  3:04pm
Cheri Pi:

My grandmother and her 5 sisters were all born in Norway, UP. what synchronicity!
  3:07pm
northguineahills:

  3:08pm
Cecile:

  3:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: No, a Gren Itch.
  3:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

Welcome Fredrik!
And may the station truly be everlasting.
  3:16pm
kat330:

@Van: Pass, despite the fact $2 includes a drink? That's will power.
  3:18pm
kat330:

I lived on Bank St. in the Village for a glorious six months in '71. Still can remember all the great smells -- got by on pizza by the slice. Good times.
  3:19pm
Laura L:

Who doesn't love a bold, intimate page that includes actual names!
  3:21pm
Clark Barr:

The Mineshaft??????

I'm shocked...
  3:21pm
Cheri Pi:

  3:21pm
Ike:

@Nordens Fåglar, you are not alone.
  3:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

RIAA! I think I have this one, RIAA is awesome in general, but this mix is just too perfect!
  3:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

So you used to write for NY Press, Irwin? Had no idea you were once that hip.
  3:27pm
Irwin:

@Matt: a cover story in '96!
  3:31pm
kat330:

And a slice of pizza was 30-cents back then.
  3:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: But NEVER the Village Voice, right? :)
  3:34pm
Irwin:

Wrote once for the VV. Didn't adhere to the party line and they never invited me back.
  3:37pm
Irwin:

Also wrote one article for the East Village Other in its waning days.
  3:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Fortunately WFMU has no party line--just parties lined up one after another, 24/7!
For an "Uncle Irwin", you seem to be quite the "cool uncle".
  3:41pm
Irwin:

If by "cool" you mean drinks a lot of rum.
  3:43pm
Parq:

Regret to say, managed to miss Irwin's NYPress turn, but well remember Strausbaugh's stuff therein. This oughta be good.
  3:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

I'm more a gin man, but we are accepting of all adult beverages here.
  3:43pm
Webhamster Henry:

So, will there be any Cherry Sisters on the show today?
  3:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

Gin joints, rum rooms, beer bars, wine wings, absinthe alcoves, pernod patios...
  3:46pm
Van in DC:

Beer bars. MMMM beer. In fact, I'm off to find one right...about....NOW. Have a great day all!
  3:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ain't no party like a Bauhaus party! Holla!
  3:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

Have a great one Van! Cheers!
  3:48pm
kat330:

Bau wow.
  3:49pm
northguineahills:

We had some hail here in Brooklyn.
  3:51pm
kat330:

Thought this sounded like Robyn Hitchcock. Found him only after he was solo.
  3:53pm
paula pc:

this song is so great and is not heard often enough! THANKS, Irwin!!
  3:54pm
Curtis [Boston]:

A question for John Strausbaugh: When did Greenwich Village develop the reputation for being louche?
  3:55pm
kat330:

@paula pc: I agree this is great!
  3:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

I thought Robyn Hitchcock as well! Didn't know he was a band before his solo releases!
  3:56pm
kat330:

@Matt: did you see Demme's Storefront Hitchcock? I recommend it if not.
  3:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

I like any Demme music film, that one sounds good indeed. Thanks for the rec!
  4:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

And hello to Mr. Strausbaugh!
  4:02pm
Webhamster Henry:

@JStrasbaugh: I hope there's a lot about the Strunsky family.
  4:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

East Village = "Upper, Lower East Side"
West Village = just Greenwich Village? I thought GV was West + East.
  4:05pm
kat330:

Or the Andriani's, the owners and landlords of the brownstone I had a top floor walk-up in with 3 other roommates. A visit back there in 2001 showed that name still at that address, probably the next generation though.
  4:05pm
Sean Daily:

Oh my gods, a real life "Operation: Hide Behind the Darkies".
  4:06pm
oooli:

irwin tryin as hard as the us olympic basketball team to sound like he cares
  4:08pm
Michael:

Hi Irwin. Would John opine on what he thinks is the prettiest or nicest street in the Village? Or what street/area has changed the most over time.
  4:10pm
kat330:

I'd like to hear what he has to say about the Weathermen there.
  4:14pm
Literatus:

What in the hell is this? I'm trying to sip champagne and talk about myself..
  4:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sounds like a Jim Henson-voiced "Beatnik"!
  4:18pm
Woo:

If you follow Nancy Sinatra on Twitter, she will follow you back.
  4:18pm
Carmichael:

Hi Rumanian Irwin and various substance imbibers. I'll also pass on the leather meet-up, although in SF I onced lived between a leather store called Leather Forever and a sandwich shop named Hot'n'Hunky. And Van, I'll see your beer and raise you one.
  4:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

Lee wrote pretty much everything he sang I think. He was the type who sold many songs because he wrote too many to sing himself.

