hey carmichael! good tuesday all! ready for the hiss-tyeria!

Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Carmichael and listener james!! Back in a minute -- I have to attend to some last-minute caffeine consumption.
  11:50am
Alf from Upstate:

Looking forward to another Tape Hissy Fit!
Avatar 11:52am
Tony Coulter:

Heya, Alf!

i don't get between a dj and his or her caffeine. lose an arm that way!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm
Doug Schulkind:

@ljfw
Or a tone-arm, at least.
Avatar 12:03pm
Tony Coulter:

@ listener james: You just might at that -- I need it bad this morning (it's 9:00 AM over here, of course).

The hissing of spring tapes. Ah, yessssss.

Hey there, Uncle Michael and Doug!!

DAMMIT, Uncle Michael.

I'm sorry, Simon.

Rich in Washington:

Greetings, Tony and everyone!
Avatar 12:09pm
Carmichael:

Did you mention who this guy is, Tony? From the InterTubes, he seems like some one-off self promoted local type.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
Uncle Michael:

@Simon: How did you get the news?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
pacific standard simon:

Guess my first Hinky Dinky live will be my last.
Avatar 12:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey Rich and Pacific Standard Simon!

@ Carmichael: Yeah, he is local -- from NYC.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Uncle Michael:

I think Frank is singing about an exotic dancer.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Uncle Michael:

If it's any consolation. I've been acutely aware that at least one person would be disappointed by the news.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Uncle Michael:

Gotta shower and dash. I'll be back after a bit.

Digging this, Tony. Just goes to show that the main thing that distinguished Larry Fischer was better promotion.
  12:14pm
MrFab:

This is GOLD! Howdy y'all. Just checked and Mr Stola got tons of stuff on itunes and Amazon. Hey, someone's gotta buy it...
Avatar 12:14pm
Tony Coulter:

Cheerio, Uncle Michael. Come back nice and clean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
pacific standard simon:

This music sounds profoundly therapeutic for its maker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Rich in Washington:

I think CDBaby et al are the new places to discover modern equivalents of The Shaggs, etc... It's just hard to find them. There's no real sorting criteria - if you know what I mean.
Avatar 12:18pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Mr. Fab!
Avatar 12:20pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: You nailed it. I found Stola via cdbaby. You actually have to work against their attempts at sorting.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
listener james from westwood:

you could spend a good afternoon wandering through the e-halls of cdbaby and the free music archive. oh, lottery win, why do you mock me with your unlikelihood??
  12:31pm
MrFab:

I've actually gone on CDBaby and tried 'sounds like: Shaggs.' Didn't find much.
Avatar 12:33pm
Tony Coulter:

That's what I mean -- you can't trust cdbaby to do the sorting. They have no clue when it comes to the outsider stuff -- or if they do, they're not letting on.
Avatar 12:38pm
Tony Coulter:

So, yes, finding the gold is a lot of work. I made a real effort seven or so years ago to find weird things on cdbaby, but haven't really tried much since then.
Avatar 12:41pm
Tony Coulter:

They are based in Portland, by the way -- I visited their warehouse a while ago, though I had no time to really look.
Avatar 12:46pm
Tony Coulter:

This Trisha album features maybe the best recording sound-quality I've ever heard.
  12:50pm
MrFab:

Is CDBabys' warehouse open to the public?
Avatar 12:52pm
Tony Coulter:

Not really, I don't think. A friend knows someone who works there, so I was able to get a quick tour.
Avatar 12:52pm
Tony Coulter:

Interestingly, they have a growing vinyl section.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
holland oats:

this song is filling me with feelings
  12:55pm
Agent Cooper:

Is TRISHA the vocalist's name or band moniker?
Avatar 🥁 12:55pm
Snortley:

This appears to be Trisha Blue Water, who has 111 (!) CDRs for sale on Amazon.
Avatar 12:55pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Holland Oats! I won't ask what feelings.
Avatar 12:58pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Agent Cooper and Snortley! Trisha is the vocalist's name (real name Patricia A. Geracitano). Didn't know she also uses the name Trisha Blue Water -- that name doesn't appear on either of her albums I have. But 111 albums sounds like her!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Doug Schulkind:

TRISHA's Native American doppelgänger recorded an album called Maize of Mystery.
  1:01pm
MrFab:

Man, I picked a good day to remember to listen to the Coulter show. this is like Britney Spears backed by Martin Rev - a combo I can't say ever occurred to me before.
Avatar 1:02pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Doug: "Maize of Mystery"? How corny.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Uncle Michael:

Maybe I should try to get Trisha to Studio T.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
holland oats:

it has a kernal of truth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm

@MrFab
Are you on the Drummer Stream mailing list? I send out email alerts when shows are about to come on the stream. You could get a Tony reminder every week. If you're not on the mailing list and would like to be, send a request to drummer (at) wfmu [dot] org
  1:08pm
MrFab:

I'm not on the email list, thanks Doug. Just kinda depends on how crazy things are here in the office.
Avatar 1:08pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Uncle Michael: Sounds like a good idea. Be sure the levels are all wrong and that the equipment is buzzing like crazy, so you can get the authentic Trisha sound.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
Uncle Michael:

Tony, you mean my audio doesn't have to already sound like that , all the time?
Avatar 1:14pm
Tony Coulter:

Nope -- no need to get that ambitious.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
Uncle Michael:

Then I'm there. Mission accomplished, as they say. bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Avatar 1:24pm
Carmichael:

Is this the Frank Benbibi band, Tony?
Avatar 1:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Nope. Uncle Frank = James Gillespy.
Avatar 1:27pm
Carmichael:

Jeez, I'm waaaayyy off. Thanks.
Avatar 1:32pm
Kay:

How much longer is the show?
Avatar 1:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Kay. It lasts until noon.
Avatar 1:33pm
Kay:

From the playlist, looks like I missed a hell of a show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm

Well, half of a show, Kay.

Sorry I ain't talkin' -- the show is my packing and moving soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Rich in Washington:

This is amazing stuff, Tony! Great finds.
Avatar 1:57pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Rich. As I said, I've been less assiduous in seeking this stuff out recently -- that's why these are all from the early 2000s.

"Can't Drink Whiskey No More"? No wonder Frank sounds miserable!

Wow! That horn/organ/whatever solo segment just melted my brain.

I know -- it's amazing. And weirdly beautiful too.

The one good thing about being unemployed? Taxes are really easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
pacific standard simon:

I always wanted to distort like this on my semi-electric ukulele -- so I bought a cheap amp. Trouble is, it made all the chords sound the same. Or maybe that's a feature, not a bug.
Avatar 2:44pm
Tony Coulter:

True enough! Heya, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
pacific standard simon:

I will be unemployed tomorrow (taking a break).
Avatar 2:46pm
Tony Coulter:

That "true enough" was aimed at NGH -- but applies to what you said too, pacific standard simon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm
pacific standard simon:

Got it, Tony. And considering that my main aim was to play late '60s Holy Modal Rounders covers, "feature" it probably is. :)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:51pm
Nardo:

Great show today Tony! Glad I was able to tune in (since no archive). If we make it through all the Stola do we get an Eagle Scout merit badge or something? (I keed, I keed). This stuff is golden.
Avatar 2:53pm
Tony Coulter:

Hola, Nardo! Yep -- you will get your very own Stola badge.
Avatar 2:54pm
northguineahills:

I'm a little slow on the take, but I believe there is a theme to this Tape Hiss.
Avatar 2:55pm
Tony Coulter:

Indeedy, NGH.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm

Keeping in mind that a "Stola badge" is a filthy, traffic-flattened bottlecap with a safety pin epoxied to the back.
Avatar 2:59pm

Thanks for the tunes, Tony!

That was pretty awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm

That Stola stuff was amazing but I must confess that about 3/4ths through, I was ready to confess to being an Al Queda operative.
Avatar 3:00pm

Thanks all!! See you next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm

Thanks, Tony!
See you next week, figuratively speaking.
