Filled with love for all mankind, Artie is amongst you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Doug Schulkind:

I feel the love, Artie.
  5:35pm Holly in NC:

Those women clearly have plans that encompass more the making of music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Doug Schulkind:

How does one say "pitching woo" in Arabic?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Doug Schulkind:

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
There will be no Kaminsky Kamoutsky show from Jesse tonight (normally heard Tuesdays, 7-9pm, ET). Jesse got sucked into a vortex of primordial ooze and he's too sticky to manipulate the turntables.
  5:40pm Artie:

نصب وو
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Google Translate translates ونصب وو as "Monument Wu."
  5:45pm Holly in NC:

يطرح للبيع في الأسواق يغازل ???
Please Hammer don't hurt me! (inside joke)
  5:47pm Artie:

"My darling, our ancestors will build a monument to the Wu pitched this evening."
  5:49pm Artie:

And I'm guessing Obelisk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Has there ever been a major league pitcher named Wu? If not, it's only a matter of time.
  5:52pm Holly in NC:

@Artie - nice!

Google translates mine as "Put for sale on the market flirts"
  5:53pm Artie:

Wunsch and Wurtz, yes. But, sadly, baseball has not yet found it's Wu. Perhaps the sport really is just coming of age.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Doug Schulkind:

The Orioles once had on their pitching staff a Mason and a Dixon. Just thought I'd share that.
  5:58pm kat330:

Ah, really nice image there!
Hi, Doug & all! Thanks for all the laughter, btw.
  5:59pm Artie:

Which was the southpaw?
  5:59pm holland oats:

i am with you all
  6:00pm kat330:

You work for U-haul, you say?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Doug Schulkind:

holland in da howwwwse! (OK, that was embarrassing.)
  6:01pm kat330:

[must work in kitchen, back with Philo in a jiffy though]
  6:01pm listener james from westwood:

u bought it, u haul it!
evenin' all!
  6:01pm holland oats:

how to wreck a nice beach?
  6:04pm northguineahills:

That image looks more Persian then Arab, but maybe Doug's already covered that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey kat330! [and hey philo!] and HEY LJFW!
  6:04pm listener james from westwood:

@holland: good book, that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Doug Schulkind:

@NHG this program is frocking itself in ignorance and using Persian, Arabian and Middle Eastern interchangeably. There's even a track from Afghanistan coming up, for goodness sakes. (Believe me, for goodness.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Doug Schulkind:

@holland oats
I'm still all a-flutter over your Sister Rosetta Tharpe sleuthing from last Friday.
  6:09pm holland oats:

was it her? i thought we filed that under unsolved mysteries
  6:10pm holland oats:

ah this omar rekkid is great. love sublime frequencies so friggin' much
  6:11pm northguineahills:

Ok, I came in late and just saw the title. I know this will kick ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

@holland
TOTALLY her. Triple confirmed.
  6:13pm kat330:

Now that I can see the list and see the name, that Farid most definitely sounded lovesick.
  6:14pm Philo Gristle:

Hi Doug! Back from the kitchen with a full plate ready to ... roll. Sounds fantastic so far!
  6:16pm kat330:

Surf's up in Arabia!

If I had any guts, I'd have played Dick Dale after Omar Khorshid. But I am gutless.
  6:19pm Philo Gristle:

Doug -- It's because you eat healthy and take it easy on beer!
  6:19pm kat330:

Oh, yeah, sure, Doug -- gutless my ass!
  6:22pm kat330:

BWIM, you've always seemed a very brave soul to me, DJ Doug.
  6:23pm holland oats:

by which i mean?
  6:25pm kat330:

Yep, HO! Not as good a-sleuthing as your Tharpe dingus last week, but still good on ya. :)
  6:26pm Paul Sherratt:

Been a long, long day but am listening and it's grand..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Dick Dale was of Lebanese descent. His infusion of Eastern scales into surf music is the 9th wonder. The 10th wonder: Paul Sherratt.
  6:28pm holland oats:

dingus, heh - in my mind i always hear that word bogie-fied ala 'maltese falcon'
  6:29pm Pascal:

Just tuning in. Beautiful to hear Fairuz on the interwaves!
  6:29pm kat330:

I don't recall it from that. Philo brought that into my daily vocabulary all the way from Finland, film/lit noir freak that he is.
  6:30pm holland oats:

back me up philo
  6:31pm Philo Gristle:

You are correct, sir! Though I FIRST associate with the film title Dirty Dingus McGee. Bogie second.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Najat Aatabou from Morocco and Selda from Turkey will have to fight it out over who gets to be obsessed over more by me. Ha!
  6:33pm kat330:

Wasn't that I didn't believe you, Mr. Oats -- that's just not how it got into my lexicon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Greetings Pascal!

it's got "roundheels," which i first encountered in james ellroy's work.
  6:40pm fred:

Call me childish, but I can't stop laughing over this: Paul Ryan embodies the Gen X grunge sensibilities, and is cooler than Mitt Rmoney, because "he listens to Led Zeppelin" courtesy of Andra Gillespie, an associate professor of political science at Emory University in Atlanta who has studied post-civil rights era politicians.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Doug Schulkind:

Led Zeppelin is more like Gen Ex-Lax.
  6:42pm holland oats:

cashmere was a pretty good song i guess
  6:42pm Holly in NC:

Najat vs Selda? Why choose? Both more than worthy of obsession!
  6:43pm trsh:

I wonder about cultural differences between Saudia Arabia and those teeny countries to the east - Bahrain and Qatar.
Any musical clues, Mr. D.S?
(g'Evening)
  6:43pm Philo Gristle:

Always liked The Immigrant Song, never cared for Plant's vox.
  6:44pm kat330:

Loving these album titles, too.
  6:44pm Holly in NC:

I like Led Zeppelin, a lot. I DESPISE Paul Ryan. I suspect all surviving members of LZ despise TP also.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Doug Schulkind:

I am so gutless. If I had any guts, I'd play Cashmere right here and now. At least the Ordinaires version.

