Listener comments!

  12:02pm
too much coffee:

woah there.. this is heavy stuff
  12:03pm
Cecile:

hey duane!
  12:04pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Hellloooo Duane!
  12:04pm
Duane:

Hello everyone!!!
  12:06pm
Cecile:

You can send out "Hit and Run" to Amy Senser, a local socialite who was just convicted of running over a well-loved Thai chef in Minneapolis.
  12:07pm
Merman:

THis Moodymann is reminding me of Ethel Waters.
  12:07pm
paula pc:

seeds such a nice start -- work of Madlib, no? Had read about but not heard until now...
  12:08pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Yeah Madlib indeed
  12:10pm
Emily:

woah! great set!
  12:10pm
Duane:

Cecile: Ouch! I saw a posting about that in a feed. *smh*
Merman: It's a Billie rework of "that ole devil called love" I think
  12:10pm
Nathan:

Duaniacs in the house!
  12:11pm
Merman:

An interesting take on the old Love Unlimited track.
  12:11pm
robyn:

what a nice start. hi everybody
  12:13pm
Cecile:

yeah, it was pretty outrageous. The act was terrible enough, but if she would have stopped and called 911, none of this would have happened.
  12:15pm
Cecile:

but then again, there wouldn't be any ID TV if people used their common sense. Or at least the programs would be very short.
  12:17pm
Orichalcum:

I've been thinking of Terence Trent D'Arby lately. Is it just me or did anyone else think it strange that he faded out so fast. I guess he lives in Milan now and records under his real name. Just a thought on a misty Manhattan afternoon.
  12:18pm
Mike East:

Oh yes, I need this show today. Thanks Duane.
  12:19pm
Cecile:

I think about him surprisingly often, Ori.
Always liked him better than Lenny Kravitz, but LK's workmanlike attitude resonated with the public better, I guess.

Yay! BBs.
  12:21pm
22-Minute World:

Ha ha! Did he just say 1010 WINS. That's pretty funny.
  12:21pm
kata:

good morning Duane and commenting people! I'm back after two weeks off headphones. Missed you all !
  12:21pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Perfect BB track to play...
  12:21pm
max:

This beastie boys track is amazing!! So good
  12:22pm
Jeremy Shatan:

I think about TTD not a whit. Never bought the hype. However, obviously, I've been thinking about MCA ALOT. Here's what I wrote, if you're interested: www.anearful.blogspot.com. And yes, this is awesome!
  12:25pm
Displaced New Yorker:

Duane, I'm freshly on Pacific Time and your show is exactly what I need to fight the jet lag. Thanks so much.
  12:27pm
Vote:

Snow - Informer vs. 3rd Bass - Pop Goes The Weasel
  12:30pm
Cecile:

Steppin' to the AM beats both of them.
  12:33pm
Kat in Chicago:

<3 Osunlade
  12:33pm
alex:

my favorite Dr. John album!
  12:35pm
Renny Bach:

I got out my old LP copy of Gris-Gris the other day. Only after MOJO told me it was cool, I shamefacedly admit.
  12:36pm
alex:

woops Rationals version i guess...
  12:40pm
Cecile:

Gerardo discovered Bubba Sparxxx, whose Deliverance album I will defend until the day I die.
  12:41pm
Orichalcum:

Are we speaking of the Rico Suave Gerardo?
  12:42pm
Cecile:

yes!
  12:44pm
vanessa:

Holler!
  12:45pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Love Bubba - Dark Days, Dark Nights is still HOT & features some of Tim's best beats. I didn't know about the Gerardo connections. Rrrrrrico suave.
  12:46pm
Mike Love Not War:

So strange that you played this. I was just wishing I could see the beach Boys at the Beacon tonight. Never thought I'd see Love and Brian onstage again. That track That's WHy God Made The Radio I kind of nostalgically dig.
  12:47pm
Cecile:

he becamed a very successful A&R guy.
  12:49pm
Duane:

Yeah Osunalade produced most of Gerardo's 2nd album..he also was dating Toni Basil when he was 17. Living with her as well.
  12:51pm
Nathan:

Toni Basil's - You Gotta Problem is an oft overlooked single in my book...
  12:51pm
Blackwood Quinn:

THose are some heavy MTV roots. Basil and Gerardo.
  12:54pm
Kat in Chicago:

Duane: that's wild. I didn't know either of those fun facts!
  12:55pm
Slacktivist Steve:

OMG I have to get back to WORK. Duane, you distract me so with your masterful mixology. This is reminding me of the Lost orizon soundtrack, which I love.
  1:00pm
Duane:

Slacktivist Steve: I just saw Lost Horizon for the first time last month!! SO good. I've been slackin on my classic movies
  1:00pm
Cecile:

when is there going to be a Jean Carn unsung?
  1:02pm
Duane:

Cecile: She's so unsung, she might as well be spoken word:)
  1:02pm
Duane:

Cecile: RUmor is that there is an Eddy Grant unsung coming though
  1:02pm
Cecile:

unsung schedule for June:
Sly Stone, Gerald Levert, the Marvelettes, Kool Moe Dee, Angela Bofill, Arrested Development and Confunkshun.

