Listener comments!

  5:56pm Holly in NC:

That insanely cool 3-headed guitar could maybe used as a weapon against oversized spiders!

I spent the day making short swords, long swords & a broadsword out of pvc pipe, duct tape & foam, no lie. Sadly, not very effective against scary arachnids. Better for turning 4square games into melees.
  5:58pm kat330:

Hi, Doug and Holly! Busy prepping dinner here, so spotty on the keyboard. Hopefully not getting spots on it either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Doug Schulkind:

If Jesus could be a carpenter, Holly can be a swordmaker.
  5:59pm ndbob:

heya Doug, Kat, Holly, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Doug Schulkind:

We're having a nice creamy butternut squash pasta with pine nuts. What's on your menu, kat330?
  6:03pm Coffee Cola:

Howdy all! excited for some turkish freakout.
  6:03pm Philo Gristle:

Given that kat is in the kitchen (fixing pasta roasted peppers, onions and not yet our fresh tomatoes with grilled chicken), I can talk freely about giant arachnids in the meanwhile without giving her the creeps...
  6:03pm ndbob:

my menu was a Gorton's tilapia dinner
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Howdy ndbob and welcome Philo Gristle! I loves me some roasted peppers. I roasted a batch recently. Yum!
  6:08pm Holly in NC:

Later I'm making chicken (lovingly cared for & raised in local coop/yard & killed by someone I know & trust, tell Lincoln!) in a super masala sauce with cabbage, kale & dandelion greens.
Oh, and ghee & yogurt.. Lots of ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Lincoln killed a chicken for her camp's chicken harvest last summer. Then she came home and became a vegetarian.
  6:12pm kat330:

OK, dinner is served here. Can type as it cools, but still can't be very active here. Listening to these wonderful sounds, I should have fixed something more along Turkish lines than Italian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Sounds like Mr. Bey could have been a cantor.
  6:14pm kat330:

Oh, Bob. :( Sorry about the frozen meal. Having tilapia in fish tacos tomorrow, btw.
  6:15pm kat330:

Mmm, Holly, sounds delish.
  6:16pm kat330:

Actually, these peppers and onions were roasted on the grill along with the chicken, so almost like having kebabs off the skewer. The whole wheat rotini is all that's making it Italian.
  6:17pm ndbob:

Somehow I think I don't eat as healthily as most GTDS listeners:) As long as I watch the carbs I'm OK though
  6:20pm kat330:

Bob, I don't believe that's so. I hear a lot of pizza talk on these comments (and not home-made, whole wheat dough, etc.), and there were those ham potato chips the DJs were scarfing in Barcelona. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Surveys have shown that the average GTDS commenter is more apt to spill the beans about their culinary triumphs while the silent masses out there are having a second Snickers. We're all in this cauldron together.
  6:22pm Philo Gristle:

Bob -- I'd be eating gorton's with ramen noodles if it wasn't for kat. I grew up with finnish 'cuisine,' which is mashed potatoes, meatballs and ramen noodles.
  6:23pm ndbob:

I do eat pizza - thin crust though - a lot less carbs - and only a mini-Snickers here:) - I'm diabetic so that limits me a little - but not a lot
  6:24pm kat330:

Doug, I think you type the truth. And truth further be told, we slide into unhealthy choices from time to time. Finance is often the deciding factor, esp. before the garden produces.
  6:26pm Philo Gristle:

Or Turhan Bey!
  6:26pm ndbob:

sounds yummy btw Philo
  6:27pm kat330:

Nice Italian(?) talkover music for our repast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Doug Schulkind:

An Italian take on a samba beat, yes!
  6:29pm kat330:

Guess there are a "few" Finnish folk there in ND, Bob, so you're familiar with the meat 'n' potatoes cuisine.
  6:29pm Philo Gristle:

A good batch of mashed potatoes with properly made meatballs IS yummy. I wish I knew how my grandfather (who used to be a ship's cook in his youth) made his.... they were fantastic!
  6:30pm Holly in NC:

When one eats low carb out of necessity, ramen noodles become the stuff of dreams. Sad but true! ;-)

To date I've only killed fish & crustaceans, merely born witness to other animal deaths so Lincoln is a step ahead of me. Working on it. Ethical eating is challenging - esp when grains can kill you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

I make pizza for the family every Friday. I get a ball of dough from the local pizzeria and then do the rest. For the first 10 times I was a real grumblebum, struggling with dough mostly. Then I turned a corner and have become a real pizzamakingmotherfucker.
  6:33pm ndbob:

sounds great Doug! In all honesty, I don't even know if my oven works - I just use the stove-top, microwave, and George Foreman grill
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Y'all don't forget. Kaminsky Kamoutsky with Jesse is coming up here on the stream immediately following GTDS. Here is Jesse's playlist page:

bit.ly...
  6:35pm kat330:

