Warning to all listeners: Don't be swayed by your DJ, the movie Nashville is horrible, you will waste your time and money on a few decent songs performed live along with a horrible plot, dozens of well-known actors performing like they are there just for the money, and well, it's not a believable story and it lasts too long. You have been warned.

Completely agree with glenn. I'm no Altman fan, though I'm lovin the tunes.
For balance, I just happen to be reading Wim Wenders's original essay/review about his love for 'Nashville'. At least as relevant as billbo bag-on's review! The only Altman films I liked so far were '3 Women' and 'The Player'. I'm determined to give him another shot this year.

What I love abt the songs from "Nashviile" is they are all delivered with the same conviction and sincerity regardless of the quality of the artist/song. Henry Gibson thinks he's every bit as good as Barbara Jean. His obliviousness is disarming.

I agree that all artists should get a cut from subscription/satellite radio -- any radio that a citizen chooses to pay for.

I strongly disagree that any AM/FM terrestrial – FCC-monitored -- should have to pay. Why not just put a fee on any radio that is bought in the US? Why not have every citizen pay a fee every time they turn on the radio?

Get ready for FM/AM radio to be filled with talk or custom material. Why not just have WFMU broadcast the free music archive all the time?

Yes, it’s quite sad that radio airplay doesn’t transfer to records sales anymore… if radio sales transferred into a “Frampton Comes Alive,” there wouldn’t be an argument for this… It’d just that those days are over and artists are looking for other areas for income, but I feel it’s the wrong direction.

And this is coming from a drummer who gets paid royalties.

writing is no better...I've done some pro. work the past several years contributing essays and things....major publishers or good-size academic presses...you get negligible royalties for that, no cut of the profits, and only whilst book is in print. After that..nothing. And it's almost nothing anyway.

@Mike Sin: “Why not have every citizen pay a fee every time they turn on the radio?” Because radio is now a dying medium that has it’s use but cannot ever imagine the scale of use it once had.
  12:57pm
LovecraftDude888:

Jake..and yeah we're most of us paying enough for cable/internet access at home and mobile. Although not everybody..given there's free as well. So weird.

Radios not free! Marathon starts tomorrow!
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2024 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
Mike Sin:

@Jake -- that's my point, and I was being a little facetious. Do you really think the AM/FM stations would just pony up new “fees” for music if it’s a dying medium? It would just behoove them to broadcast custom content if prerecorded music is just diminishing returns as we move into the future.

In addition, if the AM/FM stations have to pay these higher fees, they’ll just stick with music offering the most bang for their buck – and that’ll probably just be even tighter, smaller playlists.
  3:38pm
Dano59:

OK, as someone who got back on the radio last year, the dilemma in the modern age is that most people in the community don't own radios - or they can only listen in the car. Our community station has a web stream that supports a whopping 50 listeners.
And I think artists should be paid, ideally by some policy-backed structure that siphons profits from the technocrats who are sucking up people's income via cable and internet ...
we're all serfs in the digital age ... same as it ever was.

The NPR worst songs thing is stupid. Is it ok to have a conversation about how awful Carrie Brownstein is?
