Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Thanks for listening to this episode of The Dusty Show! I hope you enjoyed it. It was fun to do a music-oriented program and to hear everybody's differing tastes in music. We are doing our 'Logging' shows now, where we have to log every little bit of music we play, so for me, it is quite a challenge. Worked on this playlist from 9pm - 2am!!!! SO GLAD IT'S DONE! Anyway ... that said, I hope you continue to tune in and that I can count on you to be back next Thursday for another episode of TDS. Email me! I never hear from you.

Until next time, take care and ...

Always Remember

I must confess, I suddenly became a Journey fan a few years ago. I blame "Scrubs" constantly playing Journey tracks during episodes.
  6:05pm
steve:

great show topic!
  6:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Glee" - it's like "The Monkees" of our generation, but they don't even have original songs - they just cover existing ones! But, your mileage may vary. More power to 'em.

Matt, Pine, Carmichael, Frances with the drink ... HELLO!

re: Glee, the best thing about it that it gives kids (gay & not gay) positive gay characters and role models to hopefully chip away at high school bullying. OK, off my soapbox ;)
  6:09pm
Caryn:

@Carmichael: heh. Maybe I shouldn't even mention how the same thing happened with Styx. Only with that, I blame "Freaks & Geeks", "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and "South Park". Damn you, tv!
@Matt: I'm a huge Beach Boys fan, actually. "Surf's Up" is their best.
  6:09pm
Frances from RVA:

ps: as for what I've been listening to a lot of latey: Clay Pigeon sings Classic Rock! (& Palomar is always in rotation in my world)
  6:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Problem solved then!

@Frances: True, as I said not for me, but more power to 'em. Say, what's your drink? ;)
  6:12pm
listener David:

Here is a link to the girl you just interviewed http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2919721/?ref_=fn_al_nm_5
  6:12pm
Caryn:

@Frances: actually, all the worst, most violent bullies in "Glee" were closeted gays, and every gay character is either a tortured victim or a saint. It's just a torture-porn version of reality that has alienated a lot of gay fans. *Off my own soapbox now*
  6:12pm
BSI:

And hurrah for the Ornette reference. His NEW YORK IS NOW! record changed my damned life. a very long time ago.

I've been listening to a lot of Gwar, they seem to keep popping up everywhere at the minute.

Whoa David! Are you sure that was Eboné Johnson? If so that could be the same one!

Hi, Pidger kat!
  6:14pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I thought the first 6 episodes of Glee were amazing. After that, seemed to deal with social problems in a monster-of-the-week kind of way and it was often very superficial and dumbed down.
  6:14pm
Carmichael:

OK Caryn, now you're redeemed. I'm a huge Beach Boys fan, which I think is required for Californians.

@Matt: old lady drink: wine + a dash of ginger ale for fizz & a dash of pomegranate juice.

Did Clay really think that this would be a simple and light show for a change? It always turns existential with Clay's shows.

And, I did see your earlier comment: HAPPY Meeting-on-the-Web Anniversary to kat and Philo! The Web has been around awhile, looking back now!

  6:19pm
green mountain man mark:

The thing that cracks me up the most is that Clay seems to be very existential and even serious with his own show but when he is on other shows he comes around as crazy and zany and evocative. Can he do one of his shows on the street the same way he behaves talking with Fabio?
  6:21pm
Philo Gristle:

Eating, thus not typing, but thanks Matt! 15 years and counting.
  6:21pm
Ike:

WJJZ? Ha ha! That station has been gone for YEARS!

Philly doesn't even have a 24-hour public jazz station any more. Temple Univ.'s station used to be a good one, but now it's classical days, jazz at night.
  6:21pm
kat330:

Yeah, Matt, Philo just translated. And online romances can go back much further than that (as you *know* you stinker ;) to 1985!
  6:21pm
Caryn:

@Frances: yeah, I nowadays follow "Glee" simply for the occasional guest star and to see how the songs are. Occasionally they're good, e.g. the Adele mash-up was excellent.
  6:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

@mark: A deep, reflective and often worried mind, much like mine. But also like me, I try to have fun with life and with myself. I even adopted a motto that explains this dichotomy:

"Think Seriously, Act Deliriously!" :D

@Green Mountain: It WOULD be funny to hear Clay just asking everyone on the street, "Did you 'make' today?"

