i think of paul lynde singing the smorgasboard song from his turn voicing templeton the rat in the animated "charlotte's web" movie.

I'm thinking of Jaye P. Morgan pelting Rip Taylor with Underwood Deviled Ham on the set of the Gong Show, while Mike Douglas talks to an off-camera Mrs. Miller.

Its a wonder Gentle Giant are'nt still around - you know doing endless reunion tours like Yes etc.
They were are really great band - nearly every album classic!

Shades of early music here. Love it! Hi, Tony and all! Been listening, too occupied to get to the keyboard until now.
Avatar 1:38pm

Hiya, Great Kat330!
  1:38pm
THUNDERBOLT PERGODA (TP):

likewise loved first 2 or three Jade Warrior and Beggars Opera albums, then gave them up as getting boring!
Avatar 1:40pm
tonyc:

Jade Warrior is another band I've gotten back into. Portland's good for finding that kind of stuff cheap, so I've been doing lots of rebuying.
  1:40pm
northguineahills:

The only Eric Saltzman I have is his "Nude Paper Sermons", which is quite awesome, and sounds nothing like this. Think electronics, wandering madrigals, etc.
  1:42pm
BSI:

Funny. I have that cycle with Van der Graaf Generator. Very wild swings of hot & cold over the course of decades...
  1:42pm
THUNDERBOLT PERGODA (TP):

um, whole stack of reissue lables doing nice jobs on remastering/repackaging British Prog from early 70s, Vertigo swirl, dandelion labels especially.
Avatar 1:43pm
tonyc:

@ northguineahills: Yeah, this one is weird -- sort of a parody of a Broadway show, I guess. Wait for the singing chicken
  1:43pm
kat330:

Hearing that was especially nice since I spent much of the morning (re)working on a 14th c. piece by Machaut. :)
  1:46pm
Pantagruel:

3 Friends/ Gary Green & M. Mortimore & othersG.G. reunion.
  1:47pm
Ricardo Montalban:

There was a great Prog, Ambient Electronic show on the radio here in Portland in the late 70s/early 80s.
A guy called Equinox would play lots of Gentle Giant, Jade Warrior, Gong, plus Eno, etc.
  1:48pm
THUNDERBOLT PERGODA (TP):

Are the Shulman brothers still around?
Avatar 1:50pm

  1:52pm
THUNDERBOLT PERGODA (TP):

Rick,
ever seen Whistle test tv show with Eno and Roxy Music from early 70s, Eno goes mad on the Moog?
Avatar 1:53pm
tonyc:

And coming up next set: lots of '80s post-punk/new wave and such (after the first track, anyhow).
  1:59pm
THUNDERBOLT PERGODA (TP):

Tony,
you must like those Frank Zappa albums with Ruth Underwood on Glockenspiel?
Avatar 2:00pm
tonyc:

I do -- particularly because I also love the marimba and xylophone. (Though my favorite Mothers albums are the early ones, from the '60s)
  2:01pm
THUNDERBOLT PERGODA (TP):

do you like prune juice!
Avatar 2:01pm
tonyc:

I also like Ruth's pre-Zappa (and pre-Underwood) recordings with the Hamilton Face Band.
  2:01pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Ruth was great. I think there's some fairly recent footage of her talking on that Dub ROom Special DVD
Avatar 2:02pm
tonyc:

Big thanks to listener Iker for this Fellini track!!!!
  2:02pm
THUNDERBOLT PERGODA (TP):

don't know Hamilton Face band but thought DuB Room dvd was great
  2:03pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I love the Mothers. Most post-Mothers Zappa is only so-so in my book.
Zappa was my first ever rock concert. I don't remember much of it. This was early 80s Zappa, with big, pro musicians.
  2:06pm
THUNDERBOLT PERGODA (TP):

Some good post Mothers albums - zoot Allures, Broadway the Hard Way, shut up and play your Guitar etc
Avatar 2:07pm
tonyc:

Zappa was way too dismissive of the original Mothers lineup -- they may not have been as technically adept as some of his later players -- but they had loads of personality and imagination. Much, much better than later Zappa, imho.
  2:08pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I do like those early solo LPs like Zoot, Apostrophe, Hot Rats, One Size Fits All, Overnight Sensation, but his late 70s and early 80s stuff is really self-indulgent, IMO.
Avatar 2:08pm
tonyc:

But yes -- there is certainly some good post-Mothers Zappa.
  2:10pm
Michael:

Tony is riight! =) My first concert too was Mothers - 1971 Carnegie Hall. Now I'm dating myself...
  2:10pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Agreed, Tony. He would've been nowhere if not for those guy's talents, humor, creativity. It's sad to see how the ZappaCorp has been treating them.
BTW: Don Preston just released an LP of electronic noodlings from '67 and '75, the former recorded during the Mothers Garrick Theatre stint.
  2:10pm
THUNDERBOLT PERGODA (TP):

thought when he sacked the first Mothers line up - they thought he was joking - only for him to turn round and hire some crack studio jazz and rock musicians
  2:11pm
Seam Crooked Sam:

Bongofury!-Ed Marimba Is back.
  2:13pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Yes TP. Most of those guys are still bitter about that.
Zappa told a story about seeing Duke Ellington begging a promotor for 10 bucks so he could buy a hamburger and supposedly that's why he broke up the Mothers. He thought of the Duke is begging at his age and stature, what was he doing, supporting this band of weirdo musicians?
  2:15pm
THUNDERBOLT PERGODA (TP):

well he did'nt hire the Duke did he?
- Any way I'm going to be Jimmy Carl Black - the Indian of the Group -for Tony's show next week!
  2:15pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Zappa was an interesting, conflicted man. I still think he's awesome. I also liked the story where some other musician ( I don't remember who) asked him how he could afford to have such a plush studio and facility in his house and he replied "I never did cocaine".
  2:17pm
kat330:

Yeah, I also don't see how it follows he'd break up his "weirdos" for a more pro lineup from the Duke begging incident. Couldn't have been more pro than the Duke, so.....?
  2:19pm
THUNDERBOLT PERGODA (TP):

story goes - one time he asked George Clinton if he could borrow Funkadelic Parliament for an album - GC said no way Frank!
Avatar 2:19pm
tonyc:

I'm a big fan of "The Grand Wazoo" -- certainly there's some great post-Mothers Zappa ... don't get me wrong.
  2:22pm
kat330:

To date myself beyond Michael, The Mothers were at a small venue in Louisville in the late '60s. My BF of the time saw him, but I think there was some sort of age minimum and I couldn't go along. Sure a shame I didn't in hindsight.
  2:23pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Dork disclosure: I had a huge early teen crush on Lene Lovich.
How nerdy is that?

Mine was on Lydia Lunch.

Avatar 2:31pm

But, then, I also had a crush on Shelley Hack, so go figure....
  2:31pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Yes, Lydia. For me it was Lydia, Nina Hagen and Lene.
Those three are still my creative female archetypes.
you can take your Lady Gagas. I think she's dull and unoriginal.
  2:32pm

Nina will outlive us all, bless her.
