hello Doug & other friends! So happy to be here (listener-wise) & here in Durham physically. House/dog-sitting in a rarified subdivision in a nearby town - so rarefied that it's an hour away, though the town itself is only 15 minutes up road - anyway, had to escape for a few hours. Haven't seen anyone non white - or non blonde - for 3 days. Not kidding! My cool client only lives there as her house burned down last year, and this is where her h/o insurers are "keeping" her. It's a Stepford/Triffid plot, I tell you.

It's sobering because I think mostly area faculty & RTP computer folks live here, & it's very clear how good, kind social-justice folks can absolutely disengage from real word, because their world is so safe. It's like living in a 50s sit com, updated for helio-parents. Huge yards & greenways, no traffic except for the SUVs carefully & slowly returning home at certain prescribed times, kids out on scooters and bikes & skateboards - all helmeted - soccer & lacrosse nets everywhere, bio-degradable pet poop bags & trash bins in every cul sac (that's a very modern innovation!) for all the many leashed at all times dogs..... I mean it sounds perfect, and in many ways it is, and that's the problem.