@Caryn: will look for the Adele mashup. I checked out their version of Psy's song on YouTube.

Matt from Springfield:

Speaking of "Glee" however. I found a breakthrough in my personal genealogy yesterday, thus confirming my descent from a particular person. I was thus able to decisively link myself with a "Glee" hearthrob star, Chord Overstreet.

(Also then to his Dad, country singer Paul Overstreet. Clay probably knows of him)

My interest, Clayton. Hello Kat.
  6:26pm
Carmichael:

There you are folks: The Boys of the Beach.
Avatar 6:26pm
Pidge:

You're welcome Kat330. Wish I had three hours so I could play whole songs!
Avatar 6:27pm
Pidge:

Fredericks, I almost put that Wilburn Burchette on ebay!
  6:27pm
Caryn:

@kat: well, they can go either way. I think most are west-to-east, but we get east-west, north-south etc. ones too. This one came from the southwest, hung around, and then apparently went west again. I think it's just circling aimlessly.
  6:27pm
kat330:

@Carm: Speaking of storms, did you personally get clobbered? Kept hearing Sacramento was a mess.
  6:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Pidge: You (and we!) were cheated out of a night of quality Hurricane programming this year!
  6:28pm
Frances from RVA:

Badlands=still one of my all time fave Springsteen songs
Avatar 6:28pm
Pidge:

That was frustrating, Matt
Avatar 6:29pm
Pidge:

It's a great one, Frances. Saw a recent doc about the making of Darkness on the Edge of Town. Really good. Made me jealous of real Jerseyites.
  6:29pm
kat330:

@Pidge: [muchly impressed, too, that you're spelling my handle w/o that extra "t" -- any idea why you saw it that way? Or it had a meaning for you?
  6:30pm
Caryn:

With Springsteen, I'm firmly in the "Thunder Road", "The River", "Born to Run" corner. That's the top 3, in descending order.
  6:30pm
Philo Gristle:

Genealogy, Matt? During my visit earlier this year I heard there were shamans, dukes and bootleggers in my lineage. I became interested to the extend there were photos, and trying to figure out who's who. Have a daguerrotype of a great grandfather!
Avatar 6:30pm
Pidge:

I think KATT is Philo's wife, right?
  6:30pm
kat330:

Queen, Lady Gaga -- yep, high drama fit for a Shakespearean actor.
  6:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

We still thank you for standing watch and guarding the dark station. Your "Magic of Clay" may very well have prevented even further damage, from a flood....
  6:31pm
seang:

Howdy Clay and all listeners around the globe!
  6:31pm
kat330:

kat330 is. I dunno who KATT is??
  6:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Philo: That's great! And hey, they have bootleggers over there too!
Avatar 6:31pm
Pidge:

Seang ... welcome!

@Matt ... Don't forget Therese in that equation. She was braver and bolder than I!

Mooseful thing! Welcome!
  6:33pm
Frances from RVA:

@Pidge: I'll have to look for that documentary!
My Iowan husband is also yearning for SNOW.
  6:33pm
Carmichael:

@kat: Yes, we got pounded for about 3 days straight. Lots of flooding, but nothing like Jersey. Now it's just cold and grey.
  6:33pm
Bad Ronald:

Dropping in to say I love the whimsical nature of today's broadcast. Yes, those Wilson brothers sure could croon and vintage Queen too! Keep up the great work. Thanks!
  6:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: This is before my time, but my going theory is the show "Knight Rider" -- I thought the talking William Daniels car was K.A.T.T. (actually, it's K.I.T.T.)
  6:34pm
Caryn:

I just bought the "Guys & Dolls" original soundtrack for 99 cents at a sale. And a 3-disc collection of music from Brando movies.
Avatar 6:34pm
Pidge:

@Northguineahills ... that was KIX. Have a good night!
  6:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Goodnight NGH!
  6:35pm
kat330:

@ngh: OK, that's as clear as hair gel! G'night, and have a restful, sweet dreamy one!
Avatar 6:35pm
Pidge:

My wife and I just watched Apocalypse Now Redux, Caryn. Loved it, but I prefer the original edited version. They did such a good job. Hearts of Darkness is excellent, too.
  6:35pm
Carmichael:

oh God, KIX! What a memory. Caly, do yo remember Nutz? As Far As the Eye Can See?
  6:35pm
Philo Gristle:

@Matt Noooooooooooooooo! I admit to seeing the hoffmeister show more than once, once upon a time.
  6:36pm
kat330:

@Matt: I first thought he simply considered me a mouthy female adjunct to mouthy Matt. :) But then Aurélie used that spelling as well. Just curious, as cats, kats and even katts will be.
  6:37pm
Frances from RVA:

& "Runnin' w/the Devil"=one of my favorite VHalen songs. Granted, I don't know much beyond their first lp...
  6:37pm
Caryn:

@Clay: yeah, Redux has interesting additions, but I too prefer the original. And the documentary. Man, that shoot was a nightmare.
  6:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Pidge: I got my Dad that version once for Christmas--he liked it, but commented that scenes are in a diff sequence from the original cut, or something like that.

@Philo: Check the Philippines, they're prob STILL re-running those there! Along with original "Dallas", "Denver"... :)
  6:39pm
Carmichael:

Hearts of Darkness. What an incredible documentary. When you realize how the Sheen scene in front of the mirror was created, it changes your whole outlook.
  6:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

TEDDY!! Get the good people in the MOOD! RIP...great not just solo, but also with Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.
  6:39pm
Caryn:

@Philo: did you ever do the joke lyrics to the "Knight Rider" theme? "Käkkäräpää, käkkäräpää, naisia metsästää..."
  6:40pm
Philo Gristle:

Eleanor Coppola's book on it, NOTES, is well worth reading too.
  6:40pm
Frances from RVA:

the novella Heart of Darkness by Conrad is an amazing read as well.
  6:41pm
Marmalade Kitty:

That last guy who went to the bathroom sounded like Barry White..
  6:41pm
Frances from RVA:

I AM ALWAYS OVERJOYED TO HEAR THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY.
sorry for the shouting, but it was a joyful shout!
  6:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

Greets, Kitty!
  6:42pm
david:

hi all, sorry I'm tardy
  6:42pm
Philo Gristle:

@Caryn I was JUST telling Kat how I now will blame Matt the rest of the evening for installing that annoyingly catchy tune to my brain. But no, I didn't. Ha!
  6:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Frances: My Dad has rec'd the novel to me--I don't get around to reading fiction much but that remains on my list.
  6:43pm
david:

Brian Setzer now there's a musician
  6:43pm
Fredericks:

What's Wilburn Burchette going for?

KATT may be a radio station.
  6:43pm
Marmalade Kitty:

..no?

Hi Clay, Matt & everyone!!!
  6:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

@david: You're never tardy, if it's a party!
@Philo: Oh well--listen to something else stupidly catchy to get it out of your head! ;)
  6:44pm
Caryn:

@Frances: oh man, my university English Lit. studies included a whole "Heart of Darkness and its' connections with medieval mythology" portion...
  6:44pm
kat330:

I recall a very interesting Fresh Air interview with Walter Murch (sound design) on the filming of "Apocalypse Now."
  6:45pm
kat330:

@david: Are you also the "other david"?
Avatar 6:45pm
Pidge:

@Frederixx - $75-ish. But I don't have the psychedelic booklet. Too bad. Wouldn't sell it anyway ......... keeping you in mind.
  6:45pm
david:

That it is, MFS :)
  6:46pm
david:

No Kat, I believe o.d. is from across the pond...
  6:46pm
Philo Gristle:

Big fan of Conrad; last read was sections of Mirror of the Sea, autobio on his experiences as a captain. But I'll read any oldtimey maritime adventures...
  6:46pm
Frances from RVA:

Hi Ms Kitty!

@Matt: It's a super quick read.

