Irene, I happen to have the week off Nothing like being home on a cool wet December day listening to your show!

John Morris:

This is the kind of show that drew me to FMU in '76. And why I went to Upsala a few years later. Thanks!

Irene:

Bill, so glad you have a moment off to listen! Besides, I'm sure you don't really want to be out in this dank weather checking up on transit buses. ;D

Irene:

Nice John! I think this kind of show was also what drew me to WFMU. That, and all its other wild mood swings.
  1:16pm
John Morris:

The mood swings are the best parts. It was my great college days, and having a show twice a week was the best part! Going from the dorms downstairs carrying a crate of records. OK I'll shut up about the old days.

Van in DC:

Wasn't it Alash that had a lot of their instruments stolen while here on tour? If I remember right it was...I wonder if they ever recovered them if it was them?

liz:

nice show irene...many thanks from berlin

Hey John! Guess I didn't know that you were on air then. Do yo have any archival shows on tape? I bet it would be fun to hear them now.

And that's correct, Van. When Alash visited the show about 2 years ago they had lost all their instruments and costumes. I don't know what the outcome of the loss was but I do see they're touring starting in February. www.alashensemble.com

Sean Daily:

I got a replacement for the Happy Birthday song:

Deep within the womb of time,
a creature thus be born
The seed of life is united with
the egg of tyranny
Gestates forth from within the womb of life
for three-quarter and nigh a year
The creature thus be born!
The creature thus be formed!
And ye of years...
[Your current age] bells
Will chime!
When the heavens open up
and drink from the silver cup
The creature thus be born!
And blow the magic horn!
To alert the spirit deep within the cycle of life.
The creature has begun it's journey deep forlorn,
upon this day which he be formed
In the sea of mucus the spirit rides down from the mountain
and unites with the creature in the womb
A holy union, dark mortality, until the dark mortality
breaks the chain of life
The creature thus be born
And every year raineth down the celebratory tears
A celebration of the years
from mere mortal sky

Hello all, Thanks for purveying the misty moods to my windowless office. I've resorted to the android app for your show since the tech Nazi's here have blocked everything..now even flash. Bad reception usually in this location. but the data transmission gods have smiled on you Irene, and your comin' through!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
Irene:

Ah, too bad, John! I find it fun (and maybe a little scary) to listen back to shows from a long time ago to see what I might've found popular. Sometimes it's a bit cringe-worthy.

Kevin, glad you could join us via Droid. I often do the same with WFMU when I'm traveling. It's a fairly stable app.

I've been told that "Beware of Mr. Baker" (the new ginger baker doc) is fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm
Irene:

It really is, Mike. The filmmaker dug up some amazing footage I didn't know existed. And the moments with Ginger are totally un-glamorized.

love that song East Timor, where Ginger goes, "There was a BLOODY war"

I've got it saved on my netflix queue for whenever it comes out. No chance of this new poppa get out to the theater anytime soon.
