  8:04am duke:

Did the world end and I missed it?
You're looking quite well this morning Mr. Drummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am Doug Schulkind:

Ahoy Mr. Duke! Let's see where this ark takes us!
  8:40am Uncle Michael:

If this is going to have to do for my post-apocalyptic dystopia, color me unimpressed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44am Doug Schulkind:

Our new friend, Rangda (shown at left), will make an appearance during the final set of today's broadcast!
  8:45am Uncle Michael:

He's adorable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47am Doug Schulkind:

I hate to tell you this, Uncle Michael, be that's a... She.
  8:53am Uncle Michael:

Even better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54am Doug Schulkind:

I'm not so sure you'll feel that way once you've read her bio.
  8:56am Uncle Michael:

"She is depicted as a mostly nude old woman, with long and unkempt hair, pendulous breasts, and claws. Her face is traditionally a horrifying fanged and goggle-eyed mask, with a long, protruding tongue."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am Doug Schulkind:

Has the word "pendulous" ever been less unappealing?
  8:57am Uncle Michael:

So...Madonna.
  8:59am Uncle Michael:

Using "pendulous" in a complimentary fashion is always a challenge, whether discussing decorative ornaments or anatomy.
  9:00am ndbob:

morning Doug. Michael, everyone
  9:00am glenn:

pfffft. mayans. what do they know?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am Doug Schulkind:

Very best morning to you, ndbob

@Uncle Michael
I changed "more" to "less."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Doug Schulkind:

Helloo glennn!
  9:02am Uncle Michael:

No fair editing. It screws with the banter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

Blame the Mayans, Uncle Michael.
  9:03am glenn:

howdies, evahbody.
  9:04am Uncle Michael:

One of your brethren played In Tempo very recently. I remember because I was moved to google.
  9:04am Hugo:

That creature on top of the playlist looks like something we have hanging on the wall at home, from Sri Lanka, though less scary.
  9:06am Uncle Michael:

Wait...it was you...last Friday!
  9:08am Uncle Michael:

I likes it.
  9:08am duke:

Did Mrs. DrummerSome know you took Rangda to bed last night? That could lead to the end of the world.
  9:09am Van in DC:

Ah! One of the Hero Twins on the Road to Xibalba? Hi Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy Van in RG3ville!

My cat Bluestar was the least happy camper in bed last night.
  9:11am Van in DC:

Happy once-in-ever-26000-years Galactic Precession day!
  9:12am Uncle Michael:

I think Nam Ta La Sai is my favorite Phon Phirom 8-Track. It hasn't been out of the car deck in weeks. It makes the '73 Dart feel like....home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

I came up in a '73 Dart, Uncle Michael. It was copper colored. Badass car if there ever was one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

We really should git together more often, Van in DC.
  9:16am glenn:

i had a '73 dodge demon. near the end of it's life it was 3/4 covered in stainless steel panels held on with pop rivets.

I once got a Kali blessing in Eastern Nepal, close to the border with West Bengal. I'm sure some would find it a mixed blessing. Kali even got a city named after her. Not bad, eh?

  9:20am glenn:

  9:20am Alex in Illinois:

Hey hey hey. The Mayans have been given bad press these days. They never predicted any apocalypse in 2012. It's just that their civilization fell before they got around to making a new calendar. Most things I have read about them said that their civilization fell because of a peasant revolt. Apparently the elite class was ... hmmm... okay maybe their civilization was not so great after all. I guess they had a problem with the upper 1%.

They had accomplished some good engineering feats, though.
  9:21am Uncle Michael:

I have never seen those four words in that order before, Doug.
  9:23am ndbob:

nice one here!
  9:24am Artie:

So this is the Afterworld, huh? I was hoping for something a little more, ah, /different/. Oh well, at least the radio is good here. Yawn. Stretch. Blink.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

Engineering feats don't fail me now, Alex.
  9:25am Hugo:

@Doug: Almost there, Swedish actually, but the tune is well-known over here, too. A classic, really.
  9:25am Uncle Michael:

This morning I would like to know the English translation for each of your luchador names.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for the typo mockery, glenn. No really.
  9:25am Van in DC:

Rangda isn't scary. She's HAPPY...she's eating a strawberry.
  9:26am Hugo:

Or her tongue ...
  9:27am Uncle Michael:

I am El Zumbido Mata.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

All Christian folk jazz looks alike to me, Hugo. Sorry to offend your nation.
  9:29am Van in DC:

I was expecting some really bizarre XKCD today about the whole Mayan thing, but the whole Instagram thing proved too good for them to pass on :)
  9:31am Artie:

A chicken song this epic may have single-handedly prevented the Apocalypse. What righteous higher power could destroy a culture capable of such feats?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Doug Schulkind:

Okay, it's now snowing here in Pittsburgh. The beginning of the end?
  9:33am Hugo:

Don't blame you, Doug. We're a couple of small countries on the outskirts of Western civilisation. We're happy to offend the Swedes, though. A national pastime ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Doug Schulkind:

How Swede it is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

If you gotta go chicken song, Artie, go epic chicken song.
  9:39am duke:

Serious apocalyptic winds here in upstate NY. I keep losing my connection to WFMU. Damn Mayans. What I have heard is great. Really liked the Charles Brackeen cut.

