I think I'll adopt Rhys Chatham as my new favorite guitar abuser.

P-90:

Hi Nick N! Phaedra was a favorite when I was a kid, haven't heard it in years. The Chatham is an inspired folow-up, the two make a real statement to start. Very welcome in the post-Spazz space...
  12:25am
mary:

Yeah, Drastic Classicism...have seen/heard it about 4 times including the first version with Karole Armitage choreographer/dancer with all dancers and band on stage, downtown circa 1980. gulp. Fantastic.
  12:27am
P-90:

Perhaps one of the more K. Crimson-esque Chatham offerings

Drastic at DTW, Dance Theater Workshop, now called NYLA on W 19th St. The demolished theater that was a black box with chairs on about 5 steps - a venue for 'experimental' dance. Not looking like the current theater. Sort of like the old Kitchen on Broome Street without windows and columns
Before Drastic they had done a duet in TR 3 on a very small stage where I got to hear Branca (Lee Renaldo, Wharton Tiers, Craig Kaftan,Ned Sublette and Glenn that show had a huge effect I remember the players whoa but I had the vinyl so...), Liquid Liquid, ESG, DNA, Dog Eat Dog, James Chance (99 Records hung there for a while). Happy semi teen years showing up for the shows, seeing the posters around and walking there.
  1:06am
P-90:

@ mary: thanks for the reply! Where NYLA is now, huh? Im trying to remember if I was ever there, Im betting I probably was, but no specific memories of the space you describe in that location. I saw Branca in that period too, hugely important, as you say.

Sham 69 "...there...I WAS there..."
fun transition from the comments. Snap!
Your show is so good. My first time and I will listen in future. Your sequencing is perfect, filled w surprises and so much fun.

P-90:

...I was very big on James Chance, Liquid Liquid, DNA, etc. in those heady days. Lots of new, new stuff everywhere, if you lived here in town it was all accessible and exciting, as you say. Always something to discover.

I wasn't aware of Shriekback until now but agree, I think of Nickleback as running with the same pack as limp bisket and Korn; I reckon that's a bit harsh though.
Avatar 2:39am
Droll:

Shriekback run with that XTC and Fripp pack, that can't be good news either.

I love faux-kalimba sounds! Bikutsi and Soukous are full of shredder guitars (because they have low action and 24 frets) with a piece of foam stuffed under the strings. Nobody fakes kalimba better than kalimba players!

NN, Great back-to-back contrasts all night. Thanks!
