Live performance and chat with Speed the Plough

Naming themselves after an old Scottish folk tune, Speed the Plough played their first gig at Maxwell's in Hoboken in the early 1980's. They also played numerous times on WFMU, and once included WFMU host Frank O'Toole as a bandmate. As the club is closing down at the end of July, StP is rising up again with the release of a retrospective CD and a flurry of live performances. Speed the Plough are Toni Baumgartner: vocals, flute, bells, clarinet & sax; John Baumgartner: vocals, keyboards; Michael Baumgartner: lead guitar, backing vocals; Ed Sefer: electric & acoustic guitars, backing vocals; John Demeski: drums; Cindy Merklee: bass, backing vocals. (Guest guitarist on 1st tune: Mark Francia)

Björk's from Iceland. Iceland doesn't get too hot (aside from volcanoes). Need more ice-related music today.

j bird:

In regards to your comment about Tiny Lights, which other contemporary bands are using cello in their rock music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
Irene Trudel:

@j bird, Espers were one of those (Helena Espvall was in teh band). A co-worker friend (Gretta Cohn) was in a band called Cursive and she played cello. I'm blanking on others at the moment.

Van in DC:

The women, yes: 89. Bonnie Raitt 75. Joni Mitchell
Avatar 1:20pm
Van in DC:

Interestingly, Nancy Wilson of Heart was one of the voters for that list...
Avatar 1:26pm
dc pat:

well she should have been included, don't really like Heart but... Poison Ivy should be on there!!!--how could I forget her?? Carrie Brownstein..I don't know if Marnie Stern has made a mark yet but clearly head and shoulders above most guit players..

@conrad, Dave has "quit" music many times before. I suspect it won't be permanent.
