Listener comments!

  3:02pm
G:

This is from Lee Morgan's little-known funk era.
  3:03pm
Economy:

Irwin tried to stand in the way of regression, and was unable to halt its progression. This time.
  3:05pm
G:

I used to live two blocks from where this picture was taken, about 18 months after I moved there. For the akasic record.
  3:05pm
Ike:

Kill you now? No, no. Don't worry. Your local friendly Obamacare Death Panel has determined that you may live for another year. Check back with us in 2013 when you will again be eligible for termination in one of our clean, comfortable Stop-and-Drop Suicide Booths.
  3:06pm
βrian:

Hey, it's that blood orange skin again.
  3:07pm
IPAB:

You'll get yours, Ike. Bureaucracy this large takes some rollout time.
  3:07pm
Laura L:

"Save the planet, kill yourself!"
  3:07pm
Todd 76%:

Was that Nickollonia the Bard just before Lee Morgan?
  3:13pm
Alison Porchnik:

Snow is sticking here. Does Lee Morgan play anything snowy-sounding?
  3:14pm
G:

@AP: It's Xmas-Comes-Early in BK, too.
  3:14pm
Vince Guaraldi:

I'll be out back if you need me for something snowy.

Yeah, corporations are people, too.
  3:15pm
Alison Porchnik:

Glad to hear I have that to come home to later.
  3:15pm
rrg:

I'm so weary of this winter.
  3:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ike: But Irwin's atheist--I thought only Christians and God-fearers were slated for "voluntary relinquishment of scarce health resources"???

Hi Irwin and pals!
  3:16pm
Willard:

Yeah, uh, Monday was really the day to spin "I'm Dreaming of a White Election Day," from "Holiday Inn"...
  3:18pm
Laura L:

Verizon apparently just discovered there was a hurricane last week. They just sent me an email: Dear Valued Verizon Wireless Customer:

Cheer up Willard, you've helped to take Mormons in America forward--you're their Al Smith!
  3:19pm
rrg:

How about we all shut the fuck up about politics now?
  3:20pm
G:

I got that too, Laura -- highlighted as urgent, 3:13 EST.
  3:20pm
Van in DC:

@rrg - * applause *
  3:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: You're right, politics just bring people down.
Let's talk Hurricane damage instead!!
  3:22pm
Mother Nature:

Actually, Rain and Wind is my department. Now if you get hordes of locusts . . .
  3:22pm
Alison Porchnik:

@Laura, Thanks for reminding us that we are all considered members of the Verizon family. Doesn't it make you feel loved?
  3:22pm
Salt-n-Pepa:

@Matt and rrg: Lets talk about sex bay-bee

This one goes to 11.

I'm clappin'. I always do when it comes to user engineering...
  3:34pm
Irwin:

Pity pledge anyone? (*sob*)
  3:35pm
Alison Porchnik:

Asera is everywhere! - just like the Jews! (I can say that because I'm Jewish.)

@Alison, if you're everywhere, can you tell me if the snow is sticking in Newark? Activate the conspiracy for my weather info!
  3:38pm
Alison Porchnik:

@Ike, My underground cabal tells me "all signs point to yes."
  3:42pm
Listening Out There:

The Arthur Brown of "The Incredible World of Arthur Brown"? Inquiring minds want to know...
  3:42pm
Caryn:

Alison, I think I've cracked the code on the identity of your cabal members. I'm guessing there's one member, and he is small, black, magic, and you need to shake him to get answers out of him.
  3:44pm
Alison Porchnik:

Caryn, that's Amos, my cat
  3:45pm
Caryn:

@Alison: hah! Okay, so he's a mostly silent member.
  3:45pm
Listening Out There:

ah. wait. no. It's the "Crazy World of..." I think I had the LP years back. Colorful cover, big face....?
  3:47pm
Listening Out There:

Irwin sounds better today, compared to last week. Must be a better mic...
  3:47pm
Alison Porchnik:

Irwin, you're coming awfully close to blasphemy.
  3:47pm
bobo:

sorry for your loss irwin
  3:52pm
Caryn:

As an outsider, I'll try to lighten you up, Irwin. Hey, look at it this way: It would be more upsetting to lose an election if you had had a better candidate. But Mitt losing? Come on, he couldn't have been your first choice. Heck, I can't think of a single Republican who was whole-heartedly pro-Romney when he became the nominee. In that sense, you are an election winner, Irwin!
  3:56pm
Laura L:

Ken Freedman was right this morning--George W. was a comedy goldmine, these politicians today are just not funny.
  4:02pm
Pundit:

Mitt tried to channel Reagan for the last month of the campaign. Looking at his record, one can't assume that was really in the cards at all.

