Thanks Sean! It's good to be back, although I wouldn't mind continuing the vacation from a beach somewhere. (Someday I'll figure out a good way to do that.)
  12:11pm
Bob in Miami:

This is gorgeous Irene, welcome back!
  12:25pm
Van in DC:

This morning I saw a CNN write up about the Olympics closing ceremony saying that NBC cut out a few performances, notably Ray Davies, The Who, and *Kate Bush*. I about had a heart attack when I saw that...but found out it was just audio of RUTH over something else and not Kate live.
  12:29pm
Sean in Bristol, UK:

@ Van, the chance of seeing Kate "live" these days are pretty remote,
  12:30pm

@ Bob in Miami -- EXACTLY!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
Irene:

Yeah, that sign shows up on this winding road that takes you to Ft. Adams where the festivals are held. Lots of brick walls to keep out the curious. Pretty funny!

  1:55pm
kat330:

That's excellent to hear! You folks staged a bang-up Olympics. I wish I could say anything positive about the network coverage over here, however.
  1:59pm
Hugh:

Welcome back to the air Irene,
Had friends,& some family at Newport, all agree w/ Peter's remark about how festivals are for the young!! Up-coming; Philadelphia Folk Fest. this wknd, haven't a clue about any of the line-up except, Red Clay Ramblers. This event is always a blast!
  1:59pm
Jay/ London:

the BBC did great we had 26 channels for the games and no ads ... enjoying the show Irene glad i tuned in

flyin' hun:

Howdy Irene! Big greetings from eastern Europe....actually Belgrade, Serbia...Awesome list!
  2:01pm
Bob in Miami:

Hey Irene,is Rodriguez the same cat who did one LP on Buddah in the early 70's. I think i have that Lp in my collection. Great track regardless..
  2:01pm
Bill:

Went to one of the Fleadhs at Randalls Island to see two acts in particular, Frances Black and the Sawdoctors. The went on at exact same time. At a later show, I told her about this she smiled but didnt seem too thrilled that we did go over to catch the lads who came all the way from Tuam.
  2:02pm
kat330:

Here's Irene's great photo of Rodriguez: http://www.flickr.com/photos/irene_trudel/7679681386/

Can't wait to see the Searching for Sugar Man doc having heard so many great things about it.
  2:04pm
kat330:

Speaking of fine music documentaries, we just watched "Anvil" on Saturday. I recommend it to everyone, not just metalheads. It succeeded in the ways the Pixies' doc did not.
  2:06pm
Van in DC:

Yay! Sharon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
Irene:

Thanks Kat I've been meaning to see that Anvil documentary. Heard great things about it.
  2:07pm
v k:

if you like Rodriguez, you might also like another overlooked musician of that era: Ted Lucas; great self titled album (1975)
  2:08pm
northguineahills:

Thanks for posting Irene's pic of Rodriguez, kat!
  2:09pm
Hugh:

The Philly Fest is at a farm, in Schwenkesville PA. Very Close to Jersey, way north of Philly.
  2:09pm
Sean in Bristol, UK:

@Kat330,
Totally agree, saw Anvil last year I think, terrific, recommend "searching for Sugarman"
  2:14pm
kat330:

The personality of Lips, his sheer earnestness, helped to make the film compelling.
  2:18pm
kat330:

This is a lovely laid-back and soothing set, Irene. :)
  2:20pm
Bill:

That is a fantastic shot of Rodriguez, Irene.
  2:21pm
Mike East:

@kat330 - I agree. There was something about them that I related to. Its about not giving up on your dreams even when everything in reality is telling you that you probably should.
  2:23pm
kat330:

Full-on flashback time! :)
  2:24pm
kat330:

@Mike: Glad for such an upbeat ending, but I did wonder to Philo, Did his sister ever get paid back?
  2:25pm
Bob in Miami:

Great set, first time i saw Arlo was at the Newport Folk Fess in 1966. (Alice's Restaurant). Did you see the Guthrie family reunion??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
Irene:

Yes, Bob, I actually saw the Guthrie Family Reunion at Central Park Summerstage, then saw part of their set at Newport. Ducked out to see somebody Else because it was virtually the same set. Totally great though! Arlo said he's playing Carnegie Hall at Thanksgivingtime with Pete Seeger.
  2:28pm
Mike East:

@kat330 - I sure hope so. I think they made some money with that movie and the hype that followed it.
  2:30pm
kat330:

@Mike: Yeah, that was Philo's response, that the proceeds from the film probably paid off her loan.

@Irene: Did you see Seeger on the Colbert Report [from 8-6-2012]? Try to find it if not. He's a 93-yr-old juggernaut.
  2:31pm
Bill:

We saw Arlo live in studio at "Nashville Now" with Ralph Emory and Shotgun Red.
  2:33pm
kat330:

And then also a glimpse of him in yet another music film we saw this weekend, the Joan Baez doc "How Sweet the Sound."
  2:39pm
Van in DC:

Yay, Laura! :)
  2:40pm
kat330:

Yes, yay! :)
  2:43pm
kat330:

I lived in Manhattan at the time of her Fillmore East performance -- couldn't afford concerts though.
  2:44pm
Bob in Miami:

You're killing us Irene!!

  2:48pm
doca:

wow, and i've never heard of laura nyro before. thanks!
  2:48pm
kat330:

@v k: Mm, I like AS, too! Weird as this might sound, I think one of the newest Fiona Apple tracks could be covered beautifully by the AS vocalist.
  2:51pm
Van in DC:

Sigh...did I mention how much I missed you Irene? All is well in the universe again. :)
  2:54pm
kat330:

So very glad you have returned, Irene! What I've heard today is why I wrote that comment at the end of your last playlist before vacation. It's a fact.
  2:55pm
the glowing one:

It's funny when people compare someone to Kate Bush... implying Bush's singing was unlike any other. They've obviously never heard Laura Nyro.
  2:57pm

BTW, there's been another shooting. This time at the Texas A&M university... :(
