@glenn I remember seeing The Band at the Albert Hall and he (Garth) wandered on stage like he came in off the streets playing a sax. Cool as a cucumber. What a band.
Avatar 9:05am glenn:

actually, his parent's rules. "Fearing that his parents would think he was squandering his years of music education by playing in a rock and roll band, Hudson joined the band on the condition he be given the title "music consultant" and that his bandmates each pay him $10 a week for music lessons, allowing him to mollify his family's fears that his education had gone to waste. Revealing a bit of the thinking behind his early fears, in The Last Waltz Hudson told interviewer-director Martin Scorsese: "There is a view that jazz is 'evil' because it comes from evil people, but actually the greatest priests on 52nd Street and on the streets of New York City were the musicians. They were doing the greatest healing work. They knew how to punch through music that would cure and make people feel good."

I'm on the fourth episode of the Sopranos (first season), I only saw a handful of episodes the first time around.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:05am listener james from westwood:

doug, if you want a good series of deep essays on "the sopranos" written during a rewatch (or possibly a 1st-time watch), check out todd vanderwerff's writeups on the onion's av club site. (here's the one on the pilot: www.avclub.com...). alan sepinwall also discusses the series in his recent book about cable dramas in the 2000s.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:11am listener james from westwood:

(for those outside the tri-state area, sepinwall was one of the newark star-ledger's tv writers, now indie iirc. excellent writer; if his sopranos writeups are still up anywhere, also worth chasing down if only b/c it was filmed in his stomping grounds. how he gets his writeups for "mad men" up so quickly i have no idea.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

You know, Listener James, now that you mentioned Sepinwall's pedigree, I'm pretty sure I read his Soprano's pieces contemporaneously. Terrific stuff, if I recall.
