Listener comments!

  12:05pm
Cecile:

Duane! great start to the show.

Thanks for the Jerry Butler a few weeks back.
  12:06pm
Cecile:

Not a problem Cecile. I hope you had a great anniversary. Did you see Unsung last night?
  12:07pm
Duane:

OMG! How funny. That was from me. not from yourself C:)
  12:07pm
Cecile:

I did! It was wonderful.
Sly is unsung. So unsung. Most young ones just see him as a crazy guy now, but he actually seems pretty sane...
  12:08pm
Cecile:

I figured. lol
  12:08pm
Duane:

Yeah, he's a true OG. He seems extremely rooted
  12:10pm
Cecile:

I was talking to my husband, and I can intellectually appreciate the genius of people who have been called geniuses of soul: Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Prince. But Sly is the one who really speaks to me at a gut level.
  12:10pm
G:

What they do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12:11pm
Daryl Rundgren:

Sly and Marvin
  12:11pm
Cecile:

Yeah, Daryl. That's it. Clinton is up there. but those two...
  12:12pm
Cecile:

I want Tom Moulton to be my spirit animal.
  12:12pm
BSI:

Wait a cotton-pickin' minute, Cecile: you were in upper Michigan same time as us, and now you've stolen our anniversary as well!?!? THIS WILL NOT STAND!
  12:12pm
Duane:

Sly, just may be my favorite soul lyricist of all time. Over Smokey & Stevie even. I concur Cecile
  12:13pm
Cecile:

Really? June 13! LOL! I will bet that I had my anniversary longer 'n' yours...
  12:13pm
Gladys:

Don't forget Aretha.
  12:13pm
Cecile:

and those arrangements. Even on those pre-Sly collections. Ahead of their time.
  12:14pm
Cecile:

Poor Clive Davis looked like he just wanted to break down and cry during the whole thing. He loves Sly, you can tell.
  12:14pm
BSI:

Ah, no. OK, the conspiracy theory fails this time. June 26/yesterday was no.13... whew..
  12:15pm
Cecile:

And I never thought I would use the words "poor Clive Davis" in a sentence.
  12:17pm
Duane:

LOL Cecile. He hasn't been 'Poor Clive Davis" since Sputnik
  12:17pm
Cecile:

ah. But...mine was 31 this year. oooo eeee oooo.
  12:17pm
fred:

@Cecile: I don't even really like soul. But I do like Sly. It's just great songwriting, it's above genre. I guess you know you have a french sounding name? Are you french-canadian?
  12:17pm
G:

Poor Richie Davis!
  12:18pm
Cecile:

but he was so sad, Duane. Losing Whitney may have broken a few cracks in that facade.

My husband is, and I think I have a little from my grandpa. I was named after two Dionne Quint dolls.
  12:18pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Howdy, all. Can't wait to watch the Sly thing, though some of will be painful, I'm sure. I often call him "The Forgotten Genius" because the common view of his music is so myopic and ignorant of the depth & breadth of his career.
  12:19pm
Cecile:

Fred, that's exactly it.
  12:19pm
Cecile:

Jeremy, it is well done. And he seems to be hanging in there in his way.
  12:19pm
Time/Life:

So many young gifted soul artists who departed too soon. Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Donny Hathaway. Tammi Terrell, Minnie Ripperton. What might they have gone on to do?
  12:22pm
fred:

@Cecile: which one is the second doll?
  12:22pm
Cecile:

Marie
  12:23pm
dc pat:

Was Tom Waits on this episode?
  12:24pm
Lamenter:

This SCTV stuff reminds me of how much I miss John Candy. He and Chris Farley. Great fat-guy comics who were so much more than that. RIP
  12:28pm
andymorphic:

when i was a bike courier i hit john candy while i was riding on the sidewalk
  12:29pm
Ghost of John Candy:

So we meet again.
  12:31pm
Yvonne Szymczak:

This "Arizona" song by Chomp is so happy!
  12:31pm
fred:

One thing that drives me crazy: I've heard many people say it would have been better for Sly to die young. That makes my blood boil. I realize it's a common feeling, but it's just dead wrong.
  12:32pm
Yvonne Szymczak:

Can you play thing song 50 more times? Maybe I can do that by myself.
  12:33pm
Yvonne Szymczak:

Oops I meant THIS* not THING*
  12:35pm
Mark Lindsay:

Arizona ... take off your rainbow shades!
  12:36pm
Cecile:

fred, I know.
  12:39pm
Mike East:

@fred - yes, that's a terrible thing to say. The grammy performance a few years ago was not great, but that's not Sly's fault. He was on stage with a bunch of douchebags and his equipment was malfunctioning. Even still - I was really excited to see him.
  12:43pm
Cecile:

me too Mike East.
  12:44pm
Mike East:

only reason to watch the grammys that year or any other as far as I'm concerned.
  12:45pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

So the Boston Globe reported that Lady Gaga's new perfume has blood and semen in it? That source came from Naturalnews.com.
  12:46pm
βrian:

Nice music to code by. Thanks, Duane.
  12:48pm
Stacee Jaxx:

Sly kind of has that George Jones attendance record at his shows.
  12:48pm
fred:

@Mike East and Cecile: Even if he had lost it all musically, he could retire, or become irrelevant. Do we need blood? I don't see what that would add to his music. And by "we" I mean the music nerds.
  12:49pm
Miami Bob Perry:

Thanks Duane for that live 3 degrees. Have to pick it up today. Mo soul than i can control...
  12:50pm
Cecile:

I just ordered it myself, Miami Bob.

