Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

It's a Clay Day!
Avatar 12:06pm
Clay:

Here! Filling in for Irene. Busy cueing records. I'll be reading your comments if you have 'em. Thanks!
  12:07pm
Ike:

I was wondering how long I'd last. And I made it... (drumbeat drumbeat drumbeat) less than 30 seconds before it became so excruciating that I had to switch away! I switched to a station playing the Payola$: "Eyes of a Stranger" from 1982. Ever heard of that one?
  12:10pm
r i s k y:

GO CLAY PIGEON!!!
  12:11pm
Sean in Bristol, UK:

Hi Clay,
Greetings from sunny Fishponds
  12:11pm
Ike:

I came back though. I like this sorta-EZ instrumental track.
  12:17pm
amEdeo:

Weeeheehee. Clay makes the day feel good.
Despite any problematic internet problems at work.
  12:17pm
Juan Rapido:

If you are going there, why not play Nektar?
  12:18pm
SmokinJ:

Let's get to Rockin' CP ! ;-)>
  12:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yaaaaaaaayyyyy Claaaaaaaaayyyyyy!!!
  12:21pm
paula pc:

@ ike -- clay is amazing...and yes I love that Payola$' track too
  12:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Plenty of free-jazz "noodlin' guitar" here!
  12:22pm
kat330:

Hi, Clay! Hi, folks! Present, but away from keyboard much of today. Listening intently though!
  12:23pm
Danne D:

Wonder if we'll hear some Nektar in honor of Sherman Hemsley :)
  12:23pm
kat330:

Oh, and Happy Mars Landing Day, Curiosity!
  12:24pm
amEdeo:

@kat330: Yes!
I Am Curious (Mars).
  12:25pm
kat330:

Mary Poppins is alive, cloned several times over, and flying into stadiums in London.
  12:26pm
kat330:

Yeah, (Mars) rock me, amEdeo!
  12:27pm
KevinfromBayRidge:

Hey Clay, Ain't no dust on this show!
  12:29pm
sfrances:

Just tuned in: what an awesome surprise while I unpack boxes of books in the new rental home we moved into! Hooray! Happiness!
  12:30pm
Mike East:

Having a baby shower next week and my wife requested lots of Sinatra on the playlist. I'm reaching out to friends and family for CD's. As much as I've heard, I own a total of about 2 songs.
  12:31pm
kat330:

Comparing NASA with crop circles?! That's a first for me. :)
  12:31pm
Wow:

UK!
  12:32pm
Danne D:

:) UK :)
  12:33pm
Danne D:

:( my connection had to suddenly crap out twice - I missed the dedication :(
  12:33pm
Droll:

I saw UK on tour (w/Bozzio) about two months ago, they still sound remarkable. Of course, I still have to report this incident to the Prog Police.
  12:33pm
kat330:

@ME: No Frank CDs, and I don't believe I have vinyl any longer either. Probably have a few stray tracks in iTunes or on cassette, like "Strangers in the Night."
  12:34pm
still b/p:

Mike -- I hope you stay away from the late duets. Think of the baby.
  12:34pm
Will-X:

Clay--what's your stance on The Boyzz "Too Wild To Tame"?
  12:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Droll: Did you see Clay at that concert? :)
  12:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi frances!
Good thing you made it in time for this 3-hour Clay!
  12:39pm
Danne D:

I can't imagine ever co-hosting a show on WFMU. But if I did toward the top of the list would be an "A to Z of Prog Rock" special with Clay :)
  12:40pm
sfrances:

@Matt & Dusty: After the past 8 days I've had + missing the show Thurs: I can not express how happy I am right now to hear Dusty spin. I even enjoy the prog! Hope y'all up in the NY area aren't having too tough of a time w/storms, already heard of outages.
  12:41pm
Rush to Judgment:

I like my politics progressive, not my rock.
  12:43pm
paula pc:

happy to hear the record popping
  12:44pm
Mike East:

I wonder how this will line up with the new Wizard of Oz movie
  12:44pm
Droll:

UK, ancient pre-Power-Ballad Journey, and now Pink Floyd? If any Yes or ELP gets spun I'm sure the Prog Police will raid the station. Sounds like a very dangerous situation in the booth right now...
  12:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Surely you could (nay, should) at least be a "panelist" or "guest" on an FMU show someday! :)
  12:46pm
Prog Police:

We are massing on Montgomery St. at this very moment.
  12:46pm
paula pc:

now I'm at the roller rink
  12:47pm
Mike East:

play yyz!
  12:47pm
Van in DC:

Hi there.
  12:48pm
Rush to Judgment:

Sorry you got my pun and, YES, turned it back on me!
  12:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

Love Dark Side of the Moon!

