Feel for you, kata. I think my worst food mishap was when we had just had the sewage and water systems in our apartment building renovated. Went to strain my pasta, turned on the tap, and the water coming out of the tap and all over my pasta was a black, gunky mess. However, being a broke-ass student at the time, I just let the water run until it was clear and then washed the pasta off and ate it anyway.

As far as I know, Glyphs is cheaper than FontLab, and there's a mini-Glyphs which is like $30 but too limited.. Do you like Glyphs @Jan ?

Thanks for the tip @Turnip ! :)
Avatar 12:31pm
Cecile:

Yeah, Duane. I think the denomination she's in won't even allow her to admit she's gay but be celibate without endangering her chance for salvation. You can at least do that in the Catholic Church these days. (So they say. I am skeptical)
Avatar 12:31pm
Cecile:

highly skeptical
Avatar 12:32pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

I like Glyphs. It's easier then FontLab. Font Forge seems to be PC based?
Avatar 12:32pm
Cecile:

Where can you find Glyphs? And does it make sense to get it if you only plan to dabble in font design?
Avatar 12:33pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

@kata: that's just grumpy old me: when resorting to some free font (from dafont or similar site) for a lightweight display serif for some foo-foo title work, it's such a treat if ligatures are included, vs. faking the blends myself... Of course I've never made my own fonts before so I might be talking outta my butt-butt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
tim from champaign:

Damn Duane, you're ruling!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm

@Cecile: indeed, style, draping and colours can sometimes be used to fabulous effect. Case in point: www.huffingtonpost.com...
Avatar 12:34pm
kata:

@Jan - yup, it's sort of PC/Linux based. it was also designed by a retired multi-millionaire non-designer person. So it could use some improvement usability-wise. But I used it for 3 days and got used to it. Had only drawn type in Illustrator before that.
Avatar 12:34pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Glyphs is not *that* cheap, just not as $$ as Font Lab, the free version might do you if you're just making little adjustments

Yep. Rule 1: If you do something other people have done, do it in your own way. In other words, mix your originality into it.
Rule 2: If you directly borrow from someone else, be upfront about it. Don't e.g. change one note and claim that the melody is now completely original (I'm looking at you, Vanilla Ice).
Avatar 1:54pm
Cecile:

Yeah, what Caryn said.
Avatar 1:55pm

Although I think a lot of people are pretty shady/lazy/clueless about giving credit. They won't even do it if it's a component of a creative commons license.
Avatar 1:56pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

You would have been amused Duane, I had a fairly heated (and somewhat tipsy) discussion Friday night about edits and remixes. I was both explaining and defending them to an "originalist"
Avatar 1:57pm
Cecile:

I was crocheting things for charity from Internet patterns for a while, and when I would contact the pattern owner for permission (because I can read) nearly everyone I contacted said I was the first one to do this, and these patterns had thousands of web views. All they asked for was that if you were doing something for charity to let them know first.
Avatar 1:58pm
Cecile:

and no one could manage to do that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
Caryn:

Now, if in an interview or in their sleeve notes, the obvious Pink Floyd influence is mentioned, great, and, I feel, validating of their choice. Even if they would just say, "well, we're huge fans, so maybe we unconsciously put that in there".
Avatar 1:59pm
Cecile:

they should say, "thanks to the first nine Pink Floyd albums, which without we would not exist." hahahahaha
Avatar 2:00pm
Droll:

Who gets to decide if there's enough originality, the original artist or the new one? Listeners? Courts?

And if money is owed, who gets to decide the amount and form of payment (credit or cash royalties)? I'm sure the record labels do not accept attention in lieu of payment, the SCotUS upheld a case against file-sharing music just yesterday.
Avatar 2:03pm
Cecile:

It is a mess, Droll.
I think they should just see samples like guitar picks or violin strings or guitars and figure out a way to ensure a steady, fair payment. Like when you buy photos from a photo service.

There was a great (PBS) film called 'Copyright Criminals' I would Link to for you if my Browser didn't suck.
- It made point that Folk & Bop Traditions were always about Reinterpretting & Quoting - nothing new to Sampling @ all.
- A difference would be that then you still were Quoting - not actually Cutting & Pasting someone's stuff.
- *Then again* - Collage is perfectly Legit Art...It usually doesn't try to hide what it's doing though (on the contrary)...

- Been many cases of Musicians humming tunes to bewildered Judges trying to show Copyright infringement...long before Sampling...

- Funny how 'Record Label' seems like an outdated term!
- They kept CD's @ $16 & tried to stem the tide of changing technology - as if Popular Music & Technology could ever be seperated - pretty much until Steve Jobs took them ny their little hands & lead the way to them (the Corporate people).
- I maintain that History shows that if the means of Music Production - & the means of Music Consumption - are affordable & accessible - Artists make great stuff & People buy a lot of it - !

Duane, I see you played some new Justin Timberlake. I was looking at the CD and the target version has 2 Exclusive tracks - one is called "Body Count". I wonder if that track is JT's foray into Gangster Rap???

I think the girlfriend in the song is waiting for the singer to get done with this song and leave to the parking lot where she and 15 of her best friends will chastise said singer severely.
