I think that Richie Havens used to tune his guitar funny (I'm a non-musician) because he was used to singing in doo-wop groups and he wanted to copy that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Sat. 2/15/14 12:04pm Stevel:

Lydia Loveless cover is awesome.

Avatar Sat. 2/15/14 12:05pm glenn:

open tunings just have more melodic possibilities within the limits of four fingers, if that makes sense.
Avatar Sat. 2/15/14 12:05pm Michael Shelley:

barry Gibb is perhaps the best example of a person who made the most of open tunings - Jules Shear tunes
weird & Curtis mayfield tuned to the black keys of the piano
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Sat. 2/15/14 12:09pm Stevel:

Didn't Joni Mitchell use open tunings a lot? My wife struggled for years to figure out some of her songs. Open tuning made it a bunch easier.
Avatar Sat. 2/15/14 12:09pm glenn:

joni mitchell had some strange ones. and then there's the bruce palmer modal tuning E E E E B E.

that said; a chord is a chord is a chord. if you want to play a song, you should be able to play it with cowboy chords.
  Sat. 2/15/14 12:13pm geokopp:

I thought it was weird that the cheap trick show was so early tonight, 6:30. But I just looked and all the upcoming wellmont theater shows are at 6:30 or 7. Since when do shows start so early?
Avatar Sat. 2/15/14 12:14pm Michael Shelley:

It's a trick - doors are at 6:30, tehy want you to come drink there - but some shows are starting at 7:30 - I called the Wellmont this week and asked if there was an opening band - and they said they did not know yet!
Avatar Sat. 2/15/14 12:16pm glenn:

or it could be that their audience is all over 55 and wants to be in bed by 10:00. (he says somewhat seriously)
Avatar Sat. 2/15/14 12:16pm Frank Above:

Is it a "cheap trick" Michael? hahaha....oof.
Avatar Sat. 2/15/14 12:18pm Michael Shelley:

Glenn - I used to agree - but now I believe there are writers with a sensitivity to subtle chord variations that can build melodies to play off these sophisticated chords in a way that is very special

Avatar Sat. 2/15/14 12:29pm glenn:

i think that's maybe got more to do with the fact that as you become more technically proficient at your craft that you just naturally want to do more complex things. it's the same with any skill, really. i'm a highly skilled carpenter. i don't want to go back to back-filling additions. i want to build stuff that challenges me.

  Sat. 2/15/14 12:41pm bob:

my wife's old-time group has a guitar player that shows up occasionally and plays in some kind of tuning (DADGAD?) that drives them crazy, especially the bass player, because the chords are slightly off--they sound good by themselves but make accompaniasts wince.

god haven't heard Supergrass in a long while, Great damned band and under-appreciated fer sure. I have their best of somewhere on here....
Avatar Sat. 2/15/14 12:47pm Frank Above:

Supergrass is the best group to come out of the Brit Pop thing in the 90s. Head and shoulders as far as I'm concerned.
  Sat. 2/15/14 12:48pm LovecraftDude888:

thanks for the Buzzcocks tune by the way as well! Rocked! Got the juices flowin as it were

Could have sworn that was T. Rex.
  Sat. 2/15/14 12:49pm LovecraftDude888:

Frank...yeah I still haven't absorbed all their music, but Supergrass really were a good solid band, so under-exposed I think, to some degree. Are they still going?

Yes...I thought this Supergrass song was T. Rex for the 1st few seconds.

Bill Cunningham of the Box Tops was the brother of B.B. Cunningham, lead singer of the Hombres. BB played bass with Jerry Lee Lewis for years, and died last year. Their dad, Buddy Cunningham, recorded for Sun and was supposedly the first guy to play percussion on Elvis Presley session.
