Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from May 15, 2012 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Listener comments!

  3:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

Bizarro. Alfred Bizarro, to be exactly.

And yes, it sounded weird to me to, but as exact modifies the verb "to be", I think the adverb "exactly" is the proper word to use. Actually.
  3:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

There are several meetings I could refer to as a "one way doomsday trip to nowhere".

Dead Corporate Eyes:

I hope there's more adverb-advice in the comments ahead

@Woo: Seconded!
  3:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: I think that will be the case.
It's great with the WFMU comment boards--normally the advice on adjectives is free, but then the adverbs cost you. That's how they get you.
  3:15pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

dangling participles are where the big $'s at
  3:15pm
Brett W. Thompson:

Enjoying this dancey stuff
  3:16pm

does "cocaine cool" imply pastel-colored blazers and shades?
  3:17pm
BSI:

HEY NOW, son. Put that participle away before somebody calls the authorities.

well split my infinitive, I never!

Matt from Springfield:

Cocaine cool--light pastel blazers, white jeans, HUGE tinted out-of-fashion shades. Think Kids In The Hall character sunglasses.

"Sound After Death": I don't quite see that as a slogan for the homepage, but I can imagine that as the title of a DJ premium.
  3:49pm
Cheri Pi:

Not Fadades! the angriest Frenchman on the interwebs!
  3:50pm
Cheri Pi:

he filmed this entire video sitting on the pot, waving his empty toilet paper blades around shouting at his wife to toss him a roll.

  4:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hello Turnerite Carmichael. (Is that the name of a mineral? Carmichael turnerite...?)
  4:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

You yourself turned me on to QT to play streams, which happens to be the only way I can listen to them at work. But the networks here are very choppy, so I normally just use the Flash player at work. Unless it's GTDS or Ichiban or a stream that doesn't have a Flash option.
  4:22pm
G:

No joke, Matt. Turnerite aka Monazite

Matt from Springfield:

Joy Through Repetition.
It's the 80s prep school kids all over again.
  4:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

At least Scott Williams looped The Stylistics. That's something you WANT to linger over.
  4:36pm
jerry's kids:

at least he's playing the K Hole music now.
  4:38pm
northguineahills:

I actually like the Dead (up through working man's dead), but I wasn't a fan when I saw them in '95. I just went for the circus.
  4:39pm
BSI:

re-playing the fadades video on another tab with the Landerim. It's a whole new layer of awesome.
  4:39pm
Chris from DC:

I'll just never understand the folks who listen to nothing but the Dead. If that's what they want, great, but it makes no sense.

That Landerim is really nice.

kat330:

Ms. Monk! Love her work. I was lucky to sing with a couple of people who worked with her. One degree of separation I suppose.
  4:50pm
northguineahills:

I dig Meredith Monk as well. Cool stuff kat330.
  4:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

Was digging this vocal piece, pleasantly surprised that it's Meredith Monk!
  4:51pm
Brett W. Thompson:

Awesome!!
  4:52pm
kat330:

Hi, BT and all! Been in and out of the FMU loop ever since sending Philo (JT) off to Helsinki on Sunday.
  4:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: According to the Bacon scale, you are 0, people you have met are 1 degree, and people they've met are 2 degrees.
  4:52pm
Mr Donut:

And this is just the warmup!
  4:52pm
Carmichael:

Reading down the list of labels, and suddenly I get to Warner Brothers. Seems way out of place.
  4:53pm
reality show idea:

ted nugent vs. burzum. real life battle in the woods. varg's views are now as offensive at the Nuge's, i think! http://www.burzum.org/eng/news.shtml
  4:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Before major labels had their own "separate", "indie" divisions, they had some outlier acts signed to the main label. Laurie Anderson was also WB, IIRC.
  4:55pm
kat330:

@Matt: I may be 0, but still know Monk had rubbed off on these folks I worked with (Pablo Vela and Larry Gordon, or his GF), and that then rubbed off on me. :)
  4:56pm
Carmichael:

@Matt: So was Bugs Bunny.
@kat: I just saw Tony Bourdain's show from Helsinki last night. Pretty interesting. I hear it's kinda cold there.
  4:56pm
Brett W. Thompson:

Wow, so weird! And delightful
  4:57pm
kat330:

Definitely I'll have to hit the archives for Eno's Seven Deadly Finns. Hm.
  4:57pm
still b/p:

A coworker just said this is the music you hear before you die.
  4:59pm
kat330:

Carm, what was Bourdain doing in Helsinki? JT mentioned his first proper Finn meal was fish stew, but nothing too weird was in it. :) Oh, and JT said it's been warmer and nicer than usual at this time.
  5:01pm
Carmichael:

@kat: Freezing his ass off, getting a sauna, drinking heavily, eating Finnish fare and street fare, etc ...
  5:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

Great vocal art! And..we didn't even have to tune to the Ubu stream to hear it! Thanks Brian!

