Hello and howdy do.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:02pm rrg:

Problems? Use basic mode.

But I never have problems.

'Tis the week's turningcorner!
Hi Irwin! Greetings, Irwinners!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:03pm G:

A little harmonic distorrtion on the loose never hurt anyone.

Are they going to hop on pop?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:04pm G:

@rrg: It *is* possible to have problems without realizing you are having them...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:05pm Matt from Springfield:

The Bonzo Dog Band sang of "the Canyons of Your Mind", I'm sure that would also explain the Kansas of your spleen.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:05pm rrg:

I love Dr. S. I have in fact been listening to the soundtrack of "Dr. T" this week. Such great stuff.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:05pm PMD:

I'm listening LIVE and so excited to be doing so. Hi Irwin!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:06pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: One man's audio chaos maker is another man's freeform fighter...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:06pm G:

@Matt: Does that mean when this show starts we are all officially over the hill?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:06pm Matt from Springfield:

PMD! Long time no!
How are ya doing!
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:06pm rrg:

Can you PROVE that you're listening live?
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:06pm Irwin:

'Lo, PMD. And the whole virtual gang.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:07pm phat:

always dug Teen Town, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:07pm G:

Maybe we should make gang gestures now and post them to FB
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:07pm rrg:

Who you callin' virtual? I'm REAL, man. Don't know about these other guys.

@G: For the "turningcorner"? Well at least for the M-to-Fers here, W would be the turningcorner.
Avatar Wed. 1/9/13 3:10pm Parq:

I'm No. 2, and I'm hardly trying.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:10pm Michael:

Howdy Irwin. Howdy listeners. Certainly sounds like that Teen Town.
Avatar Wed. 1/9/13 3:10pm Parq:

Dang. Figures.
Avatar Wed. 1/9/13 3:13pm Parq:

And a warm wve of the hand to PMD.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:13pm Mike East:

I'm an M-er F-er
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:13pm G:

@Matt: If as you imply we're now in the latter half of humpday, then hexamerally we are over the hill and careening down the other side
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:15pm PMD:

Aw, shucks... Finally got a temp job at which I can listen live! Hope everyone is well. And Parq, you are too funny. I'm #3.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:16pm Stevie Wonder:

You are the Kansas of my spleen
That's why I'll never stay around

And if there's no snow where you're at? Sled down anyway!
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:20pm still b/p:

Bile E. Coyote roams the Kansas of my spleen.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:21pm PMD:

These speakers suck though. Irwin's voice is not as melodious as usual. Or does he have a cold?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:21pm Matt from Springfield:

@PMD: Splendid luck! Glad you're back.
@Mike: That's why I chose "M-Fer" for us working stiffs, it's the new L7, and BETTER!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:22pm G:

The Codger must have helped him haul all that Patti Page. Although Patti was jailbait when OC was in his prime or primo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:23pm Matt from Springfield:

MP3s are probably the "lightest", at least because of their reduced size and compression. WAV files are rather large, and seem to have an "emptiness" like multiple unused channels on them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:25pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: Too young, too pop for him, but the Codger probably enjoyed Patti nonetheless. Just like when Irwin played Miley Cyrus, that's like when the Codger listened to Patti Page, I bet.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:25pm rrg:

I'm an ALAC man myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:26pm Matt from Springfield:

I like this arrangement, different minimalist-folk for Sexton, but it's great. I like most of Sexton's stuff.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:26pm rrg:

"Used to"? I like to think that Irwin is not yet done playing Miley Cyrus.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:28pm rrg:

Give me a British accent and you've already 50% got me.

I'm such a pushover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:28pm Miley:

He better, he better, you bet ;) ;*
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:29pm G:

Caravan? IC continues his slowmotion forgotten prog excavation
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:30pm Matt from Springfield:

Dang it rrg! She's old news! Ancient history! Over! Not that Miley *needed* to be to begin with, but she's pushing 20 now. Time for the next Disney starlet to be selected and produced.

But to be fair, I'm also such a pushover. British accent >= 50% of getting me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:31pm Matt from Springfield:

Wooo! Tame Impala's reached the school chorus circuit! Maybe we could have other Langley School Project(s) from PS 22!
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:33pm rrg:

Disney's stable is always full with new starlets. Bridgit Mendler, Debbie Ryan, many more.

I don't like the word "stable" in this context. Let's pick another one.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:35pm rrg:

I thought for a second it might be the same school for which Gilbert is doing the comedy benefit (his daughter's school), but that's PS 11, not PS 22 (just checked).
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:36pm rrg:

Word. I don't like the WORD "stable" (not "world").

Maybe Irwin can fix that for me.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:37pm seang:

i love me some vapid starlets
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:37pm Matt from Springfield:

There's something I like about Tony Mason-Cox. I don't know why, but I do.

Lord KITCHENER! I know why I like him!
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:38pm Irwin:

rrg: fixed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:38pm G:

Irwin is no editing slave, rrg. Honestly! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:39pm Matt from Springfield:

His Lordship is correct: no use in a needle, if it's too soft!
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:40pm rrg:

@Matt: You like him because he has a pretend British name.

@Irwin: Thanks.

@G: But it's IMPORTANT.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:42pm jan:

What is a record and what is a needle?
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:44pm pierre:

Still here… Still listening…

Bonsoir Irwin, bonsoir listeners I haven't said bonsoir to yet
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:44pm rrg:

I say it's crackle, the crispy sound. You've gotta have crackle or the clock's not wound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:44pm Matt from Springfield:

Doug Schulkind on the other hand, is an editing slave! Make a typo sometime and you'll see! ;)

@rrg: I do like that he took the name of a particular British general, but Calypsonian and dub performers are BIG on British honorifics. As they should be, it cements their status as fine musicians.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:48pm Irwin:

Can someone explain this song/show for me (Kids in Motion)?
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:48pm common:

holy shit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:48pm G:

@jan: an adequately rigid needle can help a disc get its groove back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:49pm Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: 80s kids show I presume. Was it a kids exercise show? It's certainly no "Kids Incorporated", maybe a ripoff of that.
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:50pm Michael:

I saw a lot of kids tv when my daughter was growing up but this came after or before so I got nothing Irwin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:50pm CPS:

"Greg & Steve"? What the hell are they doing? And where are their last names? Find those out, and run a check on them...
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:51pm Manolo:

I love you Irwin
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:53pm G:

nosejob.com? can you give me an example?
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:54pm rrg:

I giggle, I laugh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:54pm G:

Donate your nose today
  Wed. 1/9/13 3:56pm Arnie Pectin:

Kars for Noses?
Avatar Wed. 1/9/13 3:56pm Parq:

Was there a car alarm outside my window or was it part of this remix? I honestly couldn't tell, and it stopped before I could turn the flash player off to check.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 3:57pm Irwin:

AGM conveys via email: "Please let commenters G & Matt know AGM/Droll dedicated this to them, and I'll catch up on the archives later."
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:03pm rrg:

My childhood too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:04pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, thank you much Droll!
(I like A Great Many of your projects as well!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:04pm G:

I notice there's never a KARS4KIDS jingle sample. Those dudes are legal flamethrowers when it comes to I.P. :-)
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:04pm pierre:

I only get 1% of what's happening here, but I don't mind, I would even go for a "I like it" kind of feeling.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:04pm rrg:

I always wanted to multitrack myself singing "Doggie in the Window". Just for me and my friends.

I never did. But I still might.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:06pm rrg:

Omnes Gallia in tres partes divisa est.

I think. I used to know this stuff cold.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:06pm G:

She had enough gall to be divided into three parts!

And she's going through all principal 'parts' of the verb "love"
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:08pm rrg:

Okay, so we're both showing off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:09pm G:

It's from the start of Caesar's Gallic Wars, which is the first prose they made you read. Simple, plain style.

Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres...
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:09pm rrg:

Did you buy these singles when they were new? Or are they later-in-life collector acquisitions?
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:11pm Snortley:

Semper ubi sub ubi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:11pm Matt from Springfield:

And woah! I'm already havin' a ball with "Learnin' My Latin"! This is wonderful!

And, comes from a time when this song had relevance, when many schools still required Latin courses. That would have made a great Sesame Street/Electric Company song, if those HIPPIES gave a crap about Latin! Hmmph!
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:12pm rrg:

I love this song as sung by Whispering Jack and by Ruth Etting (and played on the Codger's program at one time or another). Never heard Patti's version before.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:13pm northguineahills:

I like Sesame Street's take on this song ("Danger Sign")
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:14pm rrg:

I remember it (and I'm not checking, now) as "Tota Gallia in tres partes divisa est".
Avatar Wed. 1/9/13 4:14pm Parq:

This set is wonderful, and all the more welcome in that Monica's Patty P tribute got delayed for a week.
Avatar Wed. 1/9/13 4:14pm Parq:

<coughs> Patti.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:14pm rrg:

They don't teach Latin anymore?

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:14pm Matt from Springfield:

@pierre: A small .01 sample will not yield you any understanding of all this, but it will give you a tremendous feeling of delight!

