Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from August 21, 2012 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Cheri Pi:

BT-this is your wildest set yet.
  3:15pm
Carmichael:

Ya Cheri. I'd cook 'em every day if I could. BBQ=beer=fun.
  3:16pm
Cheri Pi:

mmmm did you say beer?
  3:18pm
Woo:

Beer? How long til that whistle blows?
  3:18pm
BSI:

[wakes up suddenly].... bluh?
  3:18pm
DCE:

did you say Fastway?
  3:18pm
Cheri Pi:

This makes me want to dance on a pole and earn some beer money
  3:18pm
Jim Devoid:

Ah, Fast Eddy's post-Motorhead band...used to have a sleeveless checkerboard FASTWAY shirt!
  3:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

I can rip off a Zep riff and sing like a nasal voiced hair metal band too!

Afternoon everyone! Welcome back BT!
  3:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: It's 3 hours later on the East Coast...so, where are those ribs?? ;)
  3:20pm
efd:

Jerry Shirley behind the drums on that Fastway cut!
  3:22pm
DCE:

the government needs a Witchfinder General. Probably could cut that whole Surgeon General thing out of the bud-jet.
  3:22pm
hamburger:

Cheri Pi:

  3:24pm
DCE:

not to persecute witches. on the contrary, to glorify them.
  3:24pm
Carmichael:

Point me to the babyback wormhole, Matt!
  3:24pm
Ike:

The music is "eh" but Witchfinder General is maybe the best name for a band since Dinosaur Pile-Up. And the label name is good too.
  3:26pm
jljl:

Digging the metal but where was Witchfinder Gen recorded? Very bathroom sounding.
  3:27pm
Cheri PI:

Beer! BSI!
  3:27pm
Woo:

Close the set with Metz one more time? Party?
  3:27pm
Ike:

I am also in favor of time-traversing wormholes leading to food. And I dig that Northern Haze.
  3:28pm
Cheri PI:

Slap Dat!
  3:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Stand by, ribs about to go through the wormhole! It comes in pretty fast, so make sure you catch them and don't get your clothes stained!
  3:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

@hamburger: Funny, I just bought a pre-made quiche lorraine yesterday, also for too lazy to cook occasions in the next week.
  3:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Follow at your lee-zhure, or at your leh-shure.

I was just thinking that it's been a while since the last Brian Turner "solo" show.
  3:32pm
Cheri PI:

Hey, did you get the memo? I got 2 boxes of delicious swag today.
  3:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

All right, finally got your rewards!
Merry Swagmas Cheri!
  3:36pm
hamburger:

It's a quiche-spiracy!! / sorry :)
  3:36pm
Woo:

If I were to be driving my car around New Jersey right now, I could actually hear this from my car radio? Is that what you're saying?
  3:36pm
Tom G:

My mom heard O Rex and said it was probably the worst thing she's ever heard. She said, "I hope these are your friends and you didn't pay for this."
  3:37pm
DCE:

this takes lo-fi to new depths
  3:37pm
Cheri PI:

I"ll probably just heat up some swag for dinner tonight, too lazy to cook.
  3:38pm
DCE:

haha, the thought of hearing it on a car radio at a stoplight...the car next to you has loud hip hop going on...
  3:38pm
Carmichael:

Sounds like everyone is finally getting swaggified. These are great days.
  3:39pm
BSI:

Dinner is easy over here: Gnawing on the bones of the postman that neglected to deliver me swag today...
  3:39pm
puredirt:

he sounds like mick jagger!
  3:39pm
zoran:

this flex unger... so good
  3:40pm
puredirt:

ah it is of course must be the beers I found the math difficult also ;-)
  3:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Totally dig the Witchfinder idea. Of course, at the Federal Government level, it would be called something like the National Witch Merit Selection Board (NWMSB), and the Witchfinder General is the chairman. They search for qualified witches around the country, and promote them to help their spells reach around the US, and the world.
  3:40pm
DCE:

tooooo funny!
  3:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

Always love this Gimme Shelter sample!
  3:41pm
puredirt:

wonderfull track!
  3:42pm
DCE:

why are we fighting? because the Hell's Angels drank all the beer!
  3:43pm
Ike:

I've done that many times @DCE.
  3:43pm
dan:

now you're talking brian me you old mucker - - chas and dave!
  3:43pm
Ike:

(The stoplight thing, not being a Hells Angel drinking all the beer and/or fighting.)
  3:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

@hamburger: History books will call it "the Lorraine Quiche-spiracy"--because it's so crusty and fluffy, it's a quiche-spiracy of silence...
  3:43pm
andy/newcastle:

Hurrr. These guys should've closed the Olympic Ceremony. And Mick Jagger started sounded a bit like Mark E Smith there at the end.
  3:44pm
herr noiser:

oh god. i was wondering what the hell you'd gotten into here and then I looked at the playlist. Dammit Giles!
Avatar 3:45pm
BT:

Haw haw we're covering this Noiser
  3:45pm
dan:

sorry, should've been 'me old mucker' - -i'm sure everyone was highly confused by that lapse in cockney dialect.
  3:46pm
herr noiser:

it is pretty hilarious
  3:46pm
andy/newcastle:

Colin in Glasgow:

Cult! Straight up! Who was it that did their Love Removal Machine played at 33 and released on a 45 rpm 7inch? Made much more sense at that speed.
  3:48pm
Cheri PI:

I DON"T BELIEVE THIS!!!
  3:49pm
?:

Yes - the Cult! - was just listening to this the other day - and I'd recommend checking out that Sharky's Machine Cover of Cat Scratch Fever -

Tom G, I'd be interested to hear what your mother thinks of this track.
  3:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha! Untitled track on a split 7" -- name: Penis Geyser!
  3:55pm
Penis Geyser:

Stop tearing down our "Coming Soon" posters.
  3:57pm
Cheri PI:

Oh Penis Geyser!
  3:58pm
Introductions:

Penis Geyser...Pussy Riot.
Pussy Riot....Penis Geyser.
Now dance.
  4:03pm
Tom G:

Haha ... let's put it this way, I played her Belfast Gypsies "Secret Police" which was hers when she was a teenager and she said it was nothing but drug music and she'd never heard it before.
  4:05pm
BSI:

dammit. This Twilight Zone track is tickling the brain like I haven't heard it in 25 years but don't remember from what.... compilation track maybe? Pullin' my hair out over here.... Was this on LAFMS "darker scratcher" or something?
  4:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

LOVE this Retro-Electro feel! Heavy Euro feel as well, makes me want to go into a [West] German club in the 80s.

  4:11pm
KP:

Lonesome Dave died for this?
  4:12pm
Cheri Pi:

speaking of...-I became the proud owner of a Ram Lam(p) named black Betty yesterday. Pics later on FB. Get jealous now. "Black betty had a child (Ram-A-lamp) The damn thing gone wild"
  4:18pm
Cheri Pi:

...Directed by Torbjörn Axelman
  4:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

STFU you stupid ligonberry eatin' Swede!! You fucked up a very wonderful Lee Hazlewood piece!! Arrrrrgghh!!
Avatar 4:19pm
BT:

hey now
  4:19pm
Cheri Pi:

that pissed me off too MfS: fuck there he is again! ENOUGH!!!
  4:20pm
Anti-Swede contingency:

we fully support MFS's right to express his thoughts.
  4:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

@BSI: Look for one of those wormholes--after a week of practicing it, a marching band will come marching through it to where you are now. Playing "Black Betty".
  4:21pm
Cheri Pi:

and I'm proudly Swedish...but there are limits to Thor's reach and Lee Hazelwood is one of them.
  4:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

We need to protect our Nation's airwaves against this menace, this...dude!

Well, 1) I'm pretty sure the language being spoken is Swedish, and 2) We have FMU commenters who are Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, even an Icelander or two, but I don't recall any Swedes on here, so... ;)
  4:23pm
DCE:

leper colonies?
  4:23pm
Cheri Pi:

I'm going to break something from Ikea when I get home.
  4:23pm
Carmichael:

Rodriguez!
  4:24pm
Stanley:

Rodriguez - for those of you who have not seen the film, I urge you to see it. Its wonderful.
  4:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ahhh, this Rodriguez calmin' me down.
@Cheri: Ah, I had you marked down as Norwegian--but like you said: Thor sometimes has to be sent to his room! :)
  4:24pm
Cheri Pi:

...and replace it with an 'Merican Ram Lamp, in protest.
  4:24pm
still b/p:

Sounds here like he could be Christopher Walken's brother.
  4:25pm
Cheri Pi:

this is nice....I like disgusting songs.
  4:26pm
DCE:

now I'm picturing Matt with a little notebook writing everybody's name and presumed heritage in it. Notes in the margins, in red.
  4:26pm
Marshall Stacks:

I've only heard his Sugar Man before. In this he sounds a bit like David Bromberg. Voice, not subject matter.
  4:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Everything's very organized, tracing everything known about everyone here, for eventually publication as "WFMU Comment Boards: A Social History Vol. 1, 2007-2017"
  4:28pm
YETI BOB:

How does a child of Mexican immigrants living in Detroit wind up sounding like a New York Jew?
  4:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ha, Medical Records!
Digitize Medical Records now! Then, stream them!
  4:32pm
DCE:

yeah, Alvarius B is coming to nearby Oberlin College
  4:34pm
Cheri Pi:

That's a coffee table book right there MfS
  4:38pm
Ike:

Hey @MfS, I demand a positive depiction in this tome, or I will fling several Thanksgiving turkey carcasses at you through time-space wormholes.
  4:38pm
max:

Never would of thought there would be a sonic youth/techno connection, and that it would be as good as this
  4:39pm
Update to Matt's little book:

"Ike is always peppy and upbeat, and in no way can be construed as 'cranky'"
  4:40pm
Cheri Pi:

this rules.
  4:40pm
Cheri Pi:

mommy's happy.
  4:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

That is a good coffee table book, I'll have to make sure it's in a rectangular shape (at least a foot wide), and real shiny laminated hardcover.
  4:40pm
northguineahills:

Anaal Nathrakh reminds me some sides w/ Zorn & Eye.
  4:41pm
Cheri Pi:

will there be a key to everyone's fake handles too?
  4:41pm
dan:

Q.How does a child of Mexican immigrants living in Detroit wind up sounding like a New York Jew?
A.With a lot of practice.
  4:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Ike can also be described as generous, always offering things to others, and even suggesting where they can place it"...
  4:44pm
BSI:

Squalid violence for everyone! Wheee!
  4:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cheri: Real names or which pseudonyms are from the same person?
  4:46pm
Ike:

ROTFL, Matt & BSI.
  4:47pm
Cheri Pi:

I was thinking pseudonyms, fuck real names, people could lose their jobs!
  4:53pm
Letha:

Lost the signal. I can't hear you...
  4:54pm
Letha:

Now I can. It's quiet.
  4:54pm
Cheri Pi:

hope there are no surprises in this piece, just 11'd the earbuds.
  4:54pm
Carmichael:

Hey Cheri, Hazlewood's bio says he traveled to Sweden and met film director Torbjorn Axelman, and they collaborated on 3 albums, including the song played here. So it WAS Swedish you heard, however fractured it may have sounded.
  4:54pm
Cheri Pi:

Letha, crank up the volume!
  4:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

Now that's a good Appendix: a "commenter tree" with the "primary" handles, and other pseudonyms and aliases used by that same commenter.

You couldn't do real names, I would have to include a Privacy Act request form!
  4:55pm
Letha:

Ha! Done!
  4:55pm
northguineahills:

I was enjoying the Thomas Koner.
  4:55pm
Cheri Pi:

I recognized the smug/superior Swedish accent swedes have.
  4:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

Novaya Zemlya, I was about to say how it was the Soviet surface nuke testing grounds. They're those long, tall 2 islands sticking out from Russia into the Arctic Ocean.
  4:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

Letha de Temeraire! :)
  4:59pm
Cheri Pi:

I'll go first, I have posted as Cheri Pat.
  4:59pm
Marshall Stacks:

Novaya Zemlya also figured in Nabokov's masterpiece Pale Fire as the home of the deposed king Charles II. (Called "Zembla" in the novel).
  4:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

I guessed Swedish because of the accent's "mushiness", even when they don't sound full-on Swedish Chef, Swedes have that, IDK, "mushy" way of stringing consonants and vowels together. (Listen to the recording of Yngwie's tantrum on the flight to Tokyo--it devolves at one point into all mush, no words!)
  5:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Um...was there a crazy weekend in Vegas with dc pat???
  5:00pm
Cheri Pi:

I'll follow up on the Yngwie tantrum for sure.
  5:01pm
Cheri Pi:

Play some Daddy!
  5:04pm
common:

i missed the beer conversation...and the swedish conversation. Stupid work.
  5:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Welcome, common! A shame you missed it but you're here now--and close to *real* beer time for you?
  5:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

Speaking of beer time, sounds like Mr. Gumble here has learned a new language, or invented his own...
  5:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

I'm still waiting for Tom Scharpling to film "Zork, no refunds"
  5:32pm
hubba:

Lame Drivers in town tonight...
  5:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

Spoofer! (However, I *would* like to see that film!! :)
  5:44pm

This Daddy Luthor sounds like Ethan Buckler...?
  5:52pm
the glowing one:

Damn, I just got told by this fox, I'm dumbstruck.
  5:55pm
Droll:

Obviously Hot Lunch has the goods when it comes to sound, a quick check online confirms the 7" artwork is also up to par. Definitely looking forward to more Hot Lunch.
  5:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thank you muchly Brian! Wonderful show with you back in the "Captain's Chair"!

Have a good night everybody!
  6:22pm

Xray Pop in heavy rotation this week on FMU, not a bad thing.