Having enjoyed "The Wall" tour IMMENSELY, I was pleased to read this in a Hong Kong protest:
http://tinyurl.com/cuum9es
  12:48pm
Ike:

I can never take Rush seriously -- I always end up nearly rolling on the floor laughing when I hear these vocals. :)
  12:48pm
Danne D:

lol Matt, I always think that I'll end up accidentally being an emcee on a marathon shift :) but I dunno man as a guest (or caller) I think I make a pretty good comment board person
  12:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Protesters on Sunday decried this as brainwashing. Placards borrowed lyrics from “Another Brick in the Wall,” a song by the British rock group Pink Floyd: “We don’t need no thought control. Leave them kids alone.” "
  12:49pm
Van in DC:

Gosh I miss Irene :)
  12:49pm
Ken of Brooklyn:

E P I C !!!
  12:49pm
Danne D:

UVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV SALESMEN!!
  12:49pm
Mike Sin:

Working at home today... Nice surprise to hear you Clay... You should only play tracks from LPs that were housed in awesome gatefold sleeves with freaky artwork on the inside! Bring on the space rock! Ha!
  12:49pm
Droll:

. o O ( WFMU may be going off the air any minute now. I say the prog rock set was worth it, even though I didn't hear a single Mellotron or flute solo there was plenty of 7/8 time )
  12:51pm
Danne D:

@MikeSin have to wonder if something off Yessongs will be forthcoming after your comment. Perhaps Siberian Khatru.

Yes also oddly falls into the category of bands that are better live than their studio versions which is amazing given their technical proficiency.
  12:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

Nice surprise to see you Mike Sin!
  12:52pm
Danne D:

Today it's the AccuProgList :)
  12:52pm
Van in DC:

As Irene's adopter this year, don't take my I miss Irene comment out of context. At least, not entirely :)
  12:53pm
kat330:

I'm getting dizzy on this pendulum swing. ;)
  12:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

Our greatness has been trumpeted!
  12:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, "The Incomparable Hildegarde"!
Thought this was Doris Day, sounds like her.
  12:57pm
kat330:

"England swings like a pendulum do..."
  12:57pm
The Rapper With No Name:

Clay Pigeon! Steady Reppin!
  12:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Eastern Mennonite University song!
(I remember that from CC3, since EMU's in Harrisonburg, VA)
  12:59pm
Mike Sin:

Hi Danne! Hi Matt from Springfield!
  12:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Roger Miller, one that Clay's also played a lot!
  1:00pm
Danne D:

Hiya Mike :)
  1:01pm
kat330:

@Matt: I have an idea what EMU's mascot might be. :)
  1:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

Clay, that's at the wrong speed! Change it from 33 to 45! :)
  1:01pm
efd:

Wow, that Dale Bacon song was sizzling! Tried to Google him, and all I found was... another Clay Pigeon playlist.
  1:02pm
Daniel:

I, for one, heartily welcome our new prog overlord!
  1:02pm
Danne D:

@Mike Great Job APing Terre's show this week :)

That Midnite Snaxxx song from her set reminded me a little of Geddy Lee actually :)
  1:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Mike!

(Say, I have a question relating to your show...what's that instrumental you have as your bed music?)
  1:02pm
Danne D:

lol @efd - that is quite the norm in the ClaySpace
  1:05pm
kat330:

Ah, Nesmith, my fave Monkee.
  1:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yes Clay, I was about to say Oak Creek is where the shooting happened. Did you used to live there?
  1:13pm
efd:

As I recall, this was the last single Elvis released before his death. I always liked the baritone "way on down" part.
  1:13pm
kat330:

EP sounds very tame on this track -- like he's sub-dude.
  1:14pm
seang:

oh yeah
  1:15pm
Sean in Bristol, UK:

Nice one, Clay, you can't beat a bit of Cliff
  1:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

Cliff Richard--deep into the 70s/80s A/C phase at this point..
  1:16pm
Never Kissed Her:

Clay, you've got me stuck in pre-pubescent melancholia!
  1:16pm
The Young Ones finale:

CLIFF!!
  1:16pm
dale:

had to log on and say hey clay! my tootsie wootsie and i are listening over the radiola.
  1:18pm
the glowing one:

awww, CP you're a great DJ!
  1:19pm
efd:

Aw geez, thanks for making me blush at work. :) And the glowing one is 100% correct.
  1:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

