Evening, ndbob! And evening, Jessie! (The dog was cowering. Now she is lying down right beside my chair.)

Howdy, Doug and all! I will need this show. Productive day sidetracked by administrivia. Late phonecalls causing hunger rage. Defaulting to cereal and sulking.

Our next selection is mega-perplexin'. I explain later.
  7:15pm Holly in NC:

Hello Doug & all other friends!

Will listen on archive, need to save battery power. Duke Energy's recent wildly over-aggressive "pruning" of our neighborhood trees did absolutely no good today, multiple trees & ergo power lines down. So the a-holes wrecked innumerable gorgeous trees for NAUGHT.

Welcome aboard, nobunny walks in L.A. Grab an oar and start rowing!

Someone quick, order this, read it and tell me the best parts: books.google.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:17pm listener james from westwood:

Sad to hear that, Holly. The utilities in this area largely take a ready, fire, aim approach to balancing aesthetics and the needs of the grid, even in this town, ostensibly a "tree city."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Doug Schulkind:

Just awful, Holly. Criminal even.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm northguineahills:

*Waves* Enjoy the archive, Holly. Duke Energy is getting more cartoonishly (and depressingly) evil.

I got that wrong. It should have been "I lost my wife too, but her name wasn't Idey and it wasn't in no flood."

Is that a young George Orwell on the extreme right? (Not usually an extreme where you find Orwell, admittedly.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Jessie wins the kewpie doll!

Listener James, I see what you see, but I highly doubt it's Orwell. I forget where this photo was taken. Mandela is with fellow political radicals strategizing the next, militant, stage of the revolution. They are in Morocco or maybe Algeria?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Doug Schulkind:

My poor daughter is sitting at PNC Park waiting for the rain-delayed Pirates game to start.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:51pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, agreed. Just had a vague resemblance. IIRC Orwell did live in Morocco for a while, but if their paths had crossed, it's likely we'd have found out. I think GO just wrote and gardened during his stay.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Uncle Michael:

The Cubs game is rain delayed?

PNC looks like a really pretty ballpark. I want to go there.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Doug Schulkind:

That was indeed a cover of the Eddie Cochran tune. See here: soulsafari.wordpress.com...

Pull quote: The best known track is the lovely ‘Three Steps To Heaven’, a cover of an original song by Eddie Cochran, the signature sound of the late 1950s. This brilliant gem is one of the best love songs of the 20th century and presented here in a good-humoured reggea-vibe.

1971 is shaping up to have been a good year for So. Af. music based on this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Doug Schulkind:

The horn section on this track sounds SO Ellington to me.

Squandering precious battery time to share my love of your pseudonym.

And sharing guilty pleasure video for many, many reasons, not least because EVERYONE'S nipples (or potential nipples) are fuzzed out, including drunk male audience members & band members alike. Dale herself is showing no nip but gets fuzzed anyway.

Greetings! I am filling in for Gary now! (Thanks to Gary who filled in for me last Friday.) Gary will be back next Wednesday.

@Uncle Michael
The Pirates game is, too!

@hyde: haha Give the Bodega a Drummer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Doug Schulkind:

hyde-y ho!

@doca
Last Friday I went to my daughter's middle graduation and Gary was kind enough to sub for me. I gave him an A+.
Avatar 8:49pm doca:

Haha cool. Congrats to your daughter. Middle graduation means she's now moving to college?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Doug Schulkind:

This Miriam Makeba record is a live performance in Ivory Coast.

@doca
Nope. She is headed to what we call high school. Grades 9-12. She would go directly to college if they'd let her.
Avatar 8:56pm doca:

Oh yes, it is that grades 9-12 are called "middle school" (ensino médio) here in Brazil. But nice to see she could go directly to college, she's smart!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Earlier in the show, we had apple pickin'. Now we have chicken pickin'.