Et bonjour, ami gaulois! ;)
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:15pm rrg:

Irwin can fix that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:15pm G:

@rrg: I looked up the De Bello Gallcio incipit on Perseus (online classical studies text site) to check my never perfect memory :-)
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:16pm rrg:

So Monica will do another Patti tribute? In that case I will set up my VCR to record it. So to speak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:16pm G:

Gallico. Stupid digits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:17pm G:

@rrg: Trip down memory lane?

  Wed. 1/9/13 4:17pm rrg:

I still think that's what those damned Jesuits taught me. But they could have been simplifying it for some reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:19pm Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: It's still an elective in most places, but of course you'd have to fit it in among all the other electives you want to take and required courses, so the majority don't. Particularly since room for only one foreign language is usually factored into the syllabus.

But like cursive writing nowadays, when something's no longer required, watch competency in the topic (and in general) plummet in coming years.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:19pm rrg:

They made me read Catullus, I remember that. For "college credit".
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:20pm G:

I'm after the transition you were before, rrg. I didn't get Latin in grade school. Took ancient languages to study literature, as a grad student...
Avatar Wed. 1/9/13 4:20pm Parq:

Old Cape Cod! <sighs dreamily>
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:20pm G:

Catullus has dirty bits. Not as many as Martial. :)
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:21pm rrg:

And she really did this before Mary Ford and Les Paul?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:22pm G:

Background singers cost too much money, so I read in a PP obit :-)
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:22pm Mike Fun:

Her voice reminds me a little of Karen Carpenter.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:22pm rrg:

I didn't have it in grade school, only in high school.

It wasn't elective, either. It was required. But that was no surprise at the time.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:23pm 404 error -- page not found:

Times have changed, haven't they....you think if I played Black Sabbath to Patti Paige at a sufficient volume, her head would explode?
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:23pm Carmichael:

HI Irwin and others. I had to take Latin in grade school. Surprisingly useful, even today.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:24pm rrg:

This is a great set. A lot of these I haven't heard before (and I thought I had a couple two three PP albums).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:24pm G:

@Mike Fun: OTHER WAY AROUND! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:24pm Matt from Springfield:

I never took a Latin class (sondern wählte ich Deutsch), but I kept it up as a hobby with a friend who took it (before taking Japanese afterwards). So while not knowing conjugations and stuff offhand (See: The Life of Brian!) Latin's one of those languages you haven't studied but still know a bit about.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:24pm Alison Porchnik:

Damn, I missed the SelectNose4Kids spot!
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:25pm Mike Fun:

Really? You mean the '50s came before the '70s? Geez, thanks! I never knew!
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:25pm rrg:

This has enough surface noise to please even the Codger.

  Wed. 1/9/13 4:26pm Mike East:

really enjoying this Patti Page tribute, Irwin. Here voice(s) is/are like candy in my ears.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:26pm Mike East:

...but less sticky
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:26pm rrg:

It'll be in the archive, AP. I'm sure of it.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:27pm Alison Porchnik:

RRG, I was lucky enough to get a pre-hear last night. But it's not the same as hearing it "live on the air"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:28pm Matt from Springfield:

I'll have to ask if my Grandma remembers this "Mama From The Train"--she's a lifelong Pennsylvanian.

And though not always "cold", the English of PA Dutch descendants remains quaint to this day. Prepositions especially are not what you'd expect in Standard American English.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:28pm rrg:

But the Codger wouldn't have approved because I'm sure it's an LP and not a 78.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:28pm rrg:

So it WAS a 78! I stand corrected.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:29pm rrg:

Well, sit.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:30pm david:

Did that last song inspire the Danny Devito film?
Wed. 1/9/13 4:31pm Listening Out There:

I was waiting for you to mention Mary Ford, Irwin. Really, I was. It's similar stuff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:31pm Matt from Springfield:

Also cool about Sidney Bechet--he was a talent for sure.
Wed. 1/9/13 4:31pm Listening Out There:

Ah. What is "cassette"?
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:31pm Alison Porchnik:

I think it inspired the title. Hitchcock inspired the story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:32pm G:

quoth wiki: "The title comes from Patti Page's 1956 hit song, "Mama from the Train (A Kiss, A Kiss)". The film was inspired by the 1951 Alfred Hitchcock thriller Strangers on a Train, which also plays a role in the film."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:32pm Matt from Springfield:

And Patti's got Ken beat -- Boiler CHORUS!!
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:32pm PMD:

Avatar Wed. 1/9/13 4:33pm Unclear on the concept:

This isn't a waltz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:33pm Matt from Springfield:

@LOT: I think, I had a dish called "cassette", or something like it, at a French restaurant..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:34pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey, is this the SAME backing track as Andy Williams' version?? Was it from the same label, or concurrent singles?
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:34pm Carmichael:

Is this still Caravan?
Wed. 1/9/13 4:34pm Listening Out There:

Cool. Have not heard PP's version of this. I only know versions of Andy Williams and The English Beat.....
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:35pm rrg:

I have this! Not so scratchy, though.