@Holly
You know I'm kidding. There is more than enough of me to go around.

@trsh
Get your mind out of the Qatar. (That is funny because it's really pronounced "Cutter.")
  6:47pm trsh:

'Cutter' eh? i was thinking it was like 'guitar' Qatar.
  6:48pm kat330:

OK, now I believe you, Doug. Only a gutless guy has to explain his homophonic puns. ;)
  6:48pm northguineahills:

I know Oman and Yemen have rather distinct musical identities. The only publicly sanctioned music in Saudi Arabia tends to be readings of the Qaran or the muezzin's call to prayer. I'm not so sure on the gulf states musical heritages.....
  6:48pm fred:

Now that I've stopped laughing, has anyone else seen Hossein Alizadeh? He's Iranian so unlikely to grace your shores anytime soon, but I saw him earlier this year and is an utterly amazing musician. I mean that, as is mind blowingly good
  6:48pm holland oats:

k time for din-din, g'nite all!
  6:49pm kat330:

Bye, Holland! Bon appetit!
  6:49pm Philo Gristle:

'night, ho!
  6:52pm kat330:

Sorry, fred, I haven't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Doug Schulkind:

You calling me homophonic, kat330? Some of my best friends are sound-alikes! See ya, holland.

And a merry good evening to you, Fred!
  6:54pm kat330:

Per the image, I'd be surprised if there are very many all-female bands in much of the region.
  6:55pm listener james from westwood:

i could get very much into a 10-hour version of this episode. but you might want to, you know, sleep and eat and such.
  6:55pm kat330:

No, Doug, not that there's anything wrong if you are.
  6:55pm trsh:

Qatar has the biggest GDP:population ratio of the three by a few magnitudes. Yemen I know has something like the youngest age structure in the world. Brutal women's rights and lack thereof makes me lose interest pretty quick, I'll admit
  6:56pm Holly in NC:

Doug - as the very new owner of a phone that does things other than make phone calls (good lord! I totally see the light - amazing!), do you know if gtds stream archived shows will ever be available for the 'fmu android app? Really behind on you & Charlie, and, well everyone;-)
  6:57pm northguineahills:

My local bodega guys from Yemen gave me a few Yemeni tapes that are quite awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Holly, I encourage you to email WFMU station manager Ken and register your desire for the new version of the WFMU app to play archives of streamed shows. I know that Ken is all behind this happening, but it's good for him to know there's a demand.
  6:58pm Philo Gristle:

Swell show, Doug! Djinneus! Much obliged.
  6:59pm kat330:

Such a short hour -- by in a flash. Thank you, Mr. Schulkind for another trip 'round the world!

Have a really nice rest of your night/day, everyone!
  6:59pm fred:

@kat330: check him out, he can improvise while conveying something of scholarly music, which is quite a feat, because it sounds closer to nomadic music, but with rules, hard to explain for me, I don't know enough

@Phio Gristle
It is 110% my pleasure. So long kat330! You've always been kat331 in my book.
  7:00pm kat330:

Thanks, Fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Doug Schulkind:

This amazing rock and roll is from Sudan. Making such sounds now would surely get you stoned there (and not the good kind).
  7:07pm Pascal:

This bambi is a real Thumper... (sorry).
  7:08pm trsh:

Heard stuff I've never read before.
  7:08pm fred:

@Doug: I often wonder why religious types see music as such a mortal threat. Then I look at WFMU. And both understand and vow to save for next year's pledge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Yay Fred!

That was fun fun fun! Thanks for hanging in there with me, y'all!
  7:14pm Bas, NL:

Thanks for the great music Doug!
  7:15pm Doug Schulkind:

My pleasure, Bas! Come back on Friday (9 to noon, Eastern) for a three-hour version of the show.
  1:20pm Matt from Springfield:

No Amanda today :(
But, I can catch up with this GTDS Archive! :) Here I go!
  1:27pm Doug S.:

Matt:
Not that I wouldn't encourage a dive into the GTDS archive Dumpster, but Amanda IS on today. It's next week that she's on vacation. Here's her playlist:

http://bit.ly/PplTBO
  1:37pm Matt from Springfield:

DUDE! Thanxamillion!
I thought it was this week--and there wasn't a playlist on the front page.

Immensely enjoying this spacey Iranian rock though, so I will return! In the days of past future past...er, whatever :)
  3:54pm Matt from Springfield:

All right, NOW the episode is complete! :)

I like the idea of the "little show" being the "trending" show--thanks for sharing these delectible snippets from the Middle East you've found!

Salaam alaikum and shalom aleichem, Doug!
