West Philadelphia Orchestra at Golden Fest 2012

For the fifth year, TSP presents a live broadcast from the massive annual Balkan and East European music and dance bacchanal, the Golden Festival.

It's a two night affair - tonight is the second night - at the kitschy and fabulous Grand Prospect Hall, 263 Prospect Ave, Brooklyn.

We'll bring you the action live from 6-9 pm at the Grand Ballroom stage, one of four stages with dozens of bands playing from 6 pm until 2 am.

Tickets, available at the door, include a fabulous Balkan / Mediterranean buffet dinner home-made on-site. (Beer is extra - but they usually have great East European dark beer!)

Over sixty bands will play on the four festival stages - Grand Ballroom, Chopin Room, Atrium and Rainbow Room - but the bands playing at the Grand Ballroom during the broadcast are:

Raklorom @ 6 pm - All kinds of music in the Romani language performed by NYU students and community members (both Roma and non-Roma)

Floricica Oltenea @ 6:30 pm - Romanian dance on the Jaw Harp

Brazda @ 6:40 pm - 8-piece Balkan band playing fresh arrangements of traditional repertoire from Bulgaria, FYR Macedonia, Greece, Serbia, and beyond.

Milo Destanovski @ 7:10 pm - Macedonian gajda (bagpipe)

Michael Winograd and the Klezmer Orchestra International @ 7:25 pm - Klezmer music for dancing

Raya Brass Band @ 7:55 pm - Music from the Balkans with an American pulse played by a village style quintet consisting of trumpet, sax, accordion, tuba and tupan.

Lyuti Chushki @ 8:25 pm - Traditional Bulgarian music on kaval, gaida (bagpipe), gudulka, tambura and tupan ), all of which serve to accompany the unique Bulgarian vocal style which has a beauty on its own.

Big thanks to Golden Festival founders and organizers the Zlatne Uste Balkan Brass Band and the festival committee; co-host and tech guru Irene Trudel; and to the rest of our our illustrious crew:

Mark Koch
Juan Aboites
Chuck Dean
Dan Barker
Jason Sigal

I'm guessing this might be an affiliate or offshoot of, or hommage to, the Golden Stag Festival (Romania)???

en.wikipedia.org...

At any rate, nice sounds so far...
  6:39pm Brute Force:

Whenever the Golden Festival thinks Brute Force must appear, it will help raise consciousness of whomever has also appeared, especially the audience.

This is brilliant....

I now know why my mother took away my jaw harp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Rob Weisberg:

Re: Golden Stag Festival - well, not exactly the same, but Zlatne Uste Brass Band, organizers of the festival have played at the Guča Trumpet Festival, also known as the Dragačevo Assembly, in Serbia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Rob Weisberg:

Well Cory, that was nothing - I once did an all jawharp show on FMU (with guest Lena Strayhorn) - - wfmu.org... . FMU DJ Bryce (Friday afternoons) also plays a mean jaw harp - ask him sometime!

The Golden Fest from the Grand Prospect Hall! It made our dreams come true!

www.youtube.com...

I imagine many NYers over 40 remember that ad running at 2-3AM in the 80s :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Rob Weisberg:

Thanks everyone and yes, you must watch the over-the-top ad for the over-the-top Grand Prospect Hall!

I went last night - it was a TOTAL blast! I can't wait for next year! Sad I'm not there now! How come you don't broadcast the whole thing/! I'd be listening until 2 AM then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Cory:

Great show!! thanks
  11:28am Leah:

Did you record (if not broadcast) the music in the atrium? Wondering if I can re-hear that fantastic music anywhere. Vocal, mostly.
  7:57pm Rob Weisberg:

To Leah - yes, we did record the Atrium performances (as well as performances at the other stages). Many of them will be posted in WFMU's Free Music Archive http://www.freemusicarchive.org although I don't know yet by what date they will be posted.