The election wasn't about candidate persuasiveness or personality. No candidate got any Dems to go Rep or vice versa in any significant numbers. So it was all about turnout. It was about Obama keeping his 2008 turnout from dropping any more than it did (he got ~10 million fewer votes yesterday than last time).

I heard from someone living in East New York that she had to wait four hours to vote yesterday. They were not about to have their guy humiliated if they could help it.
  4:08pm
Ike:

Nice Patty Griffin track. I might have to check out that album.
  4:09pm
G:

My Bogen CD came in the mail yesterday.
  4:10pm
G:

lo siento, Bogan
  4:11pm
rrg:

Damn. No archive of last week's show, which I could not listen to because I was powerless. Which i still am. But enough about me.
  4:12pm
rrg:

This is an accordion. I know that much.
  4:13pm
G:

d'accordion
  4:14pm
Irwin:

RRG: No, no -- go on! Please. Tell me what you think about my show.
  4:16pm
TDK60:

Incredible that band of strings.
  4:17pm
rrg:

I love the inappropriate use of a sitar.
  4:18pm
giselle:

that's so Tull-esque
  4:20pm
Steve Howe:

moi aussi, rrg
  4:27pm
Laura L:

Clearly this is the work of a child who entered that doorway in Lisa's photo.
  4:28pm
djelrock:

So Irwin, u really thought that Romney was going to look out for you? Two words: Bain Capital. One number: 47. Id lov to hear why u r dissapponted with the election results.
  4:28pm
djelrock:

So Irwin, u really thought that Romney was going to look out for you? Two words: Bain Capital. One number: 47. Id lov to hear why u r dissapponted with the election results.
  4:29pm
Non-partisan fan:

Great show as always. I also mourn my now-forever-lost opportunity to hear last week's show.
  4:30pm
Editor:

@elrock: I'm disappointed to see you are a grown-up who can't minimally spell, and still expect me to take you seriously :)
  4:33pm
Irwin:

Donations to our disaster relief fund please please please?
  4:38pm
rrg:

Irwin, you should recreate the lost show. Just do it again with the same playlist. Ask Duane to give up 90 minutes of his show. He won't mind. Ask him.
  4:38pm
G:

My industry (it's not finance) is heavily fed-regulated. I'll try to later this month. Gotta think about what the election means for my disposable income during the next few years. My annual income is half what it was three years ago. But I'm also doing intake at a new part-time place. Must... think...
  4:38pm
fashion:

Sspups, for real? I suggest everyone YouTube the music video of this song, the emo bangs on the drummer are out of control!
  4:39pm
Carmichael:

Keep on baiting your listeners, Irwin. Bait away!
  4:40pm
G:

@Carmichael: Masterbaitorium?
  4:40pm
Caryn:

@rrg: yeah, but Irwin can't play the stuff he played then, because the FCC will pounce if he does. However, if this next storm should turn WFMU into online-only again, a redo could work.
  4:40pm
Caryn:

But let's face it, we don't want the storm to affect WFMU, so... no redo likely.
  4:42pm
Carmichael:

@Caryn: for being in one of those bleak Nordic countries, you now a hell of a lot about US culture and politics. Are you an ex-pat, or just a Yankophile?
  4:42pm
seang:

This is it
  4:43pm
rrg:

I would accept a re-do that added bleeps. That would be fine.
  4:44pm
Caryn:

@Carmichael: well, I suppose you could call me a Yankophile, but mainly I'm a film & tv freak, and learn a lot that way. Of course, I also minored in North American Studies at university.
  4:45pm
rick from SC:

Did he just mention Wetsons?
  4:48pm
AnAnonymousParty:

It's comforting to know the world can't end if the power is out. How nice of the world to wait for favorable conditions.
  4:49pm
EAS:

Please place your heads between your legs and kiss your asses goodbye.

Thank you. That is all.
  4:50pm
Carmichael:

OK Caryn, just wondering. I came here just before the Summer of Love, and was hooked.
  4:51pm
fashion:

How did the colonists survive? Beer.
  4:53pm
Caryn:

@Carmichael: where did you come from?