That sounds super, Doug! We eat out so rarely that when we do, it's something I can't do better myself in the kitchen. I've purposely steered away from certain dishes for that reason - pizza, sushi, tempura.
  6:37pm Holly in NC:

@Doug - what's your best mfin' sauce/topping combo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Doug Schulkind:

A friend gave us a pizza stone as a gift. Pretty essential when using a conventional oven. Not that I really know, but it gives me confidence.
  6:37pm ndbob:

I rarely eat out - except for breakfast - although I did a lot last week when my friend was in town - good places to eat are few here - though I did have a couple of really good meals that Lincoln would not approve of
  6:39pm kat330:

Bob, I'm still guessing you do a lot better than Philo was doing when we started our cross-continental courtship. I still recall those pathetic photos he sent of himself and a bowl of ramen noodles in front of the computer. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Doug Schulkind:

@Holly
I've been grooving on red peppers, scallions and anchovies lately.

@ndbob
Lincoln was away for a night on a school trip and I made a very unvegetarian pasta bolognese. Holly has promised to send me her recipe using chicken livers.
  6:40pm EL TOPO:

Hi Doug,
enjoyed the Selda track, always thought the Selda reissue on the Finders Keepers label is one of their best releases
  6:42pm kat330:

Can't wait to hear you pronounce the artists and tracks of this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Doug Schulkind:

The band you're hearing now, Derdiyoklar Ikilisi, are the hirsute fellows beautifying today's playlist!
  6:45pm Philo Gristle:

It's curious how much great music there is in every single country, and 99% of it is unavailable to people outside that country. Growing up in Finland we did of course hear a lot of great songs that were translated from worldwide hits, but I don't think it ever worked much the other way around...
  6:45pm Holly in NC:

Oooh! Anchovies OK with Lincoln? I LOVE anchovies.
(hits head) need to remember to get you that recipe!

BTW, GTDS friend Mr. Tear just posted this: Freres Bouchenak 1984 Moroccan proto-Rai 'complete w gnawa qraqabs & bubbly synths' http://goo.gl/Q9JWb good stuff
  6:45pm EL TOPO:

are you going to play anything from - Erkin Koray - Elektronik Türküler?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Greetings EL TOPO! Yes, I rather agree. I cherish that and all Selda recordings.
  6:46pm kat330:

Heh! Philo said they resemble George Harrison and Jerry Garcia. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Doug Schulkind:

@Holly
Anchovies are OK w/Lincoln morally/ethically, but not flavor-wise. She will eat the odd shellfish, which is too bad because I always want her shrimp.
  6:47pm ndbob:

@Doug speaking of Finland, have you ever played anything by Viola Turpeinen on your show ?
  6:47pm kat330:

Then take only the even ones, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Doug Schulkind:

@EL TOPO
I took out an Erkin Koray track at the last minute. From a a collection of rare singles. Now I feel bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
No I haven't. Since Lincoln plays the viola, I better get cracking.
  6:50pm EL TOPO:

I'm sure you played enough good stuff, dont worry about my daft suggestions!
  6:51pm northguineahills:

Been listening. Always love hearing Selda Bagcan.
  6:52pm kat330:

Nice bass & beat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Doug Schulkind:

Good evening NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Only the even ones. You're a genius, kat330.
  6:53pm kat330:

This is more than Okay with me.
  6:54pm kat330:

And so are you, Doug! :)
  6:54pm Paul Sherratt:

Is that a turkey freaking out ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Doug Schulkind:

Brother Paul!
  6:56pm kat330:

That turkey freak sound is familiar from some other poppy song -- Tom Tom Club?
  6:56pm ndbob:

actually Viola was known as the princess of prewar Finnish-American accordion music - there are a couple CDs
  6:58pm kat330:

Hey, Doug, thanks for the dinner entertainment! Istanbul a great hour!
  6:59pm ndbob:

great show Doug!
  7:00pm Philo Gristle:

Hiski Salomaa was an another early Finn who moved to the US and made some ballroom records in the 20-30s. Some of the songs are fantastic, sung in a hybrid Fingelska: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P59U0jFMxxo
  7:00pm Philo Gristle:

Delightful stuff, excellent pronunciation!
  7:00pm ndbob:

Thanks Philo!
  9:27am Van in DC:

Think I'll have turkey for lunch today!
  9:29am Doug Schulkind:

The first song is great, Van, The rest is gravy.
  10:51am Van in DC:

Enjoyed the foray-for-no-good-reason into Turkish delight!