  9:48am Hugo:

Very Swede. We have an expression "söta bror" which translates into "sweet brother". Swedes are nice.
  9:52am Artie:

@Hugo: Can you say something nice about the Finns?
  9:55am Van in DC:

  10:06am Uncle Michael:

Uhhh... Send in the Clowns from 1964?
  10:12am Uncle Michael:

The song was from Sondheim's "A Little Night Music" which debuted in the mid-'70s.
  10:12am ndbob:

I was in Thunder Bay - long ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

Debuted is such a funny-lookin' word in print.
  10:14am Uncle Michael:

Send in the Clowns was written to replace a superior song because the actress cast to play the part wasn't an accomplished singer and hence, a song was written that consists of the short phrases you hear. It doesn't require much breath to sing SITC.
  10:14am Van in DC:

Sounding GREAT
  10:14am Uncle Michael:

It really is.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

OK, OK, i found it. Lorez Alexandria's version of "Send in the Clowns" is from her 1977 release (in Japan) of "From Broadway to Hollywood."

Thank you for applying the rod of correction, Uncle Michael.
  10:18am Uncle Michael:

My mother took me to see it on Broadway in it's first season...with Glynis Johns, Len Cario and Hermione Gingold. A couple of years ago I saw it with my wife who had never been to New York and who adores Angela Lansbury...with Angela and Catherine Zeta Jones.
  10:19am Uncle Michael:

I told you, my luchador name is El Zumbido Mata. That's "buzz kill" in English.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

I always remember Hermione Gingold's character in "The Music Man" spitting out the word BALZAC!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:20am Jeff G:

I heard Sondheim was thinking of Rangda for the Zeta Jones part.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:21am Jeff G:

Ok, I can tell I will have nothing useful to add to the confab today.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:21am Jeff G:

Zeta Jones is perhaps better equipped to live alongside the dead.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

Ah, Jeff G, that's what you meant by "alongside the dead."
  10:29am Uncle Michael:

Today is the first day of a 12 day weekend. I don't want to go anywhere but I probably will succumb to the lure of savory comestibles.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:31am Jeff G:

@Doug: someone please explain that photo to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

You mean the image gracing today's playlist? That is the mighty Rangda, who prevented the Mayan apocalypse singlehandedly. At least in my neighborhood.
  10:36am Uncle Michael:

This Willie Gauff is the improvised explosive device!
  10:45am Matt from Springfield:

The world is still here, and it sounds GREAT!

Happy Winter, Doug and all Drummer-somers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

  10:49am kat330:

Finns and Sondheim? Interesting discussion for a roomful of men!

I for one can attest to an extremely fine Finn, known in these parts as Philo. He's a shy sort, but I find him very scrutable. (OK, gotta go there since we survived the end of the word: very screw-table, too. ;)

Happy winter solstice Doug, duke, UM, ndbob, glenn, Hugo, Van, Alex, Artie Jeff G, Matt and jill (hope I didn't miss anyone)!
  10:49am Van in DC:

Matt! hullo!
  10:51am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Doug, Uncle, Michael, Van!
The kat is back!
  10:51am Uncle Michael:

I enjoyed your music Kat. I'm a little envious of anyone that can make some.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

Hey kat330! and hey up there Jill!
  10:53am kat330:

Arrghh, end of the worLd, bocoors.

@UM: Ah, so you did get the email? I'd had some gmail problems of late and wasn't sure. Thanks so much! We muchly enjoyed that #163 and hope to put your archive into regular rotation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Anyone know what the hell instrument is warbling away here? I'm not sure I like it, but I love it.
  10:54am Matt from Springfield:

@Van: With everyone I chatted with busy this holiday season, I'd like to move any VA/DC Meetups into January. It would be easier to coordinate w/ you by email--do you have your email typed in the comment field? If so, then:

@Doug, could you kindly send my email in the comment field to Van, and I'll send a test reply back? Thanks!
  10:56am Van in DC:

Always! :)
  10:56am kat330:

I must be behind because I'm not hearing any warble. (or I have inferior audio equipment, which is probable)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

Not sure what you're requesting, Matt. You want me to send your email address to Van, is that it? If so, send me an email now and I'll forward it.

