Hi Kurt. I guess it's easier to have been everywhere in the Czech Republic.

davex, And just as importantly, we now know there are a few places Johnny hasn't been, or maybe has been but can't pronounce.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
davex:

Droll, and between the two of them (and all the many others who have covered the song), they probably could have pronounced just about anything.
Avatar 3:32pm
glenn:

at the end of hank snow's original version, a chorus of female singers sing "i know someplace you haven't been", which is one of the reasons it's always going to be the best version.

Downloading a crapload of software for work, so, I went out to the plaza to watch the US Open on the big screen for about 15 minutes, oh, I also had a beer. (Not quite beersies when it's just one).

Incidentally, was very excited to receive a swag package from WFMU today. Opened it to find my Best Show swag from the 2012 Marathon. It was nice to finally get it, but now my desire to receive this year's swag has only increased..

Just glanced up, and there's an Eagles documentary on tv. Interesting juxtaposition with this music.

They don't do tapioca over here. This one was plain vanilla. Have a chocolate and a caramel one in the fridge.

Are beer-scented candles a thing that hasn't been invented yet?
Avatar 4:02pm
glenn:

the great new italian place around the corner from me has panacotta with brandied plums. you have no idea how fucking good it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Caryn:

@Ken from HP: had to google it. Apparently there's a bucketload of beer-scented candles on the market. Go forth and shop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
davex:

What will they think of next?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
Caryn:

Hah, one of the manufacturers has candles that smell like whiskey, bacon, "campfire", "stripper", "hippie" and "mouthwash".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Caryn:

Also popcorn and "freshly cut grass".
Avatar 4:13pm
glenn:

stripper scented candles? so basically, cheap perfume you can't wash off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
Caryn:

@glenn: exactly. They describe the scent as "the overpowering perfume strippers wear".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
Caryn:

I haven't checked, but I suspect the "hippie" one smells of patchouli. Or pot. Or both.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm

@common - could you give a top three to czech out? pardon the pun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm

There a lot of great Czech children's films - lots of fairy tales with a certain magical realism.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm

@hamburger: one is daisies. there is one i can't remember the name of but this guy was living in a comic book. valerie's week of wonders...that was Czech, I think. I'll get back to you.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm

Heh, read the Cinderella plot summary and read the "three magic nuts" as "3 magic nuns". Either way, that is a plot.
Avatar 5:08pm
glenn:

3 magic nuns. that was on redtube a while ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm

Caryn: It is a true classic for the young and young at heart, often seen at Christmas. No nuns, though!

hamburger --www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm

Caryn: Yes, that's often the problem. They often don't bother with subtitles since they figure that children can't follow them.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm
Caryn:

@davex: true that. Of course, the youtube version is ripped from tv, so it wouldn't have subtitles. But if anyone wants to try and follow along to the visuals, the film (1949 version of Sleeping Beauty) is here: www.youtube.com...

@Caryn: You're right, of course. I was just thinking of how hard it is to get children's DVDs with English subtitles here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
Caryn:

@davex: very true. Until recently, been quite hard to find any local movies with foreign subtitles on the DVDs. Been a real damper on introducing our cinema to foreign friends.
Avatar 5:42pm
glenn:

why is darwinism always so funny? news.nationalpost.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
davex:

Yes, and it is a general problem here in Germany that most English-language film and television are dubbed into German so that Germans do not hear as much English as other Europeans who use more subtitles. That may be why Scandinavians, etc. seem to speak much better English.
Avatar 5:45pm