I should say I have visited the US once, but that was for just a week and a half. Enjoyed it thoroughly, and would certainly like to visit again. (Especially at Record Fair time)
  4:55pm
Carmichael:

The south of Ireland. Well, my parents moved here, so I did too.
  4:57pm
Caryn:

@Carmichael: ooh, cool. I'm definitely an eirephile. (That was my other minor: British and Irish Studies.)
  5:00pm
Carmichael:

2nd Marshall Crenshaw of the day. Amanda played his acoustic version of Walk Away Renee.
  5:00pm
rrg:

My Anglophilia is so wide that it embraces Coronation Street. Is fueled by it, in fact.
  5:03pm
Caryn:

@rrg: Corry never interested me too much, apart from that brief period when Ian McKellen was on it.
  5:05pm
rrg:

It's an acquired taste. But one that I share with 20 million people. Probably more.
  5:07pm
Caryn:

Yeah, well, it is certainly preferable to Hollyoaks. I just could never get into the daily shows (Eastenders, Corry, Emmerdale, The Bill, etc.), but know plenty of people who follow them religiously.
  5:09pm
rrg:

Corrie's the only one that I follow. And I'm nowhere near the British Isles. But I have a supplier.
  5:09pm
America:

Obaaaaamaaaaaaaa! (hi, matt)
  5:11pm
Europe:

Soon you can be an economic basket case LIKE US!
  5:13pm
America:

True dat, Europa. The equal distribution of misery, here we come!
  5:14pm
Real America:

I did not write the last entry. Europe did. Cheap shot.
  5:18pm
rrg:

I like that Mr. Cohen.
  5:19pm
kathleen in chicago:

I love jazz too. William Parker is gracing my city again this weekend and he's playing at the Hideout. That's going to be great!
  5:22pm
Carmichael:

Cat's riffin'.
  5:22pm
ABC Impulse:

Kathleen, ever go to the Green Mill? I was just remembering a young sax player named Frank Catalano who plays there a lot. Really good. Anyway ... cheers.
  5:23pm
Denise in DC:

British TV I watch consists largely of Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Monty Python.

Not that anyone asked.
  5:24pm
ABC Impulse:

All I know is ... that Downton Abbey is fantastic. Can't wait for Season III.
  5:24pm
Caryn:

@Denise: those are definitely on my list as well.
  5:26pm
rrg:

I have something to gloat about, then. I already have Season 3 of Downton Abbey in hand from my supplier. I've watched six of eight and will watch the final two when I get power back.
  5:27pm
Carmichael:

Denise, I love Python and Basil Fawlty & Co. And now for something completely different: I'm also a huge Root Boy Slim fan.
  5:27pm
Caryn:

Season 3 started here last night.
  5:28pm
ABC Impulse:

Wow rrg. Jealous. Pretty good, isn't it? Wondering how Bates gets out of jail. No spoilers please. And Thomas ... what a cad.
  5:28pm
rrg:

It just finished in the UK. Blu-Ray is already available, too. Better to watch it that way.
  5:29pm
kathleen in chicago:

ABC: Quite a bit! I love to go on Mondays when Patricia Barber plays with her band.
  5:29pm
kathleen in chicago:

Green Mill is a real cultural gem.
  5:30pm
ABC Impulse:

Also anticipating Game of Thrones. God, I sound so boring. Those are the only two I watch.

@Kathleen - I've never been. Used to hear about it when I lived in Milwaukee.
  5:30pm
The Log Lady:

Can anyone tell me if Irwin has sent the EAS test yet? If he hasn't, everyone please clamor for it!
  5:31pm
rrg:

Hey, this isn't the same Metric album that you've been playing before now.
  5:31pm
Caryn:

Further additions to my list: Blake's 7, Spaced, Fawlty Towers, Green Wing, Coupling, House of Cards, Edge of Darkness, Father Ted, Big Train, The IT Crowd, The Prisoner, The Avengers, basically anything by Chris Morris, etc. etc. Oh, and I have an obsession with British panel shows.
  5:31pm
kathleen in chicago:

I didn't realize Downton Abbey season 3 - the whole thing! has been on thepiratebay for weeks already! I'm going to have to stop myself from watching the whole thin g in one marathon session.
  5:32pm
rrg:

The squawks have already aired this week.
  5:33pm
Irwin:

rrg: I'd overlooked the new Metric release. Discovered recently.
  5:33pm
ABC Impulse:

I miss Ballykiss Angel.
  5:33pm
ABC Impulse:

And Mrs. Bucket. Brits have great comedy shows.
  5:35pm
ABC Impulse:

Also liked that reality show about veterinarians in England. OK I'm done posting. Sorry to be an AccuHogg.
  5:37pm
Carmichael:

Father Ted! And I used to watch Lenny Henry and Chef.
  5:37pm
EAS:

@Logina: I was in the middle of bed music a little after 4:45
  5:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