@kat: The good thing about 2 degrees of separation is, if the person you know didn't wash their hand, the other person really *can* rub off on you! :)
  5:03pm
kat330:

Maybe it was taped from an earlier time? My only visit was with JT at about this same time of year in 2002, and it was really nice weather. He said it was almost that warm on this visit.
  5:04pm
shaun cassidy:

WTF is going on with this station?
  5:04pm
lulu:

this sounds good
  5:05pm
kat330:

All I know is it sure is lonely around here. First time we've been apart for anything beyond about 10 hours total since September 3, 2000. Thank gawd for the Internet.
  5:05pm
shaun cassidy:

"fantasy woman you're a child in disguise"? kinda creepy... perv rock...

@kat: Here's a rec for you and JT: on Julie's show this morning there was a Finnish band she played called Lau Lau. It was a beautiful track, with stringed instruments. I thought it was Asian at first until Julie said it was Finnish. Check out the Archive, it's in the middle of the show:

@lup: comment looping indeed.

this drum circle rules, tho
  5:13pm
kat330:

@Matt: Excellent and thank you! I've spent a portion of today recording some tracks of my own and, in fact, one that was 0-dgrees connected to one of those 2-degree people. Funny that!
Avatar 5:14pm
BT:

Lau Nau, actually not Lau Lau.
  5:15pm
Carmichael:

@kat: I'm sure Bourdain tapes these months in advance. They need lots of time just to delete his cursing rants.
  5:17pm
northguineahills:

I just finished the 5 seasons of No reservations on Netflix. I was hitting 3 episodes a night.
  5:17pm

Ah man Holywood Palladium '71 is one of the best tapes- the Hard to Handle on this one is crazy too
  5:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ah, thanks for that catch, copyeditor BT!
(And I actually typed it right @5 this morning, but not right now! :)
  5:18pm
kat330:

I wonder if the stringed instruments were kanteles? I have one and am determined to use it on some track or other, even if inexpertly done.
  5:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

"I have __ am determined to use it on some track or other, even if inexpertly done."
Um, I think that's the very definition of "pretentious", kat ;)

Yep, me on the kantele and everyone else on the cowbell.
  5:23pm
Lizardner Dave:

Who are those twin ladies in the pic on the home page? Been bugging me for half an hour.
  5:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Really *explore* your studio space, kat. Let the kantele come to you; we'll record the cowbell once you're done."
  5:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

@L.Dave: The pic info just says "Paris"--don't know if that's the movie name, or the location or what.
  5:24pm

@dave in a cave - not the first, likely not the last, but certainly rare!!

@davecave: Jesse (Frow Show) 3-6AM Monday mornings ends his show description with something like "and the Grateful Goddam Dead". Plays them too, even a recent "audience show recording" -- aka ROIO (recording of indeterminate origin), as we show traders jocularly acronymize them. (Often it is very well known exactly who taped a given show, and which speakers they were near or not near to.)
  5:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

Dare I say "Who's there?"
  5:30pm
kat330:

@Matt: Kantele.
  5:31pm
Carmichael:

This song is kickin' my ass. In a good way!
  5:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wooooo! 41% IPA! 82 prooooooof!
  5:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Kantele who?
  5:33pm
kat330:

@Matt: You kantele tune by its cover.
  5:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: D'OHHH!!
(But, at least that's an EFFECTIVE way to show pronunciation on the comment board!)
  5:36pm

Speaking of IPA and proof, it's $2.50 pint day today! I have one leg out the door already.

Clay Pigeon has played several tracks from *genuine* radio station samplers--I'm very tempted to get that WTNG album. Maybe even put it on a cassette and get Clay to play from it! ;D
