Listener comments!

  11:48am
Matt from Springfield:

Could it be? Could it BE?! It IS!!!

Welcome back Amanda! I missed you, we all missed you!
  11:53am
Carmichael:

Hey Amanda! Just rolled into work to meet the daily disasters that await. You're a rose among the thorns. Let's enjoy some music together with friends!
  11:54am
listener james from westwood:

welcome back to studio c, amanda! awesome to have you back! hope the time away was inspiring and productive.
  11:55am
kat330:

Yay, welcome home, Amanda!! Hi, Matt, Carmichael and James!

[Be back in a few.]
  11:56am
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Carm, you just clearly stated why we love the Scenario!
Hello LJFW!
  12:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi kat!

Let's do this!
  12:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Hazy Shade Of Winter"! Nice arrangement here with this band!
  12:01pm
SteveL:

EEEEEEEE!!!!! Amanda! [ahem]
  12:01pm
SteveL:

Fill-ins were excellent, but hey, they weren't you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm
Amanda:

Hey everybody! I'm glad to be back, and interested to see whether I remember how to do all this stuff after 4 weeks away.
  12:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Robyn Hitchcock, with Egyptians! Yes!
  12:03pm
-S-:

Alright now...Lets get this started!.Yesereebob!
  12:04pm
Philo Gristle:

Hi everybody! Was on the phone with kat when our company phones went on the blitz, so figured I'd drop by here to say hello (and slyly notify kat that I can't call her back). Too bad I can't listen to the show as it's no streaming at the office!
  12:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

Take your time, Amanda. And if you don't remember, it's like meeting a friend all over again! A complex, needy, technical friend in small Studio C...
  12:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi SteveL, S, Philo, all fans!

@Philo: Too bad you can't listen! As pierre says, you're a "non-listener listener" for now.
  12:06pm
listener james from westwood:

should also say your well-chosen guest hosts did the timeslot proud.
  12:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Amanda: Agree with SteveL, all your fill-ins were excellent, but it's THIS vibe of yours that we're so glad to be listening to again!

This is an online stream with a jukebox of songs, so it's actually not necessary to get fill-ins, there's no "dead air" to fill; but I appreciate that you arranged fill-ins for us nonetheless, that's listener service and kindness!
  12:10pm
kat330:

Oh, THERE you are Mr. Gristle! I sent an email suggesting you check the premises for Mr. Krueger or Jason or Chthulhu. :)
  12:11pm
kat330:

OK, in position and properly attentive.

@Amanda: Hope you'll regale us with your month-long creative sojourn at the mic break?!
  12:12pm
Breian in UK:

Hello Amanad & chums. How did the dogs take this hiatus?
  12:12pm
Carmichael:

Dave!
  12:13pm
SteveL:

Please tell us more about children on leashes.
  12:13pm
Philo Gristle:

I think it's just hulking hillbilly savages, republican reapers and corporate ne'er-do-wells in this building. And I'm not even kidding! Nice to recognize all the artists and most of the songs, so I can at least hum them in my head as a non-listener listener. Back to work!
  12:13pm
kat330:

What a bitchin' set of artists so far -- true faves of mine!

Carmichael:

@Braene Boru: I thikn your beykoard's broked.
  12:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

80s Dave Edmunds! Hey, this is a good beat, somewhere between Steve Winwood and 80s Genesis.
  12:16pm
Doug S.:

All good for now. Apparently, I have a "strong bite."
  12:17pm
kat330:

@Brian: All you're missing is an "o" for including every vowel in your handle. ;)
  12:17pm
Brian in UK:

Managed to kick the dog off the keyboard, here is a link to Rockfield Studios that Dave Edmunds helped to make famous with his recordings.

  12:18pm
kat330:

@Doug: Excellent! My turn next week. Now if I can get that FMU transmitter inserted next week, the worry and pain and expense will be worth it.
  12:19pm
Carmichael:

I always hear a little ELO in that Edmunds song. A vastly underrated album, IMO, at least when compared to Repeat When Necessary or Subtle as a Flying Mallet.
  12:20pm
Brian in UK:

Doug, Is your Bach worse?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
Amanda:

@Carmichael -- Edmunds and Jeff Lynne were sometime collaborators, including on that song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
Amanda:

(But I love those other two albums you mention!)
  12:22pm
Brian in UK:

I confess to losing Jeff Lynne after The Idle Race.
  12:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Good Joe Jackson I haven't heard!
  12:25pm

Amanda is in da house! Welcome back!

