cheri, you are the only commenter on the station that does nothing but embarrass the nice DJs by never doing anything except to appear and demand that they all answer the same pointless question every single show for a month at a time. -- lump of coal for you on *my* list, babee!

Hello and glad tidings to all who are recent arrivals. This has been one heck of a second set so far; keeping me from getting some shut-eye
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:21am Droll:

Fred, There's the tub with stick and string they play in that style when there's no upright/double bass. I don't know what it's called.
Sun. 12/23/12 1:22am fred von helsing:

shuteye? it's 820 in hellsinki and the sun is trying hard to climb the horizon
Sun. 12/23/12 1:22am Holly in NC:

Hi Matt! Joe, loved the Marty Robbins. Will be quiet for a bit as when reaching for my FM cover cd spilled ~20 oz cold h2o all over myself, my pillows, my comforter, my evening's reading material...so regrouping is taking a while & I'm quite chilly. erf.
Sun. 12/23/12 1:22am Matt from Springfield:

"Cut My Friend Down"!! I loved this the first time I heard it--Mr. Schaubroeck is due for a revival.
Sun. 12/23/12 1:24am fred von helsing:

@droll jeez I have no idea either
Sun. 12/23/12 1:24am Matt from Springfield:

@Droll: It's called: Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas!
"Ain't No Hole In The Washtub"!

Hi Holly! Sounds rough, hope you can get dried and settled before bedtime.
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:24am Liis:

Sun. 12/23/12 1:26am fred von helsing:

oh baby I am so proud
Sun. 12/23/12 1:26am Holly in NC:

@matt - LOVE Emmitt Otter!
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:27am Looms:

Is it the CD skipping or my connection going mad?
Sun. 12/23/12 1:27am fred von helsing:

LIIS now what do you think of bluegrass
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:27am Droll:

Holly needs a 20oz sippy cup. I think they're called "Sports Bottles".
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:28am T-Zero:

@Looms, I wasn't sure if it was skipping or supposed to sound like that
Avatar Sun. 12/23/12 1:28am Joe McG:

@Looms: Yep, got a skipper from the FMU library. Luckily, I had my copy of "The Future Is Unwritten" handy...
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:30am Liis:

i have to say i have allways loved it. sadly estonians doesnt do that kind of music much... they should
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:31am Looms:

That reminds me that I enjoyed Global A Gogo when it came out. Will clean the dust from my copy later, thanks!
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:31am David Knight:

Acknowledging Strummer's passing...sweet.
Sun. 12/23/12 1:32am fred von helsing:

is there any kind of folk festival in eesti. there has to be.
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:32am Looms:

A film about Joe Strummer?!?
Sun. 12/23/12 1:33am Holly in NC:

@droll, oh, have 3 of those - 1 in car, 2 in sink. What's horrible is that I NEVER keep open drinkware near bed after that spider-drinking experience, but spiders are dead/sleeping/whatever they do when it's cold, so figured OK. Foegot about my inate klutziness.
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:34am G:

Here's some info about Joe Strummer's radio show:

  Sun. 12/23/12 1:34am Liis:

ofcourse we have big folk festivals, but thats different..
Sun. 12/23/12 1:35am Matt from Springfield:

DJ Julie has played Darkwave from Lithuania or Latvia, and a very strange and wonderful acoustic piece by Lau Nau from Finland--Eesti folk would go well after that.
Sun. 12/23/12 1:36am Matt from Springfield:

Woooo! SF!
The threatened 45s WILL transpire! :)
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:36am G:

it says free; there seem to be other free strummer radio show sites
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:37am Droll:

Holly, Spider-drinking experience? Thanks, I wasn't planning on sleeping tonight anyhow.

Speaking of which, why is G still here? Ahhh, the "5 hours to go, how can I be late?" approach.
Sun. 12/23/12 1:37am fred von helsing:

What do you think of it?
Sun. 12/23/12 1:38am fred von helsing:

But Julie knows everything :)
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:38am G:

yes, i sleep derive myself to make the empty 7AM Sunday road a little more of a surreal experience. caffeine and nicotine will help too
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:39am KP:

This is Rotary Connection?
Sun. 12/23/12 1:39am Holly in NC:

@droll - to paraphrase Katy Perry, I swallowed a spider and I did NOT like it. Never, ever, ever drink out of an opem cup in the dark!!!!!!!
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:39am Looms:

Got it, "The Future Is Unwritten". Completly missed it :(
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:40am G:

  Sun. 12/23/12 1:40am G:

Thanks g-d it wasnt a Honking Palmetto Bug
Sun. 12/23/12 1:41am Matt from Springfield:

@KP: Arlington is good for bars on the weekends and some restaurants--also dense and hard to drive around/park in.
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:41am sweet cheri:

joe you're off to a great start on the christmas single file,, i'm loving it!! merry christmas joe!
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:41am Looms:

@Joe McG: be sure I will.
Sun. 12/23/12 1:42am fred von helsing:

I think WFMU has more bizarre Christmas music than everyone else combined ('cept maybe soma.fm)
  Sun. 12/23/12 1:43am Droll:

Holly, Message received loud and clear. I'm mentally archiving that next to the Texan who told me to always, always, always shake out your boots before putting them on.