@doca
Will you derive any pleasure from the presence of the World Cub in Brazil, or is FIFA just too evil? Or a combination?
Avatar 9:02pm doca:

@Doug: it's all too complicated, but now that the World Cup is here, I guess I'll just try to sit back and watch as many games as I can (I will even got to see Algeria x South Corea myself!). I don't know, Brazil has a lot of problems and FIFa is just pure evil, but people are losing control of their criticisms and verging on something even more evil than FIFA and Dilma's administration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Doug Schulkind:

I hear you, doca.
Avatar 9:04pm doca:

@Doug: something more evil as in people from the political left unintentionally opening a political gap in which some really right-wing/minimal state/free market forces can win the October elections or even creating a space in which something can overthrow the democratic system...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm northguineahills:

I have a friend who is flying into La Paz, Bolivia, and then taking a train to Salvador to watch four games. All of them were not high demand games, so he got the tickets cheap. His plane ticket to Bolivia is relatively dirt cheap. Wish I had money and was not working, I would have done such.
Avatar 9:08pm hyde:

@doca I know there's all sorts of problems with all the extracurriculars and etc too, but I confess I really, really just love the World Cup and I just can't help it. i'm pretty excited.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Very fair to say Ornettish, nobunny.
Avatar 9:10pm doca:

@hyde: yeah I think Brazil really thought could handle it in some easy way, but everybody knew that the Cup would be kind of a scam, like the 2007 Pan American games. But I also love the World Cup, can't say it isn't a dream coming true to have it at home.
Avatar 9:11pm doca:

@ngh: I didn't know there was a train from La Paz to Salvador! That's some country he'll see!
  9:12pm mike east:

@ngh - I've got family in Bolivia. I hope to go someday...and that tix r cheap. I saw the guardian is showing games at terminal 5 tomorrow and Friday...possibly on the roof...free
Dug that last set, Doug. And this here
Avatar 9:13pm doca:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi mike east!
Avatar 9:14pm hyde:

@doca South Korea/Algeria is a good game to go to, too. That group is kind of wide open.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Just wait until you hear the story behind this subversive record. Just wait!
  9:16pm mike east:

Oh and btw jeff m solved my stream query yesterday...was able to catch some nazario at work today
Avatar 9:16pm doca:

@hyde: I'm very excited for it, I'm pretty sure I will never see both of those teams on a stadium again eheh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Doug Schulkind:

The final artist in this set is named Teaspoon. I just thought you should know in advance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm northguineahills:

@ Mike: I used to work near Terminal 5, consarnit. Will watch tomorrow in my hood.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Doug Schulkind:

"Catch some nazario" sounds like a euphemism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James from Westwood
Then you would adore Salad Fork Wilkins. At least the early stuff. Before he sold out.
Avatar 9:25pm doca:

@ngh: yes...I think that FIFA really screwed themselves trying to grab as much money as they could in so little time, they'll have even more public image issues in the coming years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm northguineahills:

Yeah, at least Russia makes sense, as they have a decent team and league, and a tradition of competing plus the ability to put up the infrastructure w/o using slave labor (sorry, run-on sentence). That said, there were most likely many palms greased. Now Qatar, WTF were they thinking. Outside of a lack of ever competing in a WC, and the climate, it's the size of Connecticut!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm northguineahills:

Thanks for a kickass evening Doug! See you Friday!

Have a good evening, friends!
Avatar 9:31pm doca:

@ngh: After you said it all, see ya!
Avatar 9:32pm doca:

I'm gonna read a little bit too, see you all later! Bye, Doug, great to hear you again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Doug Schulkind:

Cheers to you, NGH and doca!

totally off topic, I recommend the new postings at Pakistani Lollywood (a little lo-fi, but y'know) hindustanivinyl.blogspot.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Doug Schulkind:

I assure you, the chipmunk chirping in the background of this record is doing so at the correct speed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Doug Schulkind:

I did a thorough scouring of that blog a while ago, hyde. Time to dive back in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Doug Schulkind:

This show is going to go about 5 minutes over. So you all have to wait a little longer before dashing to the kitchen for that grilled cheese sammich.
Avatar 9:57pm hyde:

@Doug it's been slow there for awhile, these are the first new things in months! it's good stuff though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
I have to admit, I stopped going there because the sound quality was not good enough for the radio. Also, a bunch of what they were posting has appeared elsewhere. But I love just going there and looking at the pretty pictures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey, could someone make me a grilled cheese sammich? I'm famished.
Avatar 10:04pm hyde:

yeah, I agree. the stuff is generally pretty crusty, which is too bad. (the new ones are not radio ready either, unfortunately). i can also recommend the onslaught of LA Free Music Society stuff at Die or DIY or the early Eddie Clearwater at Blue Eye though! (I'm sure you know this already, you scourer you)

Thanks for the fill-in!
  10:04pm listener james from westwood:

Many thanks, Doug, for the mighty show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Thank you hyde and James and everyperson! I really love playing records and hanging out with you.