Boz Scaggs--grew up with Steve Miller, played on some of his records.
Real name William Royce, IIRC.
  1:21pm
kat330:

@Matt: Believe he took a Dickens' character's name?
  1:21pm
Sean in Bristol, UK:

Hey Clay,
Got to head back to work, great, great music, I will catch up with the rest of your show via your podcast.
  1:22pm
Mike Sin:

The "Down Two Then Left"-era Bozz Scaggs reminds me (sort of) if Van Morrison had decided to devoted his career in the '70s to hitting AM radio with a heavy hand.
  1:22pm
BenG:

I admit that I listened to this stuff back then on vinyl. I'm curious about the post-vinyl generation. Comments?
  1:24pm
sfrances:

@Clay: next time you play the ever mighty Cheap Trick: I challenge you to pull Hot Love or Daddy Should've Stayed in High School from their debut lp.;) Perhaps still my fave of theirs.
  1:25pm
Van in DC:

Ha. One of my first concerts back in oh, 80 or so? Cheap Trick. Wow.
  1:25pm
WRECKEDUMB:

had this on 8 track. wish i still did
  1:25pm
dale:

sounds like jeff lynne produced this
  1:26pm
Ken of Brooklyn:

Love this ELO inspired CT period, thkxxx
  1:26pm
WRECKEDUMB:

@dale
Jeff Lynne produced the new Joe Walsh
  1:26pm
kat330:

[Correcting myself: Boz Scaggs was a Dickens pseudonym, not character.]
  1:28pm
Mike Sin:

(@Matt from Springfield -- http://youtu.be/UeXfP_BtLT0 )
  1:29pm
efd:

'Voices' was a Hall & Oates LP from around the same time as the Cheap Trick song "Voices" - maybe that's why you make that connection?
  1:30pm
Van in DC:

Connections?

http://labs.echonest.com/SixDegrees/
  1:30pm
sfrances:

@Clay: I have a very, very, very selfish request: could you wish me happy birthday on air? it was on the 3rd & wrecked with carpet installers. =( + missing your show on the 2nd. It would a treasure to me! & many mercies in advance if you do~~~!
  1:31pm
kat330:

Alan Sherman! Now THIS takes me back to my prebuscent melancholia. :)
  1:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Uggh, Alan Sherman has released some good ones, but I can't stand when he rambles along to public-domain tunes!
  1:33pm
kat330:

Right, Matt, not a mensch. A kvetch, kvetch, kvetch.
  1:33pm
Danne D:

lol Matt, I'm feeling you on this one
  1:34pm
paula pc:

i thought I was the ONLY person who owned this Cherry People record!!!
  1:34pm
dale:

i hope you have some more paul williams on tap clay...
  1:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Mike!
(At first listen I thought it was "Holly Holy", then couldn't figure out what--that's why, Italian song! Like that album cover...)
  1:36pm
seang:

that Cheap Trick tune kinda reminded me of Gene Simmons's "See you tonite"
  1:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: "Kvetch" is it!
@Danne: There was an "original" Sherman tune that someone recently played here, was pretty good. But yeah, he had some grating ones!!
  1:36pm
sfrances:

Yes, Punky was in Angel, I saw them open for Styx =O
  1:37pm
kat330:

Maybe it (your animation) is from being locked out of the studio and refused entry by fxo?
  1:37pm
yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Israel,Earth,Milky Way):

It was called Beatles For Sale

@Clay: You sure give appreciation to a lot of under-appreciated albums! :)
  1:40pm
Roberto:

Ah, inspired by the Memory Motel, located in Montauk, where I will soon be going for my yearly retreat! Yee-ha!
  1:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

Oh! Speaking of which...I ordered a copy of the Four Seasons "Genuine Imitation Life Gazette"! I love that album! GREAT cover/sleeve artwork to boot!

I would rec to anyone who like the Beach Boys "Smile" album, it's in that sort of vein.

  1:56pm
Danne D:

  1:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, Clay doesn't like the "Wrecked Dumb" moniker! That's the peril of mentioning him out loud! :)
  1:57pm

@Clay Oblivians too. Hasil Adkins played my house once and used Jody Big Star Stephens drum kit. He was too drunk to hit his cymbals with his hands so he used the headstock of his guitar.

Greetings, Kitty!
Clay *is* the High Priest of Judas around WFMU.
  2:09pm
kat330:

@MM: Spent a couple different very good times in your fair (Sun) city! Last time looked up the final shotgun house Jeff Buckley supposedly lived in (cf: Dream Brother). That was my Graceland equivalent.

