I need those shoes - the Atlantic is raining down on us right now, can hardly get out of the drive - and they'll also be perfect for the wedding we're going to tomorrow

  10:18am still b/p:

I did both, so I saw the picture, but if you search that address -- http://bit.ly/MhGPei -- instead of entering it in the address field, and then go to the site that the Google search returns...you get some non-vital, non-secret, Wall St. voodoo spells instead of musician imagery. Which dimension do....you...choose?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

Three of the four musicians on that last track:
Booker Little died at 23
Scott LaFaro died at 25
Wynton Kelly Died at 40

i was racking my brain to remember, imho, a good cover is one that makes you forget the original performer
  10:28am listener james from westwood:

i need to see a film set to this ted & dick nash track.
  10:30am Van in DC:

Wow. That was a great first half of this show!

totally wrong, it was the divine miss hepburn, herself from my fair lady, so there are tons of versions i'm sure.. julie andrews, for one
  10:32am annie:

  10:39am annie:

as an aside: i noticed the passing of ray bradbury went largely by the wayside this week..
  10:41am Brian in UK:

Ah yes, I remember it well.

annie Mr Bradburys death did not set the world on fire. Burning Kindles. Very prescient novel.

  10:45am annie:

monica, i mentioned eliza doolittle of My Fair Lady fame. the cover of the song "show me", which doug played.
  10:45am Michael:

hey everyone - yeah, this track is something!
  10:46am Brian in UK:

  10:46am annie:

Izanzaren translates, apparently, as "sunbeams."
  10:59am Matt from Springfield:

Pretty imagery in this music, "sunbeams", pretty word for it too.
By "North African" I assume that most of this is not even Arabic, but Berber and Tamazight and other native languages.
  10:59am Brian in UK:

Matt, we are all witholding homework this week until the Boss instates? a four hour show.
  11:01am Holly in NC:

Doug! There was a SPIDER in my SHOWER!!!!! In my FACE!!!!
What exactly is a yardarm, where is it in relation to the sun in North Carolina RIGHT NOW, & can I have a stiff drink????
  11:03am Holly in NC:

@annie - Mr. Bradbury meant (means) more to me than most people I've actually met.
  11:04am Brian in UK:

Holly, you need to talk to BSI over on Scott's show around 9:18..
  11:04am still b/p:

Enjoyed a Bombino show close to home a couple of months ago, but Tinariwen dates within practical traveling distance keep eluding me due to schedule clashes or sumthin'. Brooklyn next week is the closest upcoming.

Or else, host another tape-only Blast from the Past and bring it into the digital realm.
  11:10am Holly in NC:

@still b/p - I am VERY aware of those Indian spiders - in fact, I warned Doug earlier in the week. Can't start planning spider-proof bunkers too soon!

@Brian in UK - heading over right now

  11:19am Matt from Springfield:

@lewis: Comment boards are here for our socializing convenience and pleasure. Even if you're not listening (or *can't* listen), you're always free to comment, even if listening to another program. Just be honest however, don't claim to be listening if you're not.

  11:24am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: I apologize on behalf of Subaru owners--we're normally much nicer and alert people.
@Van: Do you know Thai? Can you speak it as well?
  11:24am Another old man:

  11:25am northguineahills:

I always wear a helmet (and lights). The helmet saved my life in 2003 when I was going full speed down the Williamsburg bridge and I hit one of the rumble strips that used to be there and my front wheel popped off. My helmet shattered, i lost a lot of skin off my face, and shattered a lot of my teeth. I woke up being carried to an ambulance. w/o the helmet, I would have been a vegetable.
  11:25am ndbob:

heya Annie! .. I just had fried eggs and whole wheat toast - my standard high cholesterol breakfast:)
  11:26am Carmichael:

Happy Friday everyone. Off for some tea. BRB.
  11:26am Matt from Springfield:

The problem with Google Translate is it doesn't work for Romanized Thai, so it's hard to type what you see and expect a translation.

