Listener comments!

  3:02pm
Mike East:

holy crap! Its marco benevento day! Huzzah!
  3:03pm
Stanley:

(Switching channels) What's going on over here?

Oh I see......
  3:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Marco B! Today's the day!
Wow, and he electricked up an acoustic piano!
  3:04pm
Listening Out There:

...it's sorta like Christmas, eh? Does that mean the election is done? Please...
  3:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Mike! Glad to see others as enthused about it as I am!
  3:08pm
Mike East:

Hey Matt. MB has really grown on me in the past months that Irwins been playing him. Heard him first on npr, and thought he was ok, but the stuff our honorable deejay has been playing has really impressed me.
  3:12pm
green mountain man mark:

I am in the car and my wife is bringing me to the hospital. Lost it. Comfort for a few minutes as we go. Listening to Irwin. She stops for gas. Son if a bitch. I just want to get there and get what I need. Looks like one if the things that keep me in reality is WFMU. I have finally it. To the entertainment of ymany except me. I will be back!
  3:14pm
Mike East:

good luck, mark.
  3:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

Visions of Joanna! I look forward to it.
  3:18pm
northguineahills:

Feels a better, gmmm!
  3:22pm
duke:

Get better quickly mark.
  3:24pm
Joe Bacon:

Take care, Mark! I know the feeling since I have to go to the hospital tomorrow for tests :-(
  3:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Oh, here's the "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)" song. I first heard about it on these boards but haven't heard it. Written by Goffin-King after asking why their babysitter (Little Eva) stayed with her abusive boyfriend.

"Tomorrow Never Knows" sped-up laughter effect! A sample, even!
  3:25pm
Caryn:

Man, Kramer is getting airplay today.
  3:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, get better quickly everyone!
Mark, Joe, kat is going under the dentist's drill tomorrow...
  3:27pm
Kim:

oh yay, better beatles!!
  3:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

How No Wave of this group! If you're going to call yourself "the Better Beatles" you'd need to do something offbeat or ironic. "Mercy Beat"!
  3:27pm
Denise in DC:

Hope everything's okay, Mark!
  3:28pm
Alison Porchnik:

Beatles in double-dutch
  3:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

Man, why can't "Don't Worry Carmen" BE the EAS tones?
  3:30pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Should I pretend there is an emergency? I can pretend to panic and pretend to drink the bottled water I have in the basement in case of an emergency.
  3:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

SLADE!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3:31pm
Cheri Pi:

WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
  3:31pm
Caryn:

Hey, as long as the panic doesn't extend to cannibalism and looting, go nuts!
  3:31pm
Denise in DC:

Are you pretending you have a basement?
  3:32pm
Stanley:

In case of an emergency, play Slade
Alright, alright, alright alright
  3:32pm
Denise in DC:

Caryn, you're such a party-pooper.
  3:32pm
Michael:

Hiya Irwin! One of our driving to high school tunes -
  3:33pm
Stanley:

Spits on me cos' she knows that she can
  3:34pm
Caryn:

@Denise: okay okay, cannibalism and looting are okay. Heck, it's not as if I live anywhere in the neighbourhood. Although I'd recommend those faux-human meat hors d'oeuvres rather than actual cannibalism just to minimise the mess.
  3:36pm
green mountain man mark:

We are at the health center now. My wife is inside. I want them to get me and bring me in a side door. So I don't need to sit there and wait until the end with everyone else. This is an emergency. I will keep you posted a psychotic break down is not fun. But can also be very entertaining.
  3:38pm
Denise in DC:

Entertaining for you, Mark, or for everyone else?
  3:39pm
Denise in DC:

Oh, dear. Before I looked at the playlist, I heard Nina Simone's voice and thought it was Eric Clapton.
  3:39pm
Yossarian:

Mark - take care of yourself and forget posting on some board.
  3:39pm
Joe Bacon:

Ouch, Matt! I've been under the dentist drill getting the Jack Nicholson treatment a la Little Shop Of Horrors. At least my dentist doesn't have Pain Magazine in the waiting room!
  3:40pm
green mountain man mark:

I have lost it and they are coming to get me. To take me away. I am for some reason sitting here waiting in our car for them. And listening to Irwin's show. A comfort.
  3:40pm
Caryn:

I guess if the breakdown includes uncontrollable giggling fits and interesting hallucinations, it can be entertaining. My psychosis during college was okay, apart from the constant suicidal thoughts.
  3:45pm
green mountain man mark:

Wife came back and said they are going to come get me. Just sit here and listen to Irwin. I had to get my wallet out and give her my insurance card and photo ID. I was able to do that.
  3:46pm
Denise in DC:

Hang in there, Mark -- you'll be taken care of soon.
  3:50pm
green mountain man mark:

Urs
  3:51pm
northguineahills:

All, this is the Lyman the Kid Koala sampled.
  3:53pm
AnAnonymousParty:

The Emergency Alert test is kinda like a tea party with my daughter, when she was young enough to do pretend tea parties, anyway.
  3:53pm
AnAnonymousParty:

And, for the record, I DO have a basement.
  3:54pm
green mountain man mark:

This is totally the theme as they take me away. I don't think it is funny. Anymore. Or do I?! Of course I do'! This is hilarious.
  3:54pm
das:

Hi, I missed the part about 'he used to play with Ween.'
Who dat?
  3:55pm
Listening Out There:

...guess the Penguin Cafe Orchestra are touring again. So I read on the internets...
  3:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: That's a masochist clientele of patients!
  3:55pm
Kim:

and Penguin Cafe Orchestra!!! truly an alltime favorite.
  4:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ready for MB!!!
  4:02pm
das:

@me: Dave Dreiwitz, dumbass
  4:04pm
Denise in DC:

@das: I am offended by the abusive language you use with yourself. Please apologize to yourself and promise yourself you won't do it again.
  4:08pm
das:

hear the way he talks to me?!?
  4:10pm
Jeff:

Some photos from this Marco Benevento visit are here:

...and the 14 following, via the "Next->" button or your keyboard's right arrow.
  4:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

@das: Does one of your personalities feel like sitting in the corner??
  4:11pm
fxo:

so far, so spectacular!
  4:13pm
das:

Haha.
I have another dumb question, what are the pedals plugged into?
  4:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

Joanna the Piaña! Train cars-and-bars, that explains the shorter 61-key length.

Flickr fotos! Thanks Jeff. Helpfully in the "WFMUish" group as well, a place where *YOU*, that's right, all you can find a wide variety of great WFMU-related pics.
  4:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Jeff: Also, nice photo through the glass panel. No glare and little reflection!
  4:14pm
jan:

It's a Wurlitzer! Great show.
  4:15pm
Jeff:

Thanks, Matt! I do my best.
  4:16pm
northguineahills:

Found someone online w/ the same piano who might be willing to part w/ one.

VCS-3 was the synth Pink FLoyd used for On the Run on Dark Side of the Moon.
  4:18pm

"Fireworks"! Great one.

  4:22pm
hamburger:

wow!
  4:22pm
AnAnonymousParty:

That reminds me of "Crime of the Century" in places.
  4:24pm
Jeff:

"Fireworks" was kind of like Ravel's La Valse and some of those underwater-sounding Ferrante and Teicher prepared-piano pieces, all stirred up in a pot with Benevento's energy and special electronic sauce.
  4:28pm
hamburger:

that intro / main loop is from Ravel?
  4:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ravel, interesting. It has that familiar kind of classical feel, something a bit familiar.
  4:30pm
Irwin:

Thank you JAN S., for the pledge (and the long-running support). Can anyone else toss us a few bucks? Small pledges of support are welcome. Hit the tip jar widget at the top of the page.
  4:31pm
Jeff:

Oh, I doubt it - I was talking more about energy and almost-overbearing rhythmic patterns than actual melody.
  4:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Oh, I remember this medley now! The "Citay sounding" riff at the beginning I have since realized is Pink Floyd's "San Tropez". A lovely song in its own right.
  4:35pm
Joe Bacon:

Glad to toss some $$$ into the kitty for you, Irwin!
  4:37pm
Irwin:

Thank you Joe for feeding the kitty. Can anyone else get me above the 1/3 mark? I have self-esteem issues. Thx.
  4:40pm
Irwin:

For a modest pledge (any amount), I will refrain from snark for the next 20 minutes. Promise.
  4:40pm
other david:

will be donating later in this month, promise.
  4:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ah, thanks anyhow Jeff.

Speaking of melody, how bout calling this "Hello, It's R-I-S-D"
  4:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, it's a remix of the bed music!
  4:41pm
Jeff:

Pleeze throw a couple more bucks in, kids! Nobody wants a whiny Irwin moping around, believe you me.
  4:41pm
Alison Porchnik:

I want pancakes for my pledge.
  4:42pm
Listening Out There:

I'll have a few cookies with my pledge, please....
  4:42pm
Denise in DC:

Silent fundraiser, eh? Sure, I'll pitch in, for Irwin's sake.
  4:43pm
other david:

Well, some of us like our Irwin a little snarky.
  4:44pm
Irwin:

I'll do anything to raise money for the station. Except agree with Ike.
  4:44pm
jan:

The alternate version of RISD is refreshing, having heard the original so many times on your program and at home.
  4:44pm
G:

The man has standards.
  4:45pm
Listening Out There:

Irwin is the snarkiest DJ on this program
  4:45pm
Listening Out There:

:)
  4:46pm
Alison Porchnik:

If you overnight the pancakes to me they won't get soggy. But I want real maple syrup, not that deadly poison with the Splenda.
  4:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

There's our fundraising plan! At the Record Fair, instead of a kissing booth, have a "contrarian booth" with Irwin! Pay a few bucks to have Irwin disagree with you for two minutes!
  4:51pm
Irwin:

@AP: I make you pancakes with radishes and bits of chunky stuff scraped from cheese bin.
  4:51pm
Joe Bacon:

Skidoo! The only movie that has Jackie Gleason go on an LSD trip and hallucinate that Groucho Marx is a giant screw!
  4:52pm
Alison Porchnik:

@Matt: take your pick from a handy list of topics including Obama, global warming, socialized medicine, and Ella Fitzgerald.
  4:52pm
hamburger:

man - really wanna know the name of that piece that fireworks intro / melody sounds like
  4:52pm
Alison Porchnik:

@Irwin: I'm lactose intolerant. Everyone on this board knows that.
  4:52pm
Mike East:

dangit! I missed half that set because the tech dept. is a bunch of lazy slackers! Curse you, tech dept!!!! (shakes fist)
  4:53pm
Alec:

I'll take Ella for $200
  4:55pm
Caryn:

Can I just have a Monty Pythonesque argument with Irwin about whether we are actually having an argument?
  4:56pm
Laura L:

You really must see Skidoo--it is a movie that is so bad, it is bad.
  4:57pm
Irwin:

LL: Wayne Barker was raving about the movie to me recently, hence my interest.
  4:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Caryn!
Maybe not at the "contrarian booth", but certainly at Irwin's professional practice, his "argument clinic"!
  5:00pm
Laura L:

It is just atrocious--required viewing.
  5:00pm
hamburger:

the wall is on the writing? hmmm
  5:03pm
G:

He's at 36% of goal, over a third. But could he really survive a full hour of no-snark, both on-mic and on-board, while also avoiding apoplexy?
  5:06pm
Joe Bacon:

The immortal sequence in Skidoo when Jackie Gleason meets LSD!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7-RNNIbPP0
  5:11pm
Denise in DC:

Joe, you have made my day. Thanks.
  5:12pm
Joe Bacon:

Denise, I'm involved with the RAZZIE Awards, and I can assure you that if we had the RAZZIES back in the 60s, Skidoo would have swept them!
  5:16pm
Caryn:

Wow, the French-language version! Only heard it in English until now.
  5:24pm
Mr Lowry:

Wow. I hate Prince even when Irwin plays him.
  5:27pm
Irwin:

Thanks to Denise in DC, Allison Porchnik, and Brian B for pledges in the past hour. Silent fundraiser. NO ON-AIR BLATHER! Hit the tip-jar at the top of the page. We're trying to cover our budget shortfall before the end of the year as painlessly as possible. Thanks, all you cultural misfits.
  5:29pm
Irwin:

BTW, the title of this Milton Arias piece, translated from Spanish, is "Two Gatos." Meow!
  5:29pm
Alison Porchnik:

That would be Spanglish.
  5:30pm
Irwin:

No need to gracias me.
  5:32pm
Joe Bacon:

I'm going to go ahead and put a WFMU link on my Facebook page. Hope that helps!
  5:32pm
Alison Porchnik:

Quieres you?
  5:33pm
Irwin:

Thanks, Joe. You can link the URL at the top of my playlist page.
  5:34pm
Caryn:

@Irwin: that reminds me of the two girls on the street talking about Gato Negro wine. One of them said to the other: "You know, the name means 'black cat'. (pause) So I think 'negro' means cat?" D'oh!
  5:36pm
Alison Porchnik:

Moi, yo quiero pfannkuchen.
  5:38pm
Joe Bacon:

Irwin, it's done!
  5:39pm
Irwin:

@AP: We stop serving at 2:30. Please order at our takeout window.
  5:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Awesome, I love the Razzies! Sometimes actors show up in person to accept them too!
  5:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

Audio Rorschach tests!
"What does this white noise sound like to you?"
  5:52pm
Joe Bacon:

Matt, I loved when Robert Conrad came to accept the Razzies for Wild Wild West. He tore BERRY Sonenfeld to pieces! We also had Halle Berry and Sandra Bullock show up in person. Russell Peters also came by to accept for M. Night Shamalayawhatshisname!
  5:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

Fun times at the Razzies!!
  5:54pm
Joe Bacon:

But NOBODY has duplicated the feat of Adam Sandler's Jack and Jill, sweeping EVERY RAZZUE!
  5:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

Also want to add my thank you to Marco Benevento for his wonderful performance!
Thanks to Drew! Ernie Indradat, working him hard this month! Joanna the Pianna! Irwin! And of course, WFMU! All of you made that great set possible!
  5:57pm
northguineahills:

This Nheap is superb!
  5:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Su-poib, NGH! A great meditation, AND avail at the FMA!

Have a great evening everyone!
  3:36pm
Droll:

Great Marco set, the videos of him playing are the best because you see this guy at his modified piano working so hard to realize the sound in his head. He really knows what he's doing and why, it's beautiful to see.

That whole set including the interviews was barely 45 minutes -- I'm looking forward to the second part on next week's show!
  6:23pm
mb:

Finally! The Marco show!