Danne D:

did I marginfuck things with my fixx comment before? If so Clay can happily take it down. (The redskiesatnight) one
  2:29pm
kat330:

Yes, Danne, I closed Firefox to try to fix it, but not FIXXed. :)
  2:29pm
seang:

I think you did Danne D! :)
  2:30pm
paula pc:

NOOOO
  2:30pm
Roberto:

kenzo, you need to set the comments to marginfuck:0 in your css
  2:31pm
Danne D:

:( please delete that one then Clay :(

As for this song, I remember what Rolling Stone (I think) so artfully stated about it: Every Thorn has it's prick.
  2:31pm
MenfussMike:

i remember the very first time i saw the first Poison album. Was in Sound Wharehouse with a friend. I looked at the cover, took a second glance. Took the album up to my friend and I go, "Hey man, aren't they hot?" and he is like "Yeah!!!" and I'm like, "They are guys."
  2:31pm
Danne D:

ugh :( I should know better

But when the Fixx gets played all bets are off ;)
  2:31pm
kat330:

Another interesting FMU dingus: We stream through our Squeezebox and also iTunes sometimes. We'll alternate between them because one is usually significantly ahead of the other -- IOW, a stream will get behind while it's in use. When they're nearly in synch, it can be a cool echo around the house.
  2:32pm
popo:

is this a farewell set? FMU might change the locks
  2:32pm
MenfussMike:

Britney Fox were better

Marmalade kitty:

my comments haven't been right for days now :(

When there is a new comment posted, the comment box jumps, automatically scrolls to the top of the page.
I have to refresh manually to see latest comments, and when a new comment is posted, the cursor jumps from the typing box....mnah mnah mnah!!!! ???
  2:34pm
Robb from Fort Lee:

Clay am I hearing your voice on a Monday?? Whoooo!
  2:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

I believe you said the "New Age" bed is "Wind, Water and Stone" from '86--I like this very much, kind of reminds me of "Poetry Man".
  2:35pm
Martian Boy:

Mars rocks! Red skies!
  2:35pm
Danne D:

One plus with marginfucking - when I go crazy
with a long paragraph most of it is rendered
unreadable ;o)
  2:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

Well, I suppose Clay would then be the "Improv Poetry Man"! :D
  2:36pm
Danne D:

@MK are you doing this on your phone?
I know mine had issues with that.
I'm getting reacquainted with the enter key.
  2:36pm
kat330:

LOVE this song! Thanks, Clay!
  2:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

@MK: My comments were "corrected" by last Wednesday or so--things were going well, and then SATURDAY! I started to get the same probs again. Have to manually refresh this list too.
  2:38pm
kat330:

I'm still having a margin problem and, strangely enough, I did not have it last Friday on GTDS when many others DID have an issue. Guess it's spread like a virus to Win 7+Firefox. Heads up Van in DC if you're there!

  2:42pm

  2:43pm
seang:

need to wrap this text
  2:43pm
kat330:

@geokopp: Oh, wow, what a great line up! My best experience along those lines was at a Brown Spring Weekend (ca. 1970): John Sebastian, Tom Paxton and Pentangle Fri. night; James Taylor, Delaney & Bonnie, Seatrain, John Mayall & Ray Charles throught Sat. day/night; Judy Collins on Sun. I believe it was $20 for all three days.
  2:43pm
It's Not Just You:

We're ALL having margin problems at the moment because someone posted a very, very long comment with no spaces, so the column expands to hold the text since it can't identify a logical break-point.
  2:45pm
Marmalade kitty:

so what's happened? On Irwins show it was suggested that it may be a browser issue. I really don't think it's at my end.. browser is fine!?
  2:45pm
Van in DC:

@INJY - yep, exactlyrightexactlyrightexactlyrightexactlyright
  2:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

Listen to the Flower People!
  2:46pm
kat330:

Just odd that the same problem did NOT affect my combo OS and browser on Friday, but now it is. WHINE!! :)
  2:46pm
Van in DC:

The previous issue was long URLs, not comments, I think
  2:46pm
sfrances:

just turned my speaker to try & call & thank you & now I realize why I got no answer =) Always remember!
  2:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: That's an amazing lineup! For folkie-leaners like myself anyway.
  2:47pm
sfrances:

(i meant: turned *down* my speaker like a good listener when phoning in )
  2:47pm
Danne D:

Not your fault, Clay. Just delete my post at 2:22 and it will fix it.

is contributing to the margin madness. ;)
