Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Thanks for listening to this episode of The Dusty Show. I appreciate your interest in the program and invite you to listen again! If you'd like to contact me, it's easy ... just email - dusty@wfmu.org. I'd love to hear from you.

I have continued to follow Occupy Wall Street through its ups and downs over the past few months. Lately, I have been trying to mix my coverage with music and other topics of interest. It must seem haphazard at times, or unrelated. I'm not sure what to say about that. Dusty is sometimes an animal that creates itself as I go. I hope you'll continue to tune in and I'll keep trying to make it worth your while. Until next time .... take care and ... always remember.

We have a big referendum at the end of this month on an EU financial treaty - both sides.. both sides are resorting to one liners, empty promises, scare mongering.

And it appears to work for the majority of people.

But that level of debate just makes me want to leave the country.

But I think it's reflective of politics in most nations and blah. I don't see a way for things to get better. No room for pragmatism & honesty, only expediency & propaganda on all sides.

@OD: Political spectrum isn't a line, it's a circle. The Nazis and Communists were arch-villains to each other, even though the end results in the countries they controlled were remarkably similar.
  6:27pm
rob:

AHHH robot voice
  6:27pm
other david:

@Matt: last year, and the treaty - well you'll get different answers, but as I see it: we get access to nicer EU borrowing, in return for the EU having the right to slap us for running deficits - sort of like a parent overseeing a kids saving account.

But the debate is being framed as: if we reject it, we're doomed - no-one will lend us money / everything will be better!

If we accept, we'll all have jobs! / If we accept we'll surrender our last vestage of independence!
  6:28pm
Caryn:

I felt pretty good during our presidential election campaigns, because it was all very civilized and reasonable debate about issues (although sometimes annoyingly about issues that the president has nothing to do with). But it was pleasantly decent and factual. After the elections, though, it's all hyperbole and business as usual, disappointingly.

Forget Jon Anderson for a minute. John B. Anderson was a candidate in 1980 who broke ranks with the GOP and ran as Independent. He did what Dr Paul apparently will not. Take real risks. I was inspired back then, as it was my first as a voter, and I took his petition around, the whole thing. Now I think Vermin Supreme is as good as any...

Caryn - I am deeply envious of the Nordic nations :)

My personal take is that our debt is unsustainable - a government official apparently acknowledged that, and said we'll have to seek a 50% write down on our debt in 4 years time - but that's not being debated publicly. Blah rabble rabble!

@Matt: I have come to the opinion that a large number of politicians are borderline sociopaths. They will... wave any flag, so long as it seems to promise personal advancement into the circles of power.

Avatar 6:44pm

  6:44pm
Caryn:

@Matt: oh, I wouldn't say the "civil and reasoned" thing necessarily anymore. One of the biggest parties here is a populist right-wing party, whose members are in the news on a regular basis with preposterous statements e.g. saying that "foreigners, fags and foreign-language speakers should wear identifying armbands" or "be shipped to an island away from normal people" or cheering on a lunatic shooter, because his victims happened to be immigrants. Fortunately, there has also been a counter-reaction to these guys, of which the presidential election was a fine example.
@od: Last week, the Helsinki city council decided to proactively try to prevent OWS from spreading here by banning all groups from erecting tents or stands of any kinds in public spaces. Of course the morons forgot that this is not only an asinine move towards OWS, but also prevents e.g. the scout jamborees from setting up tents and stands, political parties from setting up stands during election campaigns, and charities from setting up stands to feed the homeless.

I post that here because Clay probably would like the music on the CD. Then I realized--they probably didn't mean the punk genre; it's probably an abbreviation for: "Pigeon's Ultimate Newwave Kit"! :)

@Matt: you are most certainly a mensch, a thorougly good bloke :)

@Caryn: I feel that within the next 10 years, there's going to be a fundamental reorganising of our how our societies function - whether that will be for the good or bad, I'm not sure, but at this point I'm leaning towards the latter - it wont end there of course, things will go back and forth, but in my lifetime... I only see the further erosion of civil liberties/rights

@dpcd - Sir, I am a Fundamentalist Loser!
  6:49pm

@Clay: Eh, you can unseal it. I figuratively "ran into Studio A screaming" when you mentioning a sealed Badfinger album--because those actually can be extremely valuable!

I saw a hopeful explanation about the US lunacy of late within an interview with Bill Maher. He suggests the far right/tea party folks are going back to old, presumably resolved issues -- like contraception -- because they realize their numbers are thinning. They're running scared. Gee, I can only hope he's right about the far right.

Matt-
The saddest group are the Clueless managers. They think if they work hard and sacrifice they will get to join the club at the top. Maybe this was true before but it sure as hell isn't now.
Send those kids to private kindergarten, pay a big mortgage, buy health insurance, expect a pension- you must borrow to keep on the treadmill, and you will find out too late how misguided those aspirations are.
The club is small and only a few super aggressive can marry or otherwise enter.