Our "Pretty Flamingo" returns!
Hi Doug!
  12:30pm
Brian in UK:

Some folks at work used to have a band called Overbite Delight.
  12:31pm
Doug S.:

By "pretty flamingo," I assume you are speaking of me, Matt from Springfield.
  12:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

Dental work can only make flamingos more beautiful. Just don't crack your beak on any nuts!
  12:35pm
Carmichael:

@Brian: That's a long time ago. I have a hard time keeping up with Roy Wood.

@Matt: That's off Jackson's 2nd album, which is every bit as good as the 1st.
  12:40pm
SteveL:

Briefs gitar=YOW!!
  12:44pm
Fiveash:

The J. Geils Band, or, as we call them back home, "Fuckin' Geils".
  12:44pm

One mildly friendly pledge of $25 will jump Amanda's total up to a wonderful 10%. Please be friendly and wonderful and make that pledge!
  12:45pm

This Friday it is fifty years since 'Love Me Do' was released. So.

efd: Did you bring the Rachel Sweet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Amanda:

A short hop from Syracuse (the Penetrators) to Boston (Geils), it turns out.

Ahem, SteveL, this is MY Rachel Sweet all the way...
  12:49pm
Brian in UK:

Oh that poor Rachel travelling around on the train during the Stiff tour with all those reprobates.
  12:50pm
efd:

Yes, Amanda is perfectly capable of bringing her own Rachel Sweet records. :)

p.s. Hi Amanda!

Hey Evan! Welcome back from your birthday sojourn. And happy end of the miserable 2012 Red Sox season.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm

Hi Evan! As I spoke earlier of people who like BOTH pub rock AND ELO, I realized you are one of those people, so it's cool that you checked in.

OMG TEN PERCENT! What a homecoming gift.
  12:59pm

The Records opened for Rachel Sweet on that Stiff tour. That would have been sweeeeeet ....

afternoon Amanda and everyone!

You bet, Carmichael. It was what you might call a second division Stiff (flaccid) tour but The Records stand up.

The modesty is not false, only pre-fabricated ;)
  1:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hiya NDBob!

@Fiveash: "The Fuckin' Geils" can/should be used as a punk band name!

@kat Thanks for the email!

This is like a cross b/w Danielson Famile and Tears for Fears :)
  1:20pm

Is this the Texas band with 10,000 people in brightly coloured robes?

If the Danielson Famile were to perform "Sowing the Seeds of Love", maybe? :)

Danielson Famile is a good name :) Has a lot going for it :)

SteveL:

Great cover.

Split ENZ cover!
And forget Pink Cadillacs, they're the Pink Lincolns!
  1:33pm
Doug S.:

Though WFMU can no longer survive on the contributions raised during our annual spring on-air Marathon, the station STEADFASTLY REFUSES to add more fund drives to our programming schedule. You gotta give it to a public radio station that holds a SILENT fund drive. Just brilliant.

Support the brilliance. Support the silence. Support WFMU.

Please make a conscientious offering using the pledge box, above.

Thank you.
  1:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: That's happened a few times to me since listening to FMU, fortunately nothing too off-the-wall blared into my office! But there was once an extremely close call, 2 mins after a hardcore punk track with very radical lyrics ended, my jack came out during a more innocuous song!
  1:39pm
Fiveash:

A Giant Duty!
  1:43pm
kat330:

@Matt: Yes, a marvelous "I Got You" cover! I was bopping and singing loudly along in the kitchen.
  1:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yet we have amazing fun on this program!
Sweetness and profanity lead the way!
  1:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: It went over quite well on the board!
  1:45pm
Hugo:

That word "famile" is slightly confusing, isn't it? In my language, it is "familie" and in English "family". An intentional typo?
  1:47pm
Danne D:

I like that it ends in an "e" :)
  1:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

I've heard Nora y Delia before on FMU, they are soooo beautiful!
And for the record, there is NO authorized excuse not to play them. (If you just played them, you can get a waiver to go into a song by another artist, but continuing to play Nora y Delia is more than welcome! :)
  1:49pm
Hugo:

Is it pronounced in the same way as family?
  1:52pm

@LJFW: "Baroque Primitiva" kind of describes the feel of it, abstractly.
Think of it as a 300 year old demo!
  1:56pm