I was gonna play it. I think I still will.

Think I like Andy Williams' version a little more, but this is also great.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:35pm PMD:

Yes, really nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:36pm Matt from Springfield:

"Written by Jerome "Doc" Pomus and Mort Shuman, first made popular by Andy Williams in a 1963 record release" -- mentions Patti has sung it, but doesn't say when.

Also of note: "In one of Kermit Schafer's blooper books, it says that an announcer introduced the song as "Can't Get Used to Using You"."
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:37pm rrg:

The Bronx is up and the Battery's down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:37pm Matt from Springfield:

Compare these verses with: "The Spinach Song", by Julia Lee and Her Boyfriends.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:37pm rrg:

I speak from personal experience.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:39pm Alison Porchnik:

@Matt- How about "All That Beef and Big Ripe Tomatoes"?
Avatar Wed. 1/9/13 4:40pm Parq:

@Matt from S, 4:36 - I think it just means that the Andy was a cheap cover version. Who knew that even Patti P had too much soul for some people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:41pm G:

@Carmichael: These are actually outtakes from Pages from Topographic Oceans. Anderson's voice sounded *so* feminine sometimes.

Why NOT play "Doggie in the Window"?

Come on, it's a fine song. "He needs a little doggie to protect him."

rrg- Please don't encourage Irwin to torture us. His pal is Satan.
Wed. 1/9/13 4:45pm Listening Out There:

The arrangement for "Down the Trail..." does sound like "Doggy," doesn't it? Maybe they're from the same session...

Mine too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:46pm Matt from Springfield:

@AP: Haven't heard that one, but I loves the entendres of Julia Lee! Will check out.

Oh! So *that's* where our ol' Pal gets his selections from, his ol' Pal...
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:46pm Laura L:

I second rrg on that--I can't estimate how many times I played "Doggie," alternating with Soupy Sales's "Do the Mouse." C'mon, play that Doggie song.
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:47pm Alison Porchnik:

If that song is played I'll have to disappear. Not that it's anyone's loss but mine (once the song ends).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 4:47pm G:

Doggie, 4:57, I called it :P

@Parq: I think it's saying the Andy version was out first (but of course, Andy double-tracked his vocals. Who does he have to thank for THAT, eh Patti!)
  Wed. 1/9/13 4:49pm rrg:

AP, it's 2 minutes and 30 seconds long. When it starts, turn off WFMU for that long. Then come back.

You assume Irwin will do your bidding, just because you're both pals of Satan.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/9/13 5:22pm Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: I should mention that last week I was at a Kohl's store, tracking down a number of things and hearing their piped music of inoffensive, palatable A/C hits of "decade, decade, and TODAY!" for a good while. Typical of stores...When all of a sudden the next song is a great pop song that I recognize: this is a WFMU song! I couldn't remember the name but had learned it through your playing it.

I looked it up -- sure enough Camera Obscura's "French Navy"! In the middle of an otherwise easy listening dreckfest of piped music! Then it went back to the usual stuff after that but what an inspiring gem thrown in the middle! There's a ghost in the machine, I hope!
  Wed. 1/9/13 5:22pm Irwin:

Laura: Got 'em all. Did I miss anything else?
  Wed. 1/9/13 5:24pm Laura L:

One more--"With" doing in "Music Sounds Better With You"--get that big W down! Thank you!
  Wed. 1/9/13 5:24pm rrg:

Laura, would you lowercase "With" in "Music Sounds Better With You"?

I would. But I can be talked out of it.
  Wed. 1/9/13 5:25pm rrg:

Game on.

No, just kidding. I'm a sweetie. There's no game.

  Wed. 1/9/13 5:51pm Laura L:

And Satan made you upper case "Of" and "The" in the BÖC listing and miss putting the umlaut on the album title there. I'm uncomfortable about the lack of commas in "Rain Rain Rain" too... @rrg, I know it's all in good copyediting fun.
  Wed. 1/9/13 5:53pm Irwin:

Rain Rain Rain is the actual title. The B'OC screwups are fixed.