@Caryn: That sounds like a dream come true for me! I read it in university too, but minus those amazing connections. I did take a great medieval studies course: less Chaucer and more medieval women mystics, etc which was considered a radical course back in the 1980's. ha.
  6:47pm
kat330:

OK, well, greets to you! :) Just hadn't seen OD on any list in a while.
  6:47pm
Carmichael:

@Matt: You should read everything by Conrad. There's a 4 story novella out there with The Secret Sharer, Typhoon, and I can't remember the other 2. Besides Heart of Darkness, Nostromo and The Secret Agent are must-reads.
  6:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

Actually, "david" is the regular, "vanilla" david. As opposed to: Dave B, Dave E, Listener Dave from Seattle, Dave from Upstate?, etc...that's why OD works as a moniker. Are you __ david? "No, I'm the *other* david" :)
  6:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Carm!
  6:49pm
david:

ah, reverie... yeah, where is o.d.? long live all the davids/daves - we represent on the playlists!
  6:49pm
Frances from RVA:

"Do you listen to the old Boston bands? SS Decontrol, Mission of Burma?" (hee)
  6:49pm
david:

vanilla I am not, Matt... more like boysenberry! ;)
  6:50pm
Tommy Chong:

Dave's not here man.
  6:50pm
kat330:

David is a great name so there should be multitudes. So is Michael (all IMO, of course).
  6:50pm
seang:

went to a metal show the other week, High on Fire, they rocked!
  6:51pm
Carmichael:

OD is our man in Ireland.
  6:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

Boysenberry david! Delish! :)
  6:51pm
Philo Gristle:

I'll second carm, but HoD is the easy quick place to start. I started with Typhoon, equally brief. Narcissus was probably one of the 4 story batch.I may have that paperback.
  6:51pm
steve:

Clay i like your between-interview techno! but i guess you didn't find any other techno fans?
  6:51pm
kat330:

Mr. Chong, Daily Show had a great bit about medical marijuana for seniors the other night -- maybe last night? I haven't had much sleep and did not get a katnap today. :,
  6:51pm
david:

lol Tommy
  6:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

Graceland! Classy solo-Paul selection if I do say so myself, Pidge!
  6:52pm
French Canadien Bad Boy:

"I do not listen to 311."
  6:52pm
david:

you'll find Davids and Daves to generally be of upstanding character
  6:52pm
Philo Gristle:

Our Man In Ireland. Ok, how about Graham Greene for some good classic fiction?
  6:52pm
kat330:

Who here has been to Graceland? (holding up my hand)
Avatar 6:52pm
Pidge:

I like it too, Steve. Found a collection of 23 of those 12" discs in a Salvation Army. Check out the E-23 episode.

Holding up hand. The Platinum Tour, including the Lisa Marie, Elvis' jet. Loved it!

"I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave."
  6:54pm
kat330:

Clay, just for Philo and Caryn -- viking rock!
  6:54pm
steve:

whoa! thanks Clay, i guess i missed that show
  6:54pm
Tommy Chong:

What are you insinuating kat330?
  6:54pm
Carmichael:

Yes, I've been to the Elvis shrine. All foreigners must visit soon after touching down in the US. You know who you are ....
Avatar 6:55pm
Pidge:

I am Danish. Wife is Norwegian. Scando-R-Us!
  6:55pm
kat330:

@Pidge: My older sister and I took the road trip from Lullville there in the mid-90s. She's the super Elvis fan, but I had a really good time.
  6:55pm
david:

"I used to be a king" excellent Nash solo song

Frances from RVA:

I visited Graceland in 1989 or so, his Great Aunt was still living there & we saw her on the back patio!
  6:56pm
Philo Gristle:

My dad had over 100 Elvis albums. Kat & I drove by Graceland.
  6:56pm
Carmichael:

See you all later. Keep your teeth clean!
  6:56pm
kat330:

Philo was US naturalized in 2007, so he *should* have visited right after the ceremony, but he's still not been there (other than passing by) in our trip to Nawlis and Memphis 2008.
  6:57pm
Frances from RVA:

Have a great weekend! Always remember. We'll be buying our Christmas tree on Dec 8th. , nice tribute to peace I guess?
  6:57pm
kat330:

@Carm: Keep your feet dry! 'Night!
  6:57pm
Philo Gristle:

When he was working in Russia we sold them all for one month's rent. Sniff.
  6:58pm
kat330:

New Orleans, of course.

Speaking of GREAT David's.... R.I.P....

Have a good one everyone! Thank you Mr. Pidge, as usual!
  6:58pm
Philo Gristle:

G'nite, owl. Total Recall.
  6:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Fun comments, a suitably crowded party here tonight!
Take care! Preserve your memories!
  6:59pm
david:

case in point kat, rip indeed - always remember
  6:59pm
Caryn:

@PG: oh man, that's awful...

And thanks, Clay and everyone! Nice to be listening live after a long break.