BLERG!!!! Internet outage at work, finally got a connection back.
Looks like I missed a good show: Mekons, Kramer, BLOSSOM DEARIE! Claire Judice! Oh well, TGF Archives!
  5:39pm
Caryn:

And Black Books, Red Dwarf, Queer as Folk, Ultraviolet, Survivors, Sapphire & Steel, The League of Gentlemen,... Man, I like a lot of shows.
  5:40pm
rrg:

Yeah, Matt, THIS show will be in the archives, but, you know, some of them aren't.
  5:40pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I love Black Books.
  5:40pm
Mandate:

League of Gentlemen. Is that where Fripp got the name?
  5:40pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Britta's Empire is another one I thoroughly enjoyed
  5:41pm
rrg:

This is all well and good, but, you know, American television is much better.

I'm just sayin'.
  5:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

@rrg; Hope you enjoyed the cursing WFMU In Exile, that's off the grid! :)

@ABC Impulse: Are you *Dunhill* ABC Impulse by any chance? :)
  5:42pm
Caryn:

@Mandate: nope, but I think both are based on the same expression.

@Andrew Waterloo: ditto.
  5:43pm
Ike:

There's a new season of Red Dwarf on in the UK now! I'm guessing we'll never get it in the U.S. via legit means.
  5:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

Also, for those who remember "Asera Everywhere" back there, here is the article I once read that mentioned it, was going to post:
http://tinyurl.com/a4nn8qf
  5:43pm
rrg:

Legit, schmegit.
  5:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

"It's an oddly DIY ethic echoed by Asera's programme manager, Phillip Scarborough, writer and performer of both Asera Everywhere and Asera Leads The Way, who doesn't sound nearly so soulless talking from his San Francisco crib. "Basically, I've always loved writing music, and my CEO asked if I'd do something for the firm. So I ended up with five potential anthems, met the board with my boombox, and they were just blown away." "
  5:44pm
Caryn:

@Ike: well, some local stations show "Red Dwarf", and BBC America has shown it, I think. So there's a shot.
  5:45pm
tomasz.:

being from the UK, i pretty much only watch US TV, except the stuff i need to watch for my job
  5:45pm
Mandate:

@Matt - I like almost anything on ABC Dunhill and Impulse. From 3 Dog Night to Pharoah Sanders.

@large - I miss that show where the old guy carried miniature, live-action historical scenes around in his briefcase.
  5:47pm
rrg:

@tomasz.: In my experience, most Brits and Europeans (and Canadians, if they're honest about it) prefer American TV.
  5:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: Ah, I see above you were without power last week. Sorry to hear that.
  5:48pm
Mandate:

I on my 9th Hydrox.
  5:49pm
Bathroom Scale:

@Mandate: OHHHHHHH NOEZZZZZZZZZ

I actually spent a half-hour in the aisle at Hinky-Dinky deciding between Hydrox and Oreos.

There was a typo I didn't notice?! And now I don't know where it was! Could you email me a screenshot of the original typo so I can compare with the present, and know I'm safe? Thanks.
  5:51pm
Cynic:

Sounds like Election Day, Mandate
  5:52pm
rrg:

I think "Escape From Society" should be "Escape from Society".

It's a gray area, I'll grant you.
  5:52pm
Ike:

@Caryn, I've never seen it on BBC America. Maybe in the past. Not sure local PBS stations will remember that RD exists after all this time.
  5:52pm
Mandate:

Yes, I see what you mean, Cynic. Ha ha!
  5:54pm
rrg:

I also think it should be "Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers" rather than "the". In this case.
  5:56pm
rrg:

Also "Suck it for the U.S.A." (not "For").

Now see what you did. Now I can't stop looking.
  5:56pm
Igetit:

Yes! After all it is Katrina and The Waves.
  5:57pm
Carmichael:

Slade! Noddy Holder!!
  5:58pm
Lord Sutch:

Dave Hill! Super Yob!
  5:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Slade!!!
  5:59pm
rrg:

"What's in the Bag?" (not "In")
  5:59pm
Caryn:

Speaking of British TV, anyone ever watch Noddy Holder's quiz show "Noddy's Electric Ladyland"?
  6:00pm
G:

Ah, Slade brings back the good old early 70s days of Monday morning shredded train seats left for us commuters by Slade fans going to and from football matches on Saturdays :-)
  6:00pm
rrg:

No time to correct more. Curses.
  6:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Great finish Irwin! I'll check out the middle as soon as I'm able! :)
Have a good night people!
  6:00pm
Caryn:

@rrg: did you see Noddy on Corrie?