Fred, you're preaching to the converted. I'd rather an artist be old, wrinkly and irrelevant than dead before their time.
  12:50pm
Izzy:

Let's talk about Axl Rose. You start.
  12:51pm
duke:

Emperors - thanks for this one Duane.
  12:51pm
Miami Bob Perry:

@Cecile: Funky minds think alike..
  12:52pm
G:

I'm straddlin' the fence on that one.
  12:52pm
Cecile:

the reviews on Amazon are hilarious. Two people were at the actual conference and freaking out intheir reviews. One is all "this doesn't sound like the record."
  12:53pm
Cecile:

So 2 5 star reviews, and 1 1 star review. Sounds about right for things I like.
  12:54pm
Miami Bob Perry:

True dat. It sond better!!
  12:54pm
Cecile:

Uh, Axl. Well, he can be funny sometimes.
  12:54pm
Cecile:

YES.
  12:55pm
Duane:

That live shit's a revelation. Don't beleive em y'all!
  12:55pm
fred:

@cecile: I knew that as soon as I posted it. But I still feel better having said it. It really drives me nuts
  12:55pm
Phann:

Terrence Trent D'Arby is another under-achiever who seems to have (so far, anyway) fallen far short of his original potential.
  12:56pm
Cecile:

I wish Terrence would come back. But that first record has great stuff on it.
  12:56pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Yeah, but TTD's hype was so big no one could live up to it. He was a minor talent at best.
  12:57pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Almost no one talks about Sly's vocals. Brilliant singer.
  12:57pm
Banks:

D'Arby had incredible pipes, though. Not minor league pipes.
  12:57pm
Cecile:

hell, some nimrod on Allmusic said something like "the greatest tragedy in 70s soul was that Curtis Mayfield never made a record as great at Superfly again."
REALLY?
That's the greatest tragedy?!?!?!?!
  12:58pm
dc pat:

I'm walking around the house to the beat of this tune...
  12:58pm
Cecile:

he was a great singer. The songs were derivative, but had a real spark to them.
  12:58pm
Banks:

The tragedy was that lighting rig that fell on him, and Teddy Pendergrass' car wreck.
  12:59pm
Cecile:

Not Donny Hathaway jumping off a ledge, or Billy Stewart getting killed in a car crash or Tami Terrell passing away?

That's right, banks!
  12:59pm
fred:

I haven't heard about him (Terrence Trent D'Arby) in years if not decades. His first record aged pretty well
  1:02pm
Banks:

So, how does Prince figure into all of this? He seems to be an amalgamation of all the above. Yet, like Bowie, at some point he stopped being a vanguard. Or maybe the media just creates the story arc. Who knows. Great show Duane!
  1:03pm
Cecile:

I just put him in the group of people who get the official mainstream mantle of genius in soul/r&b music.
  1:04pm
Greg from Bloomfield:

First time hearing your show—it shan't be my last!
  1:04pm
fred:

@Cecile: so many tragedies, so many voices snuffed out, but so many new ones coming out even now
  1:05pm
Banks:

As long as the muse exists, greatness will occur.
  1:06pm
Cecile:

exactly. but for someone to pinpoint a debatable artistic disappointment as a tragedy, jeez.
  1:08pm
Banks:

As far as Curtis, if he never wrote anything but Move On Up who could complain?
  1:09pm
fred:

@Banks: Prince has done genius stuff, and some crappy stuff too. I got really tired of his act a looong time ago, but a friend was part of his online community -- which he backstabbed -- so I got to hear a lot. He's a really great musician, if anything too shrewd a businessman.
  1:09pm
Cecile:

Exactly, banks. And he did loads of great stuff after that.

Duane, you and Clay might want to consider doing a fundraiser of floaty Cali pop from the 60s. He digs up some gems, too.
  1:10pm
Cecile:

I think you guys would be hilarious together.
  1:12pm
Banks:

Curtis did an impressive take on "We've Only Just Begun" which was quite a brave thing to do in the 70's. I really feel he was one of the greatest ever. Just that prisitine falsetto alone, and those slinky Fender Thinline Tele guitar passages. Damn.
  1:13pm
Cecile:

this sounds like a great Big Star outtake.
  1:14pm
northguineahills:

I like the direction the set is going....
  1:14pm
Duane:

Clay and I discussed that briefly at hoof n mouth. The mic breaks would be pretty amazing:)
  1:15pm
fred:

@Cecile: Bernanke would be hilarious paired with Clay
  1:15pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Got To Find A Way is at least as good as Superfly & CURTIS was a landmark album. Like Isaac Hayes, can't trust the critics when it comes to Mayfield.
  1:15pm
robyn:

some twang on duane. who woulda thunk it! hi everybody.
  1:17pm
Cecile:

I think so, duane. both of you are magpies of 70s and 80s shiny pop things.