Really Thai "can't" be Romanized anyway, what with 44 consonants and 15 vowels, and five series of tones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

OMG NGH!
  11:27am Van in DC:

@Matt - never was fluent. But had a Thai wife for 8 years and diligently studied it precisely because she didn't WANT me to know what she was saying to her girlfriends right in front of me :) But I've forgotten soooo much. I started being able to read just a bit, like saying, "Oh, they have Pepsi!" in a restaurant in Thailand.
  11:27am annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

@Annie
"Most Excellent Sausage" sound like a great band name.
  11:28am The Authorities:

@Another old man: We monitor playlist looking for troublemakers
  11:29am Matt from Springfield:

@Another old man: Ha ha, nothing sinister about "monitoring", if there's info posted I think should be shared with the board I'm commenting on, I'll cross post a link (much like Brian referred Holly to Scott's board earlier). Someday I might add a comment to the show I'm not listening to, if something is posted that really strikes my fancy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey jk. Who do you have in store for the next Kaminsky Kamoutsky?!
  11:30am northguineahills:

So, Doug, I missed the status of Jessie. How is she?
  11:31am Holly in NC:

@brianinuk: ark hives ! ha! ha!
  11:32am Matt from Springfield:

Sawatdee krap, Van! :)

I went to Thailand almost 2 years ago, first time in Asia. LOVED it! But I just know a bit, and in terms of speaking I just memorize existing phrases because I can't do tonal languages yet. (They say Thai is actually easier than Chinese and other languages, as far as tones go.)
  11:34am jk:

Hey Doug,
Next tuesday I'll have as cohost my friend, musician and producer, Ryan Davies. We'll be around the Jamaica Plain area of Boston for next couple of weeks. I think he'll bring a fair amount of disco and contemporary uk club music, though I can never be sure with these things.
  11:34am Matt from Springfield:

@Van: Do you get this Thai joke?
"New wood doesn't burn, does it not?" ;)
  11:34am Brian in UK:

Thank you Holly. That could have been my wife writing 'bout spiders earlier. Totally irrational and uncontrollable fear. I've learned to live with it. The fear that is!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

@NGH
Doing really well. Thanks. She will be stiff, swollen and achy for a few more months, but nothing beyond that.

Speaking of most excellent sausage, with my vegetarian daughter away on a school trip, Jessie and I had MEAT for dinner last night. Ohmygoditwassogood. I made a nice bolognese sauce. Can't wait for leftover lunch...
  11:35am jk:

thanks for letting me butt in to your comments.
  11:35am Van in DC:

Indeed. My wife's nickname was "Tui" but there are five different ways to pronounce that word, and each means something different. The intonation to say her name correctly was very hard for me. Gosh, the Land of Smiles. I love it, miss it.
  11:36am Van in DC:

@Matt - nope, I don't get that joke
  11:37am Matt from Springfield:

@Van: "Mai mai mai mai mai?" with different a tone each! :)
  11:39am Van in DC:

OHHH. Mai for "no" I know. :)
  11:39am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: If I had a vegetarian family member, I would respect their moral/preferred choice, but I would shift a lot of meals to stir fry--I could cook one pan with meat, another without!
  11:40am duke:

Really like the Sonny Simmons talkover music
  11:40am Holly in NC:

@Brian in UK - Yes, anyone who lives with me has to be understanding of my irrational fear.
But oddly, like Doug, if I have to act brave for a spider-phobic child I can cope. Otherwise - I can't. Just can't.

Apparently I need either a knight in shining armor OR a child. OR a psychiatrist. Any takers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

@Duke Yes, really really great.

@Matt Not when your vegetarian family member is a 12-year-old who demands the same adherence to moral/ethical values. We don't go complete meatless, but honestly, it is easier than being picketed in your own kitchen.

@jk My comments are an open book. Spill your guts.

Everyone be sure to tune in to the next Kaminsky Kamoutsky with Jesse, live here on the stream, Tuesday from 7-9pm.
  11:43am northguineahills:

My gf is a veggie. So, it's rare that I cook w/ meat. I'm an excellent cook w/ all things veggie, barely break the skin w/ meats.
  11:44am Matt from Springfield:

Brer Soul--this is a FMU classic! Is this album considered eccentric for Melvin Van P, or does he normally deliver this eccentric brand of soul?
  11:45am Brian in UK:

Sorry Holly my armours at the cleaners. I do worry that my wife has passed on the spider paranoia to our three daughters. But Hey life goes on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

Is this pretty much straight-ahead stuff from Brother Van Peebles.
  11:45am ndbob:

Glad Jessie is doing OK Doug!..... with company in town, went out for a nice steak this week
  11:46am Van in DC:

Gosh I love vegetarians. Means more bacon for me. bwaa ha ha
  11:46am annie:

i'd be miserable if meat were not part of my diet.. i'd have to be paired with someone who isn't squeamish about a burger now and then.. and some nice scallops which i picked up at the tailgate market this week yum!
  11:47am jk:

thanks Doug!
As someone who converted to vegetarian at 12, I had no idea what I was asking of my parents. It wasn't that easy in arkansas at the time, lots of cheese sandwiches (not really vegetarian, in retrospect)
  11:48am Brian in UK:

Doug, think you have pitched this show perfectly with the photo.
  11:49am Holly in NC:

@Doug! IMNOTHO I make the best bolognese sauce in the world - I'll send you recipe to play with ;-)
@Matt, I'm with you. I very much limit my intake of pasta, rice, potatoes, most beans & all grains so.... (bolognese sauce is wonderful on shredded cabbage, for real) :-)
  11:49am Van in DC:

NOOOOO! I'll Have Another apparently just got injured and is OUT of the Belmont! No triple crown winner again! At least that is what twitter seems to be blowing up about right now... :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

I would love a bolognese recipe, Holly. Thanks! Of course, I won't get a chance to try it until daughter goes to summer camp.

I'll Have Another had one too many, apparently.
  11:51am Carmichael:

Oh BTW, the first sighting of "Show Me" was Julie Andrews (on the stage) in My Fair Lady. Don't know if she actually recorded it 1st.
  11:52am Artie:

The horses they give. And the horses, they take away.

Howdy all. Late today. Archives for me...
  11:53am Hugo:

No veggies in the family, but only one true appreciator of a single malt whisky!
  11:53am ndbob:

hey Artie.. yep no Triple Crown this year

I've corrupted my gf to being a pescatarian. But since I'm lactose intolerant (i still do dairy if I feel the pain is worth it), a lot of our meals are vegan, unless we cook the odd shellfish.
  11:53am Holly in NC:

I am a VERY ethical/moral meat & fish eater so I think I could have a lovely lively debate/discourse with Lincoln ! It'd be fun!

And I ABSOLUTELY respect the eating habits of all my friends, even the utterly pain in the arse vegans. I have 3 friggin grills.
  11:54am Brian in UK:

Rains stopped, wellingtons on, let's walk the dawg.
Enjoy the meat, Doug & Jessie.
Happy weekendings all.
  11:54am annie:

carm, we played that album over and over when we were kids... irma la douce, too(sad to see that elizabeth seal never went further than that performance)... silly me for not remembering that!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

In you, Holly, I've met the grill of my dreams.

Woof woof, Brian.
  11:55am Holly in NC:

@Hugo - now THAT is sad
  11:55am northguineahills:

I feel all carnivores should at least once slaughter an animal they're going to eat at least once. To be fair, I've only slaughtered chickens.
  11:56am annie:

holly, the two tailgate markets i went to here in asheville were rife with locally produced meats and cheeses!! whoo!
  11:56am Spencer:

Woof!
  11:57am Van in DC:

Thanks Doug!

aw, mama, is this really the end?
  11:57am Hugo:

I will never ever give up on seafood of any kind - to go with an exquisite white wine.
  11:58am Matt from Springfield:

@NGH: I've seen deer being prepared, I could probably do that. But I'm an acknowledged hypocrite when it comes to chickens--I love chicken, but could I slaughter one? Chickens are gross, with the feathers, fat and bones, I don't know if I could "process" one for eating.
  11:59am Matt from Springfield:

Wonderful show as always! Thanks Doug!
  11:59am ndbob:

excellent show Doug! I'll catch the part I missed on the archive
  11:59am Van in DC:

@ngh - I have spent time in an actual slaughterhouse and it is grim. But they are so tasty.
  12:00pm listener james from westwood:

this programme hit the spot. loved it!
  12:01pm Holly in NC:

@Van = trying to get my head around not being able to pronounce 1's spouses name - I guess that why (& I just realized this!) *all* the men in my life - from 6th grade Scott on - have had 1 syllable anglo-saxon names! ;-)
