this show, that you'd like it.
  3:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Knife for Mrs. Miller--dee-lightful!
Thought this was going to be ECC, but it's very good, kind of like them.
  3:21pm
Irwin:

@Aharon: Note to self. Will seek.
  3:24pm
Denise in DC:

Hello all.
  3:24pm
Simon:

Hello! I remember this. Nice Hammond
  3:27pm
Bill:

Has anyone seen "Jandek on Corwood". I just got it in the mail from Netflix.
  3:28pm
Denise in DC:

A video, Bill? A documentary?
  3:28pm
Permanent:

I hate this song.
  3:29pm
Bill:

Yes, it's a documentary. Apparently he does not make an appearance in it though. Just wondeirng how good it could be. I guess I'll find out soon enough.
  3:29pm
Rarus Avis:

Nice start, Irwin. Thank you. I can see your show going in many directions depending on the fates driving a mood or a pood of food.
  3:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Dat crazy Sexton!

Hello Denise, everyone!
  3:31pm
Aharon:

@Irwin: Cool. I recommend the most recent Kleenex Girl Wonder album, "Secret Thinking," esp. the title song.
  3:31pm
Denise in DC:

Hey Matt!
  3:31pm
Rarus Avis:

This Sexcon/Childish reminds me of playing "Major Dog: Be Kind To Cats" backwards.
  3:32pm
Droll:

Bill, I didn't realize Corwood licensed the sync rights to the Jandek catalog. You'd think he'd show up more often as backing music in some commercials, or at least some political ads.
  3:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

Alma! These songs of hers always give me a smile!
  3:33pm
Dafydd:

Hey, this is cool.
  3:35pm
Bill:

Sorry...what are sync rights? Is it possible they just did this without asking? If you haven't already you can search for this on netflix.
  3:35pm
Denise in DC:

Ruth Etting! Watched the Doris Day/James Cagney movie about her recently. Cagney was awesome. Day's acting wasn't fabulous, but her singing was.
  3:37pm
Denise in DC:

Wow, the stream is way behind the playlist for me. I'm just hearing the Alma song now.
  3:40pm
Dafydd:

Maybe the stream is going backwards for you? Do you feel younger?
  3:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

Denise, you can get up to speed by refreshing your stream (but not just yet--everything after Alma's been good so far. Refresh during one of Irwin's long, jazz instrumentals :)
  3:40pm
Denise in DC:

Thanks for the tip, Matt.
  3:41pm
Dafydd:

Bad as me is probably Tom Wait's best release! Fantastic.
  3:41pm
kat330:

Ok, outta the shower and in the catbird seat. Nice reentry with the Tom Waits.
  3:42pm
Dizzy G.:

What??--I was on *fire* during that track! That was the absolute gold of 20 takes, never would I imagine people would someday use it to cut through a Internet stream..!
  3:42pm
kat330:

@Matt: from way at the top. I thought perhaps the Windows Millennium Edition biz. ;)
  3:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: No wonder, Millenium Edition techs are usually full of themselves! :)

Much appreciate the Ruth Etting, twice in 24!
  3:44pm
Droll:

Bill, Sync rights are one of the myriad ways to monetize the work that went into making the music. In Jandek's case, that's a princely negative sum given his "bulk pricing". I look forward to your review next week!
  3:47pm
Bill:

Droll, thanks for filling me in. I will report back next week!
  3:48pm
kat330:

IRWIN: May 30th? Isn't that also when TMBG will be on 7SD (UCB I presume)?
  3:49pm
Denise in DC:

TMBG on 7SD? How did Ken and Andy pull that off?
  3:51pm
kat330:

@Denise: Before you get excited, I'm relying on a memory from weeks ago. At my age, I could completely wrong. But I think Ken said that in his playlist. Maybe from March 28th? I'll check.
  3:51pm
Denise in DC:

Okay, my stream's caught up with the playlist now. Thanks, Matt!
  3:51pm
Irwin:

Ken says TMBG not confirmed.
  3:55pm
kat330:

Thanks, Irwin. Found the playlist ref on 3-28 IAE: "Ken:

Kat330, TMBG might play seven sec delay on May 30."
  3:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

Awesome, Denise "in Sync"!
  3:56pm
?:

A friend of mine turned me on to Junip. Love love love these guys. Hello, Sweden!
  3:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: TMBG already appeared at a UCB show--meaning they probably hadn't heard of 7SD before then. But now that they know about it, you can expect them to avoid it like the plague now!
  3:59pm
kat330:

Yeah, well it would be one stellar afternoon with Ivana XL and TMBG. Battle of the initials.
  4:00pm
Kat's Shower Door:

Hey. You see that squeegee in the corner? How about picking that bad boy up and giving me a bit of a wipedown, hmmm?
  4:01pm
kat330:

AAMOF we DO have a squeegee hanging in the shower, but no door. Ergo, you don't exist *poof*
  4:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

Jeez, nowadays even our inanimate fixtures can post comments and bother us...
  4:03pm
Kat's Shower Tiles:

Whatevs, babe. Whatevs.
  4:03pm
Kat's Shower Tiles:

P.s. - aamof?
  4:04pm
kat330:

If you were whom you claim to be, you'd know you're squeegeed just fine. Ergo, you are an imposter. *poof*
  4:04pm
kat330:

More proof. MY shower tiles would know that AAMOF means as a matter of fact. Ha!
  4:08pm
Kat's Shower Tiles:

Fine. We'll just go to Switzerland with Michelle Bachmann. Then where will you be?
  4:08pm
Kat's Real Shower Tiles:

@Kat's Fake Shower Tiles: She talks to herself in the shower -- in textese yet.
  4:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

I thought Michelle Bachmann doesn't believe in the existence of Switzerland (even though her husband looks mighty Swiss to me)
  4:10pm
Carmichael:

Hmmm .. where does she think the Alps are? Boy, revisionist history can get pretty dicey.
  4:10pm
Rarus Avis:

At least it's known that Michelle Bachmann doesn't know where Switzerland is, so of course it doens't exist.
  4:12pm
Sarah:

If i can't see it from my house in Alaska, it doesn't exist. You betcha.
  4:12pm
Denise in DC:

@Kat's Fake Shower Tiles: it's obvious -- Kat will be on the moon with Newt Gingrich.
  4:13pm
Denise in DC:

Even ol' Sarah could have seen the moon this past week.
  4:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

Karen Carpenter was a great "self-harmonizer".
  4:14pm
Denise in DC:

Matt: how dare you!
  4:14pm
kat330:

Please do go to Switzerland, Michelle B. and fake shower tiles. Just let me warn some friends in Winterthur first.
  4:16pm
Switzerland:

Keep that manky twat away from me.
  4:16pm
kat330:

@Denise: Now my turn, how dare you! :) I'll be on Mars (Mars Cat was a handle I used way back in my BBS daze, AAMOF) with Bowie.
  4:17pm
Winterthur:

aka the gold coast
  4:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Denise: My Gruyere-Dar is seldom off.
  4:17pm
Schaffhausen:

What am I, chopped raclette?
  4:18pm
Irwin:

Make fun of my gals, go ahead. I'll take Palin for POTUS over the current IDIOTUS.
  4:19pm
Webhamster Henry:

I was actually at that UCB 7SD TMBG show and they were very happy with it. That may have been because Andy was being crucified.
  4:19pm
Carmichael:

Sarah Quayle-in.
  4:19pm
IDIOTUS:

This is a democracy, I'll have you know, and the idiots are always in a majority. If you can get them to bother voting.
  4:20pm
WaveyDavey:

I say we write in Irwin for POTUS
  4:21pm
kat330:

@Winterthur: My friends are a professor of English and an artist, so doubt if there's anything Gold Coast-y in their neck of your fair city.
  4:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Wavey: At least he's libertarian, and liable to piss off all the inflexible kinds of people I like to see pissed off.

Still, I'd prefer him as Veep under the Great Goddess of Cookie AMANDA!!!!!!!!
"Freedom of Screech, 2012!!!"
  4:23pm
kat330:

@WH: Then there's still hope they'll show on May 30th -- cool. If we could promise another Andyfixion?
  4:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

I think Andyfixions are the only sure fix for getting guests to stay.
  4:28pm
G:

backing up kat: I stayed in a friend of a friend's apartment in Winterthur once, when they were out of town. Roacherrific after dusk!
  4:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

@G: Damn! Just when I thought the cost of living in Winterthur had finally priced the roaches out of town!
  4:30pm
kat330:

G, hey, where were you when those fake shower tiles were giving me a hard time?
  4:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Tropical" bed music again! I still love this, pull it out at least once per show, Irwin!
  4:34pm
kat330:

That Mantler gave me a hankering for "Harlem Nocturne."
  4:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

As someone pointed out however, "East Orange" is the color of this playlist. Surely you can announce comment board colors in lieu of license location for FCC required IDs.
  4:36pm
kat330:

Gross repeated a fine interview with Sendak on Fresh Air a couple of days ago.
  4:36pm
Denise in DC:

Maurice Jandek! That could be a mindblowing matchup.
  4:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

Really Rosie!! "Chicken Soup With Rice"!! We once watched that movie when I was in early grades of elementary school. I was pleasantly surprised to find out years later Carole King sang and Maurice Sendak wrote it.