Ha, fred.
  1:17pm
Duane:

Robyn: You never know with me:) Hello Robyn *smiles*

DUNDALK, MD - DENNIS DEYOUNG: THE MUSIC OF STYX
  1:18pm
still b/p:

As my soul awakening continues...Went to a DJ Jonathan Toubin Soul Clap event the other night. (His accident and recovery, which I hadn't known about, pretty amazing.) Great music. Did not dance, regrettably. Age range of females was from 21 to about-to-be 22 tomorrow. Music already vintage when they were born.
  1:18pm
Bizarro Cecile:

Me am there!
  1:19pm
fred:

@Duane: make it happen! This would be an amazing show, and yes, leave ample room for extended mic breaks
  1:20pm
Cecile:

I am findind my 15 year old grand-niece is nuts over everything 50s/60s/70s.
  1:21pm
northguineahills:

Holy crap, that was Steve Martin!
  1:22pm
Duane:

northguineahills: Not THAT Steve Martin unfortunately:)
  1:24pm
Cecile:

holy crap, down the hall it smells like someone is having a bonfire of Mrs. Dash and cabbage cores doused in gasoline.
  1:24pm
banks:

Must run. Enjoyed the dialogue. Love to all and keep up the good work, Duane.
  1:24pm
robyn:

i like this pooka. although looking up the band has introduced me to a world of irish faeries i'm not sure i understand. interesting though...
  1:25pm
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle:

What about fairies? Hmm?
  1:26pm
Cecile:

later, banks!
  1:28pm
Wilson:

"..and how are you, Mr. Wilson?" How are you, Mr. Wilson? Who in the encyclopedia wants to know?
  1:30pm
Cecile:

Ruby? was that the record?
  1:32pm
fred:

Cecile, I am in favor of any scheme or plan, no matter how devious, that would bring Clay on the air more often, but doubly so with a co-host.
  1:33pm
Duane:

Pooka's first album was s/t i believe
  1:33pm
Kurt V:

Chillin to the tunes trying to park. Thanks for the good vibrations :-)
  1:34pm
Cecile:

oh, Pooka. I thought you were talking about Sharkboy. I don't even know why I know that fact about them. The husker du board in my brain...
  1:36pm
Duane:

Sharkboy! Sorry Cecile. The first album was called "Matinee" just googled it. Great stuff!
  1:37pm
Cecile:

I just remember this very striking photo of SB in Alternative Press from a milllion years ago.
  1:40pm
Duane:

Cecile: Yeah the lead singer was like a beautiiful 6 foot tall brunette. Really great live performer. Saw them at CMJ back in '94
  1:41pm
Cecile:

yeah, they talked about that a lot in the blurb. A lot.
  1:44pm
Cecile:

wow, this is hilarious.
who was behind this?
  1:44pm
Duane:

Cecile: HAHAHA! Sounds very Alt. Press.
  1:45pm
Duane:

Mr Master or Ultimate Warlord? They're both amazingly hilarious
  1:45pm
Cecile:

Either and both.
  1:46pm
Cecile:

man, I like Justice, but if they were this funny I would be an insane fan.
  1:46pm
Duane:

Warlord:French candadien
Mr. Master: Italo
  1:47pm
Cecile:

hahahahahahaha
hotbeds of excellent trasho-disco
  1:49pm
Caryn:

Yay, crashed flash is back again and I can hear Duane!
  1:50pm
Duane:

Hello Caryn! Glad to have you:)
  1:52pm
steve:

is there any explanation for the italo space cheese that came from canada in the 80s?
  1:53pm
Duane:

steve: Uhh..They're french AND Canadian!!
  1:53pm
steve:

dam... good answer!
  1:54pm
Cecile:

At least they didn't bring forth the nightmrae that is Prozzak. That's all Anglo-Canada's fault.
  2:00pm
Cecile:

well, off to a meeting.
later.
hello x-cops!
  2:04pm
Cecile:

  2:23pm
Faye:

Oh my I love this
  2:24pm
Cecile:

OH, man, great cover.
  2:25pm
Jeremy Shatan:

Yes, well done. It's almost a cover of Radiohead covering Neil.
  2:26pm
Denise in DC:

Just tuning in. What Sly thing should I be tracking down and watching?
  2:27pm
Cecile:

Unsung on TV1. You can also watch it at their website or on YouTube.
  2:27pm
Cecile:

Denise, Sly's on camera for about 1/4 of the show. It's amazing.
  2:32pm

  2:47pm

  2:52pm

  2:53pm

  2:56pm

Is this a karaoke track for When Will I See You Again?
  2:56pm
Wall Clock:

When will I see you again? Ken's answer is hopefully next week at high noon sharp.
  2:56pm
Cecile:

I bet. where can I find it? Isn't that flydaddy label long out of business?
  2:56pm
Duane:

johnnykevlar: Oh God!! I guess I love Us Psych pop that's trying to sound like Uk Psych the best:)
  2:58pm
