Yes, we're back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:19am fleep:

Been standing for 18 minutes. Was waiting for the Hendrix. Hope we can sit down soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:19am pacific standard simon:

I'm crediting Station Manager Ken for this awesome montage, but if you have other intel, please advise.
  Fri. 7/4/14 12:20am Cooh John:

God bless'Merica
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:24am Fuzzy:

Yer nailin' it tonight, Nick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:24am pacific standard simon:

What can I say? I DO love my country -- so much that I refuse to give credit to the schmucks who run it now for what it once was, and could be again.
  Fri. 7/4/14 12:24am Nick Name:

yes back!!! hi jeff / Fleep / PSS / cj / Fuzzy
Fri. 7/4/14 12:26am Pete L in Columbus Ohio:

pretty funny too
  Fri. 7/4/14 12:26am Nick Name:

all me Pacific….they gave the british guy the 4th !? there asking me to do bad
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:26am pacific standard simon:

OK, maybe it never has been what it once was, but we're working on it!
  Fri. 7/4/14 12:30am i k e:

Love the show, but that CCR is so overplayed by evil commercial radio that there are "Fortunate Son"-shaped burn marks in the underlying auditory fabric of the space-time continuum (check your TARDIS, it'll show ya). When it started, I was hoping it would be a distorted Basinski-style disintegrating 8-track version or something. Digging Officer! though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:30am pacific standard simon:

Play the "Yankee Doodle" song, then, Nick -- it was always was a sarcastic number.
  Fri. 7/4/14 12:35am Nick Name:

ike - i like Fogherty , see where you are coming from though, commercial radio spoils a lot of good artists but won't stop me playing them -
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:37am pacific standard simon:

"Fortunate Son" is still a high water mark of righteousness. If you want a real fightin' and cussin' rant, though, try the (German/Canadian) Steppenwolf "America" trilogy.
  Fri. 7/4/14 12:39am P-90:

Happy American Independence Day, DJ Nick! Great set so far, an actual Yank couldn't have done it better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:40am pacific standard simon:

What p-90 sez.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:41am Fuzzy:

PSS: good call with the Steppenwolf!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:42am Fuzzy:

Keep On Rockin' In The Freeform World, everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:45am pacific standard simon:

Sometimes I feel like the only way to love the country where you were born is to beat it like a mule into the place where it wanted to be in the first place.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 12:46am coelacanth:

the Steppenwolf i grew up with;the one that did a song called "monster" which included a section called "america" was from the usa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:47am Ken From Hyde Park:

Just checked the weather forecast for tomorrow. Looks like no rain after mid-morning. I hope that bad old puddy-tat hurricane stays well off the coast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:47am pacific standard simon:

But I have a creepy, ugly feeling that Hitler probably understood politics that way, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 12:50am pacific standard simon:

@coelacanth - John Kay was a German immigrant; Steppenwolf was a Canadian band called Sparrow.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 12:50am coelacanth:

yes. hitler,bush,reagan,stalin,mussolini...
  Fri. 7/4/14 12:51am Cooh John:

Hi Pete L, in C-bus as well, with 'FMU.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 12:53am coelacanth:

yes i vaguely remember reading that about Kay. And i dont know about the sparrows; but Steppenwolf formed in the us.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 12:54am coelacanth:

  Fri. 7/4/14 12:55am P-90:

@ pss/coel: Yes, Steppenwolf's a Canadian band, technically. But a great band, so really, what's the dif?
  Fri. 7/4/14 12:56am nate:

nick, finally got your marathon cd in the mail this week, good stuff
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 12:56am Droll:

Kudos to P-90 for being the first (and only) commenter to refer to the holiday by it's name. Remember it's a holiday celebrating overthrowing bad and ineffective government?
...And that's why NN has to work -- his side lost.
  Fri. 7/4/14 12:58am Cooh John:

@Pete L-Heard a good amount of Columbus bands on WFMU. I think Saintseneca would sound good as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:00am pacific standard simon:

"The essential core of Steppenwolf was the trio of John Kay, Jerry Edmonton, his brother Dennis Edmonton and Goldy McJohn from The Sparrows, originally Jack London & the Sparrows from Oshawa, Ontario,Canada." -- from Wikipedia

This is, essentially, the way I remember it. The difference is that it's always good to notice the sources of your critics, even when you agree with them.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:00am coelacanth:

...after all these years!
...So,it was formed, for the most part as Steppenwolf was, before they moved to the us? .'always heard they were a "west coast" band. 'never looked into it.
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:05am Nick Name:

hi pete L / P-90 / droll , ha ha …. / Ken from…coelacanth
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:05am coelacanth:

okay, pacific s.s. ...Steppenwolf was one of my favorite bands -musically,AND spiritually, when i was growing up.
It'd bewildering that i never found out more about them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:05am pacific standard simon:

Congotronics kicks ass!
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:05am P-90:

@coel: Sure, in a sense they are an "American" , "West Coast", "Hollywood" band because their management, record company etc. were part of that establishment. Whether a band like that is really "American" or "Canadian" is a matter of how you're looking at it.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:13am coelacanth:

P-90 -i appreciate that! But it does sound like i should call them "canadian",if i have to call them anything!
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:14am marmalade kitty:

north american?
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:15am Droll:

Doesn't the Canuck Government have a definition for Canadian Content? I'd consider that the final word.
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:15am marmalade kitty:

whats all the fuss?
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:18am marmalade kitty:

do you see magpies in north america?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:18am pacific standard simon:

I would call them one of the earliest international rock groups (not to be confused with international POP groups). But maybe that;s just hair splitting.
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:20am marmalade kitty:

ah, the black billed magpie
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:22am marmalade kitty:

a lot of Americans with ants in their pants today! :)
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:23am P-90:

My final ruling: for July 4th celebration purposes, they are an American band, suitable for play during even the finest fireworks displays. The band members were immigrants, and this is a nation of immigrants.
NOW: On to the next subject...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:23am Santos L Halper:

@mk: and we need to dance!
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:25am P-90:

Hi @ MK and SLP! and: Yeah!
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:29am coelacanth:

Wow! i stepped away for a minute & there's all these new developments!
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:30am marmalade kitty:

orlop killing it
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:31am pacific standard simon:

@P-90 - Nope, your can of worms this time -- Steppenwolf = no good for 4th celebrations; CCR = OK for 4th celebrations.
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:34am marmalade kitty:

Bruce Springsteen born in the usa? Hendrix star spangled banner?
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:35am P-90:

"Born to be Wild": 100% fireworks-ready, has undoubtedly been used that way countless times
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:35am marmalade kitty:

obvious, no?
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:36am Droll:

. o O ( Sigh... why does everyone hate "Independence Day"? )

If I'm the last 'murican who's happy America had revolutionary forefathers and there's a holiday to celebrate deposing bad government, so be it.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:37am coelacanth:

well if i go to the pub tonight (meaning after i sleep for the night then awake again),i'm playing on the jukebox Steppenwolf,CCR,dead kennedys, zero boys,Johnny Cash...(actually it depends a bit on who's there. i'm a considerate jukebox feeder.)
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:38am Droll:

Take a lesson from these Chinese chaps in Carsick Cars, they have a song called "Everybody Comes To The City Now, Everybody Wants To Be Free But They Don't Know…"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:40am Ken From Hyde Park:

@Droll - The part where they planted the computer virus in the mother ship was pretty far-fetched. Actually, most of that movie was not believable. The CGI effects didn't look too fake.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:41am coelacanth:

m.kitty NN played Jimi early on.
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:42am marmalade kitty:

any bootleg fireworks? careful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:42am Fuzzy:

@Ken: Yeah, the aliens were running Windows 98, right?
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:45am P-90:

The Goldblum guy figured out the alien's entire system, found a hole in their security, designed a virus that would disrupt EVERYthing, in like what, 6 hours?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:49am pacific standard simon:

Whut, I step away from the computer, Nick's playing British art rock, and I don't know WHAT you're talking about...
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:50am Droll:

P-90, Most feature films are only 90 minutes. Goldblum's really slow and the director is very indulgent.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:50am Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Real Genius has a good computer-virus-on-plane scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:51am pacific standard simon:

All I was trying to do was clean the BBQ pan for tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:51am Ken From Hyde Park:

PSS - We've been ripping on a movie - www.imdb.com...
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:53am Claw!:

First-time commenter on your show tonight, Nick - I gotta say that you've been knocking it outta the park. Very nicely done, Sir! You always keep it interesting. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:54am Fuzzy:

"The aliens are coming and their goal is to invade and destroy. Fighting superior technology, Man's best weapon is Back Orifice."
  Fri. 7/4/14 1:56am P-90:

@Kenzo: Happy Independence Day to you, Sir! You're our favorite computer "virus". Got any fill-ins coming up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:56am Fuzzy:

And that movie came out in '96 -- time flies! So the aliens were using Windows 95 then -- my bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:57am pacific standard simon:

The only Independence Day I recognize is Dave Alvin's "4th Of July".

Anyone who can't understand that, well... whatever.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 1:58am Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@P-90: Going on tour in September; was thinking I ought to warm up with a fill in. You find me one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 1:59am Ken From Hyde Park:

@Kenzo - Zats, sorry if my comment with the word "virus" caused your pager to go off. Hope it didn't wake you.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 2:02am Droll:

Kenzo on tour? Will there be the black t-shirts with the white jersey sleeves at the merch table? I love when they print all the tour dates on the back with the "SOLD OUT" stamp across them.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 2:03am Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 2:04am Droll:

Kenzo still rocks a pager? You're my main Luddite, bro.

@droll: But it's a 3-way pager.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 2:14am pacific standard simon:

It's probably the warehouse, Ken.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 2:18am Droll:

pss probably got a 7SD premium. I think they're almost ready to ship 2008's premium.

  Fri. 7/4/14 2:28am Nick Name:

hey Kenzo
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 2:29am coelacanth:

i picked Ken's workout video a few years back. i eventually was informed by Joe M. to either keep waiting,buuut...;or get a different premium. I don't think it was ever produced.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/4/14 2:30am pacific standard simon:

Droll, you gonna go see the fake Groucho Marx (Frank Ferrante) at ACT this August? Totally worth it!

Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 2:48am Droll:
