Mr. Weisberg!: Very impressed w/ you & Sinfonia @ Finale doing Malian tribute tune! - esp. as a(nother lousy) guitarplayer myself clueless about African styles.

Thank you kindly RR and good evening everyone, stay tuned for a great live set by MAKU Sound System!

...More challenging, of course, to Engineer & Mix several (& exotic?) instruments.
(...Did the Pogues *ever* get a good Live mix?...)

hi rob and fellow listeners (:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Rob Weisberg:

Greetings doca!
  6:29pm Steve Po:

Great Music. Can we hear Gaida's Bint Elbalad off Levantine Indulgence. We just saw her at Lincoln Center on Thursday and she was spellbinding.
Avatar 6:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Nice to hear oud (yes?).
- When lived in Santa Barabara, CA - was a Turkish (style) band - prob. associated w/ UCSB - occasionally played local bookstore for instance - w/ bellydancers! - totally free...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Rob Weisberg:

Steve, glad to hear you enjoyed Gaida's show this week. I shoulda been there myself, she's great... and sure, I can play that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm fred:

Hello Rob, I can't listen because it's too late for my neighbors, but I'm just back from a show you might have liked. Two words: Iranian bagpipes
Avatar 6:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...No Turkish in there - but sounded quite similar?
...Your objective in First Hours to Adjust our Attitude by exhiliration of flight all over the Globe? : ) ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Rob Weisberg:

Oh yes Fred, you have me pegged! I did get to see Iranian piper Saeid Shanbehzadeh and his son in NY a few years ago when they played Globalfest 2009 (they've been back since then too). It was pretty great...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm fred:

That's exactly who I just saw! Funny how close it sounded to the synth in Omar Souleyman's dabke
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm I X Key!:

Rob Weisberg, that performance of yours during the marathon finale was so beautiful it made me cry, & I'm looking forward to getting your premium again this year
  6:56pm Steve Po:

Hey Rob, Thanks for putting that up so quick. You have to make a retraction, though. Bint Elbalad is an original Gaida composition. The Mohammad Abdel Wahab song shares nothing in common, but the title. http://youtu.be/mgZBRjgfF3Y - But check this out, she just did a song called Anfass which was inspired by Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind. She did it at Lincoln Center. It's on iTunes under Anfass and there's a video on YouTube. http://youtu.be/dKlO6I9cDko
Avatar 6:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A bit of a Digression!, but - on subject of synth drone :

...You would think an electronically distorted Guitar would make a more complex-shaped Sound/Sine Wave - but it actually makes a more regular one by chopping off the top & bottom ; The only instruments that make 'perfect' regular waves w/ no overtones or such are electronic synths - & flutes! (...or that's the received information, anyway)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Rob Weisberg:

OK thanks Steve, I stand corrected! I'll check out Anfass later... thanks again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Rob Weisberg:

Oh and thank you very much I X Key!
Avatar 7:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...The Malian situation saddens me for one reason because Sufism (Esoteric Mystical Islam) had some influence on my own views as a young 'post-psychedelic' person, shall we say.
- The book 'Dancing in the Streets' by Barbara Ehrenreich is about the History & Meaning of Communal Festival - & touches on how a Conservative & Militant Islam took over - comparable in some ways to what happened to Christianity in the 'West' w/ Calvinism & such...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I am thoroughly loving this set. All that's missing is a warm day and spits of kebab.
Avatar 7:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...always risky to discuss Politrix & Religion - &/or to give a 'Twitter' summary of a Pocket History - but I certainly liked the book - !...
Avatar 7:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & on subject of Sufis - we start w/ 'Dervish Dance'. : )
Avatar 7:37pm Dave B:

just wanted to check in and say thanks and congrats to Mr. W/WFMU for all you do.
Avatar 7:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or was that the last before M.A.K.U. - ?
- Either way - it's Lovely & Kewl...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Rob Weisberg:

Thanks Dave B!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Rob Weisberg:

RR - Dervish Dance was by Mavrika, a very interesting new Greek / Cypriot band based in the UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Rob Weisberg:

Thanks also Pete from Boston and NJ! Two fine places indeed...
  7:50pm jay inthe woods:

Thank you Based God.
Avatar 7:51pm Dave B:

Just scrolling back thru the comments - @Fred and RW - if you're not familiar with Rastak (contemporary Iranian folk stuffs) check it....

youtubes: www.youtube.com...

direct link for D/Ls (in Farsi): rastak.ir...

I'm waiting for my cousins to provide translations....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Rob Weisberg:

Thanks Dave B., I'll check out Rastak!
Avatar 7:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sounds Great ! + + : )

...I am thinking about Os Mutantes~Caetano Veloso - Fela Kuti...This whole idea of Psychedelic AfroBeat makes me smile : )
- even as it makes me think of Phil Ochs noting how we ping-pong (paraphrase) from Activism to Mysticism 'these days'...

- This Performance blows on the warm embers of the Marathon Finale (a Communal Festival - *&* an SocioEconoPolitical Event - however small), it seems to me
- & helps herald Spring
- even in the Year of the Snake...
Avatar 7:58pm Dave B:

BTW - M.A.K.U. is just what I needed this Saturday. But then I'm partial to any troupe with "sound system" in their name!

:-)