Pierre, where are ya? ;)
  4:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

Maurice Jandek:
Maurice S. tries to play guitar while improvising non-rhyming poetry, all while being recorded!
  4:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

So ol' Mr. Sendak was curmudgeonly in his old age? A bit of a surprise to me but entirely expected by the time he's 83. Surprisingly because around the time of the "Where The Wild Things Are" movie, Rolling Stone posted their long interview with him in Dec '76 on their website. It's one of my fav interviews ever. RIP to a creative genius.
  4:41pm
Maurice S.:

I Drew "What Can You Do with a Shoe".
  4:41pm
G:

I was Real Tiles, kat :-P
  4:43pm
Phil R:

Now I need a little chicken soup with rice
  4:43pm
kat330:

In that case, G, thanks for having my back. I'll always have yours w/ my squeegee after all.
  4:43pm
Ike:

Stephen Colbert's interviews of Sendak are HILARIOUS. Check them out online.

Great show, Irwin. Now I have to close this page FAST because if my boss catches me on here again, the free hand of the market will smush me and my paycheck.
  4:44pm
Bill:

Aah...thanks for reminding me about David Kilgour Irwin!
  4:44pm
G:

Mhm. :-P
  4:44pm
autumn:

He drew beautiful cats. Cats love Maurice.
  4:46pm
Philo Gristle:

Years since I'd heard David Kilgour, thanks Irwin! Hello all!
  4:47pm
The Joker:

Some people call me Maurice. (cat call)...
  4:47pm
kat330:

Awwww tumn! Did you see this wonderful pic? http://www.buzzfeed.com/samir/these-two-cats-are-best-friends
  4:48pm
Caryn:

Seriously, MCA and Sendak die within a week? This has not been a good start to a month.
  4:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

Aha! Whew, finally! Thought for a while there they had taken it offline:
http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/news/maurice-sendak-king-of-all-wild-things-20120508

This is such a lovely interview with the creator of those strange, fantastic worlds; patient, lingering, cerebral, super deep self-explorations into his past, experiences, inspirations. And an interviewer encouraging him in that path. *Why* aren't there interviews like this anymore?
  4:50pm
Timb:

Listening from Florida. Great show! Keep up the great work!
  4:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

Oh yeah, Dec '76, they were both probably on tons of weed at the time! See how lame culture and arts are nowadays, when people are no longer stoned all the time! ;)
  4:51pm
Droll:

Caryn, Don't forget Mitzi Scott. They come in threes.
  4:51pm
kat330:

Caryn, I wrote this on Amanda's list earlier, but it's something been in my mind of late: Here's the thing with our media saturation since the mid-twentieth century:The numbers of notable pop culture icon deaths can only grow geometrically. Soon the "in memoriam" segments of shows will require the lion's share of time that, perhaps more rightly, should be devoted to the living. Either that or many dead will get short shrift.
  4:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Droll: Sadly the last couple weeks are just full of prominent RIPs, hard to group into 3s (or 2s, as Bronwyn C groups celeb deaths).
  4:52pm
Denise in DC:

Okay, I am officially in love with Ivana XL.
  4:53pm
Jim Carroll:

All my Friends...
  4:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Arthur's Theme" is a nice song, and I also love how Ivana XL handles covers.
  4:55pm
kat330:

Thanks for the link, Matt.
  4:58pm
G:

@kat: At the bottom of page 2264A of the Affordable Care Act, clause 22 of provision 17 in footnote 8 authorizes the HHS Secretary to create and fund of a Celebrity Death Commemoration Panel, to triage this issue as members of the Panel shall from time to time deem necessary. Partisan hacks deliberately misinterpreted that "Death Panel" footnote in 2009-10, you may recall.

kat330:

Wow, breaking news!
  5:03pm
Listening Out There:

Gee, G! Good point...
  5:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Woohoo! Bare and Silverstein always pair well!
And this one in particular is excellent.
  5:03pm
The Economy:

@glenn: No one talks about me. :-(

I just don't get politicians. What could I be missing??? :-)
  5:04pm
earwax:

@glenn - Yay!
  5:04pm
glenn:

i'm not sure if i've ever heard shel singing any of his own tunes.
  5:05pm
Denise in DC:

Goddamn it, Obama. You couldn't make this statement before the vote in North Carolina?
  5:06pm
kat330:

Now a second children's song involving food, cartoonists, and some variation of the name "Rose". Hm.
  5:07pm
Philo Gristle:

Wasn't this the album that had Marie LaVeau on it too? The one Girl Trouble later covered. Always really dug the original... and why doesn't anyone ever play Tompall Glaser anymore?
  5:07pm
kat330:

@Denise: Yes, timing certainly could have been better.
  5:09pm
Jeff Liberty aka Whitney 3:

I'd luv you to play my Uncle Ray Peterson (RIP) sometime... "Tell Laura I Love her"... P & L, W3
  5:09pm
Carmichael:

@Glenn: I used to hear him sing The Great Smoke Off" on Dr. Demento, back in a previous life.
  5:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

@glenn: Excellent progress!
@Denise: I was just thinking that Obama probably didn't say anything until the NC state vote was over - because he perceived that if it was likely to fail, let it fail on its own, without mud being thrown about "Obama's agenda" in a state that might not elect him in November.
  5:10pm
kat330:

Guess "children's songs" was quite a stretch. But still a connection.
  5:13pm
pierre:

Bonjour Irwin !
and bonjour listeners !

late, but here.
  5:13pm
glenn:

i think sylvia's mother is my fave.
  5:15pm
Carmichael:

The 1st concert I ever attended was Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show.
  5:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

I sensed that this "Dear Prudence" intro would turn out to be Klaus :D
  5:15pm
Caryn:

Yay, Klaus!
  5:16pm
Philo Gristle:

1st show, Hank Marvin & The Shadows.
  5:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

Bonjour pierre!
There was a song about you on earlier--we assumed that you were tired after being swallowed and pulled out of a lion's belly :)
  5:17pm
johnnykevlar:

Whoa, what is this?
  5:17pm
Caryn:

1st show: Chuck Berry.
  5:17pm
glenn:

b.b. king. it was outdoors. a bird shit on my head. then it rained.
  5:18pm
Philo Gristle:

Kat says from the kitchen: 'Klaus is obviously Irwin's new Amanda.'
  5:18pm
Caryn:

@johnnykevlar: http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/0,1518,783593,00.html
  5:19pm
G:

@johnny: Impressively mass-scale Beatles karaoke/adaptation in German. See Borges's story "Pierre Menard's Quijote"...
  5:19pm
pierre:

@Matt : the Maurice Sendak one ?
(i'm ashamed to be late, usually wfmu it's what keeps me from banging my head on walls form work… this time a banged a bit hard, and could tune in only now…)
  5:19pm
Kat's Shower Tiles:

Tell her she missed a spot.
  5:19pm
Irwin:

@Philo: check the archives. Been playing Klaus for 10+ years.
  5:21pm
G:

@pierre: I was thinking they kicked you out of the corner bistro at 11PM Paris time, so they could put the chairs upside down on the tables and mop the floor.
  5:21pm
Droll:

glenn, Even though you couldn't hear me, I apologize for laughing so hard at your 1st concert story.
  5:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Jessica Kane! Long time no monologue!
  5:22pm
Philo Gristle:

@Shower Tiles: In the kitchen?

@Irwin: As you should have. Klaus works like aspirin.
  5:22pm
Denise in DC:

Ah, Jessica Kane. Long time no hear, at least for me.
  5:23pm
glenn:

b.b. killed it, i gotta say.
  5:23pm
pierre:

@ G : that's exactly how i feel, minus the fun.
  5:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@pierre: Yes, the Maurice Sendak one. It's a cute little children's song, sung by Carole King.
  5:23pm
G:

@pierre: that's gotta hurt :-( feel better! :-)
  5:24pm
Caryn:

@glenn: well, your experiences fit the blues music being played. Maybe B.B. took note and you inspired a song.
  5:24pm
G:

Did BB ever cover the Bird Shit Blues?
  5:24pm
Jim Carroll:

Ohh, we have a badass journalist here!
  5:25pm
glenn:

what g said.
  5:25pm
pierre:

have you seen that RSM, is on the front page of the WIRE magazine ?
  5:26pm
G:

or maybe the bird shit covered him, right glenn? :-P
  5:26pm
Irwin:

@Pierre: in the US we refer to that as the "cover."
  5:27pm
Irwin:

On that cover, RSM is covered with beard.
  5:27pm
Carmichael:

For just a brief scary moment, I thought this was Burton Cummings.
  5:28pm
drunken monkey:

Just like the Germans... swooping in & taking something, then spackling it with a bit of Teutonic culture to claim it as their own

@Irwin: Sorry. I've only been hearing Klaus the past several weeks, and I only started listening here for maybe 7 months total. Finding time to get into archives is like there being enough time in 2020 to give all the dying icons their due tributes.

@Tiles: Seriously, go play some Mah Jongg or make a mosaic. There are no tiles in the kitchen -- just some rice on the stove so far.

pierre:

@ Irwin : sorry, sometimes fmu is a field for english experiences. In France "cover" and "blanket" is the same : "couverture".

He is covered with beard, comb-letely ! (mwouarf…)

  5:41pm
Irwin:

What prevented Procol Harum from being the Moody Blues was the fact that lyricist Keith Reid was OUT OF HIS FUCKING MIND to a Syd-style degree.
  5:42pm
kat330:

Just a hint of Moonlight Sonata in there.
  5:42pm
Carmichael:

You make that sound like a bad thing, Irwin ....