I actually planned for this 3-hr. uninterrupted stretch in a crazy-busy week and, wouldn't you know, I have had 3 phone calls and 1 doorbell interruption while stove timers are beeping -- well, I'll just have to hit the archive for the minutes I've missed. :/
  1:56pm
listener james from westwood:

note to self: move conference call to be during another hour! it's cutting into my scenario time!
  1:57pm

take care, ndbob!

kat330:

Belated "bye" Bob!
  2:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: That War on Xmas comp looks great! I'm spreading the love across different shows (yours and Amanda's, not coincidentally!), but expect to at least crack the $100 mark for the station!

As at the Marathon, $75 will get you a DJ premium! And for just $25 more you can receive a WFMU "War on Christmas: A holiday music compilation" CD!
  2:01pm
Danne D:

I liked that Se Decidi Cosi :)
  2:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

*Italian* Motown, that's a new one! And Italian Jimmy Ruffin too!
+8 on Obscurity Index!
  2:03pm
kat330:

I did, too, Danne.
  2:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: It's impossible for office rats like me to listen 3 hrs uninterrupted. Just hafta go with the flow, and when you have time for an Archive but not for a whole show, catch up on the minutes-and-seconds you missed!
  2:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

(201) 569-5170!
The Rev. Solomon Burke, digs his eggs on the Jersey side!

kat330:

The king!

I know, Matt, just that my best-laid plans -- rats.

Never heard Solomon Burke's mid 70s stuff, it seems he took on a more Barry White style to keep up with the times.

kat330:

Amanda, Doug & Tony have "heard" the drill (and Charlie will tomorrow I s'pose), but Philo and I will be renewing our Mouse pledge in December (post-P.'s bonus time). You will be designated a chunk of that change -- promise!
  2:10pm
Hugo:

The mouse pledge lasts for 10 months, right?
  2:15pm
Doug S.:

@Hugo
Yes. I believe the full Mouse of Today pledge level, when paid monthly, is debited in 10 equal installments.
  2:15pm
Brian in UK:

Bye the bye James, belated congrats on TWENTY years.

6345789 that's my number.
  2:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

One Fine fill-in for Finewine!
J.J. Jackson is great!
  2:16pm
kat330:

@Hugo: AFAIK, 365 days! :) We happened to pledge right after I received estate administration funds last year. This year it will be after an annual bonus. If we donate to all the many worthy causes we do the moment there's any extra money in the bank, we can't have any excuse down the road. :)

We paid in full and will again, another method of "no return" or reneges.
  2:16pm
Brian in UK:

Think that is Wilson Pickett.
  2:17pm
SteveL:

Cheesecake-aly!
  2:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sugarloaf's "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You" from '74 doesn't *say* a number, but it dials one. At the time you could hold a touch-tone phone up to the song and it would dial that unlisted record label number for you!
  2:20pm
Brian in UK:

Amanda, looks like you are getting in practice for Singles Going Steady.
  2:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

"The song "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You" is notable because it contained a practical joke at the expense of CBS Records, which had just turned them down for a recording contract. The song includes the sound of a touch-tone telephone number being dialed near the beginning and ending of the song. Those numbers were an unlisted phone number at CBS Records and a public number at the White House respectively."
  2:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

@SteveL: Like the "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" song with "We get along - swimming-ly!"
Replace with "Looking nice - cheesecake-aly!"
  2:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ahhhh. We should all reflect together more often.
  2:27pm
kat330:

I guess Chuck Berry in Memphis Tennessee and Dan's Rikki never reveal a phone number.
  2:28pm
listener james from westwood:

thanks, brian! year 21's treating me nicely so far!
  2:28pm
Danne D:

Sorry Again :)
  2:28pm
Mike VL:

Welcome back, Amanda!
  2:28pm
Hugo:

@kat330: You're right. I checked the pledge page. It's spread across 12 months, which makes sense, I guess. That way the station is assured of regular income over the entire year. Still, it can be topped up, of course ...