I squeed when I saw Kool Moe Dee, I cannot lie.
  1:03pm
Cecile:

oh, cool Duane. He sure needs one.
hahahhahaha Duane.
  1:04pm
Duane:

I saw that too! Marvelettes!!
  1:05pm
Mike East:

Holy crap, Cecile. I keep hearing you guys talk about that show and have yet to see it. That line up is awesome. I need to check it out. Thanks for the tip.
  1:05pm
Cecile:

this is amazing.
Reminds me of The Money$ too tight to mention: soul + electronics.
  1:07pm
Cecile:

and this is new-ish! wow, cool.
  1:07pm
Duane:

yeah the Colonel rarely lets you down
  1:07pm
paula pc:

what Duane said!!!!!!!!
  1:09pm
Cecile:

must have.
  1:11pm
paula pc:

killer site, cecile...http://www.omarsdetroit.us/index.php
  1:16pm
Cecile:

Goodies galore! wow.
  1:18pm
still b/p:

Dentist visit took the first hour away from me. This is much more enjoyable, orally, aurally, financially.
  1:19pm
www.last.fm/user/johnnykevlar:

Nightlife Reconsidered is by Garo, not Slava.
  1:20pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Secret LIfe, totally totally underrated album...
  1:20pm
Duane:

THanx for the correction. Duly noted
  1:26pm
Cecile:

so colonel abrams is making new music with Omar S? it's not remixes? I'm really curious!
  1:26pm
Kat in Chicago:

I'm glad you made the correction because I just put a note in my phone to hunt down that awesome track later - something I am in the habit of doing during this show :)
  1:29pm
Caryn:

Yay, Duane! Missed the start because my computer's been acting up ever since I updated my browser. Spent the weekend in funk heaven, listening to The Headhunters, Lafayette Afro Rock Band, Jackie Mittoo and Horace Silver. And then took a detour to youtube to listen to Japanese funk. A shamisen jam is definitely something to hear!
  1:33pm
robyn:

great show so far duane. so mellow. my productivity is suffering...but i don't mind.
  1:33pm
robyn:

(it's usually suffering anyway...)
  1:33pm
Cecile:

D-Train!
  1:34pm
Caryn:

I wish they'd show Unsung over here :(
  1:36pm
Cecile:

I think you can watch it on TV1's website.
  1:37pm
kata:

"something on my mind" is such a great song.
  1:42pm
Caryn:

@Cecile: they have 9 episodes available online, but that's it. Still, better than nothing! :)
  1:43pm
Cheri Pi:

it's ESG backwards!
  1:43pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Cheri: lol
  1:44pm
Duane:

Caryn: Wow!!! That's a pretty heavy weekend. I'm impressed! You should check youtube for Unsung episodes as well. The sylvester is definitely up there
  1:48pm
Caryn:

@Duane: yeah, my weekend made me come to the conclusion that "Survival of the Fittest" is my favourite Headhunters album, that the LARB is wayyyyyy underrated, and that Haruomi Hosono can get funky when need be.
  1:55pm
Nathan:

Oh for those looking for the unsung documentaries... Youtube of course!

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=unsung+documentary
  1:59pm
Caryn:

@Nathan: thanks for the effort!
  2:01pm
Nathan:

Tis nothing! Just furtherin' the cause.
  2:02pm
Cecile:

thank you Nathan! I can pass that on to other folks who dont' get TV1.
  2:03pm
Duane:

Good Look Nathan!
Caryn: "Tokyon RUsh" by Hosono is mad funky. Love "Honey Moon" too
  2:08pm
yayson:

ok you win i am happy now.
  2:10pm
Duane:

yayson: It's good for the soul!!
  2:10pm
Caryn:

@Duane: definitely! Also enjoy his "Rose and Beast".
  2:13pm
Mike East:

Yes! Thanks for saving me time, Nathan!
  2:18pm
Hatch:

In my experience the freaks REALLY come out whenever you play anything Zappa-related on the FMU airwaves. Hope you're getting some weird phone calls right now.
  2:19pm
?:

frank . . . frank . . . frank . . . FRANK!
  2:20pm
Caryn:

@Hatch: well, they just supplement the ample amount of freaks already here.
  2:21pm
Kat in Chicago:

Woodwork creaks and...
  2:22pm
Duane:

I got a call, Hatch..ya shoulda warned a bruh! LOL!
  2:24pm
Caryn:

Also, if anyone knows the name of the artist doing this, please let me know, because if there is an album, I want to - nay, I NEED to - get it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA87H-wEFV0
  2:25pm
KevinfromBayRidge:

Freak outta the woodwork checking in!... Tks for the shout out, Hatch
  2:26pm
Nathan:

@Caryn - From the comments on Youtube... Minoru Muraoka + New Dimension ~ Bamboo (1970)
  2:27pm
Caryn:

@Nathan: nope, the downloader (who also downloaded Bamboo) says it's not that. Similar style, but alas no.
  2:27pm
efd:

damn, Duane, I didn't know you played punk on your show!
  2:28pm
yayson:

funk as puck dood
  2:28pm
Cecile:

punk. hahahhahaha
  2:28pm
Nathan:

Damn!
  2:28pm
kata:

this commercial is cracking me up, can't be real!
  2:28pm
Caryn:

@efd: well, we also didn't know Huey Lewis & The News was punk. Or Crowded House.
  2:28pm
Cecile:

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha
  2:28pm
Mike East:

this punk rock stuff is too heavy for me.
  2:29pm
Caryn:

@kata: I put the link up on Ken's playlist.
  2:29pm
Cheri Pi:

Outrageous!!!!!!!!!!!!
  2:29pm
Kat in Chicago:

Warning: contains no actual punk music
  2:29pm
Droll:

I can just hear the mowhawks and leather coming through this ad.
Maybe that's "punked"?
  2:29pm
Rarus Avis:

EGADS~ I'm going to have to throw away all of my old punk albums, 'cause they're obviously not punk enough.
  2:30pm
Caryn:

Damn, Droll beat me to the "punked" line! Seriously, that ad is soooo ridiculous. And it's even worse when you see the bewigged actors.
  2:30pm
Koko from Koko's Boathouse:

smoooooth music.
  2:31pm
Duane:

Crowded House and GG Allin tour was legendary!
  2:31pm
Caryn:

Now I want a WFMU DJ to do a "punk" show consisting of the artists on that collection.
  2:32pm
still b/p:

Remember that insane, all-smashing, social-shake-up John Hughes movie, Pretty in Punk?
  2:32pm
Cecile:

Huey Lewis and Jello Biafra used to golf together*

*total lie.
  2:34pm
Droll:

Caryn, Be careful what you wish for. Surely Duane played the ad because he has the album. Then again, it's been a while since we put on Doc Martens and skanked around the living room to Huey Lewis, could be fun (again).
  2:35pm
Caryn:

And now Duane is kinda doing that dream show... awesome.
  2:35pm
Cecile:

ahahahahahahhaahahahahaahaha

Scott Williams made a loop of this vibe solo. IT was the greatest.
  2:36pm
Kat in Chicago:

I just remembered what this is. Oh noes.
  2:36pm
Caryn:

Oh, Droll, I'm pogoing to Crowded House almost every day. Their rebellious messages and crazy outfits really get my adrenaline going.
Okay, I think I'm having a sarcasm overdose...
  2:38pm
Kat in Chicago:

The worst part is the vocalist's forced chuckle just before the chorus
  2:38pm
Cheri Pi:

this song reminds me of being trapped in the car with a.m. radio and my uncool parents.
  2:38pm
Caryn:

I'm expecting shocked calls from moral guardians about this outrageous filth you're playing, Duane. Breaking taboos and crossing boundaries of decency even today, people!
  2:39pm
PKNY:

I don't care what anyone says, that xylophone solo is punk as fuck.
  2:39pm
Rarus Avis:

@Caryn: Call the FCC!
  2:39pm
Denise in DC:

How scary is it that I immediately recognized the xylophone solo from "Moonlight Feels Right"?
  2:42pm
Caryn:

@Rarus Avis: oh, I'm sure the FCC is already reaming Ken out over this music. This show will never be archived because of the scummy punk element that briefly took over.
  2:43pm
still b/p:

Ha...xylo punk. Bollocks Marimba Band.
That re-work was fun, a perfect candidate. A good production team and emcees could create a great breezy rambling rap number over that music.
  2:43pm
s:

Can someone tell me about a good source of material
  2:44pm
kata:

yeah, bringing the sexy back...
  2:45pm
Puncle:

LVB's Missa Solemnis. That's punk!
  2:46pm
Caryn:

Oh, Duane. Turning off that nice clean Mr. Brown for this trashy singer (the founder of L7, BTW).
  2:46pm
Marmalade Kitty:

you.. yoooou got the tunes!
  2:46pm
Patrick:

is this what they call toilet punk? giving Terry T a run for her money
  2:48pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

There's a Nietzsche joke somewhere in there with the dead horse thing...
  2:49pm
Cecile:

Not that scary, I knew it too, Denise!
  2:51pm
Denise in DC:

No matter how funky the beat may be, Karen Carpenter wrestles it into MOR submission.
  2:52pm
vet:

I got a call about the punky chicken and a dead horse....?
  2:54pm
?:

q: why did the dead chicken cross the road?

a: that's so punk!
  3:04pm
Denise in DC:

I thougoht it was "Why did the punk cross the road?" "He was stapled to the back of a chicken!"
  7:17pm
flo:

taste quality and just great. duaaane!!
