In 1999, I saw Rufus Thomas play a free show in Prospect Park. The stage was pretty far from the seating, and at one point Rufus started singing to (what looked to him like) an attractive long-haired gal in one of the front rows: "I looove you, baby, yes I do, you're so fine," etc. In fact -- as was obvious to everyone in the audience -- it was a long-haired guy. Can't remember if Rufus came to a sudden realization of his error...

Lore:

Thanks for this number, Matt. I've just been starting to become aware of the rewards found in Tampa Red's latter-era sides.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
Matt F:

Yeah Lore. I think his voice started to sound a little weirdly like Ray Charles with age...

That's me in the front bashing my head against the bass drum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
Uncle Michael:

Matt...that Tornadoes song reminds me of something...like an early Aaron Neville single or something...trying to place it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm
Matt F:

The voice is Nevilleish, the music reminds me of Castin' My Spell by the Johnny Otis show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
listener james from westwood:

i can get behind this sin city thing right here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm
Uncle Michael:

The Tornadoes reminds me of Earl King's Trick Bag.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm
Uncle Michael:

Powerage is the best AC/DC album and if you disagree, you're wrong.

Hi, Matt (waving "bye" to Joe)! If I've been listening all along -- and I have -- is it too late to chime in here how much I've been enjoying your show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm
Matt F:

Never too late. You can even do so tomorrow if you want, thanks to the magical KenzoDB AccuPlaylist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm

Matt, I just wanted to chime in and say how much I am already enjoying next week's show.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm

Diane Kamikaze and I have a weely custom when we run into each other in the record library where we tell each other how much we enjoyed next week's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
Uncle Michael:

Jesus, Matt...you don't let up.
  3:16pm
Andy S.:

Dock Boggs...wow. I remember that Revenant compilation (from '98) and the impact it had on me. Some of his recollections in the liner notes were downright chilling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
Matt F:

Yeah, a lot of that first batch of Revenant stuff really turned my head around...
Avatar 3:18pm
hyde:

if Uncle Michael's living one song behind and Doug is listening to next week's show, i think this playlist slipped into a wormhole
Avatar 3:18pm
kat330:

Jesus has little to do with this show today, from what I've heard.
Avatar 3:20pm
hyde:

@Andy S Dock Boggs is crazy good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Matt F:

But it's all gospel music really, when you get down to it.
Avatar 3:20pm
kat330:

Yes, of course, but also speaking of your early tracks. To wit, Mr. Hawkins. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
Matt F:

That song's about communion wafers, right?
Avatar 3:22pm
kat330:

That's the gospel truth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
listener james from westwood:

Avatar 3:24pm

I just went to my iTunes to see my track of this but instead landed on Simone's "Go to Hell." Isn't that Breckman's theme song?

Ha!
Avatar 3:29pm

Mr. Booker just put a spring in my step. It scared the cat.
Thanks, Matt.
Avatar 3:32pm

Maybe it was the spring in your step that scared the cat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm

I love Elephant's Gerald.
Avatar 3:39pm
kat330:

You can sure hear where Keith Richards got his sounds from in this. Early Stones exactly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Matt F:

Oh yeah. They were basically a Jimmy Reed/Chuck Berry cover band. A really good one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Uncle Michael:

I didn't even know the James Gang record was a cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
Matt F:

Which one UM? "Stop"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
Uncle Michael:

Yes.
  3:46pm
Andy S.:

"Minimalism has a certain charm. You say, that's a bit monotonous, but by the time it's finished, you're wishing it hadn't. There's nothing bad about monotony; everyone's got to live with it." -- Keith Richards on Jimmy Reed, from his autobiography LIFE.

crucial organ solo on this number
Avatar 3:46pm

Another great show! Also re: J Geils Band, before I spent a lot fo my my spare time hunting down the originals of Barrence Whitfield's covers, Chesterfield Kings's covers and the Zantees' covers, I learned a LOT from hunting down JGB covers (eg "Pack Fair & Square")
