  12:05pm
Asparagus the Archdruid:

Great track Irene..a long time fav. of mine..
  12:07pm
Siriusly:

So love Robert Wyatt
  12:08pm
Looms:

Beautiful opening, Irene. Hi all!
  12:09pm
Soft Mach.:

R>W> YOU are the Man.
  12:35pm
zoot:

Wonderful to hear Allen Ginsberg. I met him in the early '60's when I was 11. He was really nice to this geeky little kid at summer camp.
  12:40pm
Faye:

Great set Irene!
  12:51pm
kat330:

Oh, this is so lovely...haunting.
  12:55pm
amEdeo:

Glass and Ginsberg go together like Peanut Butter and Beautiful Crazy Math. Thanks for the heads up on the concert!

  12:58pm
kat330:

Weird but Rockmore sounds a bit like a theremin -- so pure.
  1:00pm
kat330:

Or is it a theremin? Irene?
  1:01pm
kat330:

The "Vocalise" made me doubt, but apparently 'twas indeed a theremin. Hm.
  1:01pm
Looms:

What Kat just asked. Whatever the answer, the piece was great.
  1:01pm
Mike East:

@kat330 - I was gonna say more like a musical saw - same effect, though.
  1:02pm
Looms:

musical saw... Don't think so.
  1:05pm
kat330:

I've heard vocalists so pure that with the slightest of manipulation could sound like a theremin -- but certain bits and notes of Rockmore's definitely said theremin. I think.
  1:06pm
Van in DC:

Work derailed me, just getting here today...archives here I come! Hi Irene and listeners.
  1:08pm
Van in DC:

Oh, I missed a rendition of Rachmaninoff's Vocalise! Definitely archive visit for that one!
  1:09pm
kat330:

This is the all-female "vocal" set, I see, with or without lyrics.
  1:12pm
Van in DC:

Well I am a huge Joshua Bell fan, and his "Voice of the Violin" is constantly in my CD player. First song on it? Vocalise :)

kat330:

Thanks, Van.

Irene:

Jeez, Kat, am I that predictable? It just fell together that way without pre-planning. Today's show is kind of seat of the pants, as I didn't have much planning time.
  1:15pm
Van in DC:

Sandy Denny is always most welcome :)
  1:15pm
kat330:

By all means more seat of the pants -- sounding simply lovely!
I should have said "Lyrics Optional." :)
  1:20pm
Van in DC:

Ha! I totally glanced over "My Lagan Love"!! Love Kate Bush's version (was her's the original?)
  1:21pm
Van in DC:

Oh, it's from 1903 so I guess not ha ha
  1:22pm
kat330:

I'll need to hit the archive now to see where the Villa-Lobos aria ended and Vocalise began. I was going to ask does it mention how Sayao is positioning her mouth for the special humming sounds, but now maybe it was already into the Rockmore for that.
  1:28pm
Van in DC:

Wow. For a second there I was wondering if this was a Kate Bush song I somehow missed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Irene:

Clare and The Reasons new album really has some nice nods to Kate's style. They're Playing live here on July 16th.
  1:35pm
kat330:

With A440 gone for now, I thank you for all the classical fixes this afternoon, Irene.
  1:35pm
Flora Fauna:

I love your show Irene!
  1:38pm
12539:

I was going to say, this piece makes me already miss A440 tonight.
  1:39pm
northguineahills:

Debussy to YLT, nice segue!
  1:44pm
Looms:

Agreed. And unpredictable ;)
  1:54pm
Van in DC:

ha ha that was a good Clay description :)
  1:54pm
v k:

YLT - attended concert in Morristown, NJ last Sept - fantastic performance, featuring a memorable and extended version of "Leaving Home"; much to my surprise, however, the theater (in YLT's home state and on a Sat nite) was at maybe 15% capacity; hard to make sense of that
  2:00pm
Flora Fauna:

Noice Kapan stuff. Reminds me of Abercrombie and Frissell
  2:04pm
Van in DC:

Just beautiful
  2:06pm
kat330:

Reminiscent of Mitchell's Hejira.
  2:09pm
Van in DC:

Ah yes....I enjoyed Daniel Bachman live on this show before.

today's show may be seat-of-the-pants, and it is superb, Irene -- thanks so much!!!
  2:27pm
kat330:

Again, Hejira-like bass [Jaco Pastorius]. Loving it!

A little Joni for you!
  2:29pm
kat330:

Heh! Kiitos, kiitos and many thank-yous! :>
  2:29pm
Van in DC:

:)
  2:29pm
Lucy:

Love this Jaco theme weaving through the last few...
  2:29pm
kat330:

[and also thanks for NOT playing "Coyote"]
  2:31pm
Van in DC:

Ya know, that WFMU documentary kickstarter is up to, I think, 86 subliminal messages so far. Am I the only one leery of those...? :)
  2:33pm
kat330:

Anyone include "Hello to Jason Isaacs" there yet, Van?
  2:35pm
nodrog:

beechwoodbeechwood.bandcamp.com

I wanna hear "The Crawl"!!
  2:36pm
Van in DC:

@kat330 - we won't know until the film comes out :)
  2:37pm
kat330:

Ah, yes, I guess that's the point of subliminal. :)
  2:38pm
Van in DC:

When Daniel was on, he had:

Zach Taylor on Shruti box
  2:45pm
Van in DC:

The scary part of those subliminals is that it's the donors who come up with those. Heavens only knows what will be on my mind after watching the film ha ha. And they will be interspersed throughout the film, so it's not like you can just skip over a section.
  2:49pm
Mike East:

Atleast we can be fairly certain that none of the subliminal messages will be advertisements for Pepsi or McDonalds, or something.
  2:51pm
timetraveller:

so hejira just started, is the playlis5 10 mins ahead of the broad/webcast?
  2:51pm
kat330:

Funny if someone puts in a subliminal message for Burl Ives. ;}
  2:52pm
kat330:

TT: That's a mighty slow stream you're drifting on.
  2:52pm
timetraveller:

if so, now I have the added enjoyment of anticipation for caetano!
  2:56pm
kat330:

Thanks for a great listen today! Sorry I'll miss Clay, but at least not your show as I'll also be away next week. Vacate safely and most happily, Irene!
  2:56pm
timetraveller:

20k windows over a glacial WiFi, 14:55:30 hejira ended
  2:59pm
Van in DC:

If I could leave a subliminal for Clay it would be to play Kate Bush next week ha ha.

Great show, many thanks Irene...I get to loop back and listen to the front end I missed, yay!

Enjoy your time off.
  3:02pm
still b/p:

Thought maybe Jim's show was entirely subliminal this week.
  8:35am
Van in DC:

Okay! Time now to catch up on the part I missed.
  10:18am
Van in DC:

What a lovely version of Vocalise that was. Thank you again WFMU archive!
