I used to see live music at the Rhinecliff Hotel (or Hotel Rhinecliff) up here. Now, it's a fancy bar/restaurant and, I guess, a real hotel again. I showed it to my daughter the other day and I would hardly recognize the place.

this week's programming has got me feeling all nostalgic for a pub I've never been to. In a few years when my memory's faded and some stranger mentions Maxwells I'll be like 'yeah I remember that place' and they'll be like 'oh yeah?' and I'll be like 'did you know it used to open at like 5 in the morning for an hour and about 11 at night for the shift change at the Maxwell House coffee place' and they'll be like 'really? I saw the Slits there' and I'll be like 'yeah I remember hearing Typical Girls' there in '06' and we'll have this kind of faux friendship based on lies. it'll be nice. I've never even been to america.

In 1987 my band was scheduled to play a wedding reception there for 2 employees of our record company. After our soundcheck several people with sad faces came into the room and started taking down the decorations and hauling the food away. Seems the Father of the bride died suddenly during the wedding! We drove back to Ohio without playing, in a raging snowstorm.

No music venues around this area besides NYC. That is what makes it super sad. There are rumours that some space will open up in Jersey City.... but I will believe it when I see it. Part of what will be missed is not just the place but the booking of it.

Meghan: when you were in Sydney, did you ever go to the Hopetoun Hotel or Annandale Hotel for gigs? They both closed down in the last couple of years.

The Hopetoun got hit with a bunch of demands by local council to fix their facilities.
The Annandale was very poorly run in my opinion but survived off nostalgia of legends born there.