And yes, "Lee + female" as I call it. Often Nancy S. but other singers as well.
  4:21pm
Carmichael:

Matt, read the section on Hazlewood in Irwin's book. Very enlightening.
  4:23pm
Webhamster Henry:

Hazelwood: Poet, Fool, or Bum?
  4:25pm
Carmichael:

OK, I erred. Maybe it was Unterberger's book on the same topic. Irwin wouldn't cover Hazlewood because he doesn't like rum.
  4:25pm
Wesleyan sophomore:

Hey fellas! I've got my gee-tar, go ahead and grab your banjo, let's take the train down to Washington Square Park and play!
  4:26pm
OWS:

It always comes down to the DRUMS! The Man can't stand the drums...because drums speak TRUTH!
  4:27pm
kat330:

Reminds me -- where the heck is that busking show Ken's been promising for some time?
  4:28pm
MD:

What was the neme of the Documentary...???
  4:28pm
Joan B.:

It's okay John, I can't stand you either... ;)
  4:29pm
Carmichael:

OK, Unterberger's Unknown Legends of Rock'n'Roll covers Hazlewood, among others.
  4:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: They said there was something like a few hours of footage from the Washington Square episode, and they would be playing it in a few weeks once it was all edited together.
  4:30pm
kat330:

Yeah, he scores no points with me for that. Seemed unnecessary.
  4:32pm
kat330:

@Matt: Right, I recall he said he was editing it. Just hoped it would be by now.
  4:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, didn't know Tiny Tim was on the Village scene for so many years.
  4:34pm
kat330:

@IRWIN: Mine query to him again is about the Weathermen in the Village, if he covers that, can expound on it, etc.
  4:35pm
kat330:

[excuse the obsolete construction of that sentence -- My query, s.b.]
  4:36pm
Carmichael:

Wow, I remember Dody Goodman from Hollywood Squares.
  4:36pm
common:

great interview!!
  4:36pm
Webhamster Henry:

The Village was the home of the Julius Monk revues at, say, Downstairs the the Upstairs!
  4:37pm
Woo:

Dody sounds like Malvina Reynolds.
  4:39pm
Laura L:

Dody of course played Mary Hartman's mother on MH, MH.
  4:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

I've loved Melvin Van Peeble's album Brer Soul ever since I heard it on FMU, for what I call its "eccentric soul". The song "Tenth And Greenwich (Women's House of Detention)" makes a lot more sense now--if pimps and others were shouting and talking with the inmates through the windows, that puts Melvin's lyrics in context. THANKS!
  4:39pm
rrg:

Beat me to it, Laura.
  4:42pm
kat330:

There's room for both Van Ronk & Baez -- the beauty of appreciating a wider spectrum per FMU. They each have a place and I love them both.
  4:44pm
common:

I'm with you kat330
  4:45pm
morisiah:

Inside Llewyn Davis movie in the works:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2042568/
  4:46pm
northguineahills:

This is the same melody as a Carter Family recording. I can't place the exact song.
  4:48pm
kat330:

@common: I cover songs from both of them and feel no cognitive dissonance from doing so.
  4:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ha HA! Love folk, but I LOVE how seriously they're taking this, down to the earnest backing vocal! Screw the MTA, the IRT is a much better subway song!
  4:56pm
kat330:

Thanks for the tip, morisiah!
  4:59pm
kat330:

Even in '71, our skylit brownstone 3 BR was only $500 a mo.
  5:02pm
kat330:

Am I dreaming, or did he ask for listener questions?
  5:03pm
Michael:

Wonderful interview!
  5:05pm
Carmichael:

Man, Mimi sure sounds like her sister. It's spooky, but beautiful.
  5:06pm
kat330:

Fresh outta olive branches, and Philo's home anyway. Bye!
  5:06pm
Parq:

May I belatedly point out that Dave Van Ronk often covered Joni Mitchell? My favorite Van Ronk album "Sunday Street" has a wonderfully matter-of-fact reading of "That Song About the Midway".
  5:15pm
Jeff:

I do so love me some Noël Coward.
  5:15pm
Michael:

Van Ronk was quite engaging in "No Direction Home". Gruff, funny and touched as he remembered "Bobby" back in the early days in the Village.
  5:25pm
the glowing one:

now I had to yawn, too.
  5:29pm
Carmichael:

I just figured out that Eric Idle was emulating Coward via The Penis Song in The Meaning of Life. Doh!
  5:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yawns are contagious.

Ah, "Bastard Town", not "Plaster Town". Hooray for the AccuPlaylist!
  5:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Kenny Wayne Shepherd, no clue who he is but what a ROCKIN cover of Fleetwood Mac!
  5:39pm
das:

Is somebody eating the three amigos?
  5:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

Harry Partch, like the soundtrack to a most unusual cartoon.
  5:52pm
Carmichael:

Thanks for the music and convo, Irwin and everyone. See you at the Mineshaft!
  5:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Irwin and John for an informative and fun show!