I very much liked getting the the 1gb memory stick with all that FMA stuff. I suppose I can't use it for anything else :-)
  2:28pm
Danne D:

I bought this cd at a Towers Records after listening for a little bit in a listener station thingy.

kat330:

I remember this as it sounded coming out of a Radio Shack poodle transistor radio.
  2:33pm
Hugo:

Gosh! Mid-sixties Radio Luxembourg, if you ask me.
  2:33pm
kat330:

Me, too, Carmichael.
  2:34pm
kat330:

Holy moly, another from deep in aural memory.
  2:35pm
Danne D:

I ain't sayin' she's a gold digger...
  2:35pm
kat330:

77 Sunset Strip.
  2:36pm
Danne D:

Arf Arf Arf Arf
  2:37pm
Fiveash:

This is best one. Pay close attention and hear Slim Gaillard say "Bobo"...
  2:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Let's drink espresso in a cave that's not so spoooky"!!

"Edd Byrnes (born July 30, 1933) is an American actor known for his starring role in the television series 77 Sunset Strip. He also was featured in the 1978 film Grease as television teen-dance show host, Vince Fontaine, and a single-charted recording artist with "Kookie, Kookie -- Lend Me Your Comb" (with Connie Stevens)." THAT'S why the woman sounded familiar!
  2:37pm
Carmichael:

Yes Hugo, I heard it from Luxembourg via a transistor. Great station, that.
  2:37pm
kat330:

Now, Amanda, if you have a song about Radio Shack, that will be most remarkable. ;)
  2:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Slim Gaillard!
Gaylord Fields actually performed "The Barking Beatles" at a H&M show!
  2:39pm
Fiveash:

This is other best one.
  2:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

"APEMAN"!!! Your last set is ON FIRE, Amanda! :-D
  2:40pm
Carmichael:

Oh my. I bought this original Kinks 45 when it came out. That's how old I am. From the 1st Tower Records store.
  2:40pm
listener james from westwood:

w00t! profanity ahead!!
  2:40pm
kat330:

Back in the '60s, many AM stations were good stations by today's standards. WAKY in Lullville played Motown followed by Dean Martin followed by the Beatles followed by Jimi Hendrix. Those were the days.
  2:40pm
Danne D:

Yup M_f_S I remember that well :) Gaylord was great :)
  2:42pm
kat330:

@Carmichael: I'm pretty certain the first 45 I bought on my own was the Kinks' "All the Day..." or "I'm So Tired" if that wasn't the B side to the former.

Amanda:

Well anticipated, Listener James!
  2:43pm
Carmichael:

John Gosling plays piano on this Kinks song, the self-described "world's worst piano player". He shows off his skills on Ducks on the Wall.
  2:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: The 60s Top 40 was all over the place--and those variety shows! Individual items were often not great, but truely stellar performances from new rock bands were interspersed among them. You could have had Kate Smith, immediately followed by Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd in those days! :)
  2:47pm
kat330:

If you could learn to tune out the commercials and the awful DJ patter, it was almost the spectrum we've come to love at FMU.
  2:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Kinks first "hit" 45 was "You Really Got Me", Aug 1964. Next was "All Day And All Of The Night" in Oct, and "Tired Of Waiting For You" in Jan '65, so you got the era narrowed down.
  2:49pm
Danne D:

That Shangri-Las song reminded me of Snoopy and the Red Baron :)
  2:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

Type of the Devil....!
  2:49pm
Carmichael:

If they are available in the US, go back and view the Old Grey Whistle Test show. Wonderful mish-mash of artists that would never happen today. Also, to a lesser extent Ready Steady Go or the TAMI shows.
  2:49pm
Fiveash:

This song is freaking Skeeter out!
  2:49pm
kat330:

I'm pretty sure Tired of Waiting for You was on the flip of All Day and All... -- I think I played that more often than the bigger A-side hit. But then, I tended to like the unheralded George Harrison tracks, few as they were, on the early Beatles' albums.

If you are on a sixties kick, here's an option:

Carmichael:

Jesus H. Christ on a crutch! Just when I thought I heard every possible Beatles parody, you pull this out. Well played, ma'am.
  2:51pm
kat330:

If I've said it once I've said it twice: I'm a contrarian. I pledge to FMU in December. :)
  2:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Amanda, quick thinking request!

Glad to have you back, Amanda, great set as per usual!

Yes, the Whistle Test was pretty good. I have a double dvd of many of the artists on that show. Bob Harris, who was the initial host, has a country show on BBC Radio 2.
  2:55pm
Carmichael:

Thanks for everything Amanda, and glad to have you back again.
  2:55pm