@kat330
The warbling stopped. There was a noodly fretless bass-sounding synthesizerish instrument quavering earlier.
  10:58am still b/p:

I was just noticing how much I like that sound when it wanderboogies...very 70s.

Speaking of the decade...FWIW -- I saw the Night Music on the Broadway with the Glynis, summer of '73, when for me her celebrity status was still associated with Mary Poppins.
  10:58am kat330:

@Matt: The "kat is back" 'cause I know you've got mine! :) [That and the BBC 5 show is now over]
  10:59am dcp@:

I'm always living several minutes in the past on WFMU playlists. That means I'll have a few minutes extra to live after the end...

YAY Charlie!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff G:

@Doug: actually was hoping for an exegesis of the Zeta Jones snap. But that's for another day. I need to go earn the money that keeps my family knee deep in funky free jazz records.
  11:00am kat330:

@sb/p: Oh that must have been wonderful! Sondheim is a certifiable genius. I heard an interview with him where he mentioned using Wood's Rhyming Dictionary for his lyrics. Made me feel ever so much better that I also used it for my limericks from time to time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

dcp@ is b@ack!
  11:01am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Just did!
I'm not sure how it looks on your end of the playlist, but I always assumed the DJ sees the "Email address (optional, not public)" field on their side. But since it's probably easier to forward it along, I just sent one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff G

  11:02am Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

Wait a minute! Has there ever been a band called The Ex Jesuses? If not, I call it!
  11:02am Uncle Michael:

Doug, can you play side one of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway?
  11:03am dcp@:

Oh I been hangin'. Having a battle with the wife's listening preferences--she wants to continue to hear Diane Rhem's guests tell us that there are no moderate Democrats in congress...I wonder who are the NON moderate Democrats...
  11:03am Hugo:

We ought to have some holywarbling on here.
  11:03am Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

For a long time, my favorite "unused band name" was Spatula. But then a listener informed me of a band from North Carolina with that name.

@Uncle Michael
I have not yet been taught to love Genesis. (I loathe Phil Collins, I hafta say.) I'm Tony Coulter could teach me.
  11:03am Artie:

Rizen! Retired!!
  11:05am Uncle Michael:

Collins was a great drummer in the REAL Genesis,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

@Artie
Your comment is thrilling! But I don't know what it means!
  11:06am kat330:

dcp@: Solution: ask for another Internet radio as a present! We picked up a refurbished Grace for under $50, and (so far) works better than the original full price we had to return.
  11:06am Van in DC:

Favorite unused band name? I think I may still have dibs on "Ergo my Tizzyness" ;)
  11:06am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Every single band name possible is taken. At least in webpage form--I don't know how "real" many of these bands are.

After reading "1984" I looked up various terms to see if any bands named themselves after them ("Two Minutes Hate", "Unpersons") and there were pretty much websites for bands for all of them! (One of those, "Victory Gin", actually has gotten FMU airplay).
  11:07am Van in DC:

  11:22am Matt from Springfield:

@Van: I looked Alan Skidmore up years ago, to see if the saxophonist playing that part was the same one who played on a much more obscure 70s album I have. It wasn't the same guy, but I learned all about Alan's long sessionography in the process.

+1 to George Cromarty for "Jeng"his Khan -- that's closer to the original which is more like "Cheng"his Khan. Over time we've hardened that G.
  11:22am ndbob:

When Philo came back from his morning jog, he spoke of how very cold it was because of a stiff wind. Apparently we had a wind-chill temp of 14 this morning. Seems it was near 60 just yesterday morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey Carmichael!

@Van
A lotta people are going to be touching your chest with that shirt on. Nice way to meet new people!

@kat330
Me too!

@Matt from S
I heard that Jeng-giss pronunciation, too. Sounds so much more authoritative that way.
  11:26am still b/p:

(dropped connection = relevance lag, 2 topics)
Kat, one of my reflexive go-to rhyming methods -- shared with many -- is to grab non-rhyming prospects and adapt/damage/hybridize 'em.

Collins drummed for Eno so the arithmetic of his soul is not calculated too simply.
  11:29am Alex in Illinois:

I saw a Russian-made silent movie from the early 20th century, and the subtitles spelled it: "Jengis Kahn"
  11:30am kat330:

The hard "G" seems that to me -- very German, which oddly enough is itself pronounced Jerman. I always pronounced GIF, and find it weird when folks pronounce it JIF. Ruins one of my best taglines pronounced that way as well.
  11:30am Uncle Michael:

mmmm...rice
  11:30am Brian in UK:

Hipsters, Flipsters, Finger poppin' Daddies on this great swinging sphere. Give it up for the Drummers work in 2012.
  11:30am ndbob:

wow - had no idea that Eric Bentley recorded
  11:31am Van in DC:

oooh! Band names? "Arithmetic of his soul" or! "not calculated" or! "dropped connection = relevance lag" Nice!
  11:32am Matt from Springfield:

Brecht music is always very dramatic and a bit of campiness thrown in as well.
Ergo, I think a "good" track to play on WFMU would be someone reading Brecht songs in a monotone. I'll get started on that :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
I adore Eric Bentley. He has recorded numerous LPs for Folkways. He did an album of the poems of Wolf Biermann that I treasure.
  11:32am still b/p:

Who's up to composing Relevance Lag lyrics to the tune of Vatican Rag?
  11:34am Matt from Springfield:

@still b/p: Oooh! I'll get started on that too! :D
  11:37am Carmichael:

Genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!
  11:37am ndbob:

@Doug sounds great! I'm familiar with him primarily as a translator
  11:38am kat330:

Sorry for my lag, now -- phone call (annoying one to boot) interruption.
@sb/p: I try NEVER to damage a rhyme OR a rhythm. :)

Hi, BUK!
  11:39am kat330:

How about the band name Oooh! ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

If I don't get a copy of this Lonnie Holley record to give away during WFMU's spring Marathon, I am going to cry like a baby.
  11:41am Uncle Michael:

It's astonishing.
  11:41am Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: "2-4-6-8/Time to transubstantiate!" is the "best worst" rhyme ever!
  11:42am kat330:

Is this like what was done with R.L. Burnside? Love it!
  11:42am Brian in UK:

@still b/p we have a comedy programme over here called 'I'm Sorry I Havn't a Clue' One silly round is to sing one song to the tune of an other.

  11:42am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Does Dust-to-Digital send out free promos to radio stations? That's the easiest way to come by prizes.
  11:43am kat330:

I've heard that program(me) and quite enjoyed it.
  11:44am Brian in UK:

Buddy's lost cousin.
  11:45am Carmichael:

My favorite song with re-purposed lyrics is "Stairway to Gilligan's Island". Imagine Robert Plant wailing about a 3-hour tour.
  11:45am Matt from Springfield:

Stick to our pop culture, Lonnie! Stick it!!
  11:45am Brian in UK:

@kat love 'quite' so English. QI anyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

@Matt from S
Dust-to-Digital DOES send WFMU promo copies and it is INCREDIBLY GENEROUS with extra copies for our fundraiser. It's sad but true, a small hardly profitable label like D-t-T is hugely forthcoming with loot to help out WFMU and much, much larger labels with actual and sizable promotional budgets have abandoned us.
  11:46am still b/p:

Crazy trivia: when the movie The Conqueror, with the Duke as Genghis Khan, was made in the 50s, location shooting was downwind of nuke bomb test site, and among the people working on the movie, cancers developed at about triple the normal occurrence.

I twist, stuff and abuse meter sooo terribly....no one else would be able to do the forcing necessary to deliver the pieces aloud. I've given birth to many blivots.
  11:46am kat330:

@BUK: That'd be bloody brilliant!
  11:49am kat330:

@s b/p: The main reason I'm drawn to limerick and haiku formats is the stringent structure. I *need* structure (and routine). :)
  11:49am kat330:

better late than never? happy holidays drumma et al!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Doug Schulkind:

Happy holland daze!
  11:52am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Ironic but true. Probably because the monostrosity labels only care about the next "big" deal and disregard listeners (who are only good for their money anyway). D-t-D knows that keeping your stuff out there helps listeners (Heaven forbid!) to *enjoy* your products.
  11:52am kat330:

Thanks for the ear treats, Doug! Philo and I wish all of you drummers a safe and happy weekend and holidays! May you receive whatever you truly need the most for 2013!

Thanks for the great show, per usual, Doug.

  11:57am Walter Brennan:

Dang ya, hang ya,
Keep the doomy shit away with Rangda!

  12:01pm Matt from Springfield:

I feel GOOD too!

Thanks Doug for playing good tunes, that stave off the Mayapocalypse!
Bye everyone! See you next year!
  12:02pm Carmichael:

Must have missed it, kat. Was there a civil rights leader, last name Carmichael? I believe so.
  12:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Stokely Carmichael.
Not the Irish kind, at least not as far as I know...
