Hullo dere. Lots and lots of Assassin of Silence today, with a dollop of pragVec on top.
  11:57am
Carmichael:

Alrighty then. Hello Tony. Eagerly awaiting the hiss.
  11:58am
Dervish:

Isn't it funny how every assassin has two asses?
Avatar 11:59am
tonyc:

Hey Carmichael and Dervish!
  12:00pm
listener james from westwood:

good tuesday, tony and fellow hiss liss'ners!
  12:01pm

Hi Tony! Great to be. Hear.

Hiss'ners? Hello there, James!

Cheers, bretheren & sisteren!
Avatar 12:05pm
tonyc:

Hola, BSI!
  12:07pm
BSI:

Not familiar with these particular Assassins, though I'll admit the ears perked up at what appeared to be a Bob Calvert / 1978-era Hawklords reference in the name...
Avatar 12:09pm
tonyc:

Not sure if the name is a reference to Calvert & Co. -- but it certainly could be!
  12:10pm
kat330:

Hi, Tony and all double ass in da house!

I predict a very low pressure of keys this entire week. If you have our weather and not under a work whip, you'd be outside and away from your keyboards, too! But my ears will still be tuned it outdoors.
Avatar 12:13pm
tonyc:

A low-pressure key front? Greetings, Kat!
  12:15pm
kat330:

Seriously, it is *perfect* weather -- finally -- and I won't squander it inside. I'll try to come in to peck out a note here and there, but no promises. Later! :)
  12:24pm
Mean Mr Mustard:

hi all,
weather here (Manchester UK) is rain, rain, rain, same as all summer and unfortunately every summer!

Nice to ketchup with you here, Mr. Mustard!

I relish being the opportunity to listen.
Avatar 12:35pm
tonyc:

Welcome, North Fork -- though for relish, mustard, and ketchup North Spoon might be better.
  12:36pm
listener james from westwood:

i'll be out in this lovely weather today, but sadly (a) to drop a car off for repairs and (b) before tape hiss is through. :(
Avatar 12:38pm
tonyc:

By the by, these are all demos for songs that never came out.
  12:41pm
Carmichael:

Did Assassin really only put out 1 official album? Beneath all the Madness is the lone disc I could find. Shame ...
Avatar 12:42pm
tonyc:

@ Carmichael: Two albums, plus a Curnutte solo LP.

Ya, I saw the Factorial solo. What is the other album?
Avatar 12:45pm
tonyc:

It's called "Phaze Shifter" and came out in '80.
  12:45pm
Manuel Van Brüssel:

Ahoy everybody!
  12:47pm

Thanks Tony!

just cabin boy ahoy Tony ahoy! many yyyys...
Avatar 12:56pm
tonyc:

Hey - is the way I'm doing the tracklist today weird for those of you following along in itunes or the like?( I'm putting the track titles under artist, since I have set headings.)
  12:56pm
rock_0la:

Ahoy Tony! Ahoy Manuel Van B!
Todo bien?
  12:58pm
Carmichael:

This sounds very Cars/80-ish in general. Interesting for late 70s recording. Curnette's solo stuff sounded more psychedelic/classic rock. To me, anyway.
Avatar 12:58pm
tonyc:

Hola, rock-Ola!
Avatar 1:00pm
tonyc:

@ Carmichael: You're right about the progression. By the early '80s he was doing minimal synth (on some tracks anyhow). And agreed about the Cars...
  1:09pm
listener james from westwood:

from my standpoint the track listings are quite clear. as this isn't being archived, putting titles in that field won't munge up playlist searches, so this is quite intuitive for the way you're doing whole "albums."
Avatar 1:10pm
tonyc:

Thanks, listener james -- that's exactly how I hoped you'd all see it!
  1:11pm
Ricardo Montalban:

So many New Wave bands of this era sound like an amalgam of Talking Heads and Cars doing Roxy Music.
  1:12pm
Manuel Van Brüssel:

@ rock-Ola todo perfecto! cleaving the waves, discovering the assassins!
Avatar 1:13pm
tonyc:

@ Ricardo Montalban: But not too many sounded that way in '77! Assassin of Silence should have gotten a little more attention than they did, methinks (i.e., zero attention).
  1:15pm
listener james from westwood:

also? hooray for freeform radio and the ability to play whole albums!
  1:18pm
rock_0la:

Jim Curnutte rules (sometimes feels like Jim the Morrisson is just 'round the corner ... or is it me?)
Avatar 1:19pm
tonyc:

@ listener james: Well, no whole albums here today, of course -- but long sets by the same artist, yes!
Avatar 1:20pm
tonyc:

@ rock-Ola: Yes, I do see Morrison peeking around the corner....
  1:21pm
Ricardo Montalban:

@tonyc: I was just making my obligatory, general New Wave statement. Not necessarily waxing critical of the Assassins. That was such a vibrant era, so many cool, lost bands to rediscover.
Avatar 1:21pm
tonyc:

Two versions of this track 'cause it's a favorite....
  1:22pm
rock_0la:

Two is 2 times better ! #lovemetwotimes
  1:25pm
rock_0la:

Psycho' Garage-ish after time it is. (Someday)
Avatar 1:26pm
tonyc:

@ Ricardo M: Understood! Guess I just feel a bit bad for them that their two album were such total flops, so I reflexively act defensively on their behalf.
  1:28pm
listener james from westwood:

must jet outta here. really great stuff today. thanks as always, tony, and see y'all later!
  1:29pm
Ricardo Montalban:

It's great stuff! I always feel kind of bad for those records by artists that seemed to have faded into the dust of oblivion. I wonder if they become accountants or something. Hopefully they don't despair the seeming apathy of their respective time and can enjoy their legacy.
Avatar 1:29pm
tonyc:

Thanks for stopping by, james! See ya....

rock_0la:

Wild Turkey is pouring. 1 for you too Tony ... Cheers from rainy Brussels! really good stuff out there, thx for Djaying

  1:54pm
northguineahills:

@rock_0la: I was thinking the same thing (about the J. Morrison comparison.
  2:03pm
rock_0la:

@northguineahills comparison is often a pain in the ass but bckgnd influence can't be ignored and here obviously ... ;)
Avatar 2:18pm
tonyc:

Sadly, neither the Assassin of Silence LPs nor the Curnutte solo have ever been reissued. "Phaze Shifter" is the easiest to find second-hand; the others can get pretty expensive. And remember, what you're hearing today are just demo versions of album tracks -- the albums themselves sound pretty different.
Avatar 2:22pm
tonyc:

Coming up at the end of today's show: a pragVec Peel Session.
  2:22pm
Ricardo Montalban:

That set was amazing!
Avatar 2:25pm
tonyc:

Glad you liked it, senor!
  2:28pm
Manuel Van Brüssel:

i really enjoyed the shift ctrl/ walking.. and the Phaze to Exit songs; the guitar sound is really lovely, who is playing?
Avatar 2:31pm
tonyc:

@ Manuel: Probably Curnutte -- but possibly Larry Knight, who plays lead on the finished version of the album. He played bass with Spirit for a while.
Avatar 2:31pm
tonyc:

Knight did, that is.
  2:31pm
rock_0la:

Great stuff Tony! Thx again for sharing
as the sun is going down here I wish you all the best. Talk to you soon amigo!
Avatar 2:32pm
tonyc:

See you, rock-Ola! Thanks for tuning in....
  2:45pm
rock_0la:

too bad it's never been released ... "Full Blown Hostile". fancy crunchy bites and fuzzy slices all the way. love it!
Avatar 2:46pm
tonyc:

Stayed tuned next for pragVec after this track....
Avatar 2:49pm

@ rock-Ola: I imagine someone decided the lyrics on "Full Blown Hostile" were a bit too much!
