A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

chickens are swell, thanks for asking. they are all cozy in a coop with lots of closed windows and doors. airholes up top for venting. my husband just put in an automatic coop door to close up the ramp door, goes down after dark if we can't get back in time, dark is so early now. we ordered a heater unit for their water, so that won't freeze. chickens hardy to this part of north america are good with the cold, they cozy up to each other.

@Brian. God yes, Twice, in Brighton then managed to get a ticket for the Barbican from someone off Twitter. Ended up in the front row! They were just magnificent shows. I'm still buzzing from them. And I met JG. Lovely chap.
  9:56am
BodegaMan:

@Andrew Waterloo - I'd like to offer a counterpoint that Nate Silver works with math and facts, not witchcraft. That's why the true believers feel threatened. Ok, back to Trouble's great set.

@Brian Oh I see. Sorry. Well, the website I was doing podcasts for is dead, so it's a case of girding my loins and either setting up on my own or finding another station that'll have me. But yes, I'd love to chat with him.

@Brian: States get to set their own processes for federal elections, within the broad boundaries set by federal laws. Before the 1830s, elections for state presidential electors were held on many different dates, sometimes varying by many months, till states were required federally to hold them uniformly on the first Tu after first Mon in Nov.

Modern closing times are all in the evening, after 9-5 work ends, but vary from 6 to 9PM local time.
  10:17am
Brian in UK:

@Adrian There must some new material on the way. He seems to have been touring the album forever. This is what people do these days. Beatles used to make 2/3 records, a film & tour the world all in a year. I know, old fart writing.

Less government basically. Not more. You know, that "freedom" thing.

We need the freedom to bemoan the fact that there are some people who have the nerve to be different.

  11:09am
kwhitehead:

There are quite a few folks in my neck of the woods that are pretty pleased about "big government" right about now but, whatever floats your boat.
  11:09am
Frisbeetarian:

The government puts very few restrictions on my freedom, especially since I have no desire to partake in illegal drugs, own assault weapons, carry a pistol on my person in the densely populated state in which I live, or produce my own unpasturized cheese. The goverment does, however, protect my freedom to live without others negatively affecting my life by doing those things. So I guess it's a wash.

And to do it without harassment or violence is something to be treasured. Saw a couple of older Somali women working as election judges. They were bursting with pride.
  11:15am

The cheese regulations vary by state but, typically, unpasteurized cheesed can't be sold unless first aged for a minimum period – 6 months, I think.

Andrew Waterloo:

Here in Ontario the there's a lot of controversy over unpasteurized milk.
  11:17am
Cecile:

A cheese stand selling fresh unpasteurized goat cheese under 60 days sells it as "fish bait". You can't sell it as human or animal food, but they wiggle around it by calling it bait.
  11:17am
βrian:

From the pedia on the "Cheese Nun": "... Rémy Grappin ... said that she had studied the biodiversity of raw-milk cheese fungi and no one else was fighting harder to preserve it in a world of standardization and pasteurization."

kwhitehead:

Just found "Affectionate Punch" on vinyl on Saturday. So happy and nice work Ms. Trouble!

@Cecile, I'm lactose intolerant. I'm not very passionate about the whole milk thing, as long as I can buy 12 year-old white Canadian cheddar I am happy.
  11:23am

I took a risk with that goat cheese, and asked a ton of questions. I am super-cautious about fresh raw milk products. We've had some deaths around here recently from listeria from liquid raw milk

Personally, I wouldn't make a habit of consuming raw milk. But cultured raw-milk cheese is a whole 'nother thing. The good critters win out.

Hello Annie! Hi Trouble. Thank you for the Please Vote Rant. All over the world people DIE in the effort of voting. Out of respect I always vote. I cannot imagine what would happen if Romney was to win this election. How can people want to grant this crazy man power?
  11:32am
Cecile:

common, we don't even go up to the UP until after Election Day. My husaband is an old-school moderate Republican, and I'm a liberal-ra-tarian, and we come off like flippin' Yippies up there.
  11:33am

C, you should do it. If it's a close one, your vote will really matter.
  11:34am

@Cecile - gotta love those old-school moderate republicans! my best friend comes out of that camp and boy could we use more thinkers like him.
  11:36am
Jennique:

Heading out to vote, hopefully the wait will not be too long. Hasta la pasta!
  11:36am

Lewis, my heart has been broken since some of the most principled people I know were driven out of the party in the late 70s by the Moral Majority. Which is so ironic I can't even fathom it.
  11:36am
Erik:

With MORE government a station like wfmu would not exist.

  11:45am

@Erik, wrong. Not all big gov't is bad. Some is, but not all. It took a strong FCC/gov't to require a non-comm/educational section of the FM radio band. Without that, WFMU would never have existed.
  11:46am

  11:48am
common:

@cecil I bet. Ah, humans. strange creatures.
  11:50am
Cecile:

I think it goes deeper than that. There are still big parts of this country that are barely settled, and it keeps alive the notion of self-sufficiency. Never mind that you can't really be self-sufficient in a city or burbs the way you can on a farm or wilderness.

In my dabbling with putting together playlists etc. I have been collecting songs about thinking. "I think about stuff" by those darn accordions would be appropriate right about now... (well not so much in Trouble's set, but wrt the comment side of things)

But at the same time, there are a lot of inana and idiotic laws on the books, and I really feel like people are talking "freedom" but at the same time trying to tell me what I can do in the privacy of my own home...

Cecile: right, the people that scream "small government" the loudest are the ones trying to require IDs to vote. My friends in PA were asked for IDs (not the law there) and they asked to see the poll worker's ID.

Longtime listener, first time commenter just popping my head in for a sec to recommened Joe Bageant's great book Deer Hunting with Jesus to anyone wondering why so many people vote for the bad guys. Cuz certainly many are asses, but not all of 'em are. (Hot tip: you can get a lot of what's in the book on his website for free, broken down into essays...)