  Sun. 12/23/12 1:48am Looms:

This is excellent!

  Sun. 12/23/12 2:00am KP:

  Sun. 12/23/12 2:02am sweet cheri:

  Sun. 12/23/12 2:02am G:

Mary Margaret O'Hara, like Lindi from Toronto. She put out a whole Xmas EP in 91.
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:03am T-Zero:

G'night! Happy holidays all...
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:03am KP:

I already got anew iPhone! Beyond that I can only hope for more important things. Thanks, Cheri.
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:04am KP:

See ya T!
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:04am Droll:

G, Autotune is here to stay, along with sampling, drum machines, etc. In 40 years musicians won't need to practice at all. You won't even recognize it.
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:05am Liis:

fred is an evil scientist, be careful
Sun. 12/23/12 2:05am Matt from Springfield:

YO - KO! YO - KO!
@KP: By the Torpedo Factory? Or somewhere else? There's generally a lot of good places by the Alexandria waterfront.
Sun. 12/23/12 2:06am Matt from Springfield:

Have a great holiday, TZ!
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:06am slugluv1313:

aw, always loved this Yoko :)
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:08am KP:

Torpedo factory is cool. But this across harbor where they have fairly big and crappy concerts,
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:08am G:

@Droll: I'd guess that yes, electronic music making will be even way huger than now, but Autotune will be "warm" sounding nostalgia, like 80s computer effects seem to many people now. Someone on an FMU stream will be curating a show of autotone artistry done in that oldskool early-century way...
Sun. 12/23/12 2:08am Holly in NC:

Never mind, I got my cold lazy butt out of bed, here's link:

Look for Orquesta Casino: El Boogie De Bertha
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:09am KP:

Yeah I'll hit torpedo factory area too. Real nice here.
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:10am G:

I'll be on the Alexandria waterfront on the 24th, if I can just see this backup end so I can get to bed...
Sun. 12/23/12 2:13am Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings Joe and all the listeners.
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:13am sweet cheri:

holly i hope you have a great christmas and a wonderful new year.
Sun. 12/23/12 2:15am The Fat Man:

Who let Hallmark Cards in here? :)
Avatar Sun. 12/23/12 2:17am Joe McG:

Thanks, Holly! Hey, Richard, welcome!
Sun. 12/23/12 2:18am Holly in NC:

Best to you also, Cheri (and everyone else in the Surface Noise family)
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:19am Droll:

G, I hope you're wrong. I think that sort of signature overkill is rejected over time and not every fad is remembered after 40 years. Autotune is likely to be remembered like crooning is thought of today: a way to sound silly and dated. Volume wars (Wall-to-wall limiting) will also be remembered without affection as the sound of the early 21st century. I doubt collectors will archive the 297 overloads-per-second MP3s for the sound.
Sun. 12/23/12 2:20am Matt from Springfield:

I've got a somewhat early start tomorrow, so off to bed now!
Thanks Joe for an excellent Christmas show!

And since this is the last live playlist I expect to have fun on for the next days, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a happy and safe holiday time! Enjoy yourselves in Alexandria VA, KP and G!
Avatar Sun. 12/23/12 2:21am Joe McG:

Have a great holiday, Matt!
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:21am Looms:

I confess I'd be happy to come abroad and attend the Arrington de Dionyso WFMU support gig if I had the money (and the visa). Will we Europeans enjoy it live online?
Sun. 12/23/12 2:21am Holly in NC:

I like this, new to me, but sounds old, yes?
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:22am G:

Here's the thing. It's part of cultural history, and with the passage of time people therefore tend to just let it be what it was rather than rooting against it, as we are likely to do in our current context.

When a given world series or super bowl is over, people just let it be what it was, and don't bother rooting for something that can't be changed any more.
Avatar Sun. 12/23/12 2:23am Joe McG:

@Looms: No, I'm sorry, we're not broadcasting it. We want people to come out and buy tickets! We may record it and broadcast it later, though. I hope we do.
Sun. 12/23/12 2:24am Matt from Springfield:

You as well, Joe! Good night!
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:24am Looms:

I hear you, Joe.

Sun. 12/23/12 2:44am Brian in UK:

You don't get many Pickwick records on this station. Looks like a belting mix.
Have a fab Christmas one & all whoevers left standing.
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:46am Looms:

You mean still standing, Brian? ;)
Happy Christmas back to you!
Avatar Sun. 12/23/12 2:46am Joe McG:

@Brian: I killed 'em all off with that morose British folk rock set. No offense!
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:46am Droll:

I'm glad I stayed up for Medicine! Thanks for (my) wonderful closer.
Avatar Sun. 12/23/12 2:48am Joe McG:

No problem, Droll. Thanks for dropping in and happy holidays to you!
Sun. 12/23/12 2:50am Brian in UK:

@Looms I need a Frenchman to correct my English. Thanks Looms. Good times.
Sun. 12/23/12 2:52am Brian in UK:

Joe we are smiling inwardly. Ha ha.
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:54am Looms:

Official statement: I listened to Joe's whole show live for the time in my life! And I loved it. Happy Chrismas!

@Brian: you're too kind, you know how I'm able to hurt your mothertongue, Sir!
  Sun. 12/23/12 2:58am amEdeo:
