Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from May 8, 2012 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

CHeri Pi:

bonjour Brian Returner!
  3:02pm
paula pc:

cheri pi said it perfectly!!!!
  3:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hooray Brian! Welcome back from Europa!
Off to a great start with Tom Verlaine and Kim Fowley.
Avatar 3:03pm
BT:

Hey gang, super to be back.
  3:03pm
last.fm/user/johnnykevlar:

Whoa! Is this new Kim Fowley? This is nuts.
  3:04pm
paula pc:

Brian, have you ever been to a Sonic Protest event???
  3:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

The girls he dates use him for free fast food? I should just take burn victims to Burger King on a date--seals the deal..
  3:06pm
Cheri Pi:

ooooh Bimbo Tower, fancy!
  3:07pm
Matt from Springfield:

"What?! C'mon baby, I didn't know you recoil from fire-grilled meat!"
  3:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

Also I like this song, whatever language it's in.
  3:11pm
Cecile:

hola, all!
  3:11pm
Cecile:

ha I found my Christ Child album the other week. Still haven't played it. Still need a better turntable.
  3:14pm
das:

Christ is kicking my ass over here.
  3:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hola Cecilia!
Do you need a new needle, is the speed off, or is it just a general problem?
  3:19pm
Cecile:

It's just sloth and untidiness. And the fact my turntable is about a billion years old.
  3:19pm
fred:

@paula pc: he missed it again. But next year I'm sure he can even have a DJ set there if he wants to.

My fave track on that Sonic Protest comp: Puech/Gourdon/Bremaud
  3:20pm
Mr Donut:

yay! Welcome back BT!
  3:21pm
paula pc:

@ fred - merci! I need to check this year's comp out, I can see...
  3:23pm
fred:

@paula pc: might not be all that easy to find, but I think most tracks will get played on this very station, eventually

Were you there this year?
  3:24pm
northguineahills:

I love old school Japanese noise!
  3:26pm
pierre:

Bonjour Brian !
Glad to hear you back after hearing you in Paris !
  3:28pm
last.fm/user/johnnykevlar:

Does anyone have anything they want to ask Steve Albini?
  3:28pm
fred:

Salut pierre!
There will be a Benjamin Bret / Manuel J Grotesque gig in Paris June 8. More details as soon as I get them
  3:29pm
pierre:

fantastic fred, thanks !
  3:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Love Charlemagne Palestine!
Bonjour once again, pierre!
  3:32pm
fred:

@pierre: This week: Api Uiz on Saturday @palais de tokyo (!). And tomorrow Eric Cordier, Arnaud Riviere and others @scopitone
  3:33pm
pierre:

I wish i could come to ApiUiz, but it's to many work time on my side…
  3:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Did you meet BT when he was in Paris, pierre?
Anyone else here meet our roving DJ in Europe?
  3:34pm
fake herman cain:

where is Uzbekistan? & who is in charge?
  3:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

The noise with the Stones' "Emotional Rescue" bass--keep forgetting about this track but remember that one fragment. Prob because I was trying to figure out where I'd heard that bass before.
  3:42pm
fred:

@pierre: no way you can miss this! We'll be giving them grief for years over this -- and already started -- with TF1 as a sponsor to boot. I'm sure you can spare that time.
There's a chance another great Ian Saboya project (le cercle des mallissimalistes) will play in Paris July 1. But no word of a Chocolat Billy gig :-(
Avatar 3:45pm
BT:

Hey Pierre n Fred, great to hang! I forgot to say that after the DJ thing i walked up the street to some Senegalese restaurant and there was an insane rockin show going on, JB-style leisure suit dude running down the aisles singing thru booming PA --- Paris ruled!
  3:45pm
fred:

@Matt: we both met BT after his DJ set in Paris. I heard him offer to have a session with the band who played after him, and that could be amazing. They're part of Headwar, one of the best French bands right now
Avatar 3:50pm
BT:

Yes! So great....
  3:52pm
fred:

@Matt: their name was "les morts vont bien", but I don't think they have anything out. But they *might* put stuff on the FMA someday
Avatar 3:54pm
BT:

I think they said their LP was out this week, wanna get that sucker...great great set.
  3:54pm
pierre:

@ Matt : i even was wearing my Brian Chippendale t shirt :)

@ Fred : i'm afraid, this is going to be difficult, i'm stopping work around 03.00am these days…
Oh yeah, the singer from "les morts vont bien" has the FMA adress now, she has to do it :)

@ BT : glad you enjoy your stay, that means i'll be able to offer you more wine next time ! :-)
  3:56pm
fred:

@BT: They came close to playing on Keili's show last year. What ruined it is that they played in a 21+ venue first, she was too young to get there.
  3:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

Awesome, glad everyone had an amazing time!
I hope to do a WFMU meetup in a very distant place someday! :)
  3:57pm
pierre:

@ BT : could you record the "leisure suit dude" ?
  3:59pm
fred:

@Matt: if you select Paris, pierre volunteered to organize meetups there, he's the one to contact
  3:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Brian: Yeah, the visuals on that Senegal dude are...wow! What kind of music? Rock/soul, "traditional" African, a dancehall like beat?
  4:01pm
fred:

Filastine keeps being great, I'd love to see him again, he was really good when I saw him live
  4:02pm
Brett W. Thompson:

Filastine sounds great!
  4:03pm
northguineahills:

Yeah, I haven't seen him (Filatine) in almost 4 years, I believe w/ Rupture. He's always onto new stuff.
  4:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Well I still want to go back to London, and I've always wanted to ride the Chunnel--with such a strong FMU fanbase in both I would definitely contact for meetups in both cities! Pierre, I'll call you on the Mat-phone in case I'm in Paris! :)
  4:07pm
pierre:

You're welcome in Paris, anytime Matt !

On that topic, one of the great thing about the radio, is that, i've been a radio listeners for a long long time, and since i know wfmu, i keep on wanting to meet people related to this great thing, it's awesome to meet people talk about whatever, and share some drink. It's social media made flesh !
  4:13pm
fred:

@pierre: it might take some more prompting to get Krine and Nico to get stuff on the FMA.
Can anyone upload music there now or would they need a curator?
  4:13pm
Andy S.:

Cosmic coincidence: I was writing something about Michael Chapman and listening to the show online when suddenly you started talking about him! Thanks, BT, for your continuing support of this great and underrated artist.
  4:14pm
Andreas:

Gutted I missed the Chapman show Brian, sounding great. Excellent seeing you and hanging out in Glasgow tho.
  4:16pm
northguineahills:

I think I was at Tonic thrice a week from 2000 until it closed, april 14, 2007. Fun place to randomly show up, and more then likely would have good music. Fun place to dj too. I really miss that place. It was my cultural sanctuary.
  4:17pm
fred:

@NGH: so where do you hang out now?
  4:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

Great Slavic folk!
Avatar 4:19pm
BT:

Hey Andreas --- killer to see you too! Sink the Bismark! Good thing not too much of that, the prop plane to Dublin next morn was rattling my skull the way it was....
  4:19pm
Gene K:

Great song by Yanka!
Also to check out Grazhdanskaya Oborona (trans. Civil Defense), one of the first and most influential Russian/Soviet punk bands. Yanka was very much affiliated with them during her musical career. Thanks!
  4:23pm
Andreas:

Yeah, that stuff is for rare occasions and small measures only I think. Heading down there just now actually to catch up with Ruaraidh and Cheer, so I'll have to catch up with the rest of the show later. Have a good one.
  4:24pm
jt:

wow, that yanka track was amazing
  4:25pm
paula pc:

so I look up that yanka track, and of course, Brian is thanked on the page I find: http://www.filmcement.org/rummage/archives/000343.html
Avatar 4:26pm
BT:

wow, that's shocking....
  4:26pm
fred:

Seems Brian is everywhere but Sonic Protest. You have to fix that, BT.
  4:27pm
earwax:

Does anyone know where there is a translation of the Yanka song?
  4:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Gene for that great bit of history!
@paula: Yep, thanks and acknowledgments to WFMU people (Brian, Irwin, Irene Trudel, Jason Sigal, Terre T et al..) can be found all over the web, on amazing bands' pages!
  4:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Go Benbecula! (I don't know anything about the label, but I know Benbecula is one of the distant isles of Scotland!)
  4:30pm
northguineahills:

@Fred, there no longer seems to central place for good shows w/ a sense of community. I just show up at random shows any more.
  4:32pm
dc pat:

Yanka Dyagileva track was great and now I have to go through her stuff. Later and thanks.
  4:32pm
Gene K:

@Matt: You welcome!

Brian, could you give a link or provide more info about the Siberian PsyPunk special? Much obliged...
  4:34pm
Ike:

Dug that Alec Cheer greatly.

Boss is away today, so I can comment!
  4:34pm
Ruaraidh:

Cheer rules! Especially cos it's his round!
  4:35pm
fred:

@NGH: that sucks. I guess the only way to really measure how precious these places are is to lose them. Which sucks too
  4:35pm
Stanley:

Hi Brian glad you got back okay. Great to see you in Glasgow.
Avatar 4:36pm
BT:

Sure, its this show from 2008: www.wfmu.org...
And yeah, I found a Yanka disc in Brighton Beach of all her albums on an MP3 disc, great stuff....

  4:38pm
Cecile:

where's Madam in all this?
  4:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

@glowing: Hells yeah! Like...a falsetto Professor Elemental with a disco backbeat!
  4:39pm
Liz B.:

I know PB was a fraud, but this is one of the best records ever!
  4:40pm
SteveL:

If you follow Plastic Bertrand with Stinky Toys, I'm running home to check the record cabinet. (I will also be smiling quite a bit.)
  4:41pm

Ruaraidh (if you're still there) - any idea which venue Milk Music is at a week saturday.
  4:41pm
the glowing one:
