  10:06am kat330:

Doug, is there an errant "i" in Richard's surname?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Doug Schulkind:

@Paul Sherratt
Thanks for the photo detective work!

@kat330
I noticed an influx of Spanish-language discs in the WFMU new bin. Oddities from Peru and Colombia amongst other things. The new bin is a huge influence on WFMU's general programming. I actually have always felt it was TOO MUCH an influence. Many years ago, I conceived and implemented at WFMU an OLD BIN — a place to pull out old gems from the library and give them new prominence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

I mispronounced Felciano's name as "Feliciano." When I looked at my notes, I figured I made a typo and self-corrected incorrectly. Whoops! Apologies to Mr. Felciano (who I bet gets that all the time.)
  10:10am kat330:

Good on ya for that, and though I'm still too new to the overall programming to make that claim, I've also noted a bias to the new.
Ah, then good on that non-typo, too! :)
  10:12am Michael Pollak:

Loving Glossalalia. Any cool anecdotes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

At most stations, a "bias to the new" (as you wonderfully put it, kat330) would result in an emphasis on newly recorded sounds. At WFMU at least, the "new" includes all records that are new to the library, which includes old records in the mix. Still though, in it's way, the new bin is kind of a commercial product placement in the middle of WFMU. Labels get prominent placement for their "product" in return for sending it in for free.
  10:14am northguineahills:

Well, this is a different drummer. Would love to hear the Lou Harrison side.
  10:14am duke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

bit.ly...
  10:15am Paul Sherratt:

Given only one choice I would select 'The Old Bin', everytime.
  10:15am Parq:

I had long felt that there was too little Hispanic music in the FMU mix. As I rejoiced when country music made its big FMU come-on in the late 80s, so am I rejoicing to hear so much Spanish nowadays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

@NGH
The Lou Harrison tracks (there are two in addition to the one from Felciano) are lovely gamelan-tinged numbers. One, "In Celebration of Golden Rain," is particularly enchanting.
  10:16am kat330:

Finland in the house, yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

@Parq
The (re)discovery of the chicha scene in Peru has been a big part of the move to scour the Latin American music universe, new and old.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
Nice catch on the Finnish connection. Then again, you are an expert.
  10:19am kat330:

Say, thanks for the link, Duke!
  10:19am Michael Pollak:

Thanks for the glossalalia URL. BTW, I'm running into odd problems with your comments column -- the right side cuts off instead of wrapping unless I expand to the entire screen -- which then seems to stumble over itself when my comment gets checked. Is it a known problem with a known fix? My browser is Safari, on an Apple running Lion. If not, I can deal, just curious if there is a better way.
  10:21am Michael Pollak:

IGNORE LAST COMMENT. I finally got the knack for gently grabbing the left edge and expanding it that way. Didn't seem like an option before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

@Michael
I am having the same wrapping issue with the comments. And I am using Safari, too. Not sure what the deal is. My guess is, quitting and restarting Safari might work. I am too chicken to do it in the middle of the show.
  10:23am northguineahills:

I have the same problem w/ Chrome. It just started this week.
  10:23am Van in DC:

Literally "New Track"?
  10:24am Van in DC:

yep, guess so :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

I just looked under the hood of the playlist page and its comments function, and everything looks nornal and unchanged. Maybe the alien invasion has begun?

@Van
Yup, literally!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

At list it was new in '82.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

This Andromeda Mega Express is piping in record surface noise, just for fun. I LOVE the sound of scratchy records on digital sources.
  10:28am kat330:

This AMEX Orchestra, as I've dubbed it, is a fave play of Irwin in recent weeks.
  10:30am Brian in UK:

No problem on Scott's comments column. Nyah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
I sent Irwin this record after discovering that one of the tracks sounded a lot like Raymond Scott (whose estate Irwin represents).
  10:32am kat330:

Well, I'm not having a comments column problem, and my PC + Firefox seems prone to problems others never have. Shows to go ya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Maybe Scott's listeners aren't as long-winded as those gathered here. (The more wind, the better methinks.)
  10:32am Van in DC:

Sounds like a caseette tape being pressed over and over...? :)
  10:34am joe:

I love the photo of Andromeda Mega Express Orch on their website of them in the empty pool playing.

  10:40am kat330:

Bye, Rich! [And I'm too cheap for a smarty phone]
  10:41am Brian in UK:

That thought did cross my mind, Doug but being Ingerlish one would never be so crude as to mention it like what I just did. Oh bugger. That must be the Irish bit coming out.

  10:51am holland oats:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

Found this: bo.st...

"The scene was fleeting, barely more than a minute, but it lingered long after the film ended. In “No Direction Home,” Martin Scorsese’s 2005 documentary about Bob Dylan’s journey, Appalachian folk musician John Jacob Niles is seen in archival footage performing presumably in the 1950s. Dylan recalls hearing Niles’s music early in his life, and it’s hard to imagine you ever forget Niles’s voice. He sang in an operatic falsetto, acting out the various perspectives, both male and female, of the traditional ballads he wrote and collected as a storyteller. He was the embodiment of the Old Weird America before that term even existed. “The Boone-Tolliver Recordings” is as good as any place to start in Niles’s slim discography. Released on L.M. Duplication, a small label founded by Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost of the band A Hawk and a Hacksaw, the album compiles the two EPs Niles recorded at home in the ’50s, accompanying himself simply on dulcimer. In their stark intimacy, the songs — just Niles’s voice — impart the same sensation: They transcend time and place."
  10:51am Brian in UK:

When will that dumb Matty ever learn?
  10:54am duke:

I had only heard Fairport Convention's version of this. I'm going to track down more Niles.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

  10:58am kat330:

Backing up: Doug, if you ever want backup beep sounds, I've no shortage in my neighborhood. I'll send them along with our morning rain.

And regarding Mattie Groves: I learned the Joan Baez version -- ALL the many verses -- around the same time I committed Dylan's first several albums to memory. It was so nice to have a sponge-mind in my youth.

  11:38am kat330:

@Paul: Just searched up the McPeake Family to find out Rod Stewart covered WMT, too?? Yikes, he's another hands-on-ears artist for me, heh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

Seeya, holland oats! I hope you stay strong in your weekend condition.

@kat330
I love old Roddy. "You Wear It Well" is a personal all-timer for me.
  11:40am kat330:

None of the other track titles ring a bell -- maybe "Cock Robin"? -- though probably I'd recognize (recognise for you ;) "The Derry Hornpipe" and "Juanita" if it's the well-known one.
  11:42am Kenzo (lastever):

Clearly I need to auto-shrink URL's in the future...
  11:42am kat330:

Oooh, ooooh, I've now GOT to hear the Mark Knopfler cover of Wild Mountain Thyme!
  11:43am Paul Sherratt:

kat,
I'm sure Rod once had a career boost with a spin on GTDS ..
  11:43am Kenzo (lastever):

(Super-long URL's are sending the column into ultra-wide scroll mode in most browsers.)
  11:44am duke:

@kat330 I really liked Ol' Rod's first couple of solo albums, especially Gasoline Alley. I was recently in the car with my mother-in-law and she put in a Rod CD with him singing standards. I almost had to jump out of the car. His recent stuff is definitely hands over ears.
  11:44am kat330:

@Paul: Heh! And here's the Knopfler: http://bit.ly/MD3uAy
  11:46am kat330:

Oops, Kenzo -- I'm very guilty of posting the long URLs, though my browser (Firefox on Windows Vista) is not having the problem
  11:46am listener james from westwood:

no conference calls made for a very lovely trip thru drummerland. tho' i did have to admit building maintenance for a look at the loo. didn't stop the music!
  11:47am Paul Sherratt:

kat, ' Juanita ' is an instrumental on that album.
  11:47am kat330:

@Doug: I've held this Rod the Mod convo before on FMU. It's not just the sore-throat inducing vocals, it's something to do with the personality he projects. Different strokes, as the saying goes.
  11:49am Paul Sherratt:

Sorry Kenzo ! How do you shorten 'em ?
  11:49am kat330:

That last should have been for duke -- but Doug, too.
  11:50am Van in DC:

I also have no URL issues Mr. Kenzo. (Firefox on Win 7)
  11:55am kat330:

Van, I think I mistyped above. I also have Windows 7, not Vista. Must be some connection between Win 7, Firefox and moving a lot. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

Ha!! I shortened all the URL and now no wrapping problem. Kenzo is a genius (but we knew that). Thanks Kenzo.
  11:55am joe:

I love this Witch I'm going to have to track more down.
  11:55am kat330:

Sir Douglas, thanks for a mighty fine audio pathway to the weekend! On the flip, after victuals!
  11:57am duke:

Another fine show. Thanks Mr. Drummer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

Paul, go to a URL shortener page (Google it) like Tinyurl or Bitly. You cut and paste in the long URL and it feeds you a shortened version. Works like charm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

THANKS for hanging with me gang! Stay tuned for Steinski:

bit.ly...
  11:59am Van in DC:

Thanks Doug! Happy weekend to everyone!
  12:01pm Paul Sherratt:

Was thinking about Ebo Taylor this only am - to include him on a Ghana tunes tape for an eighty something chap I met yesterday who'd spent a few years in Accra as a banker. What does the team think ? !
  12:01pm listener james from westwood:

always fun going over the falls in a drum!
  12:02pm Paul Sherratt:

Thanks Doug, for the the show and the shortening ..
  12:03pm joe:

  12:04pm Ricardo Montalban:
