I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

Until recently, Scelsi was rarely performed by anyone. He was reviled in Italy during his lifetime. All of my recordings were done by German or Italian ensembles. It's awesome he's finally getting exposure. Poland has some awesome festivals, Unsound being the foremost off the top of my head (Unsound NYC was awesome this year)>

@northguineahills

You were in Mexico City and you didn't try to find Nancarrow's house?
  2:33pm
Audio Engineer:

@mo: I grew up in southern Michigan, where there was a huge Polish immigrant communit (check "Hamtramck, MI" in wikipedia, for example.)

I went to Catholic grade school with many of them. Poles are cool, but in the 1970s people were still pretty insensitive about ethnic "humor". There's really quite a lot of irony in the descendants of Irish Catholic immigrants from late 1800s looking down on Polish Catholic immigrants from the early 1900s for being supposedly less sophisticated. People are weird.

Audio Engineer:

All patterns are patterns. So any culture fits *somehow* with any other.

But Poland was a Catholic country for much of its history, and the Poland-Italy patterns are therefore fairly closely tied, and closely linked genetically/historically, if we are looking at the ecclesiastical architecture and iconography of Poland and Italy, FWIW.

@opl good one
  2:40pm
northguineahills:

The address where Burroughs shot his wife has an older looking albeit recently refurbished facade leading to a mini outdoor foyer. The building itself (set back about 3 meters from the facade) was obviously built w/in the last 15 years, the facade was done in an early 20th century fashion.

Colon Nancarrow escaped my mind while I was there. I'm definitely looking that up when I go there next (my fiance is from Pachuca, Mexico)
  2:42pm
northguineahills:

FWIW, I was just commenting on Scelsi being performed outside the standard avant-garde circles, and even then, he wouldn't be so standard to begin w/.

Audio Engineer:

@mo: The eastern half of the Roman Empire had Greek as its high-culture/religious language, and the western half had Latin. Poland is the easternmost large country that was converted by the western church.

Within the western church there was a schism in the 1500s called the Reformation or Protestantism, and the northwestern part of western Europe broke away from Rome. Protestant ecclesiastal architecture went to the opposite extreme from the Baroque (plainness vs. busy-ness etc.) that dominated in then still-Catholic countries. Compare a Congregationalist/Purtian or Quaker meting house to a Baroque cathedral (as in Poland or Italy) if the distinction seems unfamiliar.

All of Eureope has commonalities, and pretendinhg there are walls rather than very permeable membranes is an error. But yes, northern Germany and England became Protestant, Spain and Poland and Italy stayed Catholic, and Russia was eastern Orthodox.

The Cold War in the second half of the 1900s was just one of the more recent examples of the old east-west wrestling match between those two old siblings, the eastern and western halves of the Roman empire...
